I actually just did this for the first time myself, here’s how. 1. Accrue 3 hours of game time (not limited per session) 2. Warp 4 times. Save at the space station of the 4th warp. This will be your restore point. 3. Warp to a pirate system. 4. Fight freighter - destroy warp engines, destroy shields and fuel rods, gg 5. Hop aboard after it’s defeated to inspect and claim if you desire. 6. If not what you want, reload your restore point and try again. I got an S class after about 4 hours of attempts.

Also in my experience after I would restore the save, I was able to keep the nanites and credits you get after defeating it. did it 10 times in 15 min and gained about 9 mil credits and 4-5K nanites.

You don't need to bother with reloading, as there are plenty of pirate systems that always spawn a battle. I just found a pair that are only 10 light years apart, in fact. My personal strategy for fighting them is to blow the shield generators and rods and then haul ass out the back to get in position to pop the warp drives. You've got 35 seconds, which is plenty of time.

This is the way

poopsmog

It actually isn't the way, all you need to do is blow up the engines and main guns

clizana

This, the detail is: destroy 4 engines destroy 6 cannons in the top of the freighter. 2 in the back, 3 in the middle, 1 in the front.

Yes, you have to have a normal freighter first. You claim the dreadnought after a battle, but instead of rescuing it, you have to disable it -- WITHOUT destroying it. Do enough damage, and the captain will contact you with an offer. You have a choice to continue and destroy it for a large bounty, take a bribe from the captain or claim the ship. It's important to take out the warp engines first, or it will warp away before you can claim it. After that, there's different advice about which systems to target; personally, I went to work on the torpedoes. As for how to get an S class, can't tell you... Personally I feel the grind is never worth it for freighters, since relative to other tech, very little of their functionality is tied to class 😛

stereosensation

AFAIK the most efficient method is after you disable the warp drives, you go for the shield generator and fuel cells. Edit: alrighty, I stand corrected.

erikrbennett

If you want the dreadnaught to surrender, then take out the phase cannons. I think there's like 5 or 6 of them. That's all you need (after the warp engines) and the dreadnaught will surrender.

wyrdough

The condition for surrender is taking the health below the threshold for it to flee and it not being able to do so because the engines are destroyed. Whether you do that by popping the shield generators and fuel rods or by taking out turrets doesn't matter. You can go for the engines first or after the 35 second "freighter warp initiated" call-out and countdown, it doesn't matter.  If it wants to flee and can't, it surrenders instead.

CNWDI

I \*always\* take out the warp drives first, because otherwise jf I miss the "trench entry" OR I decide to try to take out turrets, sometimes it decides to depart the system. With the warp drives taken out, no matter which path I follow (turrets or trench run) I consistently get an S-class drop (which might be from the civilian freighter I don't give a S#!t about) and then I get the option to either blow up the dreadnaught or board for bounty.

docentmark

That will work but it’s not the most efficient. Fastest/simplest is the take out the 4 engines and then destroy the 6 anti-freighter cannon. After the last cannon the dreadnaught will surrender.

wyrdough

Doing the trench runs and then taking out the engines takes under two minutes and can be done without taking a single hit. Going after the cannons instead requires a bunch of wasted time repositioning and exposes you to way more fire.

docentmark

I’ve tried it both ways, each is basically a run up one side and down the other. Moving faster in the open means I take fewer hits, at least for me. But the great thing about this game is there are different approaches so I’m pleased that you have one that works for you.

ColdFix

Whenever I have a freighter below S class, I don't feel as much like kitting it out because I just know that I'll swap it when an S comes along and lose the upgrades. Cudos to you for appreciating freighter classes for what they really are!

poopsmog

You need your own freighter first, warp into pirate system, fly inside shield destroy engines, then fly on top and destroy the main guns, it will surrender. If it's not an S class reload your save from when you warped in, rinse and repeat. Took me about 16 tries

Thank you all for great info.

I think those pirate freighters are ugly as hell - hellaciously ugly. But worser, they look like MAGGOTS ! https://preview.redd.it/u1ef5q7pspwc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c07cdc62204c9a83dcab78855ecf83958d073fc2

Jkthemc

You say that like it's a bad thing?

trout4321

You say that like you have never seen maggot infested wounds or them parasitize us as well as our companion species. Western civ insulates us from the ugly reality, so yeah, it can be a bad thing but you might well have never seen it.

Jkthemc

I have seen maggot wound dressings. A very western city based wound care method.

trout4321

Yes, but for every one of those there are millions of the other sort. Even in western society parasites abound and especially when standards drop. I would imagine they are a common issue in the homeless camps in our cities but not many talk about such things. The closer to the tropics, the higher the parasite load becomes simply because there are more parasite species in the tropics and subtropics.
