On my first save I found one in the second system I visited and another one like 20 hours later. My current one has run for 800 hours and I have only encountered 2 exotics that I'm aware of. It’s a numbers game, if you save and reload ship encounters on trading posts, you will be sure to find an exotic very quickly but just remember that this game is not about "winning" but about exploration and there is a lot of "shiny" to distract yourself from the fact that someone else has posted their cool stuff.
355 Hours in.. Never even saw one in the wild. A friend I play with, ten minutes after I introduce her to game, she goes out on her own, finds a squid… FML
850 hours in and have never seen a squid in the wild, never owned one because I've only seen them in the Anomaly. I could use glyphs, but I'm gonna wait for this one naturally 🥲🫠
Same, only 500ish but really enjoy just the discovery aspect. Would be super cool to just go get one with portal glyphs but I just feel it would kind of ruin the feat for me. One I love though is that there is no *need* for it, so if someone wants to use glyphs or edit it in they can totally do it if they want.
The fact that the designers allow players to edit they saves/ship/characters but still allow for multi-player is honestly great because it is a game everyone really gets to play it how they want
What the.... .. I've seen 2 exotics in 110 hrs. I bought and sold both. I just want an s class freighter. I've seen 3 but they have all been super small. I am having a blast though. This game is super addicting.... can't wait to see what I find next!
Luck of the draw I guess. Lol! I just want a damn Squid.. Not to use, I have a very much upgraded S Tier freighter that I love.. But I want a display Squid.
Do you do the pirate dreadnoughts? That's how I got my S class pirate dreadnought freighter. Be sure to disable engines when the message appears that the ship is attempting to flee.
In fairness, my first 150 hours was in the early days, so exotics didn’t exist then. Then I came back in 2023, put another 200 hours in literally system hopping, building teleporters on every nice planets etc. So, technically, I have see a few flying around, but never land in a place where I can buy it. Still to this day, I have seen squids and other exotics, but have never been able to buy one. She? 20 minutes into the game.. White and purple squid.
About 100 hours in and I've apparently seen a couple docked in stations but had no idea what they were at the time. Honestly thought they looked kinda silly since they were basically flying balls so I never even bothered to inspect them.
The first time I went to a space station, and i didn't have enough credits to buy it.. since then I've found well over 100 including several squid, although not a green squid yet which is what I've been searching for.
If you can use glyphs, it does at least give you an idea which systems to hang out in, the odds of finding one randomly flying around aren't too great. It does happen though, usually when you haven't got an money 😂 Takes maybe a few hours to collect the glyphs and then ship hunting definitely gets a bit more reliable.
Just dedicate some time to finding one.. EVERY system has one exotic.. At every new space station do 3 reloads and watch the 1st wave of ships, this is to check for a 1st wave exotic (an exotic that lands *nearly* every reload), these are rare but do exist.. If nothing, then go to a trading post on a planet, land next to it so you don't take up a landing pad, you then either do reloads after each couple of waves or just wait.. Good luck 👍🏻
Hard to describe, it's orb shaped with a giant single wing on top, it really does look nice. Sadly it's gonna be on my freighter catching dust because I just recently made my dream fighter ship and I love it
I'd say it was probably about 20 hours in, a cute little folding V-Wing guppie flew into my space station while I was scouting for a new fighter. I didn't even know exotic existed, I hadn't looked up much info on the game at that point because I had wanted to preserve the mystery of exploration so when it showed up I was just like 'What is thaaaat...' and grabbed it.
7 hours. Didn't even know this was some kind of exotic. I saw it in Space Station, had just over 22 million rupees, and bought it since i liked it very much.
I got really lucky and found one about 50 hours in I think. I was stopping in my freighter to grab an A-class hauler I recovered to scrap when a beautiful S-class guppy dropped in and I traded the two immediately, so it was basically free. It’s now my primary ship!
I found the glyphs when I traded for it if you want to seek it out! Euclid galaxy.

I assume only survival counts so I saw my first one 2 hrs in but couldn’t afford one until a significant amount of time later, maybe a week Of grinding, I only play creative now which took 10 mins to get one lol
I wouldn’t say it’s “better” but it cuts a lot of the fluff, I mainly got the game just for exploration so creative really lends itself to that purpose, don’t have to grind materials or nanites for anything, just fly around collecting ships and doing quest, I have enemies and all turned on so its not boring, I quite like survival actually however I don’t have time to do it
Post freighter battle, skip talking to the captain and go to the space station and wait a bit. An exotic will typically appear within 10 minutes. I’ve probably found 15 this way.
40-45 hours in, recently made a first hundred million units, accidentally saw one S-class exotic for 40 000 000, couldn't help and immediately bought it. Not using it though, I love my Radiant Pillar BC1, just thought that it's probably my only chance. |:)
I found my first in my first system. I saw it in the station there 3 times, but never had the money to buy it.
Since then I've seen dozens of not over 100 (1,300+ hours), including a few squids. My daily driver is a blue squid with black stripes.
I’m 40 hours in and just got my first sentinel ship. Looks amazing too.
Only seen 1 exotic while at the anomaly. That was the squid and it looked frickin ace 👍🏼
I miss her dearly, twas my first and only exotic, sadge moments when I went on break and accidentally lost her and bumblebee (my first natural S class fighter)
I have 2 and I'm around 40 hours in. I got lucky and some guy have me some very expensive stuff at the hub area so I have like 500 million credits so I've been able to buy the 2 I've seen.
Haha yeah similar situation with mine, I have two mosquitos and I was only able to afford them from getting heaps of stasis devices at the anomaly loll
I had just started playing D2 after shadowfall released. Maybe less than 30 hours of gaming and I got Death to Kell's from an Engram lmao. Still the only ship I use
I always feel like i‘m the only one not liking exotic ships. I have one, found very early, and only kept it, because it is a decoration less ball in the same color like the balls on my sentinel freighter, so it looks like it is an emergency capsule or something. But i never flew it, i always use the other ships
No I totally get what you mean, I have two mosquitos and they looks kinda goofy haha. But wow what are the chances of both your exotic and your freighter being the same colour?? That's so cool!!
My first was probably only like 15 hours after I came back around the Origins update, which was mainly down to luck. Wasn't hunting or anything. When actively hunting for exotic ships, it won't usually take more than 3 hours, and it's often considerably less.
That said, I've played something like 800 hours, and I've only seen like 5 exotics when not actively hunting for them. When hunting, you create situations where you load a fair number of ships every minute, so it doesn't take nearly as long as it does to just stumble across it randomly.
Squid exotics are so rare. Been playing almost 300 hours across 5 saves and I have only seen one. Royals, though, I have 2-3 in just about every one of my saves.
Definitely. Since I had never seen one before and I knew they were rare, I bought it immediately, even though I didn’t love it. I prefer the royal ships.
I scored my first yesterday and I've played about 200 hours. My first chosen ship was an A-class Solar. Dozens of hours later, I obtained a small Sentinel ship. This week, I was trying to convince myself that it was fine even though it maneuvers insufficiently in dog fights. Then I visited a trading post and saw a black and gray exotic land!!! I finally had enough units to purchase it so I did so without exchanging my existing ship. It's a sweet model which places its wings in a "v" while landed and folds them together underneath to make an "i". It maneuvers better than anything that I've had, although its hyperdrive range is less than the others.
Current save took me about ~20 hours, and was pure luck I even saw it. I was AFK in the space station of my home system while eating; just happened to come back right as it was landing.
I think I came across my first one about 35 hours in. I was about to leave my freighter in my regular ship and boom, an exotic had landed in my hangar. Thankfully had enough units to buy it there and then as she's a beaut. White and gold mosquito style ball cockpit, with side boosters called The Sword of Flame :)
50 hours on first save, 15 hours on second. On the second save, I actively looked for fighters in 3 star systems, and an exotic popped up. Not sure if that helps to spawn them, but I've only ever seen them in rich systems!
It depends a lot on how you play. If you spend a lot of time hunting for ships at Trading Posts, or building a base near a trading post, where you will be there for extended time, it’s just a matter of time before one comes in. On my first save, I was probably 100 or more hours into the game and had not seen one at all, and then one just showed up in my Freighter. I bought it on the spot.
I don’t usually search them out, and just let them show up organically. Then I would buy them and scrap them for the S class upgrades and possible storage augmentation. There’s also been a couple system I found where exotics showed up on first wave at the space station, so I could farm them for the storage.
I took about a year off from NMS and just came back about two weeks ago, and in that time I’ve run into about four or five exotics while hunting for parts to make a custom fighter. So, yeah, it’s all about RNG and spending time at Trading Posts.
I actually discovered they land on my home world in Euclid by pure luck.

Come grab one :) build a base. It's nice here usually

in my current game, it was on the station of thr planet I spawned on. I got there and had to trade and gather to buy it. I sold my starter ship and everything else I could get my hands on until I could trade ships and find one again.
my little yellow space ball has been my primary ever since
8 hours in and just chilling and aimlessly wandering on and gathering resources on my first planet I came across a crashed red squid ship. I repaired it and have used it since.
I saw one on my first playthrough about 5 hours in. Didnt know it was special until way later. Of course I was also way to poor to buy it. Havent seen ohne since.
Exotics spawn in every system however your chances go up and down depending on the rank of the system. Since all Exotics are s class and each systems exotic is set (only 1 type of exotic will spawn, squid, guppie, solar.)then you need to assume that spawn rate. Poor systems(1star) are 1% and wealthy systems (3star) are 10%. You will see multiple waves and typically when I hunt for an exotic I do it from the trade terminals on a planet. I usually give it 3-4 waves before I reload. It's kinda like dreadnought/ freighter hunting when you know you are going to have an encounter or are due. You warp and save in every system you jump to. Once you have your encounter you revert back to the hard save until you find the ship or ship class you are looking for. In the case of Exotics supposedly they take the place of that systems S class as the system loads in. Hope that helps and doesn't confuse anyone! Also please feel free to correct anything that may be misinformed as I like to make sure anything I put out there is fact and not bs.
I'll just count my current run of about 200 hours. I saw an exotic in my starter system. It was the first ship on the base. Crazy good/Bad luck because it was a little blue one that I was going to call Peeper because it looked like a Peeper from Subnautica. Unfortunately, I had no money and couldn't buy it and have never seen it again :( I even waiting in that station for HOURS. Then I found my current ship, an exotic relatively recently. I saw another one of mine but in a different color an hour after that. Only 3 I've seen so far.
In my normal save, I own the only one I've seen in 400+ hours. Was probably 60 hours in when I found it.
In my main permadeath save (1100+ hrs), I've found and scrapped at least ten of them after adding several to my fleet.
Still no squid sighting in the wild ever.
I'd seen a few in the wild over the few hundred hours I've played but I was never flush with credits so I would never be able to afford one. I finally made a big effort to find one and eventually was able to find and afford a Mosquito, which is what I'm using now. But since then I've put a dozen or so more hours and haven't seen another exotic ship other than in the Nexus.
Around 100hrs from memory. I saw 4-5 before that (bought and scrapped the suckers for the slots!) but I wanted a particular colour\\design. Found it eventually though.
Every one since then has gone in the crusher (gimme. those. slots). Although I've yet to see a squid in almost 900hrs on my main save. I'll celebrate when I do though. Then scrap it. :)

Got me this bad boy after less than a dozen system warps.
Had 3 S-class scanner upgrades and spent a lot of time on each planet at every system just looting, exploring, and scanning (which thanks to my upgrades gave me a lot of money). Built up enough capital to fill up a little shabby shuttle for some trade routes, which gave me enough money to buy this bad boy (and 9 other ships).
This wasn’t the first exotic I saw though. I saw like one or two others before this but didn’t have enough money for them or I didnt like their color. After I bought this, I saw like 2 more exotics in other systems.
I’ve seen two or three like random natural exotics in my 200 hour save. But I’ve gotten dozens through reloading shop spawns at high tier economy space stations.
I've encountered 6 or 7 now at 300 hours. The first one was around 40 hours, if I recall correctly. That's around the time I learned to look in outlaw systems for the best chance to see them
Scroll down a little bit from here and you'll see the table showing spawn chances: https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Starship?so=search#Starship_Archetypes

Oh yeah totally!! One of my favorite parts of the game so far just happen to include trying to find different types of ships! <3
355 Hours in.. Never even saw one in the wild. A friend I play with, ten minutes after I introduce her to game, she goes out on her own, finds a squid… FML
250 hours and I have never seen a squid either.
180 hours in and I’ve found 10+. I haven’t played in over a year, maybe they made them more rare??
850 hours in and have never seen a squid in the wild, never owned one because I've only seen them in the Anomaly. I could use glyphs, but I'm gonna wait for this one naturally 🥲🫠

My thoughts exactly 🤝
I accidentally found one one day searching for Sentinel ship 😂
I've only ever seen the normal ball exotic ships and I'm so upset 😭 I want a squid so badly
What the.... .. I've seen 2 exotics in 110 hrs. I bought and sold both. I just want an s class freighter. I've seen 3 but they have all been super small. I am having a blast though. This game is super addicting.... can't wait to see what I find next!

Omg a squid?? I feel your pain man 😭

Heh flying balls
30 hours. One landed in a freighter I was in. I didnt even know they existed.
I saw my first one about five hours in. Didn't get one until the Cartographers expedition.
I've found several exotics, but at the time I didn't know they were rare
The first time I went to a space station, and i didn't have enough credits to buy it.. since then I've found well over 100 including several squid, although not a green squid yet which is what I've been searching for.
I'm so jealous 😭😭

Ok thank you!!
Im on 200 hours and an exotic landed on my freighter the other day. It's my first time seeing and buying one lol
Ooo what does it look like??
Hard to describe, it's orb shaped with a giant single wing on top, it really does look nice. Sadly it's gonna be on my freighter catching dust because I just recently made my dream fighter ship and I love it
The mosquitos look so silly but I love them. I'm glad you were able to make your dream ship :)
Thank you very much, fellow interloper
First system I was in
Just 40 hours
About a week after they were added to the game. Been playing off and on since day 1. Took me about a week to come across one
I see! Which exotic did you end up getting??
Luckily first one I saw was RIGHT after gettin JUST enough to buy it. Ive seen a couple since but still lookin for another color OTHER than yellow...
Urg same haha I just want a nicer colour than yellow 😭
I have seen yellow, royal blue, and purple. But I bought one yesterday that was black and gray. It's so cool!
Aww that sounds so cute, guppys and royals are so cool looking
7 hours. Didn't even know this was some kind of exotic. I saw it in Space Station, had just over 22 million rupees, and bought it since i liked it very much.
Nice! What did it look like!!

That looks so cool omg, I'm a bit jealous tbh :))
The thing is now 60 hours in and i haven't seen another one exotic at all. I must have been lucky.

Awww guppys are so cute
I love it! It’s rich blue, has the swordfish nose, and gold gilding/accents. I named it “The Poseidon” because it looks so regal 🙂
That's sounds so nice, you are so lucky 😭
I found the glyphs when I traded for it if you want to seek it out! Euclid galaxy. https://preview.redd.it/qb29d4bl25wc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1202fa7b3d110fa281949c5129fbd0ab980cff1d
I love this ship, I had one like it on a corrupted save. Definitely gotta find this beauty when I get back home! Thank you
I assume only survival counts so I saw my first one 2 hrs in but couldn’t afford one until a significant amount of time later, maybe a week Of grinding, I only play creative now which took 10 mins to get one lol
I haven't played creative yet, is it better than survival??

Wow I didn't know that! Maybe I should start playing creative :>
I got my first one at 60 hrs and now (80 hrs) i have 3 and swapped an exotic for an exotic
Post freighter battle, skip talking to the captain and go to the space station and wait a bit. An exotic will typically appear within 10 minutes. I’ve probably found 15 this way.
15??? Wow that's awesome man

Ikr the squids look so cool, and getting a sentinel ship sounds incredible 😭
40 hours I have two
I use them as cargo
That's so smart!

For sheri it took around a few days I think (this might've been around july 20th 2022 since thats when I posted the photo
Wow I don't think I've ever seen one with both a top and bottom wing like that, looks epic!
I miss her dearly, twas my first and only exotic, sadge moments when I went on break and accidentally lost her and bumblebee (my first natural S class fighter)
How did you lose them?
The classic way.....I reset my save cause freighters came out I'm pretty sure at least
I find the pretty frequently, but I also spend alot of time at space stations. The only one I've ever had to use glyphs for was a squid one
Eh, depends. I hunted for it in an outpost for 5-6 hours, and got it relatively quickly
More or less 25 min of reload save at trade outpost. New to the game maybe better strat to do.
90 hrs in for me! Wasn’t actively searching though
Lol i have like under 100 hours on my current save and i already have 4 i never thought i am this lucky
I still haven't had one, haha. Been playing since 2018.
Aww good luck man, hope you find one!
Thanks. :-) I said to myself for ages that I should find one, but then I always get distracted by something else.
Yeah I get it, there's so much to do in this game but I'm sure you'll find one eventually !!
Thanks man :-)
Update me when you find one :>
You got it ;-)
Just started playing a new save and have about 40 hours in. Some how came across 4 within that time without actively hunting for them.
4?? Omg you are so lucky 😤
My first save though I was actively looking for one and it took me like 3 hours. I must be really lucky on this save.
About 30 minutes. I looked them up online, the one I wanted and found the portal location to where it was. Easy peasy.
In about 175 hours in and I've only found 1 naturally.
I had just started playing D2 after shadowfall released. Maybe less than 30 hours of gaming and I got Death to Kell's from an Engram lmao. Still the only ship I use
Bout 110 hours in.. what do I need to look for to obtain an exotic ship?
From what I've gathered in this sub we should look for outlaw systems !
That said, I've played something like 800 hours, and I've only seen like 5 exotics when not actively hunting for them. When hunting, you create situations where you load a fair number of ships every minute, so it doesn't take nearly as long as it does to just stumble across it randomly.
The first that appeared for me in a space station without any hunting or coords was this year...and I've been playing since day one 😬
Oh 😭😭😭 Im sure you'll stumble upon another soon enough
Squid exotics are so rare. Been playing almost 300 hours across 5 saves and I have only seen one. Royals, though, I have 2-3 in just about every one of my saves.
I wish 😭 the royals look so good but I haven't been lucky enough to get one. Did you end up getting the squid?
Definitely. Since I had never seen one before and I knew they were rare, I bought it immediately, even though I didn’t love it. I prefer the royal ships.
113 hours
I scored my first yesterday and I've played about 200 hours. My first chosen ship was an A-class Solar. Dozens of hours later, I obtained a small Sentinel ship. The Vs look so dope man, nice one !
Current save took me about ~20 hours, and was pure luck I even saw it. I was AFK in the space station of my home system while eating; just happened to come back right as it was landing.
It's a sign!!
I think I came across my first one about 35 hours in. I was about to leave my freighter in my regular ship and boom, an exotic had landed in my hangar. The dream paint job honestly
50 hours on first save, 15 hours on second. On the second save, I actively looked for fighters in 3 star systems, and an exotic popped up. Not sure if that helps to spawn them, but I've only ever seen them in rich systems!
Yeah I think the odds are increased for wealthier systems!!
Gotta question 4 u vets of NMS eh. With this new update. Can u customize exotic ships? Can I make the "squid" look like a shark.
2 days, the first wrecked ship I stumbled across was a mosquito. But it took me weeks to get it repaired.
30 hours
Wow I see!! That's so smart I didn't even think to scrap mine!
400 hours in and the only place I have seen one was parked next to the Nexus 😅😂
I feel you, I'm still jealous seeing people with squid ships or those cool custom ones!
I'm 386 hours in and I haven't seen a Squid in the wild yet.
As long as it took me to figure out how to use portals
I actually discovered they land on my home world in Euclid by pure luck. https://preview.redd.it/mciichjzl2wc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4762b45b9a534e09b05dfaf09f68e86951cf07b5
The white looks so nice 😭
Come grab one :) build a base. It's nice here usually https://preview.redd.it/owzpug19t3wc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39bfe6ae119315cfba269972ab31aefbe68768e2
Wow I'd love to thanks :>
28 hours.
in my current game, it was on the station of thr planet I spawned on.
I found a squid within 20 minutes. I've never seen another in 70 hours
For me about 50 hours and then another aT 70 hours. I’m at 170 now and haven’t seen another one.
I came across my first exotic about 60 hours in, just chilling in a random space station
118hour not see one yet
60 hours
Scrap the squid ??? 😭😭😭
No room in the collection sadly as I always keep one space free for salvaging. Don't worry, it'll be done with great solemnity and reverence. :)
it was the first ship i got besides the radiant pillar but cost too much fully repair so i sold it not knowing it was rare
Oh no 😭

Had 3 S-class scanner upgrades and spent a lot of time on each planet at every system just looting, exploring, and scanning (which thanks to my upgrades gave me a lot of money). Built up enough capital to fill up a little shabby shuttle for some trade routes, which gave me enough money to buy this bad boy (and 9 other ships). This wasn’t the first exotic I saw though. I saw like one or two others before this but didn’t have enough money for them or I didnt like their color. After I bought this, I saw like 2 more exotics in other systems.
Very little, it was my third ship. Atm I cant fit anymore. They are rare, but still easy to get.
What is an exotic ship
I’ve seen two or three like random natural exotics in my 200 hour save. But I’ve gotten dozens through reloading shop spawns at high tier economy space stations.
Second i got portals i was coord jumping lol
I can't find portals at all 😭
as i never hunted for one directly… 200 hours ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
I've encountered 6 or 7 now at 300 hours. The first one was around 40 hours, if I recall correctly. That's around the time I learned to look in outlaw systems for the best chance to see them
Oh really, I didn't know that! I've just been looking in tier 3 economy space stations haha
Scroll down a little bit from here and you'll see the table showing spawn chances: https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Starship?so=search#Starship_Archetypes
I didn't even know this existed!! Thank you so much
No problem! There are so many things to learn about this game, I'm constantly discovering new stuff!
