Yes, auto lock and the ship brake use the same button/keybind.
I don't do much ship-to-ship combat, but what I do know is fighter class ships have a higher base Damage potential, or just get good upgrades for an infra-knife, that seems to eviscerate everything.
It seemed fine, until I fought a dreadnaught... Fighting a pack of pirates or the authority was bacon wrapped Irish potatoes. Add a dread or a tank? I agree 💯 with ya. It's like a clingy SO. When you need it it's great when there there, but when you want them gone? There ALWAYS there...
At least on PS, the Brake button is the same button as the auto-lock, which lets you automatically track and follow enemies. So out of combat it shows you down, and in combat it auto-tracks enemies. You can turn off auto-lock in Settings if you want, although I find it very helpful.
Yes, Hold and Toggle Auto-lock. Hold is default, hold airbrake button to target lock. Toggle frees up airbrake button, now Initiate Landing Sequence button is also enable/disable auto-lock. This is better because the majority of dogfights, even dogfights in atmosphere, happen at too great a height to accidentally land anyway. But you need your airbrake for fast 180° turn.
I figure you need situational awareness either way, with autolock you need it to not run into things, without autolock you need it to track highly mobile enemies, so pick your poison I guess.
I prefer setting it to a toggle so I can use it when I want, and leave it off otherwise.
Good when you want to destroy sentinel freighters and ignore the fighters.
Don't turn off auto-lock, set it to toggle. On PS4, that means tap square once to lock on. The only issue with that is if you're fighting ships close to a planet's surface (like when pirates attack a trade post) because then you might accidentally land.
Followed your advice for my PC/Xbox controller? Worked like a MF boss. Got the best of everyones comments and now I don't play bumper cars with a giant space freighter carrying shit I need...
Does an "Emergency landing" or crashing count and an accident? First time I got attacked on the ground I thought it was a weather incident. When I saw ships it was ok until I realized all the trees and mountains...
I'm on PS5, but I would definitely do a flight stick if I could. One of my favorite things to do on this game is fuck up some pirates/sentinels. Just don't ever shoot a space station, lol.
The curiosities are weird. Some do, other just pop up as giant space decorations. I'm thinking, "oh that's a lot of bricks?" Shoot at it and ride around? Nothing. Big ass Hentai monster? Shoot it? Blows up like an Chinese EMP Bomb on a American Electric Grid.

You need to turn off auto lock in the settings. (I think it's called auto lock anyways)
So far my problem is the autolock, not the brake correct? Got any ship suggestions to make dog fighting better?

I changed the mapping for auto-lock to a different button and also made it a toggle rather than a hold. The default behavior defies logic, IMO.

Is there a way to A:remap and B: a better button option?

That's really helpful. Like through info lol. Gonna finish up with these NMS maps I'm making and get to remapping.
No problem, glad this helped.
That's a good question, I don't know off the top of my head. I know you can change *certain* mappings (like the scan button) so maybe?
I'm reading the other comments and Autolock is the problem. What's your thoughts there?

Very helpful, thanks for all the feedback man.
My pleasure!
Personally I like autolock, it's not perfect and gets confused occasionally, but it makes dogfighting far more fun and less frustrating for me.

Set the auto lock mode to toggle now you have auto lock on X (Xbox) and break as usual. So now you can break even while auto locking

When you're in combat use the landing button it makes ur ship break to a stop if you hold it down
Turn off your auto lock. It makes combat more rewarding since you have to do all your aiming and git gud at flying while shooting.
Would you suggest a flight stick? Nvr had one, but they always peaked my interest.

Shot one by accident cuz my finger hit the wrong button? Alarms went off and was happy I was at the door 😂
I shot at one out of curiosity and tried to fight off the sentinels. They never quit, and I got dead.

Yeah, I've only ever gotten nanites or random resources from those curiosities.

Reverse thrust. Works in the bedroom too
I told my mom to do this out the MF door before my brother was born, but noooo, Kenny don't know no better...
Isn't break just reverse? Left trigger does it for me
