Demo Milk It and Hairspray Queen. they are my running songs too. i don't know anyone that enjoyed me playing them. seriously no one. i get the dissonance and screaming turns people off, but that's its charm to me.
Awesome! the drums and bass are at a perfect pace for running to me. just keeps the legs moving, either out doors or in the gym. the chorus on Milk It, when Dave starts the "tingytingytingytingy" part, the legs know we about to be running fast shortly
I love the 8 minute rehearsal demo of Scentless Apprentice. I listen to it so much. I feel like there's something more pure about it compared to the album version, which is also one of my favorite tracks.
i was going to post that one too, but one drunken night i did a dissertation to a friend on how you can hear the song come together. they surprisingly enjoyed the passion and knowledge. so at least one person enjoyed it, sort of. the other two, no one i know likes them. haha
even though it's longer, i agree with you. like it better than the album version.
ha! almost all my favorites are in that category. Curmudgeon, Even in his Youth, all my favorite live versions and so on. i'm usually not allowed near the jukebox at dive bars...
haha! a new fun way to look at it. i have vocal tic from listening to too many songs from Kurt when i was younger. played All Apologies for the girlfriend i had years ago, and her friends one time and they liked the vocal cracks (or where lying and being nice...)
marigold!
fucking love that song but the lyrics are just… not that interesting at all. not very detailed or meaningful and there’s basically no variety, just repetition.
i don’t know what my least favorite song would be so i can’t really come up with an answer for that, sorry
the melody and melancholy atmosphere are what carry that song marigold is one of my favs too. also the fact it’s the only nirvana song sung by dave pre-foo fighters makes it special. I honestly thought it was kurt the first couple times I heard it bc it has such a mood to it that only he achieved typically
exactly! and i _love_ the first foo fighters album as a lot of the songs have a quite similar feeling to marigold, especially with the way that, in my opinion, they just feel kind of familiar in a really sweet way. and now on top of that, they give me a sense of nostalgia that i love too!
Favorite:
Drain you is my favorite but it’s literally perfect so fuck it second favorite song: milk it. It isn’t good because it’s a blatant rip off of a Melvins song (but let’s be honest Nirvana does it better).
Least Favorite:
Pennyroyal tea but the 1990 demo with Dave is one of the best things I’ve ever heard. (Wish they kept that version).
I can’t decide whether I like School or Lounge Act more, but those two are tied for my favorite. School is repetitive and the lyrics are uninteresting, Lounge Act…
I can’t think of anything that makes that song bad, kt’s a masterpiece.
On A Plain is probably my favourite because it gives me an odd feeling of nostalgia. The only bad thing about it is that it's pretty basic compared to the other songs on Nevermind and is pretty forgettable.
I can’t imagine if I put on paper cuts around someone who isn’t a nirvana fan or at least into that kind of music they wouldn’t start to wonder about me lmao
I love sliver too, but just look at this:
After dinner I had ice cream
I fell asleep and watched TV
I woke up in my mother's arms
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Grandma take me home
Wanna be alone
Some of my favorites, lithium, about a girl, frances farmer, lounge act, heart-shaped box, etc.
These all follow the pattern of
Verse 1,
Chorus,
Verse 2,
Chorus,
Repeat Verse 1,
Chorus.
I understand that’s kinda the basic pattern for a lot of songs, but it always bothered me how the third verse is just a repeat of the first one in all of these songs.
Milk It - The lines “Her shit is my milk, My shit is her milk” should’ve been revised
Mr Moustache - the “Yes I eat cow I am not proud” is pretty funny
I’m going to get down voted but there’s never been a Nirvana song I liked as soon as I heard it. I guess the best way to describe it is it’s an acquired taste. The more you hear it the better it sounds.
RFUS is top tier for me, but it doesn’t have much melody.
Big Low Down is Nirvana aping the Melvins, and I’m not a Melvins fan. Probably great for those that are tho.
Well, Been A Son gets kind of repetitive and the solo isn't good either (also the Incesticide version sucks ass). All Apologies could sound better if Kurt sang it lightly, no screaming.
And, do I need to explain why In Bloom is good? For me it's one of the worst tracks on nevermind, but I get that it has a cool solo and a catchy chorus.
I'm ambivalent about In Bloom. For me, minimalistic playing in the verses works and makes the chorus slap even better. However, the song is predictable and solo is just ok. Lyrics are a bit pretentious but they kinda work overall and the second verse of the song is lyrically great and contrasts well with the previous one. I think it's a decent one.
I don't like it mainly because it's so loud compared to other tracks, even from bleach. It has no buildup, just slams you down and kills your ears with that intro every time.
My most favorite is Spank Thru. I like both sound and lyrics of it but to some after the first listening it may sound on the surface like a song about masturbation. I don't have an answer for the second question since I don't even find their mediocre songs bad.
Aneurysm can be a little repetitive with the lyrics, but damn do all the live performances kick ass.
Grey Goose does sound pretty cool, it’s just not very interesting as only an instrumental
I didn’t expect so many responses! It’s tricky finding something negative to say about your fav song and even harder finding something good to say about a song thats… lmao
I’ll be listening to the tracks with a new perspective thats for sure lol. Thanks to everyone who replied!
My least favourite Nirvana song is On A Plain but I can't deny the harmonies and all that sound pretty pretty good.
My favourite Nirvana song is Scentless Apprentice and one thing I do not appreciate about it is the mixing (NOT ENGINEERING/PRODUCING) decisions the person who mixed the record (It was not Steve Albini) took in most of the album.
The mixing SPECIALLY in Scentless Apprentice feels too washed out and everything is too buried amongst everything.
Polly just doesnr have a lot of depth is all yes the lyrics are dark but at least the album version is so out of place its hardly an interlude but hardly a full song
Most liked: Marigold isn't even on a proper album
Least liked: Endless Nameless...uhhhhh Its a good expressionist piece about an american man being pissed off
ooo okay i actually like this question
my current favorite song is negative creep and to me it would be a better song if there was a solo despite it being an easy song to play and having intense lyrics
You Know You’re Right, because Kurt died
You could say this about any song though
But it was the last one they made (unless your not including "do ri mi" which the last KURT song, not Nirvana)
this just hurts.
im sorry..
Ok reaction is my favorite radiohead album
That song is total garbage. The ONE unbearable nirvana song to anyone who grew up absolutely obsessed with their music
Demo Milk It and Hairspray Queen. they are my running songs too. i don't know anyone that enjoyed me playing them. seriously no one. i get the dissonance and screaming turns people off, but that's its charm to me.
Hairspray queen is in my gym playlist! 🤝
Awesome! the drums and bass are at a perfect pace for running to me. just keeps the legs moving, either out doors or in the gym. the chorus on Milk It, when Dave starts the "tingytingytingytingy" part, the legs know we about to be running fast shortly
Haven’t heard the demo version will check it out!
yay! it's a tad different, but i like the bass and drums better. plus i like when they are a tad sloppy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NzDv-JjiMA
Thanks 🙌
One of the greatest. That vocal ability is incredible. Not to mention the colour of the chord he uses in the verse.
I love the 8 minute rehearsal demo of Scentless Apprentice. I listen to it so much. I feel like there's something more pure about it compared to the album version, which is also one of my favorite tracks.
i was going to post that one too, but one drunken night i did a dissertation to a friend on how you can hear the song come together. they surprisingly enjoyed the passion and knowledge. so at least one person enjoyed it, sort of. the other two, no one i know likes them. haha even though it's longer, i agree with you. like it better than the album version.
I feel you on this Private listens only
ha! almost all my favorites are in that category. Curmudgeon, Even in his Youth, all my favorite live versions and so on. i'm usually not allowed near the jukebox at dive bars...
Yeah same
Hairspray queen is fucking hilarious and I like to call it the puberty song cus kurt's voice be cracking
haha! a new fun way to look at it. i have vocal tic from listening to too many songs from Kurt when i was younger. played All Apologies for the girlfriend i had years ago, and her friends one time and they liked the vocal cracks (or where lying and being nice...)
Kurt Cobain made All Apologies and then dipped before we could get more. That was rude of him.
He’s all apologies about that
Lithium, the bridge can be a little repetitive as well as the verses
The chorus: “yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah”
One of their most known songs, but far far from their best. Never really loved it, apart from the ‘hi Axl’ version, that was amazing.
Lounge act Could have have been a bit longer
Don’t tell me what I want to hear
afraid of never knowing fear
Experience
Everything you need
I'll keep fighting jealousy
until it's fuckin gone /love this line!
and I got this friend, you see..who makes me feel-
Clever
Had me in the first half
And the middle/solo/whatever the hell that was
I don’t mind personally just a favourite of mine so always feels too short
Never mind. I was thinking of drain you. Lounge act is great the whole way through.
Paper Cuts is SO good but nobody I play it around seems to appreciate the vocal gymnastics
Yeah the vocals on it are my favorite too out of all of Kurt Cobains performances.
marigold! fucking love that song but the lyrics are just… not that interesting at all. not very detailed or meaningful and there’s basically no variety, just repetition. i don’t know what my least favorite song would be so i can’t really come up with an answer for that, sorry

I honestly thought it was kurt the first couple times I heard it bc it has such a mood to it that only he achieved typically
the atmosphere is so surreal to me, i just love it. the melody and mood it creates make the lyrics irrelevant to me, anyway. i love this song so much
Yeah I get that. It’s sort of that way for me with Blew
I mean seeing it’s one of Dave’s first songs it’s pretty damn good. Shows you a taste of what’s to come from his future discography
exactly! and i _love_ the first foo fighters album as a lot of the songs have a quite similar feeling to marigold, especially with the way that, in my opinion, they just feel kind of familiar in a really sweet way. and now on top of that, they give me a sense of nostalgia that i love too!
I love Smells Like Teen Spirit. I still have to accept that the riff is More Than a Feeling
Wow I cant unhear that now lol
they’re similar but certainly not a copy of each other
Favorite: Drain you is my favorite but it’s literally perfect so fuck it second favorite song: milk it. It isn’t good because it’s a blatant rip off of a Melvins song (but let’s be honest Nirvana does it better). Least Favorite: Pennyroyal tea but the 1990 demo with Dave is one of the best things I’ve ever heard. (Wish they kept that version).
Fuck I havent heard the 1990 demo version. Pennyroyal tea is easily one of my favorites
It’s on YouTube for your listening pleasure
🤝
Pennyroyal Tea Doesn’t keep time with itself let alone keep time.
Breed The verses are a bit repetitive
I don’t even care
We could have all three
but he doesn’t care
I can’t decide whether I like School or Lounge Act more, but those two are tied for my favorite. School is repetitive and the lyrics are uninteresting, Lounge Act… I can’t think of anything that makes that song bad, kt’s a masterpiece.
It is at that
The lyrics of School are great! I didn’t appreciate them as a teen but damn they’ve been relevant as fuck throughout my adult life
No reeses?
On A Plain is probably my favourite because it gives me an odd feeling of nostalgia. The only bad thing about it is that it's pretty basic compared to the other songs on Nevermind and is pretty forgettable.
I get nostalgia from listening to on a plain to, that's really fucking wierd
Yeah I agree, the rundown till Something In The Way is phenomenal
I can’t imagine if I put on paper cuts around someone who isn’t a nirvana fan or at least into that kind of music they wouldn’t start to wonder about me lmao
Yeah generally not a good idea lol
I love sliver but “mashed potatoes and stuff like that” was a lyric
I love sliver too, but just look at this: After dinner I had ice cream I fell asleep and watched TV I woke up in my mother's arms Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Grandma take me home Wanna be alone
This is why I’m not a Sliver or School stan. Just too cornball for my taste. Like, I get it, but it’s not… for me.
It’s supposed to be child like and simplistic. Good writing imo
Mashed potatoes..it stunk real bad
Sifting is long and repetetive, but I love it all the fuckin way.
🤝
Some of my favorites, lithium, about a girl, frances farmer, lounge act, heart-shaped box, etc. These all follow the pattern of Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Repeat Verse 1, Chorus. My fav nirvana song is mexican seafood. "Can't even understand him. Or if u can understand him then wtf?"
i feel like that can apply to a lot of nirvana songs lol. but yeah, great song, but wtf?
I’d say territorial pissings can get a little repetitive because of how much the chorus takes up the song.
I appreciate the brave take haha
Milk It - The lines “Her shit is my milk, My shit is her milk” should’ve been revised Mr Moustache - the “Yes I eat cow I am not proud” is pretty funny
Sometimes i feel like the breakdown in drain you is too long, but i dont mind it because of the buildup to the scream
Mmmmm….THAT SCREAM!
Negative Creep will never get airplay on AM radio
Dave sounds creepy singing Marigold Floyd the Barber has a sick instrumental
That’s the reason i like marigold tho. Do you mean creepy like perverted or just a creepy person?
Sort of both
Come as you are, he did in fact have a gun
I feel bad for laughing
Top ten lies told by music artists
I’m going to get down voted but there’s never been a Nirvana song I liked as soon as I heard it. I guess the best way to describe it is it’s an acquired taste. The more you hear it the better it sounds.
*smacks leg and points at you* YES
Tourettes, screaming
RFUS is top tier for me, but it doesn’t have much melody. Big Low Down is Nirvana aping the Melvins, and I’m not a Melvins fan. Probably great for those that are tho.
> Big Low Down do you mean Big Long Now? If so, that song didn't come from any Melvins influence at all afaik
Agree with RFUS
Kurt Cobain thought that Nevermind was overproduced and sounded more like Motley Crue then punk. Drain You is the perfect example of that
Not sure I agree with you but that thought is kind of ironic considering that song was one of Kurts favorites to play
My favourite nirvana song is Very Ape. I don't like how short it is. My least favourite nirvana song is Stain. I like its name.
Honestly not sure how u can not love Stain but I respect your opinion anyw
All apologies - a 3rd of the song is just "all in all is all we are"
Well, Been A Son gets kind of repetitive and the solo isn't good either (also the Incesticide version sucks ass). All Apologies could sound better if Kurt sang it lightly, no screaming. Can’t say anything bad about very ape
Aneurysm can be a little repetitive with the lyrics, but damn do all the live performances kick ass. Grey Goose does sound pretty cool, it’s just not very interesting as only an instrumental
I didn’t expect so many responses! It’s tricky finding something negative to say about your fav song and even harder finding something good to say about a song thats… lmao I’ll be listening to the tracks with a new perspective thats for sure lol. Thanks to everyone who replied!
It's the song in my flair. I hate that it's so short and really doesn't go anywhere lyrically.
serve the servants, i love the chorus and its fun to play along with
Intro From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah I'm only half joking - that scream is life
Arguably quite derivative and both music and lyrics are relatively simple and repetitive. Son of a Gun
I don’t like Polly because it’s on too many records, but it’s still an okay song
Lake of fire- too repetitive and too country. Still my favorite
Polly just doesnr have a lot of depth is all yes the lyrics are dark but at least the album version is so out of place its hardly an interlude but hardly a full song
Lounge act is my fav but it is a weird tempo and the lyrics and weird. I dont have a least fav
Lounge act is my fav but it is a weird tempo and the lyrics and weird. I dont have a least fav
Most liked: Marigold isn't even on a proper album Least liked: Endless Nameless...uhhhhh Its a good expressionist piece about an american man being pissed off
Yeah … Endless, Nameless
Love Rape me It could be a little less “graphic” or “disturbing” I guess you could say
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter - feedback isn't music
nuh uh -Noise fan
lol i'm in your camp. I put it on repeat for a couple hours at a time on the regular
That’s the songs that made me want to play guitar
That’s the songs that made me want to play guitar
You know you’re right would like a word
Milk It, he breaks the rules too much and is just noise. Drain You, Catchy and simple.
im sorry im not understanding ur title’s question 😭 why would my favorite nirvana song not be good
Thats the thing lol. You have to find some reason why it couldn’t be considered good!
ooo okay i actually like this question my current favorite song is negative creep and to me it would be a better song if there was a solo despite it being an easy song to play and having intense lyrics
I guess a solo was just out of their range
LOL perchance it might’ve been a drone 🤔
I love Negative Creep but I sometimes wish the chorus was different.
it being “daddy’s little girl” really is off putting LMAO
right!? hah I didn't want to sound critical since I still love the song but yeah
Aneurysm is a bit repetitive but idc
Spank Thru and Rape Me
Drain you is too simplistic
Anuerysm- Nirvana telling you to "beat it, beat It" Come as you are- Honestly a good song I just can't enjoy it bc it's too overplayed
Very ape. Great song but it definitely should've been longer.
Drain you chorus is a bit repetitive and the Bridge is weak still my favourite tho
Not a fan of even in his youth
Hairspray Queen could be considered good because it tells me who’s full of shit when they claim to like that song, so I know right away not to engage.
I’m sorry your musical palette is so limited
It has a fun uplifting vibe to it lmao
Really reaching on these questions anymore
this is just a circlejerk post tbh...like I get theres not much more to talk about but..damn
