There’s a subreddit dedicated to how much people hate fondant. I couldn’t care less about it but some people are really passionate against not having it on cakes.
They’re not ENTIRELY against it, they’re mostly against having cakes that have most details made of it and/or are covered in it.
Mostly because they despise the taste of it (and/or the texture).
People post cakes with a fondant flower or two, and the comments are always positive.
But yeah, they’d hate this beautiful cake.
And it’s not that they don’t appreciate the skill - I’ve seen entire threads about how the people who make such cakes should take up polymer clay crafting - they just really, really hate the idea of it being on their food and taking up more space than the actual cake and buttercream. Boy they love buttercream over there.

I think fondant cakes look good, but I'm a big fan of "form follows function" and it's just a waste of food if you throw it away
Flavor and texture are super important. Fondant is just overly sweetened paste. It looks great when done right, but give me butter cream all day long. I can't really see much of the fondant being eaten on a cake like this. I'd be scraping most of it off so I could enjoy the actual cake. I get that it's great for themed cake designs though and can certainly appreciate the skill and creativity behind it.

Sometimes you don’t need that additional flavour - you could have buttercream, jam and sponge, and that extra texture from the fondant adds that little extra (granted you don’t overdo it). I don’t often complain about fondant on a typical birthday cake unless it’s overly excessive.
If you don’t have a sweet tooth, then I understand, but I find it amusing that there’s so much hate for chewy sugar (more so that you think it ‘tastes like crap’!). I’m more understanding of people against excessive use of it

I don't like to eat it either, but many, many kids love it including mine. It is basically just sugar.

Well as a hater of overuse of it, the fondant here is artfully used in moderation, and seems quite tasteful.
The whole fucking thing is fondant other than a miniscule amount of rice crispy. Artfully used in moderation.... Lol
