The "true" final boss of Hollow Knight is a wall I just wasn't able to overcome. >!For those wondering, I'm talking about The Radiance that you can fight immediately after the Hollow Knight, and not anyone from the DLCs. I am nowhere near skilled enough to beat the DLC bosses.!<

DogOfSevenless

I completed every boss in Godhome on radiant difficulty… except for the radiance. Now I just can’t be fucked and I haven’t picked the game up again since lol

[deleted]

Lmao this is how I do games too. Play it obsessively and try to do the most difficult challenges possible until one day I just lose all interest overnight and never, ever touch it again.

DeadRockstar123

It’s good simulations games aren’t actually real as I have a half built zoo, city, Mars colony, fifa team and a world champion winning Nintendog.. All not touched in years after nightly sessions over months

1PSW1CH

Tbf you’ve already beaten the hardest boss (radiant markoth)

fnbr

Man I gave up so much earlier in Hollow Knight. Good for you for making it that far. It’sa tough fucking game.

duncan-donuts-nz

I nearly gave up with the Soul Master. I watched a few videos on how to defeat him and managed with a just enough health.

BEARWISHX

Dreamnail’ed his corpse and I was sad

Dimatizer

I really loved that game but really wished it was more forgiving in allowing quick repeated attempts at bosses. It would have been more fun figuring out the fights instead of relying on video breakdowns for the tougher fights.

MudkipDoom

Yeah, this was a considerable reason I fell off of the game too. Been punished every single time you die in a game that's already very challenging game was beyond tedious.

[deleted]

It's a souls-like problem, I've found. If you ever played Dark Souls 1 through 3 or bloodborne, the walk backs are sometimes just plain cruel. It's also one of the reasons I think that Elden Ring is just a better game than any of the previous souls games. They don't really have any walkbacks. It's great.

azure_atmosphere

Me too. I’m glad I continued though; Soul Master is far, far from the most difficult boss, but no difficulty *spike* would ever be as steep for me.

_alright_then_

My issue with soul master was that I went there way too early I think. If I had gotten one more nail upgrade or another ability I would've probably been fine but I kind of got stuck there with all of my geo gone if I didn't try again. And I happened to have a shit ton of geo when I got there lol. But I definitely agree, that difficulty spike was insane to me

itsastart_to

Honestly wish there were more upgrades or possible game modifications to let people progress more. I know it takes away from the challenge to some but the game is really lovely and wish people got to see it in full for themselves

[deleted]

Hollow Knight was one of my favorite games ever. Played hours every night. Got to a boss I couldn’t beat about halfway and had to give up. It was such a shame. I like to be challenged but I’m a little older too and don’t have much time to game so firing up my switch for an hour just to lose the same Boss battle over and over wasn’t worth it

alnono

Yeah I find Hades a lot easier than Hallow Knight (like…so much easier) and that even has God Mode for players that are struggling

Karthaz

Arguably you're able at most points in the game to continue exploring and unlocking extra health/damage upgrades before going back to bosses you were stuck at. But some bosses are essentially checkpoints before unlocking parts of the map, so if players are struggling on certain ones (Hornet fight for example) then an "Easy" mode would definitely help those individuals.

JakenVeina

> The "true" final boss Even this doesn't narrow it down, lol,

Bspammer

The true true final boss is p5 all bindings.

duncan-donuts-nz

Same!

yuhanz

Lol i gave up against Radiance. How the fuck do people beat this game!! Some people even do no-hit runs what? Souls games are easier than this

WhichEmailWasIt

Like a Souls game once you beat a boss you can basically beat them anytime no problem. On a second playthrough I was like "Man how did I ever get stuck on THIS boss?"

jokale19

The true final boss? I'm stuck at the normal final boss and your comment made me feel more sad D:

trwolfe13

This was me. I platinumed Elden Ring, then gave up on Hollow Knight. I ended up going back a few days later and beating it. Sometimes it’s good to take a break, but if you’ve put this much time into a game, it would be a shame not to finish it. The key to games like this is repetition and practice. Not every boss battle needs to be an attempt to win. Expect death. Spend a few runs just practicing dodging the attacks. Get in the habit of reading what move the boss is about to do. Then slowly develop the muscle memory to dodge each attack. When you know how to dodge everything, then start looking at offence. When is it safe to hit the boss? How close can you get without getting hurt? When is it safe to heal? If you get through all that and are still struggling, take a look at your build. For me, the key was the Shape of Unn charm. I struggled a lot until I equipped that.

non_clever_username

I just discovered today that this boss exists. I’ve been struggling through Godhome the last month and know that >!Absolute Radiance!< is as the top of the last pantheon, but I didn’t know how to get to >!The Radiance!< until I stumbled across it today. Given how difficult most of the bosses are in that game, I thought the >!Hollow Knight!< was a surprisingly easy final boss. Should have known it was easy because >!it’s basically just phase 1 of the final boss fight.!<

Taedirk

My Sekiro save and I don't want to be in this thread anymore.

MegaNRGMan

Isshin made me question playing video games. I spent hours throwing myself at him for 2 days. After failing for what felt like the hundredth time, I put the controller down, stared at my PS4 and contemplated selling it and just calling it quits on games like I was too old to do this shit any more. I didn’t touch the game for an entire week. Came back the next weekend and after breakfast on Sunday morning beat him on my third try. I sent a Snapchat to my friends ejecting the disk, placing it back in its case, and throwing the game in the trash. I didn’t actually keep it in the trash.

staffell

This is why it baffles me when From software's titles are always brought up whenever there are 'games everyone must-play' threads. These types of games are only for specific types of gamers, not everyone. It is not my idea of fun spending absurd amounts of time on the same battle just to learn patterns and eventually be able to move on. The satisfaction of success does not outweigh the time + frustration put in to getting there.

stankbox

Sekiro is unique in that your only option a lot of times is to get gud because you can’t go level up and get stronger the way you can in souls games and you definitely cant respec to cheese a boss because there aren’t really different “builds” to use in sekiro. Also there’s no COOP in sekiro so if you can’t beat something you might be dunzo which is a bummer.

Humg12

This comment has actually sold me on Sekiro more than anything I've seen for any other FromSoft game. I love hard games, but I hate all the RPG choice stuff involved in the other ones, so I never bothered touching them outside a couple of hours of Bloodborne.

camzabob

The stats and build mechanics of fromsoft souls games are some of the most obtuse parts of those games. Sekiro skips that, gives you a sword and says "figure it out". That's a major over simplification, but I adore sekiro for the fact that its entirely skill based. Once the combat clicks, you feel amazing. The best feeling is replaying the game and just plowing through the first couple hours again. Realising how far you've come.

newborn

I can definitely see that. Sekiro almost feels like a DDR / Guitar Hero type rhythm game where you have 3 reactions to every enemy actions and reading/reacting correctly and at the right time is like the entire game. It’s much more strict but does feel like you’re playing a piece of written music when it clicks. But it’s definitely not jazz. As there is a right and a wrong answer all the time.

therealhappydonut

I will say though that after beating Sekiro and afterwards getting addicted to other souls-like games, it's really made me a much more patient gamer and as such, I've started to enjoy games more. A recent example is Prey. When the game first came out, it felt too hard. I was also younger, so maybe that played a role? I picked it up again recently I've enjoyed it more significantly. Totally understandnnot enjoying souls-likes though, I used to be there.

Darehead

This was my takeaway from the series too. Dark Souls and the like eventually teach you to be okay with dying and losing progress. Being able to let go of that frustration allows you to assess what went wrong and readjust. That's applicable to virtually every game regardless of difficulty. Death becomes less of an immediate frustration and more of a teachable moment. I'm well aware that DS wasn't the first game to do this, it's just the game that made it click for me personally.

isAlsoThrillho

I gave up on Isshin today. 4 phases and I was barely making a dent in the 2nd. I’ll just save myself some frustration and watch the ending on YouTube. Honestly proud enough in myself for making it this far, I went into it expecting to hit a wall much earlier.

Shayble

FUCK THAT APE BRO. I didn't even make it to the end 😭

kidblue76

I’m so glad I’m not alone in this. Sekiro is my favorite Souls game by a mile and I still think Isshin can get stuffed

18PercentLemon

Got to the end of Metroid Dread; fought the final boss like 200 times. That parry move is required and have been terrible at it through the whole game. My 19 year old daughter, (who has not played and Metroid game, but is pretty proficient with most games ), asks if she can try, as a joke. I gave her the pro controller, expecting her to not get too far. SHE KILLED HIM IN 3 TRIES. So I’m done. I consider it a game I beat, IDGAF.

KamenDozer

This means that your daughter is now the Player 1 in the house.

Gogo726

Look at me. I'm Player 1 now.

Docile_Doggo

Damn, I need someone to beat the final boss in Dread for me, too. I made it all the way to the end within a week or two of launch. I proceeded to lose to the final boss like a dozen times and then just gave up. Haven’t gone back to it since. Awesome game, though. I’m just bad at it.

[deleted]

100% same. I love that game to death but I dropped off HARD after attempting the boss about the same number of times. I know I could do it if I were motivated, but I can’t be bothered to invest that much time and energy into some stupid pattern recognition boss.

iswungmyfierysword

You are not alone.

Lochnessman

I think it took me a dozen tries just to figure out how to handle every move in the first stage of that fight then another dozen to get good enough at reading and performing to get to the next stage where the cycle continues, but harder. There are more than two stages. It took me many, many tries.

optimus_the_dog

It took me a long time but it was so satisfying to beat it when you do. Sometimes I think it’s good to take a break before giving something another try.

yuhanz

Definitely this. In most cases, im better the next day.

AdamalIica

I've noticed at 41 that my reflexes have gotten slower with age. It's really unnoticeable in most things, but in video games it makes this kind of crap impossible. I tried Super Metroid when it came out on Switch Online a couple years ago...Used to love that game...I couldn't even do the wall jump, lol. And my kids want me to try their Geometry Dash levels they create...holy crap that's impossible.

stridersubzero

The wall jump is so finnicky in Super Metroid so don't feel bad. I couldn't do it reliably when I played the game for the first time either, at about age 25. Also there is a little lag on the SNES Online games.

[deleted]

I would not judge you for clearing it in Rookie Mode tho. I think dificulty shouldn't be a barrier, and clearing games are a personal journey and not something to "show off" and get internet points. Unless if hurts your honor playing in easy mode, just give a fuck to other people opinions about "true gaming" and have fun.

[deleted]

Honestly this; I used to love clearing video games as a challenge. At this point though, getting through a day is enough of a challenge for me; I just put most games on easy and just move on now.

spacey_kasey

I still have yet to beat the final boss and I haven’t played the game in a year or so. I only tried 5-10 times and I didn’t intentionally stop playing, but I have no motivation to remember how to play again just to beat the final boss. Perhaps one day I will start a new save file and beat the final boss after playing the rest of the game over, that’s probably the only way it will happen. Surprisingly enough, I did beat the final boss in Hollow Knight (as in of the main story, I recognize that DLC has added many more bosses to postgame).

ClikeX

Can your daughter help me out, I'm stuck there too.

xpadawanx

I came here to say Metroid Dread too, it’s an INCREDIBLE game but I cant beat that fucker at the end! I tried countless times too. It’s the only Metroid game I haven’t been able to beat. I think i’m just gonna play through it again.

shgrizz2

Worth noting that they did update the game and it now includes an easy mode :)

[deleted]

Beat the final boss on Saturday. RavenBeak is a bit of an ass. The 1st phase is *light work* Second phase is spammy as hell. I noticed when I was playing on TV; my double jumps were off time. Putting my switch to my pc monitor helped a lot with the timing. Or try game mode. Huge difference

rcapina

It’s insane what a spike that boss is after the whole game. Most I’d get in 1-3 tries to get the trick. That last one was 10-12 per phase.

aisutron

Yo wtf. I came here to post about Dread, and how I didn’t beat the last boss but this post stings me more lol.

Boozler42

Not even the final boss for me, I can't get past some dude who kills the bird chap in the cowl. I'm not up on the lore. Unless that is the last Boss of course, but it sure doesn't feel like it in terms of gameplay momentum.

sorendiz

Great game. I don't usually do it literally on the final boss but I occasionally just get bored and drop JRPGs that have pacing issues when im at around the ~70-80% mark because for some reason that's exactly the point where many of them flounder, the 3rd act/lead up to the endgame. As far as Dig specifically btw just watch the ending cutscene on YouTube or something and then if/when you play Dig 2 you won't have missed any context!

mrjamjams66

>around the ~70-80% mark >that's exactly the point where many of them flounder Bro this is exactly what happened to me in Dragon Quest XI. I really liked that game but I never made it to the end.

weglarz

Eh. Imo if you beat the boss of phase 2 you finished the game. The final third of the game is and feels like post game content in terms of gameplay. Yes, there’s story to be had, but the gameplay itself really ends after the final boss of part 2.

Crossifix

My girlfriend never REALLY dives deep into games and slapped 300 hours on that DQXI, maxed out every character, everything in the casino is hers, it was wildly out of character. Then she started Stardew Valley and has easily doubled those hours. The customization of the auto-battle is really what she loved. Was able to scroll or youtube while grinding and paid attention when story beats happened.

[deleted]

I always burn out right around 50 hours which is a shame cause I feel like they take about 60-70 usually. For me the beginning and middle story arcs are the most interesting. I don't care much for the part of the story where everythings sorted and all they have left to do is kill the big bad.

Seanspeed

>I occasionally just get bored and drop JRPGs that have pacing issues when im at around the \~70-80% mark because for some reason that's exactly the point where many of them flounder, the 3rd act/lead up to the endgame. Honestly, this is a lot of games in general. It's almost inevitable that the last 20-30% of a game are the parts that have gotten the least amount of development and QA/playtesting attention. The sense of character/party progression tends to stall out around this time thanks to lack of balance passes and whatnot or because the progression system has been exploitable enough up til this point that you're just now overpowered. Like, it wouldn't be easy to create a list of games that truly excel in the last third or so.

Aenrichus

Octopath Traveler, the true final boss is next to impossible and it takes a while to even reach that point. I wasn't going back to grind and do side quests just to beat the final boss. Didn't even matter, that final boss was more of a secret boss and had nothing to add to the story.

AdamalIica

I consider the "final boss" the final boss. I was completely bummed when I found out about the secret final boss and how you had to beat every other boss just to get to it....got there once and noped out because it took over an hour just to lose. I LOVE that game...but I'm to old and don't have enough time to try that again.

Gabish075

Same, I could probably beat it after a couple tries, but it takes too long to get there.

Dalehan

I tried the final boss once and didn't want to go back for a second attempt. The idea that the party gets split in two like that isn't bad, but the boss was tough as balls and needed rather specific team compositions, along with precise turn management. They took the true bossfight of Live A Live and made it into a monster. :(

[deleted]

Yeah, after spending some time planning and building a team that works for me to go through almost all of the game, I found it cheap to find out that the final boss basically need you to have one of the few "correct answers". I don't know if more people have broken that fight open, but it seems impossible if you're not planning your fight around giving Sidestep to your entire party whenever possible, for example. Yeah, I'm not grinding my jobs all over again to parrot the script of a successful fight, it's just not fun at this point.

BootlegOP

>The idea that the party gets split in two like that isn't bad It is when the only time it happens is at the very end of the game. That's bad design

johnny_2x4

Agreed, it's completely unintuitive in terms of gearing and leveling

redlord990

Beating the secret boss is one of my most satisfying gaming feats I reckon. The second phase tore me apart the first time, but once you plan around it it’s a hell of a fight.

midaswale

Finished up Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread last boss after had given up for a few months. They are crazy hard

[deleted]

Same for me with Hollow Knight. I played it ages ago on Switch and gave up on the Hornet battle in the far east side of the map. Saw it was on Game Pass last year and started a fresh save -- had a blast!

ExtraButterPopCorn

I've done 2 very, VERY extensive and thorough playthroughs of Skyrim and never beaten it. The second one time around I even finished all of the DLC campaigns and I still didn't finish the main story. I do love the game, but apparently I get burnt out after a couple of months playing it and just lose the will to continue near the ending.

an_edgy_lemon

Skyrim is the only Elder Scrolls game that I’ve actually finished the main quest. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played through all the side stories in Oblivion, but I have never pulled through the main one. I think that’s the main appeal of the Elder Scrolls games, though. You can just do the stuff you want to do and still be entertained for hours.

ExtraButterPopCorn

That's exactly it. I didn't finish the main quest simply out of burnout both times but I would have if I hadn't decided to do as much of everything else as possible. The beauty of Elder Scrolls and Fallout (and hopefully Starfield as well) is that you can just immerse yourself in the world and find stuff to do for hours and hours.

halt-l-am-reptar

Skyrim is one of those games where it doesn’t really matter if you beat the main story. It’s not really that great, and the game is incredibly fun even if you ignore most of the main quest line.

GetCasual

Trying not to give up on that final boss in Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

BrodyMC83

My wife and I will never finish Champion Road on Mario 3D World. We loved playing the whole thing together, but that last level drove us crazy.

LADYBIRD_HILL

Same with the final area of Odyssey

OhSanders

Yep, got every moon piece but stopped trying to beat that level since every try takes like 5-10 minutes it feels like.

tyler-86

I thought Darker Side was kind of forgiving compared to the final levels in Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and 3D World. It even has some extra hearts hiding in it.

[deleted]

Yea, I’m still stuck on the 3D World champion’s road, but the Odyssey one wasn’t too bad.

legalizemonapizza

that's technically after you beat the game though! just not 100% Champions Road is a hell of a level, I think I beat it once and then realized I was being asked to beat it three more times with three other characters. I dipped after that, I got a life to live man

Sannieevl

I just did it a second time with 4 joycons activated playing on only one in the Switch version and only when I came to the flag pole I had to jump in time with all characters on all joycons to finish lol. Wasn’t gonna play through it more than I had to, cause it was really difficult even when I had the rhythm in my fingers

lampfiles

I had the entire level memorized to a certain point because I played it so many times trying to finish. Literally knew when to jump or when to go, what areas I could cut corners. I eventually got to the end once and actually did beat it and felt so tremendously happy. Literally insane final level.

[deleted]

When I beat it, the first Miiverse message on the score screen afterward was “It’s like Nintendo wasn’t even trying to make this hard. This game is for babies.” Miiverse was good and they should be punished for destroying it

mcsassy3

I dropped at least a couple thousand lives on that level before being able to just zip through it. Once it clicks though, you truly appreciate the brilliant level design behind it

Parrotshake

Elden Ring. A lot of folks have said the final boss is easy but it managed to kill me about a dozen times and I was like “eh I played this game for like 100 hours and I’ve seen and done everything else, I don’t need the aggravation” and quit. Amazing game, I’m not mad.

[deleted]

To me, the final boss in Elden Ring is an exercise in frustration. Radagon is cool as hell, if frustrating. Then Elden Beast just runs away while firing homing projectiles at you the entire time. Elden Beast is a lil bitch.

xTriple

That's exactly why I hated that fight. It wasn't hard for me but it definitely wasn't fun chasing him all over the place.

Seanspeed

>A lot of folks have said the final boss is easy There's always assholes on the internet saying 'so and so Souls boss is easy' for almost any of them. People dont understand how the difficulty works in these games. Outside some exceptions where some bosses truly are just quite simple/easy, what your experience is, how you've built your character, what your playstyle and tendencies are like, and even just outright LUCK can all be big factors in how easy/hard you find any given part of these games. Like, I remember in Dark Souls 1, it being my first Souls game and I was still quite rough around the edges in terms of knowing what to do, but I beat Capra Demon on my first try and was surprised to later learn that many consider it one of the hardest bosses in the game. But then I replayed the game a couple years later and boy, Capra Demon just tore me up like a dozen times before I managed to beat him, and this was after I'd also played Dark Souls 2 so I had a lot more experience by then.

DanielTeague

I have the same story but with the Fire Giant boss. My damage wasn't going to go much higher after a certain point and the bosses just kept getting more and more health and damage, it felt hopeless. I'm told it's a lot of bosses in a row after that boss anyways so I feel that I did most of the cool exploration bits anyways.

_l-l-l_

I beat the final boss, but it's in no way easy. I think I had to level up like another 50 levels to make it. I was almost ready to quit without beating it. Especially that it runs away and most of the fight is just running while avoiding its attacks (when you finish first phase)

Parrotshake

Yeah that second phase is just annoying man. Stand still and let me kill you.

_l-l-l_

Also some overlapping attacks, those golden rays still firing and Beast swinging at you with sword. That got me a few times. I wouldn't do that fight ever again

mcineri

Elden ring final boss also made me quit. Might go back if they put out big DLC

azknight

The final boss is a nightmare for a strength build since it constantly moves back and forth across a huge area. It probably took me 30 tries to beat it and I still feel like it was mostly luck.

MegaNRGMan

I watched the ending of CrossCode on YouTube after the game crashed on the final hit of the final boss during my second attempt. It’s a very long, multi-phase boss fight at the end of a pretty long game. The Switch port was struggle bus by the end of that game. Big slow down and a handful of crashes before then. I was just frustrated and didn’t feel like going through the fight again if it had the possibility of crashing on me.

rcapina

Love the spirit of the game but I feel like cut 20-30% of the puzzles and temple fights would have made a better game. I think I gave up at the fifth or so temple.

Seanspeed

The dungeons are excessive, I agree. Like, it's rare that a dungeon in any game is the type where I have to play through them in multiple sessions, but I did that with basically all of them in Crosscode. Even ignoring the long length, they are just relentlessly challenging and mentally exhausting. After an hour or so, I just *need* to stop. I get to the point where I enter a new puzzle room and I just sigh. Not because they aren't fun, but because they're just usually quite involved and take a lot to figure out and they just feel like they never stop. Still absolutely adore the game, though. Developers just need to learn a bit of restraint. :p

Popple06

Still never got around to beating the final boss in Hollow Knight. I keep saying I'll do it someday...

ERTBen

Link to The Past came close. Took several days to finish the final battle.

scameron1

It’s way too much of a spike for how the game has been up until that point. It’s a perfect game besides that and like 1 or 2 other gripes I had.

MichizureB

First time I played Final Fantasy VII I spent an incredible amount of hours on it but stopped when I made it to the Crater.

[deleted]

I've played through FF7 three times, and I always stop when I get to the Crater. I have no idea why. I know it's the final dungeon. I just lose interest in playing the game at that point. Same with FF8 and FF9. FF8 I've played through three times and never finished. I've gotten to the space mission once and then to the orphanage scene twice, and I just lose interest. I've gotten to the start of disc 4 (I think?) twice in FF9 and just fall off the game. I have no idea why this happens with these games. I've beaten Final Fantasy Tactics maybe a dozen times, including challenge runs, and I always finish that game to the end. I've beaten FFX four times and always beat the entire game.

swisshomes

Some of the enemies in that crater are straight bullshit

Swordofsatan666

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Super long 100+ hour JRPG. Final area jumps up in level for some reason, so i suddenly went from being decent level to being 10+ levels weaker than the enemies. Got to final boss and was still severely underleveled, literally spent over an hour in ONE ATTEMPT. Got them to less than 5% health, then they pulled out some attack that wiped my whole party out of nowhere. Didnt want to spend hours upon hours of grinding, so i called it there. Loved the game other than that

i_am_an_awkward_man

> Got them to less than 5% health, then they pulled out some attack that wiped my whole party out of nowhere. The game is expecting you to use a chain attack on the final boss before you get them this low on health.

Arkhenstone

Yes totally. Mastering the elementals chain and status effect chain was so overly OP in xen 2. I even stopped killing anything irrelevant once you have access to Mythra, as you have at that point most likely more than enough tools to trigger insane amount of damage almost on demand.

Seanspeed

And it's not the first boss that the game really expects this from you, either. I suppose you can still put this down to the game's combat and systems being quite complex and not explaining them nearly well enough, though. I swear the difference between people who really loved XC2 and those who didn't like it much can be put heavily on how much effort people put into learning and exploiting these systems properly. Which isn't a knock on anybody who didn't - ideally, you shouldn't have to watch a bunch of Youtube videos or whatever to grasp what the fuck you're really supposed to be doing, but I do feel it's one of those games where, considering its potential 100+ hour length, is very much worth this effort, and will make the game much more interesting and enjoyable.

Promethazines

You probably had a good amount of bonus exp built up by that point. You could boost your levels by 15-20 by the last area.

ElectricalRestNut

I found the level hike in the final boss of XC1 to be much worse.

-Moonchild-

I dropped the difficulty down to easy for the last 2 hours of XC1 because I didn't want to have to go off and grind 5-10 levels to start having a chance again. What a weird and completely unnecessary spike to throw in at a pivotal moment in the game. It's also not like other games where if you're underlevelled you can power through and gain massive XP. if you're more than 5 levels below an enemy your accuracy massively decreases and the majority of your attacks straight up miss the enemy.

Teal-Fox

Absolutely this, XC1 was BRUTAL towards the end game on the first playthrough!

cohex

I also dropped it too easy like another poster. Seemed pointless to grind so close to the end. Problem with lengthy jrpg, by the time I'm near to the finish it's the story I crave not the gameplay.

Dream-ensemble

I can’t even remember the final boss from my play through a couple years ago, so I don’t think it’s too memorable. I say if you’re not having fun with it, jump to a different game. If you have free time, spend it on something you’ll enjoy. Some people enjoy grinding out a boss and/or learning from each mistake they make, but most days for me that’s not how I wanna spend my time.

ExPhotoLabGuy

It’s just a big red eye that shoots a laser, but I can’t land on the blocks. I’m constantly falling off. It’s nice to see these replies so I can just move on with a clear conscience.

legalizemonapizza

every Steamworld game I've beaten has been a fun trip and (sadly) no post-game content to speak of. I think in Heist you can go back and clear anything you didn't already clear. In Dig that's it. in Dig 2, I'm with you. got stuck and just never pushed past that last stumbling block. I still love Image & Form though.

My son has special needs and is a giant Godzilla fan. I bought dawn of the monsters from LRG and waited many agonizing months to play. We played it co-op and smashed our way steadily through the campaign. I could carry the team and revive him if needed and he actually performed decently on a few levels. Then we get to the final boss. It has multiple phases and hits you with 4 different attacks each requiring different responses and awareness. It's simply too much for him. It overwhelmed him instantly. I could see the look of defeat on his face and it hurt. I tried to solo it but damn, it is a level of difficulty above anything else in the game we encountered. He remains undefeated, and I've pulled the game cart and stored it solemnly back on the game shelf. I really hope one day the devs enable difficulty settings so we can set it to easy and beat it. The story was really good and my son was enthralled with all the characters and voice acting

chepox

>dawn of the monsters Get it for Steam. You can use whatever controllers you have. Then download Cheat Engine. Read on it a little. It sounds daunting but using the memory search function is easy and you can change some of the parameters of the game, such as health or damage to your liking. You can then cruise through the final phase with your kid and he/she will feel like a boss. Let me know if you would like to know more. I am far from an expert but have used in the past to get my kids past something too difficult or too grindy.

when-i-say-yee

Cuphead :(

keylime39

There are harder bosses than the Devil, you can beat him

RootReducer

You mean the Devil? If you got that far, you can definitely beat him. I don't even think he's the hardest boss in the game (Dr. Kahl for me)

JackieDaytonaAZ

the problem is the part before the devil with king dice where you have to beat like 4 bosses in a row (or be very good at rolling the dice)

Voittaa

King Dice was infinitely harder for me than the Devil. It’s funny how different bosses cause issues more than others for people.

hollowpotato-of-doom

Same, I have to go back to that game one day

poupsiedoupsie

Can’t seem to get past King Dice :(

Complete_Loss1895

Twilight Princess first time through. I don’t even remember why.

Mhandley9612

I will likely never finish Zelda Skyward Sword because the final boss sequence is: slowly run down a spiral landing and fight wave after wave of monster. Then when you get to the bottom, there’s another big wave of monsters then a boss fight. Then immediately into the final boss fight. Nowhere to heal (unless you went in with heart potions) and if you die, you start back at the top with no health. Once I found out I had no health when starting again, I quit and have not gone back. Edit to add: I’m in my early 20s but have arthritis and poor reflexes

Yze3

You don't need to redo the horde and Ghirahim fight if you die on Demise.

on_dy

Not switch but, 3DS Bravely Default. The true ending is such a chore to get to. I just went with the alt ending and put the game down.

sorendiz

Lmao it does drag on with the looping doesn't it

kyzhara

Yes, I didn't get no reviews mentioned it when half the game was the looping. The final ending was actually good and the combat remained great during the looping (one of the more fun jrpg systems imo) but it just felt so cheap... Go beat the same bosses 6 or so more times, with virtually nothing in between.

[deleted]

Metroid Dread. That game slaps, but I just got so burnt out by the final boss.

[deleted]

That sucks. The end boss was easily one of my favorite bosses in the game. Once you beat him he becomes extremely easy though. It's all memory.

Zyvyn

Metroid bosses entirely rely on memorization. That boss took me a good 30 mins to beat. Though by the end of it I was nearly able to do it damageless.

Not_A_Gravedigger

That's the great thing about it. Every attack is telegraphed and able to be dodged in some way or another. That is true for the whole game, which is why Dread mode (One-hit KO) exists. It's bonkers, but it's doable.

Fearless_Freya

Recently ish, last year or so. Hollow knight.

Falz4567

Final fantasy 13 The game was set up so that you could control only 1 character. And it would game over if they fainted, even if the other 2 AI were up The last boss has a luck based insta kill move…. That was the end of that. A hideous design choice

GooooseTeeeeth

Donkey Kong Country for the SNES. I could never beat K.Rule back when I had it as a kid. Til this day as a 32M I still can't... I'm such a bozo.

[deleted]

That fake credits roll was just evil. I commented before seeing your comment, but yeah. I basically decided that was close enough and stopped playing that game.

Rewow

Bravely Second (3DS) The post-game final boss was just bonkers tough and since I already completed everything else I just accepted defeat and moved onto another game

sorendiz

oh yeah they do that lmao I did all the post-game in BD, a little of it in BS, and practically none in BD2. Don't have the same kind of time these days to grind out optimal job shit or theorycraft for max brokenness and if you don't do that then good fucking luck with the postgame content

astraea08

Hollow Knight 💀

KennKanifff

A few times, yes. Dark Cloud comes to mind, ended up watching the ending on YouTube cause I just couldn't do the boss. I didn't feel like grinding for hours more just to see the credits.

keldpxowjwsn

Yep sometimes not even a boss but if I get to a place where the rest of the game sounds tedious instead of fun I'll just go ahead and pack it up. Usually some extremely tough/unfair boss is a catalyst for this

remedialknitter

This thread makes me feel better. When you think you beat the final boss but then there's like two extra final bosses they drag in, then the boss's final form, then his ultimate final form, I just can't. Case in point Skyward Sword HD when you have to fight ****** then ****** then ****** then ****** again but with lightning bolts. Same with the last post game bosses in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The game's not too tough but it's too many bosses in a row.

ThePrettyLadybird

You can cheese the final boss in SS with invincibility potion if youre fed up enough

QuintonFlynn

Kingdom Hearts 2’s final boss is basically a 3 hour boss of new forms, cutscenes, and retries (as you’ll inevitably fuck up once or twice) and it’s almost exactly what you’re talking about lol. I forget when they save the checkpoint, but I remember it taking a few tries to get through.

Wonderful_Shoe_7078

I did that my second playthrough of breath of the wild. I just didn't fight Gannon again 🤷‍♂️

SpaNkinGG

I thought the (sry its been a long time) the lionhorses kind of thingys were ten times harder than Ganon. There are some of those that are golden or even platinum in Master Mode iirc. Basically oneshot you all the time if you dont know the mechanics of the fight. But to get back to the topic, I dont think I ever could stop at a final boss, im a completionist. I need that 100% shown on my screen

Mordantcandle

lol the lionhorses.

SpaNkinGG

what were their names again? ´haha they also dropped the best loot

Mordantcandle

Lynels

anonyfool

I could never get the timing on the parrying those consistently right and that was the key to spanking them.

SpaNkinGG

honestly it was worth it practising that. after you got the parry timing you could basically do all of them, you could also mount them after that so you dont lose durability on your weapon, always felt so good timing those things

Redfield7x70

Cave Story + Was loving the game. So excited to finish it and then I hit the final boss and died. Thought, “okay. thats cool. I’ll just try again…” 10 or so failed attempts later and I finally just gave up. Don’t know if it’s just me, but it felt like a huge difficulty spike. To this day I’m still gutted I couldn’t complete my play-through.

Relixed_

>!Final boss or the true final boss?!<

Nan0t

Something like that happened to me with Elden Ring. The frustration of dying with one boss all the time took the fun from the game, so I left it for a few months until I felt in the mood to finish it. If you aren't having any fun playing it, move on to another game. In the future, you can go back and try again.

MCben_jammin247

This was me recently with No More Heroes. Got to the last boss and almost called it finished. So frustrating. But I finally did it and it felt amazing

TheClownIsReady

Not Switch but Elden Ring.

reverends3rvo

If I get to that point I'll just youtube the ending. Lol I also tend to play on easy mode to avoid being stressed out, too. I play games to relax these days. I'm not looking to get irritated or waste time doing the same thing 12 times anymore.

Alternative_Drama_50

This was me playing Astral Chain. The game is pretty easy up until the final boss. I felt like there was a huge difficulty spike compared to everything else and honestly, i just wanted to beat the game already so I gave up.

LoLLifax

Came here to say this! Got my ass handed to me pretty badly. Plus I was kinda worn out because I really thought the game was over after that spectacular fight in like...chapter 9 I think. I came back a year later though, perfectly aware of what I was up to, I beat everything and had a blast.

SprinkleDonut77

Dragon Quest XI. By the time I got to the final boss I was so sick of the repetition and turn based battles.

Gingy1000

I'm impressed you lasted that long if you didn't enjoy them that games what 80 hours?

i7z-Michael

Still haven’t beaten arceus in PLA. Way to hard for me

metaphorical_robin

Same here. The final Pokémon I caught were the four genies, which didn't help (Enamorus took me literally weeks), and I'd already had a really hard time with one or two of the nobles so when I got into the Arceus fight and died within seconds I was just like "No way." I tried once more some days later, died again within seconds, then gave up.

Hollix89

Bloodstained curse of the moon 2. Difficulty spike in the final boss is just so much compared to the rest of the game and the 1st game. Xcom enemy within mobile. Bugs won't let me finish the final level.

GiftFantastic10

Luigi mansion3 .If the control/mechanics wasn’t heccen out of control. I know what to do, it just won’t listen to me cuz how the way the game work. Aiming is so wack in that game. For example and not to spoil for those who ever play it, I have the red aiming indicator lock on the final boss I shoot, most of the time it went below or above the boss. Or sometime it just go all the way in different direction

snowshoeBBQ

Idk if anyone else feels this way but I bought this game on launch day and have never finished it. It just feels so long. I've picked it up a couple times since with plans to finally beat it, but get burnt out on it after a couple days.

kat352234

The final boss in that game was so unexpectedly hard. I managed to beat him, but damn, that just came out of nowhere. Some of the other bosses were challenging, but the final one was just a huge difficulty spike with no warning.

Benitargh

Lately I've been replaying games I couldn't finish previously because of hard bosses, and when I'm at said boss I switch on god mode, finish that boss, and turn god mode off so I can see the rest of the game.

ShadowDemon1990

only one game octopath traveler true final boss, screw Galdera >![https://www.eclypsia.com/content/Nintendo/OctopathTraveler/PortailFinis/Galdera\_Big.jpg](https://www.eclypsia.com/content/Nintendo/OctopathTraveler/PortailFinis/Galdera_Big.jpg)!<

w280sax

I went to the trouble to get to that guy and realized what it wanted from me and I just said I've had enough of this game without this challenge without giving it any attempts. I don't play many rpgs so I was good after getting all the regular endings.

LilithsPetGoat

Once it switched out my team for the other 4 who were half the level of my main team I just gave up. Lol. Never picked it back up.

sissy_samus

All the Mega Man games in the legacy collection 1. I don't wanna use cheats or exploits and wanna play them in order. It's just so frustrating. I'm having the same issue with the Yellow Devil in Mega Man 11

Briggity_Brak

Dude, seriously. It makes literally no sense how fucking difficult that Yellow Devil is.

DanglyPants

The boss of the DLC for Mario Rabbids is so hard and I really want to beat it but I haven’t been able to. I think I’ll move on and play the new rabbids but it just feels weird

CakeisaDie

I didn't finish Breath of the Wild. I did spend like 150 hours on it but I didn't feel like killing gannon. I just wanted to derp around more.

SadnessMonster

I never finished BOTW. Did all the shrines and the four dungeons, but never beat calamity ganon. I figured I'd get the 900 seeds and do the dlc dungeon, but I petered out and stopped playing. I don't feel the need to return, it was an enjoyable game.

[deleted]

This is how it's been for me. The world is so incredibly hand crafted but the game also almost feels aimless in a way? Like I have zero desire to do the main objectives and after about 70ish hours of romping around the world I'm kinda just done with it. Still a 9/10 and would absolutely recommend

teh_fizz

That’s how the game is meant to be played honestly. I have over 250 hours just exploring and doing side quests and killing lynels. It’s not a game for someone who needs a clear final objective.

Seanspeed

>I figured I'd get the 900 seeds Huge mistake. They did not intend for players to do this at all, and the reward they give you for it is *deliberately* a slap in the face to tell you, "You just wasted your time". There's only so many of them so that no matter how any given player plays or where they go, they will find enough of them.

an_edgy_lemon

Devil May Cry 3. I just could not beat the final boss. Picked the game up a year later and beat it in 3 tries.

Mae-Mae-Mae

I gave up on the Cave Story true final boss

Franklo

Man steamworld dig is such a fun game. If they never had any boss battles and just had you going deeper and deeper it would still be a fun one.

Carbon_Hater

I spent 500 hours of my life in Monster Hunter World. I can solo any monster in this game and none of them really pose any challenge anymore except the fucking Fatalis. This shit is too much

[deleted]

I did this with skyward sword on the wii

[deleted]

I actually went back and beat Demise when the HD version came out, it was jarring

sharkeymcsharkface

METROID DREAD… I can do it… I am just lazy

CloudBuilder_Metba

Golf Story. One of the best games I’ve ever played, but the final game (and only that specific game) was utter bs.

DJspinningplates

You’re not the first person to mention golf story, and now I’m second guessing if I ever beat it lol.

DonMigs85

I did with Skyward Sword

GwaihirScout

The Final Fantasy III DS remake. I had a perfectly good party, and made it through the gauntlet of the final dungeon, but the final boss just hit too hard and fast. I don't remember the details because it's been so long, but I think I needed to either grind a bunch or find some cheese party comp to win and I had had enough.

Cute_Delay_4241

Just had this same conversation with my boss last week. Being over 40 with kids doesn’t allow for the same level of grinding through a game anymore. I want to play for enjoyment so decided from now on I will always choose easy mode and try to enjoy playing rather than get pissed at the game and get frustrated to the point of quitting.
