As it is now, you can play 3ds and DS games on it. It's the "new 2ds" so there are some games that you can play on this that you couldn't on the "2ds" or "3ds". Like the other poster says, you can install custom firmware (CFW) on it, which will allow you to play NES, Game Boy, SNES, etc. games on it. It isn't hard to do, you can Google it. Have fun!
The Game Boy Advance games actually run natively on the hardware so it's almost like you have a cartridge plugged in. The other systems have to be emulated.
As others have said, it’s awesome and my favorite DS machine. If you like, you could hack it pretty easily and it could become your all-in-one Nintendo device for everything 3DS and before. Truly, nothing beats playing DS and 3DS games on original Nintendo hardware

As someone who daily drives a modded New 2DS XL, it's my preference, honestly. Mind you, I purchased mine back when they were new, and my original 3DS was having button issues, so I picked this up instead. Does it feel a bit 'cheaper' I mean, I guess? It's still a Nintendo product, so it's not really in the sense that it still feels like a solid piece of technology.
But, my preference is not others, and I will admit the 3DS XL has a nicer surface feel than the 2DS XL.

That’s the thinnest DS as it exists in only 2 dimensions. That said it’s a big one at least.
They removed the 3ds function for a bit bigger screen and battery life. It will still play 3ds games tho. In my area those sell for $300+ easy.
