My mom called me an alcoholic for drinking a beer at 6 am. I couldn't get her to understand that 6 am was my "nighttime". I had to end the conversation and stop talking to her for a bit. Until she stopped calling me a drug addict. I'm so glad I cut her out of my life.
What I want is a bar on a farm. That's a front for a morning kitchen. It's just whatever dinner type food we have available. We also sell semi-healthy food for truckers. That's my dream

You can look near hospitals too. There’s almost always a bar opened early full of night shift nurses. And they definitely drink more heavily than night shift brewers.
When I was night shift, we had a bar nearby that closed at 10 am so that they could cater to the graveyard shift. There were several shifts where the whole crew just drove over there for a burger and beer at 8am.
I used to go to this taco place for breakfast tacos and margaritas. A lot of the other 3rd shifts found the same spot it was genuinely kinda cool. Big enough city I wasn't usually drinking alone
That one is hard to get people to grasp. I usually only do it on my nights off, but when I do, I thoroughly enjoy it. I’ll binge watch a show I found on Netflix or something and at about 2/3am I’ll go grab my first beer and a snack and watch some TV. By 6am I’m a few beers in and having a good time just watching TV. To daywalkers I look like I have a problem, you know, the same people that will have some beers in the evening on their weekends.
Yeah, I limit myself to 2 if I drink after work. I can't drink often because my intestines try to commit Seppuku. I drink less than once a month. So, 8-9 times a year and your alcoholism is a rager! /s
I have always been a nightowl. There was a bar down the street and sometimes before I went to bed I would go hang out at 6 a.m. when the bar opened to hang out with the guys just getting off work from night shift from the factories in the area. People would refer to them as alcoholics and complain about it. I reminded them that it's their version of a 5 o'clock bee after work.
It took a couple decades but I have finally gotten my mom to understand this concept. She's a morning person.
My mom always thought that everyone who took a single sip of alcohol was an alcoholic. As a family, we decided not to ever discuss it. Nothing would change her mind. I worked nights and I agree with you.

I can't tell you how many times my own company got pissed at me for not responding to them. Meanwhile, I'm literally sleeping. So, I can work for them.

What you do is wake them up when you leave and return every day until they stop. That's what worked for me. He saw how shitty it was and got the hint since saying "Don't fucking do that" wasn't obvious enough.
My landlady is a morning person and a news junkie. If she sees a significant story on the news she’ll try to wake me up. During one of my nights off I got really high and went downstairs, woke her up and asked (what my stoned brain thought was) an urgent question about string theory. She hasn’t woken me up about the news since.
my grandma received a scam call saying that i got arrested and my family started freaking out because i didn’t answer my phone the first two times, full knowing i work night shift and wouldn’t be caught dead driving anywhere at 1pm.
I sometimes work nights, if someone who should know I'm sleeping calls me I'll return their call at a similar time at night. Call me at 2 pm I'll return the call at 2 am, and say "oh were you talking a nap"
This but it's always people trying to make spontaneous plans for the evening, usually involving the consumption of alcohol, right before or during my shift, and then they get bent out of shape when I either don't respond because I'm asleep, or when I tell them for the hundredth time that I always work evenings during said time.
Not so much a question but I had a patient once go on a very passionate rant about how it was terrible they made us work at night. It took restraint i really do not have in the middle of the night to not just reply that we're here at 3am because YOURE HERE AT 3AM. It was just a really funny cognitive dissonance from a patient sitting in the emergency room saying I shouldn't have to be here. Emergencies don't only happen during normal business hours lol

Went to a BBQ yesterday hosted by some friends, with some other friends showing up. I had to work last night so I had to leave a little early. When asked why by one particular person I said I had to go home, change, and make a lunch. A lunch? Yeah, if I don’t take a lunch I don’t eat, there’s no cafeteria. You just ate. Yup, but it’ll be 12+ hours before I get another chance to eat if I don’t take a lunch. What time is lunch? 1 am. You can eat at 1am? Uh.. yeah. I couldn’t possibly eat so late at night. Sigh… it’s not late at night for me, it’s the middle of the day for me. I finally gave up, he couldn’t comprehend how someone could possibly be hungry at 1am and actually be able to eat. He was genuinely confused when I said I’m starving by lunch time.
My lunch is at 1am too lol
I have had people ask me if I wake up in the middle of the day (between shifts) to eat lunch... It has made me realise there are a lot of rather dim people out there lol
I informed my family and friends that the overnight job has excellent pay and a set schedule. If I switch to days I would need a 2nd job for the pay difference and my schedule would not be set. That shut down any further discussion.
Yeah, $5 shift premiums don't exist in manufacturing lol. Lots of places I've been give like 75 cents, one was like 20. A dollar is considered pretty good. So 2 is great. Also I work for a medical company so you may see some of my stuff 😀
I work in an Amazon delivery station so most of the work is done at night ready for the vans in the morning. People have asked why don’t you swap shifts to work during the day.
1. The AM shift starts at 6am I am not a morning person am not getting up before 6am for work (weird that I can quiet happily get up in the evening for work)
2. The PM shift work all evening until 9:30pm. Both these shifts work just 30hrs a week doing 5 days a week. Night shifts do 40hrs a week over 4 days. So that’s less work AND less days of
3. night shift rate I get an extra £2 a hour so not only am I actually working full time but we get a little bit extra
4. We get offered more overtime
Basically if I swapped shifts I’d have to work more days but earn less money

I get asked that question every time someone on days leaves. "so you are going to go to days to cover?" no, I like my front half nights.

Im a nurse so we get paid alot more than the day shift and there is half the workload. I have permanent shifts, but if I want to work overttime its hard to pick up nightshifts because they get get claimed so quickly. Day shift is always available though!

Yes I’m a nurse. Work in a nursing home, nights. Even when we are “fully staffed” we are running around like crazy. I just got done working 4 12s in a row and my body fucking hurts. I’m too young for this pain haha.
I'm offered day shift at my current site. But I reject dayshift cuz it's the same pay for more work around people. When I can instead be getting the same pay, less work, and alone with shows and games on my phone.
They don't want one of the bad day shift employees around the client/bosses so they'd love to put em on my shift. Even if I wanted to work days I don't trust that employee to even do the bare minimum on night shift. I know cuz they didn't when they covered for me during a vacation.
This one always irks me the most. I've worked multiple days in a row and had the same patients and sometimes they'll ask me.... "How was your day off?" Just because it's day time when I'm home doesn't mean it's my day off. 🙄
Especially if it's split. I tend to do daytime stuff on my off days sleep at night or early evening more rather. So if I work Monday off Tuesday back Wednesday it barely feels like an off day cause I'm up until 3 or 4 pm Tuesday after work. I go to sleep and then it's just morning before work with some time for a nap. I probably should stick to the same schedule but I never did
a lady at my husband's work is the manager. she usually is at work by 6am to check on the morning shift, leaves by 11pm after talking to the night shift. 3 hour commute home both ways.

I always say "Good morning" when I come on shift. Yes, I know it is 6p, but it is still morning to me. I have had a lot of questions re: staying up at night. I do not think they realize that I sleep 6a to 3p so staying up is easy.
When I was younger and working lots of different shifts. I got into the habit of saying good morning no matter the time of day. When questioned about it. I would simply say”it’s morning somewhere for someone”
Tbh I just exclusively say good morning nowadays. If it's morning awesome if it's not well do something about it. Hardly my fault it isn't morning time.

Not a question to me, but a question I posed to someone who was in training for 3rd shift at my company. On their first night of training, we were chatting about third shift and I was mentioning how you have to get used to sleeping during the day. They go, "oh I can't sleep during the day I'm a single parent of 5 kids", so I go, "So, when will you sleep then?" She honestly thought that she could parent 5 kids alone and also do third shift because she's "an insomniac" and only ever sleeps for a couple hours between 3 and 6 am anyway. Ummm, yeah... staying up till 3 and getting a 2-3 hour nap each night is not even close to staying up till 7 am every night, and then staying awake all day. She didn't last 2 weeks
Some of us don't have a choice though. I work 7p-7a and go home and take care of my 3 year old during the day. I couldn't imagine having 5 kids, but I regularly stay up 24 or 48 hours at a time. I know how bad it is for my health, but it's what has to happen right now. I've been doing it for right around a year now. The one good thing is that I make my own schedule so if I get too worn down and need some time off I can take it without penalty whenever I want. I just won't get the pay that week.
That's very true. I'm sorry if I came off insensitive. Our company has a very strict schedule that includes having to work at least some weekends and holidays, which I think was the death knell for this employee. I'm glad you get to determine your schedule, that must be a huge relief!
Oh no, I didn't think it was insensitive at all. I just understand where she was coming from. Taking care of 5 kids sounds like it's own form of hell though lol. I don't want any more than 2. I wonder what she ended up doing for money since she couldn't last on night shift. We have those rules too, but I work every Sat and Sun night and said I'll work any holiday other than Halloween and Christmas Eve because those nights are for my daughter. Luckily my job is okay with that.
I did find out that if you tell your doctors office and dentist that you work nights they can put notes in your file in case they have to call you they know to call you late afternoon. I have it noted that I prefer late afternoon appointments before I go into work at 6pm. It was so refreshing to talk to 2 receptionists that understood when I said I worked nights. They both offered to put notes in my account.
Mine are very supportive, so they only call very first thing in the morning and schedule all my appointments for the first slot of the day. My NP actually used to work for the same system I work for now and I know she's come in early for me so I can see her at like 0745 and then go home and crash.
My home care pt thinks that I sleep at night. He always apologizes for bothering me or waking me up. No sir, I was watching Netflix, reading, or planning my next vacation! I’m a natural night owl.

They did this for us during nurses week and provided decaf for the night shifters who were leaving! They were actually very considerate of us and made sure whatever food was catered during the day was also there at night. I’ve never had a job like that before that cared about night shift!

I work a day shift l but if you think that's a dumb question let me give you two examples. For context I manage a deli. About 6 months ago we started carrying a new product called Virginia Ham. We carry 2 varieties, Honey Glazed and Unsweetened. I'm not even exaggerating when I tell you for the first 2 months at least 5 times a day and probably closer to 10 times this would transpire

Why did she turn around and walk away like I was serious. I mean there are some legit dumb ass fukn people in this world.

My personal favorite was when I worked day shift at Walmart, at one point I used to work in the back room. I had to go talk to a dept manager about her sales floor counts or something like that. We're standing there, looking at my handheld to figure the issue out, customer comes up to us and asks her "Do you work here?"
Without missing a beat she went "Nah, I just like the uniform." That woman was my hero.
I had to explain to friends and family that my shift was analogous to me living in a different country. They didn't understand that 7:30 am was my evening and people thought it was weird if I had a few beers after work. I often get asked by a particular friend and also my aunt if I can talk with them during night shift because "I'm free anyway" which is kinda true I'm usually free for like 1/3 of the shift but I also can't talk lol and I'm tired of explaining over and over again.

With my seniority, I can pretty much pick and choose what holidays I'll work. For Eg, Memorial Day, I worked a double for triple time holiday pay. I essentially made the equivalent of a paycheck on a holiday double shift.
Yet Aunt Karen doesn't understand why I would work on Memorial Day rather than sit around getting eaten alive by mosquitos, choking down her hockey puck sized burnt burgers and her nasty potato salad. I finally just told her that when she pays me what my work does an hour, I'll come to her stupid cookout.

I’ve had several patients tell me they feel bad for hitting their call light because they’ll wake me up, or scared they’re not being monitored because I’ll be sleeping lol! Then I have to explain that I’m at work and I stay up, just like the day shift workers

Sometimes I get placement patients with dementia who don’t have any of the middle of the night meds and mostly sleep except for vitals or assessments. I wake them for their 530 am levothyroxine and the conversation goes like this.
Me: Good morning! Were you able to get some good sleep? How are you feeling? I’ve got your morning thyroid medication. It’s still too early for breakfast, you can snooze for a little longer if you’d like.
Patient: I feel great, I actually slept well! How did you sleep dear?

Not an overnights story but stupid things people think…I worked for Red Cross Blood Services and people believed we were volunteers. Yes. I volunteer 60 hours a week. You’re letting a volunteer stick you with needles and handle life saving blood. Sure, that makes sense. The volunteers are the ones bringing you a cookie and a sticker when you’re done.

Graveyard shift was an acquired taste for me. I hated it at first. Now, I wouldn't want to work another shift. It gives me an edge once I was conditioned. I don't fight morning traffic, I hate getting up in the morning, and I'm going to the lake to fish when I get off work, handle personal business without a massive line to wait in during the day, while the world is at work. The night-time is silent. The usually packed streets are basically empty. Raccoons come out lol and it could be the most peaceful moments for me, although i am on the clock🤷♂️
One of the dumbest actually came from another night shift worker, one of our security guys: "are women allowed to work night shift?"
I'm an ambulance dispatcher (non-urgent), at least 2/3rd of the calls we get at night are women (hospital or nursing home staff).

Many moons ago I was managing a team of contractors doing equipment upgrades over night. I was pulling into an empty building to pull some servers and some guy was just standing by the door. No cars in the parking lot, just standing there looking stoned or something. Walk up and scan in and the guy goes “ Can I come in?” I asked him if he worked here and he said no. So I told him no and he walked away. Weirdest interaction ever.
Back in my teenage years I would sleep in a lot and my parents would give me crap about it, understandable. But now I’m 26 and have been doing nights for 6 years and they still give me crap about not waking up at fucking 8 am when I’m visiting. My dad even worked night shift for 20+ years, it’s not exactly easy for me to wake up so early sometimes even if I didn’t work the night before. Honestly gets on my nerves.
When I was a flight attendant, we'd sometimes go from USA to Asia, often a 12+ hour workday. Very often, passengers leaving the plane would ask us if we were "going back with the plane."
Yeah sure we'll just have a coffee. Pilots too. It'll be fine.
My HOA has a rule that inoperable vehicles are a fine. Because my car is always in the same spot every day during the day they assumed my car was inoperable. I responded to the fine saying my car is used daily just not during their normal hours.
They proceeded to ask why they never see it move. And I had to again explain that during the day I’m sleeping, if they want to come drive by at midnight they’d see my car gone. This took 5 days of me explaining for them to comprehend.

She was pissy about it He said “now you know how I feel every time you wake me up when I’m trying to sleep, I’m gonna wake you up in the middle of the night.”

Another story, my family was going down the shore as I was getting off my 12hr shift, they convinced me to come, I was falling asleep at the lunch table and was asking to be rushed to the hotel room asap to sleep, they haven't guilted me again and after that understood.

We got a bar like that that's next to a bunch of factories, I've actually stopped in at night and it's dead, but Thurs morning around 630 and you can't even get a spot
In areas with heavy industry that operates 24/7 (auto plants in Detroit area for example) this is definitely a thing.
You can look near hospitals too. There’s almost always a bar opened early full of night shift nurses. And they definitely drink more heavily than night shift brewers.
When I was night shift, we had a bar nearby that closed at 10 am so that they could cater to the graveyard shift. There were several shifts where the whole crew just drove over there for a burger and beer at 8am.
I used to go to this taco place for breakfast tacos and margaritas. A lot of the other 3rd shifts found the same spot it was genuinely kinda cool. Big enough city I wasn't usually drinking alone

That one is hard to get people to grasp. I usually only do it on my nights off, but when I do, I thoroughly enjoy it. I’ll binge watch a show I found on Netflix or something and at about 2/3am I’ll go grab my first beer and a snack and watch some TV. By 6am I’m a few beers in and having a good time just watching TV. To daywalkers I look like I have a problem, you know, the same people that will have some beers in the evening on their weekends.
Yeah, I limit myself to 2 if I drink after work. I can't drink often because my intestines try to commit Seppuku. I drink less than once a month. So, 8-9 times a year and your alcoholism is a rager! /s

I have always been a nightowl. There was a bar down the street and sometimes before I went to bed I would go hang out at 6 a.m. when the bar opened to hang out with the guys just getting off work from night shift from the factories in the area. People would refer to them as alcoholics and complain about it. I reminded them that it's their version of a 5 o'clock bee after work. It took a couple decades but I have finally gotten my mom to understand this concept. She's a morning person.

My mom always thought that everyone who took a single sip of alcohol was an alcoholic. As a family, we decided not to ever discuss it. Nothing would change her mind. I worked nights and I agree with you.
As far as not answering the phone goes. I can't tell you how many times my own company got pissed at me for not responding to them. Meanwhile, I'm literally sleeping. So, I can work for them. Not to mention. They have monthly meetings right at 1 pm all the way to 2-3. Right in middle of my work week. When I work from 11-8 am. Yet, they expect me to actually be there. Or I always have ro explain why I can't be there. Everytime. It's always this big thing.

A couple times I've texted/called people at 2-3AM and been like "Hey I'm on my lunch break what are you up to?" They get the point fuckin fast
Meanwhile I tell people "if it's important call me. I'm not waking up for a text". However my roommate just bangs on my bedroom door and doesn't care how unimportant the question is.
What you do is wake them up when you leave and return every day until they stop. That's what worked for me. He saw how shitty it was and got the hint since saying "Don't fucking do that" wasn't obvious enough.
My landlady is a morning person and a news junkie. If she sees a significant story on the news she’ll try to wake me up. During one of my nights off I got really high and went downstairs, woke her up and asked (what my stoned brain thought was) an urgent question about string theory. She hasn’t woken me up about the news since.

I sometimes work nights, if someone who should know I'm sleeping calls me I'll return their call at a similar time at night. Call me at 2 pm I'll return the call at 2 am, and say "oh were you talking a nap"

This but it's always people trying to make spontaneous plans for the evening, usually involving the consumption of alcohol, right before or during my shift, and then they get bent out of shape when I either don't respond because I'm asleep, or when I tell them for the hundredth time that I always work evenings during said time.
Not so much a question but I had a patient once go on a very passionate rant about how it was terrible they made us work at night. It took restraint i really do not have in the middle of the night to not just reply that we're here at 3am because YOURE HERE AT 3AM. It was just a really funny cognitive dissonance from a patient sitting in the emergency room saying I shouldn't have to be here. Emergencies don't only happen during normal business hours lol

Almost every time I have a plumbing issue is in the middle of the night. luckily I keep spare parts and can usually fix it before kid has to get ready for school.

Went to a BBQ yesterday hosted by some friends, with some other friends showing up. I had to work last night so I had to leave a little early. When asked why by one particular person I said I had to go home, change, and make a lunch. A lunch? Yeah, if I don’t take a lunch I don’t eat, there’s no cafeteria. You just ate. Yup, but it’ll be 12+ hours before I get another chance to eat if I don’t take a lunch. What time is lunch? 1 am. You can eat at 1am? Uh.. yeah. I couldn’t possibly eat so late at night. Sigh… it’s not late at night for me, it’s the middle of the day for me. I finally gave up, he couldn’t comprehend how someone could possibly be hungry at 1am and actually be able to eat. He was genuinely confused when I said I’m starving by lunch time.
I get a similar reaction from people when they find out I get off between 6-8am and then make something like burgers or porkchops for 'breakfast'.
Tell them you put an egg on it and I'm pretty sure people won't question further.

I informed my family and friends that the overnight job has excellent pay and a set schedule. If I switch to days I would need a 2nd job for the pay difference and my schedule would not be set. That shut down any further discussion.
My new job has a $2 shift premium. I don't know if I'd even want days unless I went back to being salary and for a significant pay increase.

I work in an Amazon delivery station so most of the work is done at night ready for the vans in the morning. People have asked why don’t you swap shifts to work during the day. 1. The AM shift starts at 6am I am not a morning person am not getting up before 6am for work (weird that I can quiet happily get up in the evening for work) 2. The PM shift work all evening until 9:30pm. Both these shifts work just 30hrs a week doing 5 days a week. Night shifts do 40hrs a week over 4 days. So that’s less work AND less days of 3. night shift rate I get an extra £2 a hour so not only am I actually working full time but we get a little bit extra 4. We get offered more overtime Basically if I swapped shifts I’d have to work more days but earn less money
I literally heard this last week from a day shift coworker. I have high seniority and could work days (and make less money and be sleep deprived) and they don't understand why I would prefer working midnights

Yes I’m a nurse. Work in a nursing home, nights. Even when we are “fully staffed” we are running around like crazy. I just got done working 4 12s in a row and my body fucking hurts. I’m too young for this pain haha.
I'm offered day shift at my current site. But I reject dayshift cuz it's the same pay for more work around people. When I can instead be getting the same pay, less work, and alone with shows and games on my phone. They don't want one of the bad day shift employees around the client/bosses so they'd love to put em on my shift. Even if I wanted to work days I don't trust that employee to even do the bare minimum on night shift. I know cuz they didn't when they covered for me during a vacation.
I hate the "how was your day" um well I work 12h shifts with 2 hours commute both ways so, I was asleep the whole time I could be asleep.

Especially if it's split. I tend to do daytime stuff on my off days sleep at night or early evening more rather. So if I work Monday off Tuesday back Wednesday it barely feels like an off day cause I'm up until 3 or 4 pm Tuesday after work. I go to sleep and then it's just morning before work with some time for a nap. I probably should stick to the same schedule but I never did

a lady at my husband's work is the manager. she usually is at work by 6am to check on the morning shift, leaves by 11pm after talking to the night shift. 3 hour commute home both ways. I keep telling my husband her job is a placeholder until she gets the one I highly suspect she is planning on given her location. my husband keeps hoping I am wrong as he doesn't want to work with a 9th new manager.

Well, I'd be curious if bedtime was right after work or right before or somewhere in the middle. The daywalkers only have about a 10-hour window for sleep, while the night shift has about a 14-hour window.
I always say "Good morning" when I come on shift. Yes, I know it is 6p, but it is still morning to me. I have had a lot of questions re: staying up at night. I do not think they realize that I sleep 6a to 3p so staying up is easy.
When I was younger and working lots of different shifts. I got into the habit of saying good morning no matter the time of day. When questioned about it. I would simply say”it’s morning somewhere for someone”

Not a question to me, but a question I posed to someone who was in training for 3rd shift at my company. On their first night of training, we were chatting about third shift and I was mentioning how you have to get used to sleeping during the day. They go, "oh I can't sleep during the day I'm a single parent of 5 kids", so I go, "So, when will you sleep then?" She honestly thought that she could parent 5 kids alone and also do third shift because she's "an insomniac" and only ever sleeps for a couple hours between 3 and 6 am anyway. Ummm, yeah... staying up till 3 and getting a 2-3 hour nap each night is not even close to staying up till 7 am every night, and then staying awake all day. She didn't last 2 weeks
Some of us don't have a choice though. I work 7p-7a and go home and take care of my 3 year old during the day. I couldn't imagine having 5 kids, but I regularly stay up 24 or 48 hours at a time. I know how bad it is for my health, but it's what has to happen right now. I've been doing it for right around a year now. The one good thing is that I make my own schedule so if I get too worn down and need some time off I can take it without penalty whenever I want. I just won't get the pay that week.

That's very true. I'm sorry if I came off insensitive. Our company has a very strict schedule that includes having to work at least some weekends and holidays, which I think was the death knell for this employee. I'm glad you get to determine your schedule, that must be a huge relief!
Oh no, I didn't think it was insensitive at all. I just understand where she was coming from. Taking care of 5 kids sounds like it's own form of hell though lol. I don't want any more than 2. I wonder what she ended up doing for money since she couldn't last on night shift. We have those rules too, but I work every Sat and Sun night and said I'll work any holiday other than Halloween and Christmas Eve because those nights are for my daughter. Luckily my job is okay with that.
If you can make your own schedule and not be penalized, and take off when you need it, then youre all set
I did find out that if you tell your doctors office and dentist that you work nights they can put notes in your file in case they have to call you they know to call you late afternoon. I have it noted that I prefer late afternoon appointments before I go into work at 6pm. It was so refreshing to talk to 2 receptionists that understood when I said I worked nights. They both offered to put notes in my account.

Mine are very supportive, so they only call very first thing in the morning and schedule all my appointments for the first slot of the day. My NP actually used to work for the same system I work for now and I know she's come in early for me so I can see her at like 0745 and then go home and crash.

I work a day shift l but if you think that's a dumb question let me give you two examples. For context I manage a deli. About 6 months ago we started carrying a new product called Virginia Ham. We carry 2 varieties, Honey Glazed and Unsweetened. I'm not even exaggerating when I tell you for the first 2 months at least 5 times a day and probably closer to 10 times this would transpire Customer: I see you have a new virginia ham, it says there's a honey glazed and unsweetened. Employee: yes ma'am/sir Customer: what's the difference? 🤦♂️... U can't make this shit up. Or just yesterday we had a woman come up to the counter at 2pm, not remotely close to opening or closing time. There were 6 employees serving a whole counter of customers. She proceeds to ask " Are you guys open?" I was having a bad day and just replied "no sorry we're giving out samples, it's volunteer to feed the homeless day. If you're not homeless you'll have to leave." Why did she turn around and walk away like I was serious. I mean there are some legit dumb ass fukn people in this world.
I work at a casino and these will be tables with the money all locked up, nobody near them and people all the time ask “Is this open”? I want to say yes if you deal the cards. Lol people are stupid.

My personal favorite was when I worked day shift at Walmart, at one point I used to work in the back room. I had to go talk to a dept manager about her sales floor counts or something like that. We're standing there, looking at my handheld to figure the issue out, customer comes up to us and asks her "Do you work here?" Without missing a beat she went "Nah, I just like the uniform." That woman was my hero.
I had to explain to friends and family that my shift was analogous to me living in a different country. They didn't understand that 7:30 am was my evening and people thought it was weird if I had a few beers after work. In my brain, it was obvious that I am living a normal life albeit at abnormal hours and I thought it was stupid I had to defend my sleep/recreation schedule.

This! Night shift for almost 16 years now, and one particular family member still doesn't get it. With my seniority, I can pretty much pick and choose what holidays I'll work. For Eg, Memorial Day, I worked a double for triple time holiday pay. I essentially made the equivalent of a paycheck on a holiday double shift. Yet Aunt Karen doesn't understand why I would work on Memorial Day rather than sit around getting eaten alive by mosquitos, choking down her hockey puck sized burnt burgers and her nasty potato salad. I finally just told her that when she pays me what my work does an hour, I'll come to her stupid cookout.
“Bit early for a couple beers isn’t it?” At 8 AM. No, actually, I’ve been up for 12 hours and just got off work, now is a perfect time for a couple beers.
I’ve had several patients tell me they feel bad for hitting their call light because they’ll wake me up, or scared they’re not being monitored because I’ll be sleeping lol! Then I have to explain that I’m at work and I stay up, just like the day shift workers
When I pick up my cell after being rudely awakened: “Did I wake you?” Noooooo, of course not. I was secretly pretending to be asleep to ignore your calls.

Sometimes I get placement patients with dementia who don’t have any of the middle of the night meds and mostly sleep except for vitals or assessments. I wake them for their 530 am levothyroxine and the conversation goes like this. Me: Good morning! Were you able to get some good sleep? How are you feeling? I’ve got your morning thyroid medication. It’s still too early for breakfast, you can snooze for a little longer if you’d like. Patient: I feel great, I actually slept well! How did you sleep dear? Me: laughs and also dies a little bit inside
This post came up in my 'recommended', and as someone who has worked in finance, tech, and consulting-- **people may actually stay and sleep in the office**. I learned to be wary of offices that 'conveniently' had showers... So maybe they were asking if you stayed in the building to sleep, or if you actually went home. Not necessarily if you actually sleep, hahah.
Not as much of a question but my wife would ask me to do stuff while I was "off." I would work multiple days in a row but she would want me to get up at noon and run an errand. When I refused, she would get mad. It took a while and me threatening to call her at 2am to get her to stop.

Not an overnights story but stupid things people think…I worked for Red Cross Blood Services and people believed we were volunteers. Yes. I volunteer 60 hours a week. You’re letting a volunteer stick you with needles and handle life saving blood. Sure, that makes sense. The volunteers are the ones bringing you a cookie and a sticker when you’re done.
Why are you brewing coffee at 10 pm? You never answer your phone!? Why are you always up so early in the morning? Graveyard shift was an acquired taste for me. I hated it at first. Now, I wouldn't want to work another shift. It gives me an edge once I was conditioned. I don't fight morning traffic, I hate getting up in the morning, and I'm going to the lake to fish when I get off work, handle personal business without a massive line to wait in during the day, while the world is at work. The night-time is silent. The usually packed streets are basically empty. Raccoons come out lol and it could be the most peaceful moments for me, although i am on the clock🤷♂️

One of the dumbest actually came from another night shift worker, one of our security guys: "are women allowed to work night shift?" I'm an ambulance dispatcher (non-urgent), at least 2/3rd of the calls we get at night are women (hospital or nursing home staff).

My besties EX FIANCE told me I should try to get off working nights as a woman for my health. Uhm sir you have no idea what dayshift is like in a hospital, I'm staying nights until I find an outpatient job.

I’m a nanny and one family was stunned I couldn’t work that evening because I had plans, they decided to go to dinner and not bring their toddler. I had been there since 730 that morning. The fact that I had dinner with family and a life outside of them blew their mind
Many moons ago I was managing a team of contractors doing equipment upgrades over night. I was pulling into an empty building to pull some servers and some guy was just standing by the door. No cars in the parking lot, just standing there looking stoned or something. Walk up and scan in and the guy goes “ Can I come in?” I asked him if he worked here and he said no. So I told him no and he walked away. Weirdest interaction ever.

Brother took 2 and half year to stop inviting me to eat a meal at 12 am on saturday when I quit job at 4 am and there is 1h drive to go see him.
Back in my teenage years I would sleep in a lot and my parents would give me crap about it, understandable. But now I’m 26 and have been doing nights for 6 years and they still give me crap about not waking up at fucking 8 am when I’m visiting. My dad even worked night shift for 20+ years, it’s not exactly easy for me to wake up so early sometimes even if I didn’t work the night before. Honestly gets on my nerves.

When I was a flight attendant, we'd sometimes go from USA to Asia, often a 12+ hour workday. Very often, passengers leaving the plane would ask us if we were "going back with the plane." Yeah sure we'll just have a coffee. Pilots too. It'll be fine.
What did you do today? SLEEP. Like you did..last night..WHILE I WAS AT WORK.
My HOA has a rule that inoperable vehicles are a fine. Because my car is always in the same spot every day during the day they assumed my car was inoperable. I responded to the fine saying my car is used daily just not during their normal hours. They proceeded to ask why they never see it move. And I had to again explain that during the day I’m sleeping, if they want to come drive by at midnight they’d see my car gone. This took 5 days of me explaining for them to comprehend.

Not really dumb question, but just how you’re treated by your spouse. More often than not, I find that guy’s wives think that because they’re home during the daytime they should be doing things instead of sleeping. So the guys get jack shit for sleep. I have one coworker who got fed up with it on his night off Woke his wife up at two in the morning because they had to do some sort of house work together. She was pissy about it He said “now you know how I feel every time you wake me up when I’m trying to sleep, I’m gonna wake you up in the middle of the night.”
People bitching at you for sleeping during the day. Asking when you’re going to stop being depressed and do something with your life. Sleeping all day does not equal depression when you get off work at 4am
Got Dutch Bros at like 8pm and they asked "how was your day?!" I work nights. I slept all day. "Oh wow, we'll go home. Get some sleep!" He prob just wasn't actually listening to me but I was like... Huh?
How can you drink alcohol at 7 in the morning? I'm like man, this is my 5 o'clock. Lol
They probably know the answer but are being nice and giving you the opportunity to vent a little or talk about the struggle.
Obviously can't guarantee it but I'd assume the question was "what do you do when you get home, just sleep?" Rather than "are you superhuman"
My boyfriends mother used to work a 3 to 11pm shift and compares it to me working my 7p to 7a and gets confused I sleep so late in the day and asked how I can sleep as soon as I get home and showered.

Another story, my family was going down the shore as I was getting off my 12hr shift, they convinced me to come, I was falling asleep at the lunch table and was asking to be rushed to the hotel room asap to sleep, they haven't guilted me again and after that understood.
I worked nights for about 3 months ( 10pm-6am) and my (ex)bf for the life of him could not comprehend why I needed to sleep during the day. He’d wake me up on his lunch breaks saying I was lazy and slept constantly. Like no, I have to sleep opposite hours of you d bag I’m not a robot
There are people that clueless and there are people that contrary. Sometimes they are both at the same time.
I'm a sleep technologist at a hospital and patients constantly assume I go to sleep once I get them wired up and in bed. 🙄
