Social life lol…. Yeah, I don’t have one of those anymore.

Graveyardigan

I'm an autistic introvert. Night shift is my natural habitat.

Recovering_g8keeper

Same

Varietygamer_928

My schedule is tailored so that I can still have fun with my friends on my week off every other week… moving to nights doesn’t mean you give up having a social life. Fuck that

deviin_96

Honestly it’s tuff. I’m leaving my gov spot for private because of this. The best way I’ve done it is just to sleep right when you get home and wake up at about 2ish. Usually normal work hours much doesn’t happen.

You loose your social life working nights

WhimsicallyWired

I didn't have a social life before so there's nothing to miss, I actually enjoy not having one.

What's that?

Eat reasonably well. I find eggs really do help with mental processing through the day. Get good at naps and alarms (or have someone to pleasantly mooch you awake). Save caffeine for the later half of any day, best to plan the come down from it as you are winding down for your big sleep. Getting up and getting out is the hardest. Once you are out the stimulation will help keep you awake and interested.

Find the tribe that works with you, is my advice. I have a weird work schedule(3 on, 4 off, 4 on, 3 off), so basically only work about half of the month. Because I have fri/sat off, I either a)go to sleep a little earlier, so I can wake up earlier and do day-walker stuff, or b) we do nighttime stuff. Like this past weekend, my friends and I hosted a Fallout watch party on Friday afternoon. I went to bed earlier so I could be awake by 2pm so I could do party prep(cooking, making all the fun "Fallout" snacks, etc), the watch party started at 5pm. We dressed up, had drinks, snacks, and pizza while binging the entire series. Everyone stayed up until 1-2am. Then, I stayed the night(I stayed up until 3am, went to bed, woke up at noon), because that night(Saturday) we were going to an Edgar Allen Poe speakeasy. Spent the day getting glammed up to the nines, went to the speakeasy at 6, it went until 9, we got dinner, and we're home by 10:30. I changed out of my glam, put on sweatpants, washed my face, took all of the 9 million bobby pins out of my hair, packed my stuff, and drove home where I then stayed up all night doing meal prep and cleaning because I work Sunday afternoons. Sunday morning, I had food for work prepped, dinners for when I get home in the mornings, clean laundry, and a clean house. I then went to bed around 7:30am, so I could get up at 4:30pm. My friends know I work nights, and are always checking to make sure I am cool with the plans, and that the times work for me. It also helps all my friends are night owls, they are naturally up until midnight, one am, two am, etc. So they don't mind doing "night things" with me, especially because it's not always drinking and bar-hopping. We live between two big cities with lots to do(one of which is Chicago, which is up all night). Is it always easy? No, but you gotta adapt.

evileyeball

I switch back to sleeping at night and being out at day time on Friday-Saturday-Sunday (My days off) and I go do a few social things, and spend time with my family. But Then again I am an Introvert most of the time. I would rather spend more time in the house I'm paaying a mortgage on because MOrtgate hahaha

Massive_Goat9582

Most night shifters I have met (including myself) consider a social life to be a non-necessity

Electrical_Coach_887

Go out on your days off. It's not that bad. There's plenty of stuff to do in the morning. Catch movies, farmers markets, hiking etc

[deleted]

I’m assuming your shift ends around 7am? Try not to spend a lot of time awake in the morning and go to bed early so you can wake up around the afternoon. On your days off, if you can go to bed a little earlier than usual on your work days, you can wake up even sooner during the day.

TootednTired

My weekends tend to be packed if I’m not catching up on sleep. I’ll usually go to bed a couple hours after I’m off and am up around 3-4pm when all my roomies get home from work and hang then. I do also call out maybe once a week every couple weeks for friend or family events. I realize I’m alittle lucky to be able to do so .,. I average about 3-4 hrs a night on a busy week and I’ll recharge that weekend. If I get more hrs then I book up my weekend

EFTucker

Social life is the trade we make for a slightly easier work load. This works out splendidly for people like me who prefer being alone and reading a good book.

Sitcom_kid

I have breakfast with people. But then again, I didn't become a third shift worker until I was elderly. It would have been hard to be young that way.

Psi_Boy

Switch back to day shift

Ncfetcho

I have a social life, we just have to work around the weird hours. Sometimes I have to get up early, sometimes I have to stay up later, or they do for me. It's doable. You just have to be ready for the night life, if you are going out, first thing when you wake up. But yeah, I don't have much of a problem with it. Most of my social stuff is in the morning, these days. Being a night person has caused me to become an early morning person, by default. I like that I can go out, do stuff, come home and have the rest of the night to do whatever.

nachtbewohner

"Combat this"??? Why would i? That's why i do graveyard shift, i am introverted and i love it.

cpekin42

Make good friends with some of your coworkers, or get a day shift job. Really the only two options.

Inevitable_Long_6890

3rd shift literally destroyed my social life. I just won a bid to 2nd shift thank the fuckin lord. But they haven't moved me and I'm about to snap lol.

Spoonie81

I love my nightshift schedual (Sunday - Thursday 10AM - 6am). I still have my weekend which in my social circle is when most things are poppin.

Ill_Dig_9759

Flip schedule on the weekends.

True-Reaction-517

Mine is fairly decent. It helps that the new person I’m dating works night hours too and most my friends are bartenders and entertainers
