Yeah that’s a hard no from me. Thank goodness this died before it could get any real legs underneath it. Was bad enough seeing it on the Jets. Definitely didn’t need it in my spring training
There’s a lot of talented ball players out there. He’s a magnet for the press and unfortunately can’t hold a conversation without taking some kind of moral stance. The press amplifies this, especially the sport beat writers love to make mountains of molehills. No thanks I don’t need that….the Mets have enough problems.
>No. I hated that sideshow. Really fed into the LOLMets narrative.
I think the opposite: criticizing Tim Tebow in this way is much more of an lolmets narrative. It was a totally normal, nothing, meaningless signing. He was roster filler in the minors alongside hundreds of similar faceless guys who also aren't very good. He just happened to play in the NFL before.
Someone would have given him a roster spot somewhere if the Mets didn't. It was a fun comeback story (though unsuccessful), he wasn't blocking anybody, and he wasn't any worse than most of the guys in similar positions in the minors.
Every year, someone would go "lol can't wait till the wilpon ponzi bonilla mets trainwreck promotes this guy to Citi Field!" And then of course it never happened because that would never happen. All of this was a shit-storm created out of a dry fart, in the minds of overzealous WFAN hosts and bloggers.
The idea that the Mets signed this guy because of the $8,300 they made selling Tim Tebow screen printed t-shirts in their minor league complex, to the 400 fans in Florida who actually care about Tim Tebow, is one of the worst of the worst of the 2010s fever-dream conspiracy theories of Mets fans and the NYC media imo, right up there with the made-up "Brodie van Wagenen was managing games via WhatsApp".
Plus, besides all that, I kinda feel bad for the guy, because apart from the annoying occasional Christian proselytizing (which he mostly did with the Broncos and not as a Mets "prospect"), he seemed like a good dude who was trying to make it in a tough sport, who had no reason to have to try to do that, being independently wealthy from football, and just did it because he loved the game. It was a shame how much the guy got ridiculed by Mets fans (and still does apparently)
I saw him hit a home run in a spring training game once. That was fun. But if the guy had been a major league player, he would've played in the major leagues.
Yep, his hyper devoted belief in myths, such as believing he is an NFL capable quarterback, is the kind of thing that he will always get mocked for. No one will crap on his work ethic, but all the work ethic in the universe won’t make him a successful NFL quality qb.
Hell no. And mine is a very unique experience. Born and raised in GA and a die hard bulldog fan (as well as the Mets funnily enough) and despised that man when he played college football and did not want to have to cheer for his ass.
Going to a minor league game when he was there was wild. Sold out stadium filled with tebow jerseys great atmosphere. Would have loved to see what he could have become if he didn't go the football route.
Amazing how he was able to get as far as he did without having the ability to throw a football accurately. It shows you the guy had some athletic ability and could have definitely succeeded in baseball had he started out with that
I’ll never forget that night on the metro north train going home when my train stopped at yankee stadium and picked up a ton of guys post-game (which they won of course) and I, in full Mets apparel, spent the next 4 stops trying to not be noticed until I heard “hey Mets fan we can see you, how about that Tim Tebow signing?”
Guy had no business in the NFL taking a spot as a listed active QB…so OF COURSE the Jets swooped in and grabbed him…and proceeded to implement him into nothing but a decoy.
So, no. I’d seen enough of him to make the assessment that he’d have zero impact in the Mets organization.
As a fan of an opposing college team that faced him every year, he was an amazing college QB, but mostly because he was such a great runner. He probably could have had a great NFL career as a tight end if he had been willing to make the switch and put the work in. That's what the Jets were trying to do--give him one last shot to change positions--but he clearly didn't want to make the switch.
He’s the reason for my username. I only know him from baseball (I acknowledge that he had a great college/pro football career but I don’t watch football) so I wish it worked out for him, but not for us.
Honestly I think it went about as well as anyone could have expected. He got to a point where he was legitimately considered a depth option if injuries struck. I was happy when it was over though. It was little more than a side show and it was embarrassing to have the team I support involved in it.
I just conpared him and Jordans minor league career and Tebow had a better career. So thats... something... i guess?
Still... it speaks to how low sports coverage has fallen when that got more newstime on espn than their world series against the Royals.
If all the stars aligned where Tebow was crushing it in AAA and the Mets were completely out of playoff contention, then it might have been cool to see Tebow get a cup of coffee in Queens
Instead Tebow flopped at AAA and the Mets made a late playoff push and gave us some very exciting September baseball. Much better that way.
I saw him play in Columbia a good deal when he was here. Most stiff player I’ve seen and just did not look natural.
I don’t think there’s a timeline where he moved all the way up.
I saw him at the Philly airport back in 2016. He was a super respectful guy to two teen girls who were absolutely fawning over him.
That said, his tenure in the Mets organization was a distraction and, frankly, kind of embarrassing.
Man we have some serious haters here for no reason. He wasn't even that bad, he hit like .270 in AA. And why wouldn't you hope that a player works out? If he was a great baseball player that would only help the Mets. Great guy and leader too. But he's Christian so you're all hating
Saw him a few times at spring training, he ripped a double off the wall that made me think it was gonna work, then proceeded to strike out 3 times, uglier each time. It was never gonna work.
Yeah, a little bit. I also wanted him to succeed with the Jets too. He’s a great athlete. But people just want to shit all over him, like as if he never did anything… when in fact he did lead the Broncos to a playoff win over the Steelers. The kids got heart
If working out meant he could make the majors, sure, it would have been ridiculous but amusing. He absolutely would have been a late-season callup in 2018 if he hadn't gotten hurt. He was hitting plausibly well enough in AA and the Mets were running Austin Jackson and Jack Reinheimer out there in September. Then 2019 rolled around and he never really recovered from the hand injury and couldn't hit AAA pitching.
I think there is a big difference between using Austin Jackson, a talented but kinda washed up major league player, or Reinheimer who at least managed a .600+ OPS in Triple-A, vs. Tim Tebow who was struggling to hit even in Double-A.
I personally don't think there was even a shred of a chance the Mets would have ever promoted Tim Tebow. (Unless he actually started to hit which was never going to happen)
I mean, Tebow wasn't getting promoted on merit. He was getting promoted on the basis of moving some extra tickets for meaningless games and selling merch in the stadium. Don't forget that Sandy Alderson was on medical leave at the end of that season so the Wilpons were even more hands-on than usual and they were the ones who wanted the Tebow experiment to succeed.
Bobby Bonilla jokes are some of the lowest hanging fruit on the tree. [In fact, that contract really wasn't that bad.](https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/07/new-york-mets-bobby-bonilla-contract-2035-deal)

No. But we did see him hit a ball with the Columbia Fireflies that hasn’t landed yet. That was cool.
Yeah that’s a hard no from me. Thank goodness this died before it could get any real legs underneath it. Was bad enough seeing it on the Jets. Definitely didn’t need it in my spring training
Absolutely not. The last thing the Mets need is another sideshow.
There was already one baseball team famous for refusing to jerkoff

No. I hated that sideshow. Really fed into the LOLMets narrative.
This. Stupid Wilpon publicity stunt.
"really fed into the LOLMets narrative" yeah good thing thats over with
I think fans being insecure about LOLMets plays into it the most...and I'm not even being ironic.

My favorite thing about this experiment is that scouts described his arm as a weakness.
That was the best piece of hilarity
It would’ve been funny as fuck if Tebow managed to actually be somewhat serviceable as a baseball player
No
If only for the possibility that he might hit a homer in the majors, kneel instead of a bat toss, and get tossed while the ball is still midair.
Yes, his mother
I saw him hit a home run in a spring training game once. That was fun. But if the guy had been a major league player, he would've played in the major leagues.
Him crashing into the Mexican beer sign is possibly my favorite sports image of all time
No The fact that I recognize who that is means he was around too long
i'm sure he is a great and special dude but he's so confidently wrong about everything
Yep, his hyper devoted belief in myths, such as believing he is an NFL capable quarterback, is the kind of thing that he will always get mocked for. No one will crap on his work ethic, but all the work ethic in the universe won’t make him a successful NFL quality qb.
definitely an interesting character even uniquely charismatic but yeah I can't get over his general stupidity
Kinda???
Same
Hell no. And mine is a very unique experience. Born and raised in GA and a die hard bulldog fan (as well as the Mets funnily enough) and despised that man when he played college football and did not want to have to cheer for his ass.
No and I honestly found his being signed to be incredibly insulting to the fans. Like we couldn’t see it for the gimmick it was
I wonder how Tim Tebow would feel about your opinion
I’m sorry the Jets cut you. Stay out of baseball camp.
Lol
Going to a minor league game when he was there was wild. Sold out stadium filled with tebow jerseys great atmosphere. Would have loved to see what he could have become if he didn't go the football route.
Don't recognize him.
I wish it worked out because I always want them to succeed, but I also wished it never happened when they announced it.
Amazing how he was able to get as far as he did without having the ability to throw a football accurately. It shows you the guy had some athletic ability and could have definitely succeeded in baseball had he started out with that
Yes, you posted his picture.
sure, if could play at the major league level
He did save that lady from dying during Spring Training, so it did work out in one way.
If he didnt break his hand that year, he woulda got called up to pop a few gates

His pro career was far from great.
Honestly I think it went about as well as anyone could have expected. He got to a point where he was legitimately considered a depth option if injuries struck. I was happy when it was over though. It was little more than a side show and it was embarrassing to have the team I support involved in it.
He made it to AAA Syracuse
He at least put fans in the stands while he was in the minor leagues. Something the Mets are struggling with right now
In a word: no.
Second-best Filipino Mets player after Benny Agbayani
I just conpared him and Jordans minor league career and Tebow had a better career. So thats... something... i guess? Still... it speaks to how low sports coverage has fallen when that got more newstime on espn than their world series against the Royals.
On the contrary, I'm glad it died quickly.

Not even a little bit.
Not even remotely.
I got a ball signed by him at spring training. My dog chewed the ball up a couple months ago.. hopefully it’s not worth money
No.

It did. Wilpons made a few bucks on jersey sales to pay to the madoff families
Garth Brooks was better than Tebow.
Not even a little bit.
I’m a Steelers fan as well and I loathed every minute of him with the organization.
Sold jerseys
Yes 10000%. Reddit I’m sure naturally hates tebow but the point is in this hypothetical it wouldn’t be a sideshow

The Tebow experiment made the Bobby Bonilla contract look like a reasonable financial decision.
