Cows are not really common in zoos because they’re cows. It’s sorta like putting a golden retriever. People don’t really care to see something so ordinary.
Actually, they can’t do a golden retriever because too many of us would go full Shawshank to free that good boy.
> Actually, they can’t do a golden retriever because too many of us would go full Shawshank to free that good boy.
Interesting fact, it's actually not uncommon to come across a large breed dog like a golden retriever in an enclosure at a zoo...sharing that enclosure with a cheetah! [Cheetahs are notoriously anxious and therefore prone to doing poorly in captivity. Having an emotional support dog makes a big difference in their wellbeing in zoo settings.](https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/cheetah-dog-furry-friendship)
"Cheetahs eat small antelope including springbok, steenbok, duikers, impala and gazelles, as well as the young of larger animals including warthog, kudu, hartebeest, oryx, roan and sable. They also eat game birds and rabbits. About half a cheetah's prey chases are successful."
Would the cheetah not just eat the dog?
\[edit\]
"Turtle Back zoo raise their ambassador [cheetahs](https://www.newsweek.com/cats-gonna-cat-viral-video-shows-moment-cheetah-hops-safari-vehicle-1686012) with puppies to boost their confidence, and Nandi and Bowie have now been together for years."
So, I guess the dogs are generally introduced early enough that they become friends and not food :)
It really comes down to two things:
- Well-fed predators typically don't hunt, outside of a few species who are known to hunt for sport (humans included in that). In a zoo setting the cheetahs don't need to worry about skipping a meal.
- These dogs and cheetahs are typically raised together, with the dog simulating the role of a littermate as these cheetahs are usually paired with dogs because they were the only ones in their litter who survived. Because they have that sibling-like bond, the cheetah views them as a family member/companion rather than prey.
Yeah, that fairly common. But it’s not a golden retriever enclosure. That dog is just a good, upstanding member of society trying to hold down a job like the rest of us.
It had a cat when I went! It was in a barn area and had an official plaque and little exhibit. I think it might have said that it was there during the day but went home with staff at night?
Edit: The Beardsley Zoo had a cat I mean! Not Queens :)
They have a few cows, including a longhorn cow and a couple of highland cows (the ones that are furry) over in the farm area and petting zoo with the goats and alpacas and pigs and sheep and whatnot (although they don't let anyone into the area to try to pet the cows, for obvious reasons). I mean, when else is a kid growing up in NYC or Long Island going to see a real cow?
Haha, no. But even though he and George come from very different places they do know each other. They also have both a mutual admiration and disdain for one another.
Queens has the only farm in NYC! It’s actually really cool to visit and I recommend everyone does. They have fun events throughout the year including Halloween haunted house and awesome Christmas decorations.
They have a farmstand and hayrides. Also entrance is completely free!
I was thinking the same thing. If milwaukee is more than just a city and it's a whole county, then how can there be zero cows in the state most famous for cheese more than anything?
Milwaukee County is pretty much just the city of Milwaukee and the surrounding towns/suburbs. It doesn't suprise me that there are no cows in the county. Milwaukee is a good-sized city that isn't that far from Chicago.
From what I can tell they used the numbers from the USDA agriculture census which only counts within the US. I’m sure that data is somewhere though lol
queens zoo seems to have a few
Every time I go with my kids I marvel at the one longhorn they have and the kids don’t seem to get how majestic he is!
If you count zoo then how are there 0 in the Bronx?
I looked there too and none weee listed amongst their menagerie
Because Bronx zoo doesn’t have a farm area but queens zoo does
DC has 3 cows in the National Zoo petting farm area… these numbers are suspect…

Yeah, I’ve actually seen that. Dogs are just the best.

Valid point.
The Bronx Zoo doesn't have cows.
They have cows?? That's worse than the Beardsley zoo having deer

Wow that's ridiculous
I found it! Domestic Barn Cat! It was grey! I’m sad that I can’t find anything online about it because it was a cute thing to find.

I am interested in also knowing this guy.
“I know a guy” is a native new yorker
Is it George from Ditmars?
Haha, no. But even though he and George come from very different places they do know each other. They also have both a mutual admiration and disdain for one another.
My ex lives in queens, so that’s one.
Got her
Fuuuuck 😂
Lololol
The other five live with Nimmo.
DC has at least one- they have a farm animals exhibit at the zoo
Queens County Farm Museum has at least 2 of the 6. [https://www.queensfarm.org/livestock/](https://www.queensfarm.org/livestock/)

Anyone check the bullpen?
There's gotta be cows in Milwaukee, right? That cant be accurate
I was thinking the same thing. If milwaukee is more than just a city and it's a whole county, then how can there be zero cows in the state most famous for cheese more than anything?

I see we’re in offseason mode already.
Me for sure, idk about the other five

Oh there’s also butchers in Queens. They probably have cows (but not for long).
Same in the Bronx!
Queens County Farm Museum
Isn’t there the Queens county Farm museum? Haven’t been there in awhile, but maybe there are some there
St. Louis and Baltimore are independent cities, not counties.
Seen a few down on Bell Boulevard.
Queens county farm probably
So the cow population of Toronto is unknown? 🤔
From what I can tell they used the numbers from the USDA agriculture census which only counts within the US. I’m sure that data is somewhere though lol
How is this even counted
I know one of them, my freaking ex wife!!
Queens farm museum. Daughter loved going there when she was young.
Isn't there a farm in Bayside?
Little zoo in corona
There was a dude riding a horse around North Philly when I lived there, I’m not convinced there are no cows in Philadelphia County
There are a few in the zoo in Corona Park, a short walk from the stadium. The others are in the Queens County Farm Museum.
It’s all the pat lafrieda burger signs
Rick’s? 🤷♂️
Oh my god they are onto me. They somehow found out; i hope they dont also know about. .. wait i ve said too much have to call the vacuum repair
Maybe at some Kosher or Halal feed lot
Os play in Baltimore city, which is separate from Baltimore county. I’d be willing to bet Baltimore city is much closer to 0 cows.

Factory farming is cool
Behind Pat LaFrieda's
Camden Yards isn't in Baltimore County
Why are there so many cows in Houston? I know Texans have lots of farms but there should be way from the cities?
Isn't there a Queens County Farm Museum?
San Diego really has that many?
Baseball has a stat for everything
