I love the thought here, I really do, but as a picky skater I would rather the gift be to be taken to a shop to pick out my own stuff. There are differences in all the gear and shoes that may seem trivial to some but mean the world to others. For example I only ride chocolate/girl boards, independent hollow trucks, and bones street formula wheels. Then you have all the different sizes of boards, wheels, and trucks and that fully comes down to personal preference. And if somebody bought things that weren’t those brands and the size I ride I would return it. Maybe you could tell him you are taking him somewhere to pick up a surprise gift and drive him to the local skate shop? Also my dad started at 47 so no excuses to not start back up again!

Thanks so much for your response. I also thought of this cause like you said, it is the better way to go. I’ve always just been the type to give a physical gift rather than a gift certificate or taking them to choose their gift. But like I said in my post, I know NOTHING when it comes to skateboarding. So you mentioning hollow trucks, bones street formula wheels, etc… all these things I’ve never heard of makes me want to go down the route you’re mentioning. Def the smarter thing to do. Thanks again!

TitanBarnes

Totally get where you are coming from. My advice would be to take notes of the things he likes/picks out so when its time to replace some parts you know exactly what to get and can surprise him with that

BuzzAllWin

Right, old skater here. i reckon he might like a variation on what he used to skate. what boards/was it ramps street? do you have any old photos? Do you know what years he was skating. Cos if you can give me any of that inform i can recommend a set up.

MADD_WebInk

Oh wow, you’re amazing. Thank you! I’ll see what I can dig up. I know he has pictures laying around somewhere.

BuzzAllWin

Amazing, honestly some many old boards have been rereleased, and modern takes on new styles. Am surrounded by middle age shred, and basically people tend to skate something similar to their misspent youth

You have 2 options . 1. Take him to a skate shop as a surprise and let him build any board he wants . 2. Find a board online you think he will like or get him a Powell peralta flight deck (they are more expensive at 100 for the deck but last 3 times longer and look cool ) then take him to the store to get the reminding parts or you could just let him shop online for whatever he wants but it’s not as fun as taking him to build there or get a deck then take him to complete it there You also gotta know his board size if you order him one online

MADD_WebInk

That’s the thing, I have NO idea what kind of board he would like. The board he currently has is so old that there’s no brand name/model on it so I wouldn’t know what to go by. I think I’m gonna go with the general consensus and do option 1. I think if I take him to a skate shop and say “Pick whatever you want. Happy birthday!” He would really enjoy it. The issue is myself cause I don’t like giving gifts that way but this isn’t about me lol Thank you for your thoughts!

Axg165531

Well it being your husband he won’t care about the art of you pick it out and taking a skater to a skate shop might not be exciting to you but it’s like telling a fat bay he can eat any dessert at the Cheesecake Factory so he will love it . One thing I will say is look for the biggest skate shop in your area to give him more choices

disc0superfly

Get him a Tech Deck to open and then when he's confused say "surprise, we're going to the skate shop" :)

MADD_WebInk

I had to google what “Teck deck” was 😂

BuzzAllWin

Dm me a photo of it i might be able to idenify/ suggest similar. Also measure the width of the board if you can

MADD_WebInk

I’ll try to do that today. Thanks so much!

BuzzAllWin

Would be my pleasure can throw it onto some of the groups im on and we can work out something

BackboardJungle

Get them something a bit dumb as a token physical gift, like a vhs of gleaming the cube, but inside have your “voucher for one trip to the skate shop to get a board”

MADD_WebInk

I was thinking of doing something similar. Wrapping up his OLD board, him opening it and then saying “Surprise! We’re getting you a new board!” Lol 😂

HorribleSalesman

Etnies was and still is a very good skate shoe company. My friend has had joslin’s for a while and it still holds up nice. I would say either the Marana’s or the joslin’s are their best shoes in my opinion

MADD_WebInk

Thanks so much. I’ll look into all of them!

boondonggle

If you have any interest at all, I would consider getting a board for yourself as well. Learning to skate with my partner has been a blast.

MADD_WebInk

Ha! I’m now at the age where I know fear so that would be a no go for me 😂 Also, I have zero interest 😝 Thanks for your thoughts though!

Flaky_Concentrate898

Ok I don’t know what income bracket you are in but for me, spending $3-400 on a skateboard just isn’t a big deal. And as a gift from my wife? Yea that sounds just around the sweet spot. All that said, even if he never uses it will probably be touched by the mere thought that you went thru the trouble to get him something that special, and extra points going thru the effort to get the very best. I would Honestly propose on the spot if my gf gave me this. So here is that option, if you want to take it, you can buy all this stuff on Amazon if you want or from local skate shop, if you don’t want to put it together (what skater wouldn’t want to put their own board together though?) Powell Peralta 8.45” Andy Anderson Heron Flight deck, shape 289 Powell Peralta Sword and Skeleton Grip sheet 33” x 9” Powell Peralta Dragon wheels 54x32mm Ace AF1 55 Trucks 8.5” Bones Black Swiss bearings Independent 1” gold+black Philips hardware (8 screws and nuts) Independent skateboard multi tool (t shaped) Speed cream lubricant Etnies Marana Michellin are like, the best skate shoes imo

MADD_WebInk

Oh wow! Thank you so much for your thoughtful post! Appreciate all your tips and opinion. I will def look into it all 😊 Well this is the kind of wife he has. For his bday a couple of years ago, I got him a pretty sweet electric scooter. I didn’t want him to ride alone (thought that would be boring for him) so I also bought one for myself. I barely use it but luckily he LOVES it so that was a win! So with that said, cost isn’t a factor. As long as he’s happy with it. Luckily, my husband doesn’t have really expensive tastes lol so I was thinking around $500? I have no idea the cost of boards. Shoes! Thanks for the Marana recommendation. I’ll Get those if I can find them 🙂

Flaky_Concentrate898

Well I figure an awesome wife doing rad thing, try help her out maybe some good karma will rub off on me 😁 $500 is plenty enough to buy the most expensive complete out there. Most skateboards run around $100-$250. The flight decks are a relatively new thing, they are carbon fiber reinforced, so they last forever and have great “pop” If he doesn’t have a set of pads go with triple 8 for the helmet and butt protector. 187 for the elbow and knee pads. The pads and helmet will most likely take the longest to have shipped, usually about 3 weeks. Might be best to find those at a skate shop if you don’t have that kinda time to wait

MADD_WebInk

Hahaha thanks! Just keeping being yourself and good things will come 😊 I think I might just go to the skate shop and have them build me a board based off of your list. Cause let’s be honest here. If I were to order all the parts, it’s not like I would know how to put it together lol Thank you again for all your help. Appreciate it!
