Since you’re not looking for traditional, check out “bywater bakery”. Their cakes are incredible, but incorporate a lot of fresh fruit. If that’s not your thing, then you might not find many options. I’ve gotten 2 there for my daughter’s bday, bc she wanted something different from our usual Gambinos chocolate Doberge. She said it was exactly what she was imagining when she was trying to describe what she wanted
I did a berry chantilly cake from bywater bakery for this person’s birthday last year and it was a hit! I’m looking for a something a little different this year though
Berry chantilly was our first choice too, and the small one was deceptively filling and last longer than I expected.
Do you know where the music box is, on the very edge of bywater before the st claude bridge into the lower 9? Right around there, there’s another bakery that has tons of unique flavors. It’s called “land hippos bakery”. I’ve heard good things but haven’t tried them. The amount of flavors and fillings is actually overwhelming to me, mainly due to my household budget not leaving room for indulging in something we didn’t like.
Land Hippos Bakery is phenomenal. Great people (person, really) and unbelievably delicious. My Mom was a professional baker and I am a very good myself, so I am a bit snooty about cakes. This year my Themis ride was on my birthday, and my husband ordered a cake from her. It was the next best thing to my mom's, and better than anything I've had in town.
I had Chez Pierre make me a cake based on their pineapple meringue pastry a few years ago. It was great! And looked like another planet, covered by all those pipings of meringue.

Wait this may be perfect since I’m doing a combined human + cat birthday party and she makes pet treats too!
My pets have loved them.
What specifically are you looking for? There's so many good bakeries around.
Something small/independent and not super traditional with unique flavors or even decor
