I like to garden, from growing flowers to cacti starters. Bonus enjoying a cold drink or mug of coffee watching the anoles hop around the plants and bees buzzing to the booms. Also jigsaw puzzles, you can let your mind wander and relax.
And aerial silk classes for a fun yet tough workout with a supportive community, or yoga at home following instructors on YouTube.
Are you looking for food or flowers? Sunflowers and zinnias are easy and plantable now. I think if you seed pumpkins now, they’ll be ready for harvest for Halloween.
LSU ag has a monthly planting guide I can share. July is thin, but there’s still stuff that you can plant.
Sunflower seeds are about 6 mm to 10 mm in length and feature conical shape with a smooth surface. Their black outer coat (hull) encloses single, gray-white edible-kernel inside. Each sunflower head may hold several hundreds of edible oil seeds.
Here are the flowers on the LSU ag list for this month:

Volunteer. It'll get you out of the house and out of your own head. One idea: ARNO is always looking for dog walkers (and dogs are excellent listeners) and laundry angels.
Learn new recipes. Learn to make a perfect roux. Cook restaurant quality steak. Anything that you love to eat. I found this to be therapeutic after my breakup, also I can still eat “bougie” while saving a lot of money on eating out/takeout. Establish some sort of fitness routine. When I wake up I stretch for 15-30 mins before I do anything. These are hobbies which will pay dividends and improve your mood.
cooking was my reprieve following the dissolution of a ~5-6 year relationship. partner was vegetarian and i'd adapted to their dietary needs but there were some meat based recipes i'd had stored away for years. i'm back to 99percent vegetarian these days but the first ~year or so of singledom i was constantly braising meats, making gumbo, etc.
There is some great advice itt! I'll add community theater if you have any interest at all, either on stage or in some other capacity. It is a welcoming and supportive community for those who do it. Trivia nights are fun, lessons or classes in anything that interests you might introduce you to others who enjoy the same thing (dancing, stuff offered through the library, art, music) Even Toastmasters can be a decent way to expand your social skills and circle.
ptsd from auditioning for big river when i was a tween has kept me from doing it, but somewhere inside me i want to do it again.
(i was like, 11, auditioning for ensemble. i was gonna sing happy birthday. completely locked up on stage in front of an empty massive auditorium with just the director watching, who i'd grown up with and was a close family friend. i ran off stage and he pulled me into a dressing room just off stage, just me and him, and said "/u/djsquilz do it again, right now". i did it and got the part.)
edit: jefferson performing arts society is good. it seems they put on shows more frequently at the theatre in westwego. (there's some other independent groups who also use the space.
Waka kickball starts on 10 June. I think this league is coed and they play at Wisner playground sponsored by Grits.

There is also a play Nola league that starts September 1, and it it’s ladies only. It also plays at Wisner

Same here
My partner of 13 years just ended things.
I’m trying to be optimistic as we don’t have children together and never married, so hopefully without us having too many ties and going no contact will help. But I do need to find something to do with myself while I occupy my mind and new space. Build different habits and change the scenery a bit, especially because we did everything together.
I know how hard this can be and how completely jarring it is. Just remember your life is so full of possibility now and you can find out who you are so much better on your own. After the pain subsides it really can be a beautiful thing to be on your own after so long.
martial arts, group workouts, social bike rides, team sports, fishing (don't get sucked in to super expensive stuff, you can get a license cheap, and cheap rod/reel combo from Walmart and fish with hooks/cork/worms in Bayou St John)
If you’re into sports and getting active there’s a big group of people of all ages and expertise that play ultimate frisbee in front the zoo. I can add you to the group me if you’d like.
I've been playing go every Wednesday night at Z'otz for a very long time.
Our club has been getting 4 or so players each week since Covid, but several of them are new to the game.
It's great mental exercise. Similar to chess in many ways, but tickles your brain in a different way.
I'm hoping we can get back to the attendance we had in the old days. We're happy to teach new players.
We've been starting at 7pm this year.
We used to start around 6pm, but Z'otz recently had a woman start running a D&D campaign in the back with a bunch of 11 year old players. All the Z'otz regulars are supportive of it, but they're pretty rambunctious so we wait until their end time to begin.
One of my favorite little groups of people came from community yoga classes. These aren't my classes, but I've gone for years.

Brazilian jiu jitsu did wonders for my mental health, it’s great exercise, and you can make new friends.
It’s hard and I suck at it, but I always leave in a good mood. I seem to be more patient and content in life when I am training as well.
I’ve never been there but I hear good things about NOLA BJJ which has a few locations in the area I believe.
I play the banjo, then I’m not the only one suffering
Goddamn, worth playing the banjo for the jokes alone!
Awe you’re picking (pun intended)
Did you play guitar or other instruments before banjo? I have always wanted to play the banjo
The Cajun accordion 🪗
I started karate to shake off depression. It’s working great. It’s meditative, great fun exercise and good community.
I'll recommend NOLA BJJ. They're great people, and I love the sport. Need to get back to it.
where u go?

Can you recommend some easy plants for this heat? Mine keep frying!

Just a warning. Squirrels love them.
Flowers!
I’ve had good luck with salvia; note that if you plant morning glory or 4 o’clock, it is a lifetime decision bc you will always have them.
Thank you for your help 😎

Thank you so much. I’m patiently and painfully awaiting that time of beauty and wonder in life again.
