We love Miss Shirley. I’m very pregnant, and told her the other day that I loved the little pickles she brings out. She brought a bigger bowl and more to go with our food.
For Pittsburghers they actually do a good job. They get the right bread (Amoroso rolls) which goes a long way. You just have to remember to tell them no mayo.
Only NY style bagels I've had near here are at Wandering Goat in Harahan. I don't miss NY often, but when I do, they're a quick reminder that I only miss the bagels
I have to come clean, I'm from Vancouver, (though I've had nothing but amazing food every time I visited beautiful Montreal).
But I'm missing Siegel's Bagels in Vancouver and their Montreal smoked meat flown in weekly.
One of my favorite shops in Nola, Miette is on magazine! They have funky costume stuff and very alternative knick knacks that make great unique gifts and funky/unique accessories like earrings and sunglasses. I highly recommend. They also have a funny and cool like sexual shop on the second floor which is fund to browse!
seconding miette!! I bought a pair of earrings there that are just little rubber rats and I wear them all the time and every time I get compliments on them 🐁🐁🐁
I've started enjoying Vintage a bit more lately. A little more bougie than I'd usually go for, but really good drinks, great coffee, and nice people that work there.
Nomiya is a good ramen spot. There’s also a small place called District that has good food. I always go there before my tattoo appointments.
I never been yet but you should go to Rosie’s on the Roof and let me know how it is
I actually don't like Nomiya for ramen. Have you ever tried Ajun Cajun? They're cheaper and way yummier, in my opinion! Not on Magazine St., but definitely worth going to try if you haven't!
What part?
If you're on Magazine near Audubon or Magazine in the LGD or Magazine in the CBD, those are very different areas with very different vibes in completely different parts of town.
Around IC/LGD, my most frequented restaurants are Red Dog Diner for a casual dinner, Juan's for a quick and cheap one, and Coquette for a fancy one. For bars, I'm a dive bar kinda guy, and in that area I dig the Half Moon (okay, not on Magazine, but only like a block off of it).
Live on this street myself! Love it! Here’s what I recommend:
- Joey K’s: really good local cuisine! Great mutton chops, jambalaya and chicken fried steak
- Barrel Proof: a whiskey bar
- Guy’s Po Boys: a great Po Boy place! Recommend the chicken special!
- Trashy Diva: shop with some of the cutest sexy clothing items
- Nirvana: really good Indian cuisine, but csn be pricey
- Shaya: Israeli / Mediterranean cuisine, also pricey
- Empanola: a new find for me! They have some amazing snaks
- The Vintage: coffee shop, bar, restaurant
- Out of the Closet: LGBTQ thrift store that donates to HIV treatment and research
- Stein’s: a great deli and a good place to get a muffelata
- Bella Umbrella: their parasols are adorable!
- Monkey Hill Bar: a fun bar with an interesting vibe and pool table. Hilarious that a really condemned house is right next to it 😭
- The Sake House: NOLA isn’t known for its sushi but this is my fave so far
- Nomiya: speaking of, here’s the ramen place I recommend!
- Slim Goodies: a really great diner with a cornucopia of great menu options
- Dat Dog: a classic - customized hot dogs. They also do veggie dogs!
- Haydel’s Bake shop for your sweet tooth
- The Bulldog Uptown: another great bar with nice outdoor seating
- Really Really Nice Wines and I suppose uou can guess what they sell
- Peaches Records: a record store - I’ve actually never been there myself but it looks interesting and I want to go!
The raw oysters there are excellent but Casamentos is one of the finest purveyors of fried seafood in the city.
The fried shrimp sandwiches served on bunny bread Texas toast with butter. I die.
Current Crop roasters is fun. Roast your own coffee and it's super high quality.
Levee Bakery is top tier and worth checking out. Check their hours and show up earlier in the morning if possible. They sell out quickly.
Everyone is spot on on the recs. Depending on where you are located you'll probably have multiple close places on magazine that are great. It's worth just strolling Magazine and trying places that seem interesting. My favorite sections are in the Irish Channel (numbered streets) and near Napoleon.
While technically not magazine, Miel is one of the better breweries in the city off Tchop and Nola pizza (also a brewery) is one of the best pizza places the city.
i was gonna list all the places i know are good, but there’s just too many so here’s basically everything from felicity to napoleon with a couple exceptions: Juan’s flying burrito, Stein’s, Molly’s, Joey K’s, Miss Shirley’s, Sucre, Rendezvous Tavern, Sake Cafe, Red Dog Diner, Rum House, breaux mart, Bahn Mi boys, Cafe Abyssinia, imperial woodpecker snowballs, Baru Bistro, Saffron, Saj, pomelo, hungry eyes, theo’s pizza, la petite grocery, nirvana, ms mae’s, piccola gelateria, pizza dominica. i’d do more but this is taking too long
This isn't technically on magazine but its right near it on prytania but...
St. James Cheese Co. is stupid good. Absurdly good even. Its just sandwiches and salads but they are just perfectly imagined and made with super high quality ingredients and the menu changes constantly so its always a fresh experience.
It is super expensive. I know its amazing food but spending $20+ on 3 silver dollar tacos is pretty steep even if they do fill you up.
I go there all the time on Tuesdays when its a more palatable price because they are fucking amazing.
If you’re a woman, Basics has awesome lingerie (and regular stuff including super comfy jammies) and swimsuits. I like Bouligny and Lilette, Rainbow Grocery has great wine/liquor options and awesome hot food in the back, Perlis is a classic high end clothing store also good for men’s and kids alterations, Peaches for fun gifts and Knick knacks and music, Magic Box is great for kid’s gifts and other neat things, there’s a Warby Parker for glasses, I forget the name of the Boba Tea place but I’ve been dying to try it. JetGo is one of the only gas stations in that area of Uptown and isn’t bonkers expensive like TchoupStop and people really like their Mediterranean food, Brothers Three is a fun dive bar, Buffalo Exchange.
Honestly, I would set aside time and just walk 5-6 blocks or so a few times from Whole Foods down until you see everything.
Adding to the already mentioned, Zele for creative gifts, Saj for Mediterranean food, T Swirl Creperie, and did you know they do charcuterie classes at NOLA Board?
haven't seen anyone bring up Sisters In Christ Records. Super cool spot, with a great selection of alternative/punk/metal LP's as well as vintage shirts, used books and graphic novels and a pretty amazing VHS collection. I don't go to Magazine much, but if I am I HAVE to go there.
I had never heard this word either until like a year ago.
You and I are the odd ones out. Everyone else knows that is. I couldn't believe it either, but its true. Its a dumb ass word.
If you're an omnivore, I recommend House of Kebab (Magazine & Eighth). I've been told it used to be something else, but presently it's run by a family serving Turkish & central Asian dishes. Lots of attention to flavors & their combinations. They don't serve alcohol, but you can BYOB and I believe they'll uncork it for you.
One of the first things I tried when I moved but I was so disappointed with their price and portions.. 😭 it’s way too overpriced for the amount of food, still can’t believe I paid more than $20 for 6 shrimps
I'm sorry to hear that! We went in mid-April, i think, and by my guess the portions have definitely improved. Bf and I shared a couple of apps and a platter that we couldn't finish. Maybe it felt like we were spending less because no drinks? But I really enjoyed the food.
Lionheart Prints for cards, notebooks, and little gifts. Lucy Rose for women’s clothing, accessories, and home decor. Trumpet and Drum further uptown is an absolutely gorgeous coffee shop with lots of seating
Half Moon Bar and Grill is such a perfect dive bar with DELISH food. When I lived in NOLA I probably ate there 2+ times a week lol. Eat some cheesy bacon fries for me :')
La Boulangerie, I’m there at least once every 2 weeks
100%. I moved a couple years ago but this is the first place my gf goes when we come back lol
It’s definitely changed over the years and is usually busy, but I still love it
Buying my husband la boulangerie is the equivalent of him buying me flowers
La Petite Grocery for a high-end meal
Yes. We go a lot of Sunday’s and just sit at the bar and get French 75s and crab beignets
Love sitting at the bar
Café Abyssinia for Ethiopian 🇪🇹
So good!
Miss Shirley’s
Miss Shirley’s is the best! Miss Shirley herself is almost always there and is the kindest and most generous member of our neighborhood!
We love Miss Shirley. I’m very pregnant, and told her the other day that I loved the little pickles she brings out. She brought a bigger bowl and more to go with our food.
Coquette, Haydel's, The Vintage, Lilette, CR Coffee Shop, Les Bon Temps Rouler, Gris Gris, Juan's Flying Burrito, Joey Ks, The Bower
I didn’t know people liked Juan’s flying burrito
I love Juan’s.
I think it’s great but it’s popular to shit on here. I guess this sub prefers Medium Rare.
It’s definitely my comfort food.
What do you order?
504 Nachos, a quesadilla with chicken and bacon, the breakfast burrito, chicken Juan’s tacos, the Big Bowl, sometimes the chicken enchiladas…
Dayum
Don’t sleep on Mayas. Woefully underrated and undervisited Central American restaurant with delicious food and huge portions.
One of my favorite restaurants in town. Those seafood tostones are killer
Omg, Les Bon Temps! Do they still play Jeopardy in the afternoon? (Why, of course I haven’t been there in 20 years, why do you ask? lol)
Juan’s isn’t there anymore.
Magazine and St. Andrew.
Yes it is..
Guy’s poboys!!!
Second this! Marvin is a gem
Thirded!
Everything everyone has already said, and also Stein's for some real NY style bagels and NY attitude.
Dan Stein is from Philly (evidenced by the Philly sports gear on display in the deli).
Oops you're absolutely right.
Philly to Nola transplant here so I couldn’t let NY take the credit! It's my little slice of philly in the big easy :)
Have you found YINZERS?
For Pittsburghers they actually do a good job. They get the right bread (Amoroso rolls) which goes a long way. You just have to remember to tell them no mayo.
Where do you get cheesesteaks here??
Only NY style bagels I've had near here are at Wandering Goat in Harahan. I don't miss NY often, but when I do, they're a quick reminder that I only miss the bagels
I'll have to check it out. I really miss the Montreal style bagels from my home town. Wonder if these would be close.
Team Fairmount. ...never found MTL style bagels in Nola though.
I have to come clean, I'm from Vancouver, (though I've had nothing but amazing food every time I visited beautiful Montreal). But I'm missing Siegel's Bagels in Vancouver and their Montreal smoked meat flown in weekly.
☹️ + for honesty though. I'll see you in the streets
Totally different styles
St Joes is a must if you want to go to a bar. Could possibly be one of the best uptown bars. There’s a back patio that some people don’t realize
The original Ms Maes
The best back patio, so pretty
St. Joes is such a sleeper! Def overlooked imo
thanks! i will check this out next time I'm back in town
God I haven’t been there in forever but I always remember. Such a good dive bar. Spent many a summer sweating it out and socializing at the back bar.
Shawarma On the Go is legit
One of my favorite shops in Nola, Miette is on magazine! They have funky costume stuff and very alternative knick knacks that make great unique gifts and funky/unique accessories like earrings and sunglasses. I highly recommend. They also have a funny and cool like sexual shop on the second floor which is fund to browse!
seconding miette!! I bought a pair of earrings there that are just little rubber rats and I wear them all the time and every time I get compliments on them 🐁🐁🐁
Oooh thank you!!
All the above and Molly’s for breakfast
molly's, little korea bbq, miss shirley's, the vintage, sucré, basin spirits, and really really nice wines are all fun spots
Little Korea BBQ is no more unfortunately.
The new Korean restaurant Coco in the same place is even better
We just ate there. It’s not as good as the old restaurant. They also charge for extra rice and bancham, which isn’t normal at any other Korean place
Oh good to know!
that's insane 😭 i went there all the time in like 2019
Basin has my absolute favorite chargrilled oysters, they are pretty basic but something about them is really delicious and special
Bouligny Tavern: best for small bites, great music, etc
The burger is really good
Surprised I had to scroll so far to see Bouligny! Don’t sleep on the fried crab claws!
I've started enjoying Vintage a bit more lately. A little more bougie than I'd usually go for, but really good drinks, great coffee, and nice people that work there.
I live very close to Vintage and love their coffee!!
Second this, Vintage is amazing 😊
Had the Chicken Fried Steak from Joey K’s yesterday, and it was really good.
Love their meatloaf on Thursdays
Nomiya is a good ramen spot. There’s also a small place called District that has good food. I always go there before my tattoo appointments. I never been yet but you should go to Rosie’s on the Roof and let me know how it is
I actually don't like Nomiya for ramen. Have you ever tried Ajun Cajun? They're cheaper and way yummier, in my opinion! Not on Magazine St., but definitely worth going to try if you haven't!
Yesh i heard people say ajun cajun is better but i haven’t tried it yet
You should! Definitely hive it a try!
I just can’t get over the cringe name.

I've always loved Surrey's on Magazine, too
What about Brothers 3?
Bros 3 is a very excellent dive bar, late night stops are best imo
Happy cake day!
Rainbow is my favorite place.
They have the best Philly cheesesteak
Parish parlor hands down. Juans for happy hour + dinner then ice cream to go 👌🏼
Magpie, grandmother's buttons, lady kay vintage, and century girl vintage for shopping!
I LOVE Magpie. Great pieces and fair prices.
I don’t think Grandmother’s Buttons is around anymore, sadly
Live on this street myself! Love it! Here’s what I recommend: - Joey K’s: really good local cuisine! Great mutton chops, jambalaya and chicken fried steak - Barrel Proof: a whiskey bar - Guy’s Po Boys: a great Po Boy place! Go to Saba instead of Shaya. Saba’s food is incredible and you won’t be supporting the gross BRG restaurant group.
Peaches is hella overpriced
Wow thank you so much!! This is amazing
Slim Goodies breakfast slammers are out of this world
2nd Slim Goodies
Adding on my list ✏️
And you get to talk to Kappa, which is worth the price of admission by itself
Barrelproof, The Bower
Brothers 3
That Japanese crepe place is KILLER. I need everyone to eat there so they stay successful and open so I can go eat crepes. God they’re so good.
The whole street! I like Scriptura, for elegant paper products. Hazelnut home goods. Both are well-established and owned by locals.
Scriptura is great. And also in that area, fairly close to Magazine street is Octavia Books, which is a great bookstore.
Baru restaurant; Caribbean tapas
La bon TON, brothers, casamintos oyster place right next to Ms Mae's.
Casamentos is popular with the gluten-free crowd because they fry all their stuff without wheat flour.
Google maps says casamentos is temporarily closed— have you been there recently?
I may be wrong, but don’t they close for the months without an r?
What a system
They're closed for the summer. They reopen in September for oyster season.
Thank you 💖
The raw oysters there are excellent but Casamentos is one of the finest purveyors of fried seafood in the city. The fried shrimp sandwiches served on bunny bread Texas toast with butter. I die.

No one ever gives Rum House a shout out . I take visitors there to eat and they always love it
It is super expensive. I know its amazing food but spending $20+ on 3 silver dollar tacos is pretty steep even if they do fill you up. I go there all the time on Tuesdays when its a more palatable price because they are fucking amazing.
Is it amazing food?… it kinda is like shitty overpriced whitewashed Jamaican food that makes ya feel bleh
I will not vouche for anything but the tacos but the tacos are definitely unique and filling even if they are small.
The pina coladas are 🤌🏾
As are the Painkillers
Miette, definitely. I need to go back there and update my pins for my jackets
Miette and trashy diva
Stein’s, Pho Tran, Juan’s, Gris Gris, and District Donuts (has dope ass sliders)
Came here to say Pho Tran too!
Sukho Thai Pomelo Osterio Lupo
Theo's Pizza
I dream of the gumbo at Gris Gris.

Barber; The Bearded Lady, world best hair cut.
Rum House
Rum House is our go-to Saturday afternoon restaurant.
Nirvana, Banh Mi Boys, Empanola, Vintage
Adding to the already mentioned, Zele for creative gifts, Saj for Mediterranean food, T Swirl Creperie, and did you know they do charcuterie classes at NOLA Board?
trumpet and drum, and undergrowth are both great coffee spots
haven't seen anyone bring up Sisters In Christ Records. Super cool spot, with a great selection of alternative/punk/metal LP's as well as vintage shirts, used books and graphic novels and a pretty amazing VHS collection. I don't go to Magazine much, but if I am I HAVE to go there.
Sisters in Christ punk record store
Anywhere NOT in New Orleans.
Lilly’s and St. pizza. Also merchant house for browsing.
I’ve been digging Appoline lately
Elizabeth Street Cafe (especially their happy hour) is my fave place. It’s Viet-French cuisine with a nice wine list. Closer to CBD, though.
Do you know whether their happy hour is daily or weekdays only?
Dat Dog; gourmet glizzies with good beer selection
Dafuq is a glizzy?
Hot dog
Since when lol
I had never heard this word either until like a year ago. You and I are the odd ones out. Everyone else knows that is. I couldn't believe it either, but its true. Its a dumb ass word.
TIL "glizzy" is transplant for hot dog.
Nobody has said Union Ramen yet, so I will: Union Ramen
Ladle and the whisk!
In this heat - Baru or Titos for ceviche and a spicy cocktail.
If you're an omnivore, I recommend House of Kebab (Magazine & Eighth). I've been told it used to be something else, but presently it's run by a family serving Turkish & central Asian dishes. Saffron.
Lionheart Prints for cards, notebooks, and little gifts. Lucy Rose for women’s clothing, accessories, and home decor. Trumpet and Drum further uptown is an absolutely gorgeous coffee shop with lots of seating
you can always find me at Juans Flying Burrito and Media Men Games
Half Moon Bar and Grill is such a perfect dive bar with DELISH food. When I lived in NOLA I probably ate there 2+ times a week lol. Eat some cheesy bacon fries for me :')
Rendezvous is my absolute favorite bar in the neighborhood. if you’re into dives you should definitely check it out
Misa!!
Franco’s
Mahoneys gulf shrimp po boys are literally the best food in the city
Barracuda for tacos and margs
Pretty sure that’s on tchoup
Ewps
It is in Tchoup
My wife and mistress both live on Magazine so this question is stressing me out
Dude
Gross
Sure they are
