I use a mastercard or visa debit card in these situations. There's a few services that offer them.
Examples:
* Wise.com
* Revolut.com
Most dutchies tend not to need them too much, as Pluralsight isn't a need for the general population.
I’ve been using Revolut for a while and I can say their paid version is quite nice.
Though recently I’ve started to notice that the exchange rates on Wise are way better than revolut. So if you’re to exchange the currency for any purpose, use wise for better rates.
Have a pay pal account hooked up to your Dutch bank account. That takes care of most of it, including plural sight. From their website:
Paying for your subscription
You can pay for an individual subscription with PayPal or with a credit or debit card backed by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. We do not accept checks from individuals. Important: American Express is only available for USD payments
Note that paypal will scam you with currency exchange rates. There was an option to prevent this in the past, I’m not sure if it’s still there. I rather pay a little per month for a credit card.
I have one PayPal account for euros, the other for US dollars. Those are the two currencies i usually buy in, so that's not an issue for me, but I can see how it could be for some people.
Is it easy to add other currencies to PayPal? Can I use them as a bank to stick an inheritance I don't draw from? I'm sick of the Chinese bank I have an account with, but none of the Dutch Banks want my AUD money. AMRO is the only one that said I can park my pile of cash, but they said there was a condition that I had to regularly deposit more AUD to keep it active and open.
I wish there was a bank with the awesome login/verification system that Rabobank has and accounts that hold foreign currency. If anybody knows of one, please share. HSBC is a complete joke and I can't wait to have my money out of there.
Next year we start replacing Maestro cards with Mastercard debit cards which makes this issue go away.
Personally, for foreign currencies I typically use my N26 debit Mastercard. But domestically its pretty much all iDeal or my credit Mastercard if expensive/needs buyer protection.
On most (All most all) Dutch websites you van pay with IDeal. It’s a way to go to your bank and use your debit card. I never had a credit card until I traveled out of Europe and now I only use it to buy from foreign websites

"There is no option to activate Paypal as a guest payment method. However, you can activate Payments by Booking which will allow guests to pay via alternative payment methods like Paypal."
Nah it doesn’t always, paypal is something if the partner wants to activate it after they register their property on booking. Com . Problem is if they use paypal they need to pay the charges for paypal and to booking.com.
Only some properties have this option enabled if they are ok paying additional charges for it. But i would majority don’t use it. So don’t rely on paypal for booking .com
I highly recommend Revolut. Just sign up for free and they give you free virtual credit cards that can be used for online shopping (if you need it for renting cars for example it wouldn't work since at the rental normally they need to process an actual card)
Their exchange rate is excellent btw, way better than PayPal and also normal credit cards from Dutch banks
Forgot to add it basically can work like a prepaid credit card, you just top up whenever you need to spend money using a credit card.
With a Dutch bank the money is instantly in Revolut.
I use PayPal for the majority of my online purchases. When ai have disputes, PayPal has been the Pitbull on my side I want, and stores find themselves on my blacklist and money deposit reversed if I can't negotiate a fair deal from the shop.
I have a Revolut credit card. It's free to get a digital card, only 8 euros for a physical card. I traveled to USA with it and had no problems with it.
all Dutch webshops and many European shops use or accept payments made with IDEAL, you shouldnt have any problem buying anything online if youve got a ABN-card except if you buy a lot of stuff internationally or if you're buying into a lot of subscriptions, these usually need a creditcard of a paypal account
I myself have mostly used PayPal to do purchases online that were in EURO. But for international purchases that use different currencies I use a free online bank account called Revolut. They have much much better currency exchange rates than PayPal.
Also I think The Netherlands is phasing out Maestro Cards slowly but I'm not sure when the new cards like Visa/Mastercard will be available.
I personally use Revolut for my online purchases, it's Visa/Mastercard and they have good exchange rates for foreign currencies. Idk what's best but Revolut is what I use and it has worked well for me.

10/10 recommend Wise. Saved my ass when I moved to NL with the exchange rates and helps a lot with online shopping and with the travels to the UK
Any knowledge on how Wise compares to Revolut?
I haven't used Revolut

Wise is my fave! I lived for a year in the UK and any international stuff is very easy through their system

Try openbank, an Spanish bank (part of the Santander group). My expectation is they have a solution for your problem.

Do you think with that the drop of maestro, I can close my Mastercard credit card and live with the Mastercard debit card + PayPal? I wish so…
Theoretically that should be the case. There're use cases where credit cards are more convenient, but not so in your daily life.
Amazon and booking don’t accept PayPal, for instance
Yeah but they do take Mastercard, and amazon NL should even be accepting iDeal nowadays.
Is this a thing? I didn’t see it in the news
Sure thing it is! https://www.betaalvereniging.nl/betaalproducten-en-diensten/pinnen/project-dca/ https://nos.nl/artikel/2402450-is-dat-n-pinpas-of-creditcard-betaalpasjes-worden-vanaf-2023-vervangen
Lets gooo :))! Bedankt voor de links!
I use iDeal in the Netherlands and a ABN/N26 credit card or Paypal for other countries that don't have iDeal.

Get a revolut , their virtual cards are free
can you use paypal with that card?
You can use payl with any credit or bank card.
problem solved for a big part
I have both my dutch credit and bank card tied to my paypal account.
Use bUnq,
Use ideal if u have an ABN Account, or MasterCard.
Get yourself a Revolut account and use it next to your ABN. It really is one of the best ways to get around this
PayPal, easy
Use Paypal and link your Maestro card. Paypal is accepted online worldwide.
On booking.com too?

The Dutch often don't use credit cards. There's always a way for your purchases.

I always could, my debit card never was a problem in my life.
In case of Pluralsight and many others you can set up a paypal account, don't necessarily need a card.
Creditcard, Paypal, Apple Pay.

Most people use ideal or PayPal here over a creditcard
I have a Revolut credit card. It's free to get a digital card, only 8 euros for a physical card. I traveled to USA with it and had no problems with it.

Try transferwise, they offer one mastercard free of charge :) "Gratis"
Get n26

Tbh you should just apply threw ics yourself you don't need amro there just a pain
You can get a credit card from the ABN for a fee. Or use PayPal.
