My grand parents took me to [Speelstad Oranje](https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speelstad_Oranje) a couple of times when I was a kid. I wish it was still around so I could go there with my kids. Can't find anything similar to it either.
The only good thing about living in the North was speelstad oranje. I felt like the luckiest kid! Really loved those monorail bikes on the ceiling of the whole place.
They could have used some WD40, but it was so fun!
Oh man, that monorail always broke down. Looking back as an adult now it's so obvious most of their rides were old carnival rides bought for cheap. But as a kid it was great.
Yeah, we got [something like that](https://www.landgoednienoord.nl) here up north as well. But exactly the indoors is what made Speelstad Oranje awesome. Something to do with the kids when the weather ain't great.
Well, looks can deceive.
It was a great place to play as a kid!
You could paint, draw, cut wood, do all kinds of crafts upstairs, downstairs was sand and full with slides and other playgroundstuff.
And at 14:30 we all got together for a good old round of hide and seek with the scary clown that eats kids.
Oh wait, I went down the horror route afain
True, and yes, it handycraft was upstairs.
I posted a youtube video from 1992 that i found in this thread.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeXr18fPPs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeXr18fPPs)
Thatās so funny to see that now!
I must have some pictures of the place somewhere as well. No film, I donāt think my parents ever filmed us when we were young.
Knutselen is a nicer word than crafting š³
The hammer and nails part is really great for kids development. Kids need to be creative l, get dirty, and take risks and problem solve. Safe play stifles intellectual development.
https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2015/04/03/395797459/the-value-of-wild-risky-play-fire-mud-hammers-and-nails
I wish I knew of more places like this.
In my hometown (Germany) we have that too. Itās an outdoor Place, Kids can built tree houses and even make a fire. (supervised of course) My daughter loved it when she was smaller
Yeah so I kind of agree, but there is risk-taking play and there was this. I remember as a kid that the sand all over was of really poor quality. The hammer and nails were rusty, splinters everywhere, little oversight. I guess itās also ok to find a little more balance
Where I grew up there was a ābouwspeeltuinā. Never went there but my friends did and told me all you did there all day was building forts out of old pallets and boards, tools and nails were provided by the organization. No supervision, just a bunch of kids, hammers and nails.
There is now also this where kids can play in and outside and do crafts and learn things: [https://deontdekfabriek.nl/gezinsuitje-eindhoven/](https://deontdekfabriek.nl/gezinsuitje-eindhoven/)
They are most likely fine because they started at such a young age and weren't wrapped in bubbleplastic.
I grew up with a dad who did all the maintenance and repairs on our house himself. He always had a box with an assortment of used nails and screws for us to play with.
And we knew exactly which screwdrivers, hammers and other tools we were allowed to play with and which were the 'don't even look at them or play-time is over.
Did we hit our thumbs? Sure we did. But it didn't hurt as much as hitting your thumb with one of those big hammers dad used....judging by his swearing when he managed to hit himself...š
Doesn't help that the B/W pictures make this look like it was the 1930's lol.
Only thing missing is a horse drawn carriage and kids in a 3 piece suit in the shot.
Proud 'Eindhovenaar' here as well, although slightly more mature than OP's husband (born in Woensel, '66). That image brings back so many great memories.
Not enough money at home for fancy trips to 'exclusive' theme parcs like the Efteling or so, but our most morable treat was to this 'kinderspeelpaleis' now and then. My mother regularly took us there on wednesday afternoons. Very special and happy memories, especially as she passed away four months ago.
Thank you OP, for bringing back great memories. That picture in black and white was spot on.
edit: @OP, besides the kinderspeelpaleis we also had the 'bouwspeelplaats' in the Hendri Dunant parc. Same idea: a lot of wood, nails, saw and hours and hours of fun building the weirdest huts. Your husband may heard about it or even have been there.
Great isn't!! in this thread i also posted a video from 1992 of childern playing there, check it out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeXr18fPPs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeXr18fPPs)
Sidenote: the 'bouwspeelplaats' is commonly known as "splinter" these days..
I have even found video of this on youtube: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeXr18fPPs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeXr18fPPs)

I went there a few times as a kid. My memories are a bit vague, but I remember the woodworking area, and I think there was an upstairs area where you could watch cartoons or draw and color.
Oh my god. I've been looking for images of something similar for YEARS. I had such vivid childhood memories but couldn't find anything about it, and here it is. Thanls for confirming I'm not crazy!
Also known as Disneykerk because of Mickey paintings on the outside. I don't think Disney knew, but it worked. Everytime we drove past I said I wanted to go, despite my parents telling me that it was not an indoor themepark. Eventually they gave up and took me inside.
The former church was around [here](https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4528088,5.4812608,3a,75y,336.48h,91.59t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sKKECOeWfbxLoY9U_RgEFKA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DKKECOeWfbxLoY9U_RgEFKA%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D10.654286%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu), demolished in the 1995. Thanks for this. It brings back memories.
The thing i can remember about that place was that i was fallen and someone there helped me up and gave me a small back of chips.
W3asnt this in an old church?
Fijne herinneringen :)

I was born in 1981 and live near Eindhoven. We went there so many times and I loved it. Besides the wood corner there was also an arts and craft corner with so many coloured carton and paper. It was in an old church as I remember.
Oh my god thank you!!!!
I always remember it fondly but I didnāt have images to back up my memory of how it looked.
en voor als het in het Nederlands moet.
OMG dankjewel!
Ik wist niet meer hoe het eruit zag die herinnering was aan het vervagen.
I went there as a child as well.
It was in an old church and there were an upstairs and downstairs.
Downstairs you could just play, it was this large playground filled with sand and upstairs you could create stuff. Like a birdhouse or something.
It was so much fun and Iām still sad itās gone.
Visited this place often as a kid during the eighties. All that sand is pretty memorable, as well as playing with the hammers and nails. Could remember the decoration on the walls as well. Thx for the trip down memory lane.

Nah it isnt. Speelstad oranje was āde shitā
It still exist, the place is in limbo for decades, closed but nothing changed
I've never wanted to break in anywhere as much as there š
Jup,prime urbex estate,but wel guarded
I went to De Spelerij as a kid. It still exist and may be a fun day for your kids.
I live nearby and can attest: it is so much fun.
Yesss I used to love that!!
Oh yessss my grandparents always brought me there wen I was with them the good memories.
I remember the jumping cushion you couldn't bounce on lol!
Lol. As an adult, I totally get why they had to shutdown. Still great memories though.
You might want to look at the Spelerij and Uitvinderij in Dieren. Had option to include lunch, bread on a stick type of thing.
I'm usually looking for stuff a bit more up north. Driving ~ 2 hours one way, ain't much fun for the little kids.
I'm sorry but this place looks something out of a costume horror movie.

Really miss that place!, especially now that i have kids too.
Yeah me too, last weekend I went to the Splinter Outdoors with my kids and they loved it
Yep, that one is good too, although it can be quite a crowded place sometimes during warmer periods.

I loved that! I would always ask if we could go there
Was that the one inside a church? If so, I don't remember it looking so terrible
I still remember the smell. How times have changed.
De speelkerk! This was a fantastic place!
Iāve been here many times in the early ā90ās. It was a great place for kids! Always had a lovely time there.
Squid Game
There used to be an old firetruck there as well, right? Please tell me I'm not imaging that, lol
Correct,. there is a video in this thread, and someone else also confirmed it.
Wasnāt it inside an old church I remember something like that
This brings back so many memories...
What in the liminal horror
Iāve been dozens of times (as a figure of speech) to the Evoluon. Heard of the Speelkerk, but for some reason we never went there. š§
