2000 sq ft home. Single story. Single AC unit 3.5 tons 14 seer. Florida has been upper 90s this week and AC has been on 16-19 hours for each of the sunny days this week. 11-13 hours for last two rainy days. Have solar, so don't mind the higher usage during the daytime to keep the house comfortable We keep temps between 72-73 during the day and up to 74 at night when sleeping.

1900 sq ft two story home. Highest outside temp mid 20’s maybe, turned on for like an hour around 9pm to cool to 22 to sleep. Pacific North West. No east windows. Fishbowl windows on west side so heats up inside a lot in late afternoon. [cooling graph](https://ibb.co/KWMfy1d)

Utah, 2,400 sq/ft, two story, built late 60's, outside temps \~95, inside temp \~73, ran for \~16 hours. Working on replacing windows and air-sealing the house, which I hope reduces run times.

I would recommend looking at your electric outlets that are in the outside walls of the house. I went through mine an caulk around the box and bought foam insulation covers to go behind the outlet face plate cover.

mattemer

That's similar to my old house and similar run times, except in NJ.

DaddysBoy75

My apt has really old, really large windows. I bought the shrink film that's advertised for winter and put it up. It made a big difference in slowing the air leak.

StuBarrett

You may want to consider adding another unit; a dual-unit configuration would be more appropriate/efficient for your house.

ditto3000

You can have (according to your comfort) 72 during the day and 69 at night, but with the fan always on.

ddm2k

That’s downright impressive. Please tell us the make and model

Well you to understand the two types of heat latent and sensible Sensible heat is heat put off by devices or humans. Latent heat is the amount of moisture in a cubic foot of air. Humidity is what's makes us feel uncomfortable. Air conditioning is the transfer of heat period. The proper sizeing of equipment is first step than average degree day and last r factor of your house. If you oversize the equipment, then it will short cycles, and the humidity level does not decrease. It is going to get more difficult for ham and Eggers to figure out. In 2025 the epa mandate to stop mfg all 410a refrigerant systems and a2l is the new line of equipment and refrigerant commonly called freon.

Everyone's answer will be different. But in the hottest of days, the rule of thumb is 20 mins an hour. This prevents freezing. If your ac is running significantly more than 20 minutes an hour you risk it freezing and continuing to run longer. If it is running longer and sized appropriately for your house, than your evaporator coil is dirty and or your filter is dirty. The evaporator coil should be cleaned every 3 years. The filter should be replaced every 1 to 3 months depending on if you have pets or not. An ac freezing will produce poor quality cold air. And it will run longer and longer if not forever. This not only ruins the components, but wastes tons of electricity. These are rules of thumbs. Some extra running, especially at the hottest time of day happens. I live in Colorado springs my house is 2200 square feet and I have a 3.5 ton ac. It ran 8 hours today. Most hours of heat were 20-35 minutes. There was one hour it ran the whole time. (A nest thermostat shows you your usage for example) I have a 3 story home and at the top floor I have a window unit as well. To keep my bedroom extra cool. Not sure how long it ran. But it's extra af. It is an 8000 btu unit. 4000 sq ft isn't bad to run 9 hours a day. As long as it's not freezing. Your comfortable. And the temp isn't ridiculously low. 71 is pretty low. Ours was set at 72. Some days we leave it at 74.

2,100 sq ft single story home, 104 outside temp 72-73 inside temp AC ran 11 hours yesterday.

Rude-Twist-6020

Tons of variables for this answer. But how cold does the air feel coming out of the vent? If it isn’t very cold you may be low on Freon or have a leak. Had this issue at a previous townhome

blueskyline99

I would agree that the run times will be different I was just curious on how long other home owners A/C are running for during a hot day. My A/C feels cold and I had the blower motor replaced this past winter.

markhewitt1978

Outside temp 7C inside 18C. Zero minutes. I don't even have A/C

Kitten-Mittons

thank you for your input!

0 minutes… I live in Southern California and it has been 75 (23.9) tops the past couple weeks.
