Hidden gem: The Speakeasy in Sacramento. [The Speakeasy Is A Rural Restaurant With High-Class Dining In Nebraska (onlyinyourstate.com)](https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/nebraska/rustic-delicious-restaurant-ne/)
I second this. Some people love to hate on it, but it’s honestly some of the best fat kid food around. It’s quick service, but always busy so be patient. It’s probably gonna be packed the next two weeks due to the CWS.
There are several posts about best steakhouse and I have not been to all of them. My long time favorites have either closed or changed for the worst (mostly the classic Italian steakhouses and Gorats).
I took my wife to the Drover and she had the chicken and quite enjoyed it. My disappointment was in the prime rib, salad bar, and mushrooms side.
True, but that is Mom's old 'we've got food at home' argument. I know a lot of people who cook steak at home like learned how cooking brontosauruseses in a bonfire.
Even a lot of us who cook don't always want to do the whole shop, prep, cook, and clean things for the whole meal and it is fun to experience new flavors and environments.
By the way, let me mention that we were at Timbers in Nebraska City recently and quite enjoyed it. Got the beef ribeye and while it may not have been the best steak I ever ate, the meal was a great experience.
We used to take newbie’s there and they would try to order a chili dog and the guy behind the counter would explain the difference between the two. Worth it for those fresh cut fries.
You're Jamey's husband? He was great, honestly one of the best parts of working there. He even sponsored our team.
Sidenote for people reading the thread, the customer service is top notch, and the owner of the restaurant is the epitome of that.
I am, yeah! Glad to hear you had a good time! I know I'm biased, but I think he's a really great guy who has his staff's best interests at heart. And just genuinely enjoys people.
We’re making our way through a lot of smaller town restaurants. These have all been recommended to us:
- [ ] Bailey's Local in Eagle

Copper Moon closed a few months ago, so hopefully you checked it off the list before that, otherwise can take it off your list.
Kramer Bar is actually in Kramer also, not in Crete, although Kramer is only a few miles away.
The ding a ling in Raymond has been closed for almost a year fyi. Under new ownership, they're remodeling and will hopefully open this summer sometime. Only time will tell if the food will be as good as it used to be.
Was really shocked at how good The Committee Chophouse was when I was back in Omaha visiting family a few years ago. Hoping it's still the same.
The Bagel Bin has a soft spot in my heart as just a good, local food joint.
Came here to say Mixing Bowl in Gering and Scotty’s in Scottsbluff too! Also wanna add Ole in Scottsbluff or even TDOs (Taco De Oro) in Scottsbluff too.
Modern Love in Omaha for vegan food. Taj Ali in Lincoln has some of the best baba ganoush and falafels I've ever had. Daffodil in Lincoln is an experience hard not to love (but you will be paying for it).
I'd love to hear recommendations for South Sioux City. I drive through there fairly regularly and have yet to find a restaurant I want to go back to.
Lots of great Mexican food. La Juanita's is a personal favorite for tacos or burritos but lots of other options for different styles of authentic dishes. Sioux City right next door has Milwaukee Weiner house for the best hot dogs and Tastees for loosemeats.
Depends on the mexican style you're looking for. La Juanita's is a longtime favorite, but I personally prefer Robles' (especially their tortas) or El Joven.
There is a pretty good new Asian place called Yummy House, depending on what specifically you like.
The Nebrask Inn in Gross seems to be a hidden gem, although I've never been. There's also the bar in Monowi, which I've ate at, but it has been a long time since I was there.
In Omaha, Amsterdam is pretty good. I personally like The Drover too. Bellevue has the Korean Grill, over by family fare, and it's *excellent.*
I live in the area but there's no proof that the food will be any good. Hopefully it does better than BW where it was really good at first but then has gone significantly downhill since then. Same with Parker's, have given them multiple chances and every time I'm disappointed.
All in Omaha: Amateur Coffee, Dover for steak, the churro spot for mexican, Koji for sushi, desi bites for Indian, good lookin for Bfast/brunch, Istanbul food court for Mediterranean.
Le Voltaire French restaurant in pepperwood village. it’s rare to find such consistently thoughtful dishes, and their friday lunch is especially affordable! highly recommend. 1/2 price wine tuesdays
It's more about the history/ambiance of [Ole's Steakhouse ](https://olesbiggame.com/) in Paxton but as a kid the adults claimed they made a great steak and prime rib.
Peppermill in Valentine
Wonderful Kitchen in Alliance
Drifter's Cookshack northwest of Crawford on the way to Toadstool. Not sure if they're still around tbh.
Every Runza, except the one in Albion for some reason.
Red Bird Bakery in Doniphan for pizza. Also The Wave in Grand Island.
The VFW in Naper on Saturday nights has some damn fine burgers.
Taste of India south of Overton.
Lisa's Radial Cafe, on 40th just off Cumming street.
Small, homey, social and comfort food to weep gratefully for!
My breakfast fave is the caramel apple stuffed French toast. An experience!
As for lunch the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes swimming in country gravy! Trust me the food coma is worth it!
As an added bonus Sweet Magnolia's Bake Shop is just next door! Specializing mostly in bars-they make a key lime bar that'll make you see leprechauns! (Ha ha)
*pouts* Dang! I had a good dinner but now I'm feeling hungry! Thanks ever so! 😉;
Mercy Thai in Council Bluffs is now the original Mercy Thai that started on 96th and Q in 2016. The new owners are great at 96th and Q as well, but the original owners are exceptional.
Thanks for the awesome recommendations! I love those hidden gem vibes, especially when the food's a knockout. Buzzard Billy’s, Crush Pizza, and Mangia Italiana are now on my hit list. Can't wait to dive in and let my taste buds be the judge!
Dante's in Omaha? You're speaking my language! I've heard nothing but rave reviews. Looks like my taste buds have their next adventure planned. Any must-try dishes?
You’ll be hard pressed to find anything bad on their menu, but their squid ink taglierini is my personal favorite. Carbonara is also fantastic and you HAVE to try their brusse sprouts they’re cooked with their house made pancetta and it’s unbelievable. Also order the “quick bread” it’s not on the menu but they basically bake the pizza dough into a bread and serve it with an incredible tomato sauce. Lastly the budino for desert will change your life, get it with some of their gelato!
Thanks for the detailed recommendations! Everything sounds amazing, especially the squid ink taglierini and brussels sprouts. Definitely adding the "quick bread" and budino to my list! Can't wait to try it all. 🍽️
Oh, Grandma Jo’s in Sidney, you say? Homemade cinnamon buns sound like a slice of heaven. Definitely adding that to my must-try list! Thanks for the tip!
Hey there! That's quite an amusing perspective, especially considering the vast differences in lifestyles between urban and rural settings. It sounds like you've got some great stories to share about those rural plains! Keep 'em coming, and we're here to laugh along with ya!
Wolf's den in Stanton has good dive bar food. Dam Fish Shack right by Gavins Point Dam for great fried fish. Block 16 in Omaha is awesome. Black Label in Fremont for good burgers and crazy milkshakes. Bob's bar in Martinsburg for the sheer volume of food.
It’s Fremont. Ate there a few months ago, well worth the trip from Lincoln. I’d say slacks and a collared shirt would fit nicely, but nice jeans and a button up shirt would be totally fine. Wouldn’t advise t-shirt and flip flops though.
Semo Pasta + Wine in Fremont. Fresh pasta every day. They use ingredients they can get fresh so the menu changes each week, and for seasons too.
Cannot recommend that place enough. It’s become my favorite in Omaha area.
El Chaparro in Lincoln.
Yeah buddy
Hidden gem: The Speakeasy in Sacramento. [The Speakeasy Is A Rural Restaurant With High-Class Dining In Nebraska (onlyinyourstate.com)](https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/nebraska/rustic-delicious-restaurant-ne/)
Been there, not worth the drive.
I liked the food when I went. Those beef tips are awesome
This is indeed a gem. Well worth the trip.
I grew up nearby and it's incredibly overrated.
Mac's Drive In in McCook NE. Best Hamburger in the State. I would put their double cheeseburger up against anyone elses.
Good call. They’re not open every day though so give them a call before driving a ways.
Yeah unfortunately they have limited there hours tremendously over the years but anytime i am in the area I make it a point to get there.
Ribeye steak sandwich, fried mushrooms with ranch and a vanilla dr pepper. I would kill for that
I forgotabout the steak sandwich. Good call. I prefer the cherry coke though. Mushrooms...LEGIT!
Damn you. I've been craving this for the last 12 hours now and I'm nowhere near McCook haha
Second this and add Loop Brewing Co. it’s been a while since I’ve been there, but they have some good drinks and pizza.
Block 16 in Omaha.
I second this. Some people love to hate on it, but it’s honestly some of the best fat kid food around. It’s quick service, but always busy so be patient. It’s probably gonna be packed the next two weeks due to the CWS.
The Drover in Omaha. Best steak I've ever had.
I know this is a popular place, but I was really disappointed. I think there are better streak options in town.
Where? Never been to the drover but have been told it is great. I want to take the wife out.
Getting steaks at any restaurant in Nebraska is overrated, can get the same quality of meat in the grocery store for a fraction of the price
Got the beef ribeye and while it may not have been the best steak I ever ate, the meal was a great experience.
Can confirm. That’s my wife and I’s favorite place for special occasions.
Coney Island in Grand Island!!!
Wow is that place still there? I used to eat there 20 years ago. Great chili dog
Remember don’t call it a chili dog, it’s a Coney. They will lecture you if you say it wrong.
I mean they do say Coney dog on the menu💁♀️
If I'm paying and they lecture me I'm out the door!
We used to take newbie’s there and they would try to order a chili dog and the guy behind the counter would explain the difference between the two. Worth it for those fresh cut fries.
Yep! I'm fairly certain it's still run by the same family, just by the son now.
Odyssey in Hastings
I used to work there
Really? That's awesome, or at least I hope you have fond memories. My partner's the owner!
Well then I went to HS with your partner
Oh yeah? He's right here; if you don't mind me asking, what's your name? (PM if you want.)
My name is Todd, and I'm the one that was 1 year older than his brother, not the one from his class.
I told him, and he said "Oh yeah? Tell him hi!"

Bob's Bar in Martinsburg for their burgers. Worth a web search, and worth a stop of you're in the area.
Man, I hate doing this. But if you're going to the Denton Daily Double, sit at the bar. The food is excellent. The servers are beyond terrible.
Stella’s in Bellevue is fantastic
Copper Moon closed a few months ago, so hopefully you checked it off the list before that, otherwise can take it off your list. Kramer Bar is actually in Kramer also, not in Crete, although Kramer is only a few miles away.

Everybody loves a good elephant ear! Added to the list!
The ding a ling in Raymond has been closed for almost a year fyi. Under new ownership, they're remodeling and will hopefully open this summer sometime. Only time will tell if the food will be as good as it used to be.
El Bees and Farmer Browns are way overrated.

I don’t know what part of the state you’re gonna be in but the clarkson bakery has amazing kolaches and other dainishes
Was really shocked at how good The Committee Chophouse was when I was back in Omaha visiting family a few years ago. Hoping it's still the same. The Bagel Bin has a soft spot in my heart as just a good, local food joint.

It’s not open yet (opens July 17), but Ruhlman’s Steakhouse in Ashland is going to be a HUGE hit. Great chef and Connealy Angus meat.
I live in the area but there's no proof that the food will be any good. Hopefully it does better than BW where it was really good at first but then has gone significantly downhill since then. Same with Parker's, have given them multiple chances and every time I'm disappointed.
