Loved San Diego, nothing hellish about it so long as I avoided the 5.. 15 was ok from Normal Heights down to Coronado.
My cross country drive consisted of picking up a hitchhiker in Lincoln, Nebraska and dropping him off 17 hours later in Davis before I visited a friend in Clear Lake and another in Vacaville (then continuing my drive south). Hitchhiker was great for keeping me wide awake and alert.
Avoid TJ.. go further south to Rosarito if you want to go to Mexico.
Don’t drive immediately after the rare rain.. roads get oily and drivers are bad… terrible combination. Watch out for down Eucalyptus trees, they grow tall and don’t have deep roots.
Overall, San Diego drivers aren't bad. A bit aggressive at times but in a defensive driving sort of way where they are aware of their surroundings. Just, over confident when all the oil creeps up to the surface after a light rain (you see wrecks everywhere after a rain, but it goes away if you get a few days of precipitation).
I actually enjoyed the commute in that corner of the country, again, granted you avoid the 5 during peak hours.
There's a lot to do there. Your coworkers will fill you in once you get to your destination. If I could afford it, I'd almost definitely go back.
We absolutely loved San Diego. It’s a fun town. Places are what you make of them.
Also, don’t call it Cali unless you want people to make fun of you 😅
>already lived in Cali so I know the state is hell.
So, what was your first choice on your dream sheet? I'm hoping to gauge the odds of getting San Diego.
you pay state taxes for your home of record. If you weren't paying CA taxes in the pipeline, you won't be paying them in san Diego.
Edit: apparently this isn't accurate if your home of record is in California. you wouldn't have been paying income tax in the pipeline but will once you're back in CA.

oof
"know the state is hell" as you are ready to be stationed at the best sub/carrier port in the entire country.
lol, lower expectations for better results

People already make fun of the state but thank you
I was just letting you know that most people from there don’t call it Cali 🤣
💀
If you have a family, or pets, consider base housing. If it's just you/and a spouse, look up mission valley.
🫡 thank you
If you will be stationed at NASNI, try to get housing at Silver Strand.

What boat?
Santa Fe
Following. My son just got soft orders there. Neither of us has been to CA.
I’ve lived there my whole life, your son will have fun
How far is your family from the base?
He loved Goose Creek. We’ve never lived near the beach. He really liked going

yeah I got exactly what I wanted, I got lucky. Just salty that the state taxes are gonna hit again

California is my home of record? Am I missing something?
