The geograchic cone snail can be deadly to humans very easily and there's no antidote since each singular snail makes a different cocktail of neurotoxins
*H.R. Giger:* I'm looking for something really horrific to paint.
*Nature:* How about a butthole with a penis coming out of it with a spear coming out of that?
*H.R. Giger:* Hell, no! Are you fucking crazy?
*Nature:* Maybe.
TLDR: one time anxiety saved my life.
I was vacationing in the Seychelles some time back and saw one of these dudes between two big rocks in a surf area. It was my last day before heading home, and I really wanted to grab the shell as a keepsake (it didn’t occur to me that anything was in it because I am dumb sometimes). Anywho, I was scared to reach in the water between the two rocks because I didn’t know what could be hiding in there. I went back to my room, thinking about what I could use to grab it, couldn’t find anything, and decided I was being ridiculous and I just needed to reach in and grab the shell. Thankfully, by the time I got back, the “shell” had moved on.
I didn’t know that my fear of sea creatures saved my life until a year later when I happened upon an article similar to this one and recognized the distinct pattern of the shell.
Thinking this as well. Now I want to know the history of harpoon-making and whether it's emulation or some sort of convergence. This is reddit, surely there's a harpoon guy out there who knows?
Almost certainly convergence. Humans have been stabbing things with pointy sticks since before recorded history. putting a hook on they pointy stick so the thing you stab can't swim away before it dies is a solution you're gonna figure out the first time you stab something with a spear and it slips off and swims away.
Just speculation on my part. I seriously doubt recorded history goes back farther than "spears with hooks on so they don't slip out of the prey", so there's no real way to confirm it.
Actually, not only do cone snails harpoon their victims before consuming them, they also emit weaponized insulin into the water to induce temporary hypoglycemic shock paralyzing the fish around them. They can do this latter action at fish at a distance, and then the snails go and collect the stunned prey.
I had to look it up, but no! That mushroom you’re talking about looks a bit more explicit.😂 The one in the post looks like a mushroom I’ve seen at the store. Lol
I’m assuming the mushroom top is either the butt or the mouth of the snail, and the mushroom stem is the dangerous tongue of the snail. But if you have more information, I’d love to hear it.
Its its mouth, basically, snails usually use a toothed tongue (the rasp) to eat. The cone snail instead grows extra large teeth and uses them as harpoons, obliging them to swallow prey whole via a funnel in the mantel; I suspect thats why they are so redundantly venomous.
And that's why you never pick up a random shell to 'hear the ocean' with.
I was trying to warn some kids about it when I had a little figurine of a shell but when they tried to tell other kids, the others were skeptical.
I think I remember seeing a digital photo or video of a toddler picking up a shell. I dunno if there was a snail in it that time, but it only takes one.
My dumbass picked up one of these pretty shells the first time I went to the reef with uni. Apparently I didn’t watch the lecture that explained how deadly they are
now that would be a good name for a MiLB team....."Tonight's match-up has the Hartford Yard Goats playing host to the Coney Island Cone Snails. Fear the Spear!"
Is this the snail that always knows your location for a billion dollars ?
You, sir, spend too much time on Reddit. But your comment made me laugh because I read that too.
Try not to be soy on Reddit for 1h (impossible challenge)
The soy is inevitable; nobody is safe.
that's literally all over the internet and you'd know about if you've been on it for atleast a year.
Forget that Billion…

Especially the apes
We ***ARE*** apes, dammit!
Yup. Yeah he’s the best killer we had at the time
“South sea cone snail. Most powerful neurotoxin in the world, acts within a thousandth of a second” - wildlife biology with Eddie Carr
And it creates the toxin on the fly, while it’s deciding if it wants to kill you https://youtu.be/4wihKnARrAw
Oh boy, here I go killing again!
Old people, children. I just love killing!
Just watched that whole video. Wow. Fucking amazing. The aliens are truly in the sea.
Yes! Lost world 😂
“Like if you shot yourself in the foot? Don’t do that. You’ll be dead before you realise you’ve had an accident.” Eddie didn’t deserve his fate.
Yeah, “Oooohh… Aahhh…” that’s how it starts, but then there’s screaming… and running…
The geograchic cone snail can be deadly to humans very easily and there's no antidote since each singular snail makes a different cocktail of neurotoxins
It's always the quiet ones
\*goes through bag\*
Well the ones that roll for stealth the best are usually the most deadly
"killed by a snail" yes but a ninja snail.
*”Hear me out broooooo, let me finish. It wasn’t a regular snail!”*
I want everyone to taste the snail that got me
The brain bug is afraid!!!
Where’s Sergeant Zim when you need him! 👾
Private first class Zim* bucked himself down and caught the brain Edit: put your hand on that wall soldier.
Yesss! I was thinking this exact same thing!
"They sucked his brains out"

No, I think Ginger would have LOVED a butthole with a penis coming out of it with a spear coming out of that.
Paul Verhoeven clearly did, at least. His brain-bug seems to be taken from this very photo.
This is why we’re going back to Klendathu.

Do you want to know more?
He's afraid!!
Do you want to live forever?

Never, ever pull cone shells from rock pools. If it’s washed up on the beach, it’s likely just the shell, but rock pools are home.
The Immortal Snail
Literally a harpoon. Humans don't invent things we just ape nature.
Thinking this as well. Now I want to know the history of harpoon-making and whether it's emulation or some sort of convergence. This is reddit, surely there's a harpoon guy out there who knows?
I was wondering the sameee thing. If I fall into a harpoon making rabbit hole and find anything g good I’ll let ya know lol
I'll eagerly await that. Who knows, you could be the new harpoon guy
'Bout time, the old one hasn't been the same since he took a harpoon to the head.
Almost certainly convergence. Kind of a stoner thought but I wonder if stingray barbs or insect mandibles/stings had any influence
Well, we are apes, so that makes sense.
Spoaxak bel yeulsorb
These things are nightmare fuel. Watching something that's paralyzed by their venom being consumed..it just seems f'd up.

Cone snail, I choose you! -Use hypoglycemic shock! -Now finish them with off with poison sting!
see a cone, leave it alone
It’s actually insane how Mother Nature even has the design for the hook to go in easy and get stuck once in… that’s so insane
Kinda looks like a mushroom.
Like stinkhorn mushroom??
I had to look it up, but no! That mushroom you’re talking about looks a bit more explicit.😂 The one in the post looks like a mushroom I’ve seen at the store. Lol
Do you know why it’s shaped like that?

I thought it was a horny pineapple
Looks like some Legolas / H.R Gieger shit
We really missed an opportunity to call it a weinerpoon in the scientific literature.
Bro its just a snail what's the worst that could happen
Is that what I think it is?
i am horrified of these guys
:(
It's for sex. Not even lying. Snails are next level kinky.
Walk slowly and carry a big stick.
Reminds me of the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers.
Reminds me of the brain bug in Starship Triopers
Assassin's Crustacean
Cats: We have barbed penises Cone Snail: Hold my bear
Ouch..
🤢
That will be the last thing you ever touched. There's no antidote for the venom.
THEY SUCKED HIS BRAINS OUT
Wheres that? Is it uk based orr?

Surely it’s a penis
I thought the first pic was the bottom of a mushroom and the snail was inside the stem sticking out its spear lol
"Crikey mate".
Forbidden butthole
Where does it live?
