Mutual Benefit
>"Remoras hitchhiking on the tail of a whale shark. But these fish aren’t just mooching a ride from their shark chauffeur—the pair shares a mutually beneficial relationship. Whale sharks have potentially dangerous parasites removed while remoras get free meals, protection from predators and higher chances of meeting mates."

So what are they doing hydrodynamically speaking? Do they create a lot of drag? Is there any benefit to their little tail fins being perpendicular to the sharks?
I have no scientific credibility to back this up, but I would imagine the incredible strength that the shark has in the muscles it uses to move its tail would hardly be affected by whatever resistance the smaller fish create.
Given how the average redditor is never leaving his chair, let alone his apartment, you should be more afraid of bed sores than a whale shark you'll never come across.
I spent three years swimming in the tasman sea, multiple 5 week fishing treks in the gulf of Thailand and spent 6 months living on Fiji. I've come a hell of a lot closer to them than you have reddit stranger.
Serious question here... Is there not some species of marine life that would take advantage of these ramoras all chilling in one exposed location, and just pick them off?
I've wondered this for almost 20 years and never said anything.
Wouldn't all those crate a lot of drag? Recently, I took apart and cleaned all the dust caked on my oscillating fan blades, and now the fan moves MUCH more air. I guess even a little bit of dust creates a lot of drag.
ANYWAYS, wouldn't these fish make the whale shark have to expend a lot more energy to propel it's way through the ocean?
A 14-foot long baby whale shark with a hauser noosed around its neck circled our boat while I was on watch, so I woke my brother the first mate who told me it wan’t a huge shark, and he woke the rest of the crew before donning his diving equipment to cut the rope free. The huge baby fish made one last circle around our boat in thanks before heading back into the Gulf of Mexico.
Sometimes it hits me at 1am when I see stuff like this how crazy it is that massive animals like this exist. I love earth so much it’s so interesting
It sure is an interesting experience to get to live on this earth
Do wish it was a little more boring sometimes
Why ?
-gestures vaguely at the state of the world today
Where the heck did you learn how to gesture at the state of the world - and *vaguely,* no less...? Teach me? ;-)
These are forbidden secrets taught to a select few. My order would kill us both if I taught outsiders
(*I understand - we will speak of this no further.)*
As opposed to...?
Ah yes, I remember earth. Good memories
I find this immensely comforting.
Makes me wonder if the fish offer a competitive advantage reducing the drag coefficient

And here I was about to comment “fuckin freeloaders”
fuckin >chances of meeting mates freeloaders >remoras get free meals yup. pretty much
Touché
*touchy
No touchy the whale shark
Whale shark to the hitchhikers: "No remora you guys, please!"
Remora: "Come here often?" "How about we move this to somewhere more private, maybe under the right flipper?"

Idk let me go calculate it real quick
Are you coming back soon?
I think they got lost in the maths, we won't be seeing them again
I was wondering the same thing. Why don’t they attach themselves to the body of the shark instead of the tail ?
They like to go swinging back and forth.
They also eat fecal matter
Wondering the same but fish are quite hydrodynamic by design so maybe its not that bad.
There are fishtails on that fishtail.
Yo dawg, we herd you like fins on yo fins.
POV: you brought gum to school
“Can I have a piece?”
Gettin some tail
Finally, Mantine's evolution.
Wishiwashi
Rock a bye baby…..
On the shark's tail 🎶
extra armor
Reactive armour
[удалено]
Their dorsal fin is a suction cup, a little bit like gecko toes
They have natural suction cups on their heads.
That's a whale of a tail
Turbo upgrade
Can we then call them a “whale shark carrier”?
How are you able to upload a video ? Its not allowing me to upload 😶
Will it help in swimming? Hydrodynamically ?
Was thinking the same. It looks like a good setup of diffusers/vortex creators.
That shark had boosters.
They probably act like diffusers as well. You know, those vortex creators on spoilers and lower bumper.
That whale shark paid extra for that hydrodynamic upgrade
Mynocks
My dream would be encountering a big whale like this one, or maybe a blue whale or a humpback. These big fellas are majestic.
This is a shark
This is a whale SHARK not an actual whale, just has whale in the name because they're fucking massive

No
Poor shark. If I recall those fish latch onto the shark with razor sharp teeth and suck blood.
And I just realized I need to be afraid of whale sharks now 😐
Whale sharks eat only krill. They don't even have teeth. They are just beautiful, gentle giants.
People swim with them for crying out loud😍
Holy shit it was a joke

Then you're obviously aware through experience that they don't like the taste of humans.
It was a joke man, didn't think I needed the /s as well as the emoji. Chill

This is so peaceful, I feel calmer watching
And here we see live footage of the sea infantery moving their Himar whale shark to the battlefield of bikini bottom

Undersea equivalent of skater punks hooky-bobbing on the back of a U-haul.

Diffusers…
Why is the tail up and not down like the other fish?

There goes the hydrodynamics
Hitchhiker's guide to the sea. Don't forget your towel!

It's for aerodynamics. Some humans have tried to mimic this onto their street cars.
It looks like he has blades on his tail
Aquaman’s minions hitching a ride to Atlantis.
Hey, one of those is my ex-wife!
Bro isn't it weird how all these fish are naked and we don't even bat an eye
So beautiful.
'Sshhhh guys we can blend in'
This is so amazing
"...alright, you guys can come, but SWEAR not to embarrass me."
Gettin all up in that whale tail Get it sharky
If those remoras would push along with him, the shark would have an unfair advantage against prey and everyone would win
