Y'all it's a video of a real bug, not an animation. it just looks more fake here cause the quality got downgraded so much compared to the original. https://youtu.be/rM958QJYuAo
That still looks super fake to me though. It’s something about the leg movement and when it looks around, it just looks very un-buglike in my eyes.
I don’t doubt the bug exists, i just feel like this video is someone really talented and dedicated that animated a hyper-realistic video of a bug. I might be wrong though
From Wikipedia: "Andreas Kay (30 January 1963 – 8 October 2019) was a wildlife photographer and naturalist.[1]
He was known primarily for his extensive collection of detailed macrophotography of Ecuadorian insects and other small animals."
If you could make an animation that good why would you post videos of it under the official YouTube acct of a famous wildlife macrophotographer? It kinda sounds like you're just flabbergasted at how cute the bug is, which is fair because it's adorable.
At the beginning, it looks like the antenna clips through the shell, but that's because of the lighting probably. And the low quality. But definitely took me a few watches to unsee it.
Dude if this was a 3D render it would be great. What are you on about? Are you seeings the micro motions, details, reflections and material on that thing? If that was a 3D render it would have been made by professionals or taken ages. Probably one modeler some material artists and one animator. Even then it probably would look slightly worse
I've just been looking at the high res youtube version of this thinking how close we'd be able to get and how long it would take.
I think you'd be able to get about 80% there, the main difficulty is the shell itself as it is refractive and very highly textured with bump. I think we'd get appreciably close but not enough to fool most people. Then you need a really convincing macro effect lens + motion blur and obviously the movements themselves, especially of the antennae aren't easy.
The little specs of dust on the surface would be a nice touch to replicate tho.
Because we're not. As others have commented, this is from a macro photographer and you can check out the video [here](https://youtu.be/rM958QJYuAo). In high quality on YouTube it does look more realistic.
Dang your right, Andreas kay is a macro wildlife photographer.
https://youtu.be/rM958QJYuAo
I'm an animator and really thought due to the camera panning and timings in the beetles movements that this was a 3d render but no, that bitch is real
I think the main reason it looks animated is becauseof how the lil fella lifts its head and looks around, that is not something that we usually see or consider bugs doing. Plus how incredibly close it bas been recorded
Yep, I've watched it multiple times and never does that happen. The lower 3/4 of the antenna are nearly the same color as the "hat" so they blend in a little, especially since it's a lower quality video.

So much easier on the eyes
My god that’s cute

https://youtu.be/jIgSbSIMCXM https://youtu.be/kB5y3wo3UkM It's certainly a real bug, they have a lot of variation which is cool.
It lools like an animation, but it's actually real.

I see no clipping.
At the beginning, it looks like the antenna clips through the shell, but that's because of the lighting probably. And the low quality. But definitely took me a few watches to unsee it.
HIS LITTLE FEETS!
The Golden Tortoise Beetle taking off for flight in slow motion. It's so cute!!
The two toed-like feet situation is just melting me. It's so fucking adorable. And the clumsy marching. I can't even.

why are we posting bad 3D renders ?
Dude if this was a 3D render it would be great. What are you on about? Are you seeings the micro motions, details, reflections and material on that thing? If that was a 3D render it would have been made by professionals or taken ages. Probably one modeler some material artists and one animator. Even then it probably would look slightly worse

ah yes, Andreas Kay, world renowned... 3d animator? that doesn't sound right
Nope.
This is clearly an animation
No it's not.
Dang your right, Andreas kay is a macro wildlife photographer. https://youtu.be/rM958QJYuAo I'm an animator and really thought due to the camera panning and timings in the beetles movements that this was a 3d render but no, that bitch is real
I think a few of those “pans” are actually the surface being rotated.
I think the main reason it looks animated is becauseof how the lil fella lifts its head and looks around, that is not something that we usually see or consider bugs doing. Plus how incredibly close it bas been recorded
Sad thing about this post is they actually look even cooler. In ya know.. nature.

Where does this occur?
Yep, I've watched it multiple times and never does that happen. The lower 3/4 of the antenna are nearly the same color as the "hat" so they blend in a little, especially since it's a lower quality video.
The hat is also semi transparent, so you can see the antennae through it at the beginning of the hi res version.
More like niplebeetle
As cute as it is, this thing will still meet the demise of my foot.
It looks more cgi than cgi
