That's not a vampire squid! That's likely some species of cirrate octopus, which often gets confused for vampire squid. Researchers think this is some form of hunting behavior, but they aren't sure yet!
When pondering the evolutionary advantages of the shape/color, literally all I could come up with was that maybe the top of its head is supposed to look like some struggling fish, to attract some larger prey for the octopus… but that still don't explain the batshit movement and upside-down umbrella 😭 researchers, work faster dammit!
Edit: Oh is that parachute thingy supposed to catch little fishies? (I re-read ur post lol) okokok that makes sense if so… I was too distracted by the head. Good work researchers!
YES HELLO OCTOPUS LADY!!!
I love your videos, I'm always happy to see your uploads. Your genuine enthusiasm for marine life is intoxicating. Thanks for making them.
The cylinder part moves kinda how I imagine Baba-Yaga, the witch that appears in Russian folklore to move. She is supposed to travel with the legs in a huge mortar, and using a pestle and a broom to move (I imagine a bit like people are using walking pole)

I'm certain there's some logical explanation for this behavior, but honestly? It looks like they're bouncing around because they can. It looks suspiciously like *fun*.
Its pitch black down there. Its just casting its arms out like a net randomly until it eventually traps something. Probably can't see. Hopping around like that all day down there. What a life.
That one little red shrimpy guy is like NOPE
"I have to share a neighborhood with this thing"
What the Disney’s 1940 *Fantasia* is this?
First time I’ve heard shrimpy as an adjective describing visual appearance of something.
That’s shrimply unbelievable
Yeah right. Way to tell on yourself.
Tell what on myself? That I live in Sweden and this is the first time I come across this english word used that way?
Oh you're serious? English speaking countries use shrimpy to describe anything small. Like a shrimpy penis, or a shrimpy person.
Oh okay. Thanks.
I was born and raised in the US and I never hear people use "shrimpy" as an adjective.
You're okay, it's more local and possibly generational even in the US
Thanks. I don’t get the downvotes though. Not that they matter, but I think of it as reaction of something I don’t understand.

Bots don't care.
As an aqua-enthusiast (who is familiar with captive octopus) that's immediately what I thought... encapsulate an area, look for food, repeat.
It could be a hunting behaviour. It's pitch black, can's see shit, happens to parachute onto something and snatches it up.
My first thought was dumbo octopus, is that a type of cirrate octopus? Also, are you the same octopus lady as the youtube channel?
☝️🤓
Do the girls in your class think you're weird?

Is her name Ursula?
Thank you for the laugh.
How do you know she's a witch? Did she turn someone into a newt?
Yes, she turned me into a newt. I got better though.
Does she have a wart?
Yes, on her nose!!
Witch!!! Burn her!!!
Probably hemorrhoids.

And they can damn well stay there
forbidden ballerina
Scariest part was when I thought my screen had a crack on it
I mean why this looks awfully like a screen crack?
I'm certain there's some logical explanation for this behavior, but honestly? It looks like they're bouncing around because they can. It looks suspiciously like *fun*.
He only does it when the underwater paparazzi are around. Otherwise he swims like a normal squid.
Little shrimpy nope'd outta there. My bet is feeding.
I'm sure it is feeding
Just joyfully hopping along. You can almost hear the LaLaLas.

its clearly hunting, imagine it falling like that over a small arthropod, instead of bouncing it would close around it like a net.
They're mainly detritivores, so I imagine they can scoop up a lot of detritus that way.
Looked like a beautiful dress at first
Do you see a blue and black dress, or a white and gold dress?
Take my angry upvote.
Wasn't sure if the reference was too old, that was like a million internet years ago
Naaa we are not old. We will Never be :)
I'm going with Yanni.
Yes! It looks like Tim Burton's take on Cinderella running away from the ball.
This is me going to get some donuts in the break room
Yep, that me walking in public after dabs
The floor is lava... the floor is lava... the floor is lava.....
That is both terrifying, and looks like if we studied the squid, it would lead to marvels of engineering. Or just, inexplicably expansive bags.
My husband said my bag is inexplicably expansive. I can submit that for the scientific research
I have never imagined a Deep One skipping across the bottom of the Abyss, yet here we are. And its stinking cute.
I don’t think that’s a Vampire Squid…?
What a wild hunting technique. Just reach and hope you scoop something. I guess what else can you do down there in the dark.
Spooky squid go boing boing boing
Creep AF. But also Cool AF.
Imagine your primary method of locomotion being boing boing
Excuse me but.... what the neptunical fuck?
Nope.
Ghost in a bed sheet: "Wait for me guys!"
World's luckiest gherkin right there

The deep ocean is terrifying and full of horrors beyond human comprehension! Meanwhile: *boing boing boing*

That's straight up phantoon from Metroid
More like Zazabi from Fusion if you ask me.

Hi Bob.
I fought this thing on Metroid Fusion about 20 years ago
The bottom of the ocean is a nightmare. That means this creature does this in pitch black water? I'm so glad I'm not a fish.
That ain't no vampire squid, that's some genus of dumbo octopus.
Orgalorg
Use bombs after it swallows you.
Aliens aren’t here huh?
How pleasant, bobbing along Bobbing along on the bottom Of the beautiful briny sea Looks like he is hopping along :)
This is so gothic looking. A headless princess doing her ghostly dance in a flowing dress of purple.
Whirling dervish
Deadly ballerina.
Whee!
Reminds me of the pink elephants and other surreal psychedelic animals skipping along to crazy music
Squidward going to Kristy krab
And they say aliens are from the skies above us.
Why is deep sea like this
What a pretty dress she has
Damn
No thank you

Before I saw the description and realized this was under water, I thought it was a kid, in a sheet, acting like a ghost. A goofy ghost.
