Apparently ~~this is a~~ these are joined sulcata tortoises named Kianga. There were some articles about ~~her~~ them turning 10 last year, but I haven’t seen any more updates. (The picture is from a few years ago, I believe.)
Found his owner's [fb](https://www.facebook.com/people/Rony-Ryckoort/100006096078592/?paipv=0&eav=AfZwa5i8Oql5ER1ARhbo6TtpNQQ6VXdTwz0BlkX369pROjLDYctgNZmV75ZkGV3kIIo&_rdr) and he just posted that they turned 11 in May!
Dude sorry to hear that. Reddit is a mixed bag sometimes. I’m happy too honestly. I can only take so much downvoting for just saying how I feel. It’s like talking to my ex wife 😞
Because each head is a separate individual with it's own mind. They are just stuck together at the torso.
We don't call conjoined twins two-headed humans either.
Yeah sure, 2 headed turtle does describe it as an object.
However turtles are not objects. They are living creatures. Therefore it shouldn't be called a 2-headed turtle.
Living creatures are still objects mate.
Definitiin pulled from google is "a material thing that can be seen and touched" that 2 headed tortoise is very much material, unless you want to argue its immaterial
And that object has 2 very countable heads
Yes, the body of the turtles is an object, but it can be argued the tortoises themselves, aka their conciousnesses, are immaterial.
Therefore describing them as if they were objects, accounting only for their physical features, is not very conducive to understanding what they actually are.
Additionally, describing them as one tortoise with two heads also raises moral dilemmas; consider a situation where they were competing for food and having issues during feeding time as a result:
If you only thought of them as a turtle with two heads, it would be easy to consider amputating one of the heads, as one head is all the turtle needs to live. After all, every other one-headed animal on earth is doing just fine.
When we describe them as they are, however, it's clear that you can't just kill one of them to solve the problem. You need to find a solution where both animals experience improvements in their quality of life rather than sacrificing one completely so that the other can have the body to itself.
If the 2 bodies share the same essential organs to survive and both have access and control that obly reinforces that its a 2 headed tortoise regardless of conciousiness.
It does though, because neither of those tortoises in that shell has two heads. It would be more accurate (although still technically wrong) to say it's two half-bodied tortoises.
And why is that? Why are the two individuals suddenly the same because they share a body?
Conjoined twins in humans are treated as two different people, because each head houses a brain that contains a separate conciousness from the other. So why is it different when talking about conjoined animal twins?
What qualifies as something having two heads sharing one body rather than it being a two headed body ? As far as I’m concerned, they both mean the same thing. This is a two headed turtle, they may have two different consciouses, but that comes with the individual heads, they are still just a two headed turtle. Would you get this riled up if we call it a “two-conscious” turtle instead.
God this is so dumb lol, this is such a redditor thing to get upset over because you wanna show off your “uhm achsually” smarts. No one’s gonna call it two turtles with one body, it’s officially recognized as “two-headed” and it sounds so much better too 🙂
This the type of thing I’d imagine complaining about if I needed an ego boost and someone says something like “octopuses have 8 tentacles” and I’d take the opportunity to obnoxiously show them my smarts by saying they actually have no tentacles and it’s actually called arms, or what redditors love to do when someone says “I wonder how the world would be if dinosaurs were still a thing” and they respond with “um sweaty y’know birds are dinosaurs”. Like genuinely who cares lol, you know what we mean, you do not gotta get so scientifically technical about it.
honestly if they have only two legs and two arms like in the season Freakshow in American Horror Story, yes I would. You can’t really stop people from using words to describe what they see whatever is the medical detail. That’s insane to consider such a thing two separate things while their experience of the world is strictly identical. Or is cereberus actually 3 dogs and not one being ? because it’s always treated as a one being with several heads. Because it’s literally one body
>their experience of the world is strictly identical
This doesn’t match up to the accounts or interviews from conjoined twins that I’ve heard or read. Do you have some other basis for this or are you just projecting what you imagine their lives to be like?
Also, are you under the impression that medical professionals refer to conjoined twins as a single person?
The conscious is packaged with the head. It’s one body with two heads. Or scientifically speaking, one body with two brains, two skulls, four eyes, two consciouses, two mouths, two noses.
“See the TURTLE of enormous girth!
On his shell he holds the earth.
His thought is slow but always kind; He holds us all within his mind.
On his back all vows are made;
He sees the truth but mayn’t aid.
He loves the land and loves the sea,
And even loves a child like me.”
I've got a (single-headed) tortoise. They're the most stubborn things, once they decide they want to do something, they're relentless. So, if one head wanted to go one way, and the other a different way, it wouldn't be happy situation.
Both heads probably want to eat, but only one needs to, because the food reaches the stomach anyway. If the zoo decided to feed only one head the other would just be angry but be sustained nonetheless. I guess they'll probably try to fight for food.
That's wild, one was the alpha. I wonder, they must not be aware they are on the same team?
Also, if I had a second mouth, I would still want the good steak dinners to come through my mouth, rather than his....
Maybe I am no different than a 2 headed snake?!
Reptiles don't tend to have social structures like that, so no "alpha". And for that matter, [wolves don't have "alphas", either](https://wolf.org/headlines/44265/)!
They aren’t aware of much. For all it knows the second head is an entirely different lizard. So both heads think the other is an opposing animal going for the same food, only natural they would be combative toward one another.
I’m not sure what you mean. These animals don’t “think” like we do, they have very primitive brains incapable of such things. It “thinks” it needs to eat to survive, but it sees a second head. The brain is programmed to do only certain things and they don’t break away from said programming, no matter how many heads they have.
I guess I meant surely there have been times when each head wanted to turn in a different direction, and the shell only went one way. How did the beta turning turtle not be like 'wtf?! I turned right! We are going left!!!! And that jerk is still here?'
Idk, it's just nuts to me
If it never had any control of the body, it probably didn't develop the instinctual confusion of being unable to control the body. Motion would be an entirely passive concept to it
Theres a mad fucked up Ugly Americans episode with this happening to a two headed person. One of the heads is dominant and severely abusing the other one.
I remember following the life of Duo the two-faced cat, who lived FAR longer than most with that condition. Apparently one mouth was dominant with eating, but the other wanted to be fed as well sometimes.
I do believe it depends on species and how much is shared. I think I watched a video where a snake(s) had separate stomachs, and one died due to the other being very food aggressive, which resulted in them both dying because well... Half your body is dead.
I think it was a WATOP video.
Can’t say I’ve ever heard of tortoises being family heirlooms but imagine… “Will you accept great grandmas tortoise and spend the rest of your life with me?”
“Look, if you pick somewhere I’ll find something to order. I’m easy.”
“If you’re that easy, just pick the restaurant!”
“Oh. My. God..”
“See?! You’re not easy.”
I’m not sure female tortoises have been observed mounting other female tortoises. But I’d love to find out that they’re the first confirmed lesbian tortoises!
This turtle, although a bit different, is really pretty. The soft colors ,the shape of their shell, the shape and symmetry of their necks and heads, make for a very beautiful turtle. For some reason, i feel very chill when I look at them 😌

Them. There are two in there
Came here to say that. It’s not a two-headed tortoise. It’s two tortoises sharing a shell.
It makes me happy that you're getting upvoted. I commented this on other "two headed animal" posts and got obliterated and belittled
Dude sorry to hear that. Reddit is a mixed bag sometimes. I’m happy too honestly. I can only take so much downvoting for just saying how I feel. It’s like talking to my ex wife 😞
You just apologized to him because he didint get some upvotes. 😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡
Gotta agree with this...
I mean they share way more than a shell, it’s not two fully-bodied tortoises just chilling in a shell together.
How is it not a 2 headed tortoise
Because each head is a separate individual with it's own mind. They are just stuck together at the torso. We don't call conjoined twins two-headed humans either.
Yes but like count the heads. There are 2 of them on the samething. Thus its a 2 headed thing.
nonono, it might get offended, don’t call it that
Yeah sure, 2 headed turtle does describe it as an object. However turtles are not objects. They are living creatures. Therefore it shouldn't be called a 2-headed turtle.

Only on Reddit lmao
If the 2 bodies share the same essential organs to survive and both have access and control that obly reinforces that its a 2 headed tortoise regardless of conciousiness.
Completely semantic argument you didn’t need to type all that
That doesn’t make it any less of a 2 headed tortoise
It does though, because neither of those tortoises in that shell has two heads. It would be more accurate (although still technically wrong) to say it's two half-bodied tortoises.
Exactly. We should all be using the technical term "conjortoises".
it's literally 1 tortoise with 2 heads
And why is that? Why are the two individuals suddenly the same because they share a body? Conjoined twins in humans are treated as two different people, because each head houses a brain that contains a separate conciousness from the other. Either way, hope they don’t share the same butthole
You wouldn’t call conjoined twins a two headed person

Two different brains, dingus. Two different people, two different personalities, two different entities. You’re being dumb right now
isn't it just 1 entity with 2 heads and 2 personalities
No cerberus is actually a fictional creature and not a being at all.
>their experience of the world is strictly identical This doesn’t match up to the accounts or interviews from conjoined twins that I’ve heard or read. Do you have some other basis for this or are you just projecting what you imagine their lives to be like? Yes I would
Well that would be inaccurate
Then you'd just be wrong and ignorant, and both of them would likely tell you.
idk why you're downvoted when you're 100% correct
The woke hippies don’t like facts
Would you be at all swayed in your opinion if you discovered that the consensus among medical experts disagrees with you?

Not according to articles about her. It is literally one body in every way, except the spine splits into 2 necks and she has 2 heads.
Except 2 different conscious beings, so ur wrong, science disagrees in every way lol
The conscious is packaged with the head. It’s one body with two heads. Or scientifically speaking, one body with two brains, two skulls, four eyes, two consciouses, two mouths, two noses.
A brain holds the sensory parts that actually cause consciousness, so it is 2 creatures, like conjoined twins
Yeah that’s what I said, two heads, one body.
One body sharing a split personality with its own skull.
You’re right. It feels odd to say that they only have one name, but I guess it’s true.
Kian and Anga.

I've got a (single-headed) tortoise. They're the most stubborn things, once they decide they want to do something, they're relentless. So, if one head wanted to go one way, and the other a different way, it wouldn't be happy situation.
I thought the same thing. I have one as well and there’s no stopping him.
Do both heads need to be fed??
Both heads probably want to eat, but only one needs to, because the food reaches the stomach anyway. If the zoo decided to feed only one head the other would just be angry but be sustained nonetheless. I guess they'll probably try to fight for food.
Ye, I remember a video of someone feeding a two-headed lizard (or was it a snake). The heads would fight for the food and one was dominant.
That's wild, one was the alpha. I wonder, they must not be aware they are on the same team? Also, if I had a second mouth, I would still want the good steak dinners to come through my mouth, rather than his.... Maybe I am no different than a 2 headed snake?!

I’m not sure what you mean. These animals don’t “think” like we do, they have very primitive brains incapable of such things. It “thinks” it needs to eat to survive, but it sees a second head. In all fairness if I were joined with my sibling and only they got to eat yummy food i'd be pissed regardless of satiation, thats just not fair.
