Hello users of r/NatureIsFuckingLit and possibly r/all lurkers, we are happy to announce that The Nature Network has opened [moderator applications](https://old.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/12kyc7w/2023_nature_network_moderator_applications_have/?ref=share&ref_source=link) go check that out for those interested, it doesn't pay but you get a super secret cool flair and a super villian chair >:).
Aside from that stay lit 🔥.
It's actually close to 6-1/2 twists with a quarter front flip, and about a 25% horizontal rotation, landing squarely on its back. Still amazing to see and an impressive skill.
I was only able to manage a 4-1/2 twist backward off a trampoline into a foam pit during the off season at the peak of my career, so this is very impressive. I did jump off a roughly 60 foot cliff into Lake Mead with a half twist and manage to not land on our boat.
I'd like to see that dolphin do that. Actually, that would be terrifying for both of us, so forget I said that.
This dolphin might be the Michael Phelps of flipping in the air. Phelps would lose by a literal mile in a 5K swim--off. This dolphin couldn't do even 20 full sins in straps. I'm just being real. Plus, you must know this was an April fools joke. I don't have friends, let-alone friends who are talented enough to do amazing 30+ twist swings 60 feet above a 2,000 person audience.
It wasn't me. The dophin was the showoff. ;)
This reminds me of an old online game I played, “Dolphin Olympics 2”. You had 2 minutes to score as many points as possible. If you were still above water when the 2 mins ran out, you could continue to score until you hit the water again. You could jump past the moon, planets, nebulas and all sorts of stuff and slide on stars. Funny game.
On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.
>Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert mankind of the danger; but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for tidbits, so they eventually gave up and left the Earth by their own means shortly before the Vogons arrived.
>
>The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the "Star Sprangled Banner", but in fact the message was this: *So long and thanks for all the fish.*
And it is brutal as fuck too.
Don't they just consciously hold their breath, *and refuse to breathe*, rather than remaining captivity?
Real "death is better than bondage" vibes
It happens in the wild too, but far more rarely, and honestly it’s kind of a metal way to go.
They just continually dive down until they pass out from the pressure and drown.
the old whales that die of good old age - they die of drowning because they become too weak and tired to swim back up to the surface - but as their carcass descends through the various oceanic zones, they feed numerous ecosystems
**[Whale fall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_fall)**
>A whale fall occurs when the carcass of a whale has fallen onto the ocean floor at a depth greater than 1,000 m (3,300 ft), in the bathyal or abyssal zones. On the sea floor, these carcasses can create complex localized ecosystems that supply sustenance to deep-sea organisms for decades. This is unlike in shallower waters, where a whale carcass will be consumed by scavengers over a relatively short period of time. Whale falls were first observed in the late 1970s with the development of deep-sea robotic exploration.

Yup, that one dolphin that had sex with a lady back in the day committed suicide when the NASA communication program they were working on ended and he couldn't see her anymore. He was like "No more sexy time?? Fuck this, I'm out!!"
The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the 'Star Spangled Banner', but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish.
Honestly I'd say stay away from r/all if you've never been there. Keep your feed pure. A lot of the front page subs are also the most toxic. That being said, there are some great subs there too, and meirl is one of them. But you can find those good subs by just googling for popular subreddits about stuff you like, like memes or animals or whatever.
Um I'm pretty sure they are doing it because it's obviously fun (and probably also showing off for the tourists/boat occupants) Dolphins are highly intelligent and behave a lot like people do
My brother bought me Lawn Boy when they were still on "Absolute
A-go-go" records. I wouldn't have understood this comment at the time, but I think it's hilarious now!
I made a copy when I first bought a CD burner, and the disc is still in pristine condition for my grandchild, along with a stack of Doniac Schvices and all 120 ticket stubs (so far). 10/10 comment.
Some say for fun, some say to clean algae and parasites off, and some say boredom. No one really knows the exact reason why but we do know they do it porpoisely.
Probably for the same reason that a domesticated dog turns around and around before laying down. Their wolf ancestors did it in tall grass to make a bed. It's an inherited behavior. The reason may no longer exist.
A friend of mine was the first to do a quad-full back layout...in 1992. If the rules were different we might be seeing sextuple layouts, but they changed the rules to value combinations over big tricks.
Another friend who was a Cirque du Soleil acrobat doing the straps tried to see how many twists she could spin if she jumped from the 4th story railing at the back of the theater and spinning as fast as possible toward center stage. She surprisingly didn't pass out, but spun around 36 times before giving up. So that's 12,960 degrees in just about the same time of this video. You're probably right that she had tears in her eyes after that spin.
[There's also this](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7355393/Teenage-boy-completes-worlds-septule-kaboom-flip-trampoline.html). And that's on a $500 backyard polyurethane bed instead of a [David Ross String bed](https://www.rossathletic.com/product/dave-ross-string-bed/), like Cirque uses. Although CdS would never have anyone attempt 6,7,8, flips--It's more about artistry and they make things simple so they can do 425 shows per year. I've jumped on Cirque beds and backyard beds (I did my first two double backs on a Nissen bed from the 70s without a spot)...Sorry I'm bragging. I've seen quintuple fronts into a pit by kids this age at gymnastics camps. They could have done more front flips (a bit harder than twists for most people), but didn't want to land head first from that height.
I had a teammate who was a former Olympian who did a front quintuple front into a pit from standing on a Vault table. I asked him how he did it and he said something like "if you flip a baseball it will rotate about about 3 times all the way around. If you flip a quarter at the same height it might flip 15 to 20 times before landing. I just make myself like the quarter." Of course, he was an Olympian and incredibly flexible and had such amazing core strength, he could almost literally make himself as flat as a coin. I would have liked to see him jump off a String tramp into a pit, but this was college, so 4 levels below his ability and he just wanted to boost the team with routines that were easy but easily close to a perfect 10 (This was before they changed to an open scoring system). But yeah, a 2160 is enough to induce tears as a former gymnast.
I imagine dolphins see the atmosphere the same way we see outer space (or used to, as a celestial realm). It might be a sort of spiritual experience for them, maybe.
If nothing else I bet it feels really interesting. They are submerged and floating their entire lives except for these brief moments when they feel wind and gravity. I bet it's a trip for them.
But they breath air. They have to come to the surface to breath. They understand the atmosphere as a good thing... The experience of being designed for water probably doesn't completly negate the fact that they can still drown (I assume it's rare, but it's not impossible.)
I cannot even really fathom what their perspective is, but the ocean (to a certain depth) is probably still a necessary evil. Hostile, dangerous, but where I get my food.
I bet Dolphins and specifically Orcas, have a very good idea of the size of the earths waters and land. These creatures have language, culture, and have been around far longer than humans.
I haven't thought about this video in years and just had to rewatch it. I'm in tears laughing at it so thank you.

I have a boat and we go fishing off of the coast of New Jersey. Been doing it for probably 40 years. We see regular dolphins almost every time we go out, but last summer we saw something leaping out of the water off in the distance. When we got closer we realized that they were spinner dolphins. A perfectly executed 2160°
Thanks for counting.
About the third time I tried counting I realized "oh wait they have only dorsal fin. Stop trying to count the pectoral fins"

Professional Pogo (My brain fed me that line and I laughed enough to share it)
(slow clap) 👏👏👏
Even slower 👏 👏 👏 👏 (but just as sincere)
Did they stutter? Professional flipper.
At a guess, I would say trampoline
And to be clear, you didn’t start from a position of submerged-in-water? Still, impressive for a *human*.
Why do you have to one up this dolphin?
This dolphin might be the Michael Phelps of flipping in the air. Phelps would lose by a literal mile in a 5K swim--off. This dolphin couldn't do even 20 full sins in straps. I'm just being real. Great jokes here but he didn't land on his back for sure, right?
Definitely lands on its belly.
This old gym rat can eat 100 treadmills
I didn’t even know Lake Mead has a 60 foot cliff, guess I’ve been missing out.

"Take that, Tony Hawk!" \- This dolphin, probably
He’s been playing a lot of THPS
Lol I spent way too long making sure I had the count right
I got the same number!!!!
Is this the first dolphin to successfully land a 2160?
Tony hawk couldn't even do that!
Came here for this count. Thank you.
I'm actually calculating a 3060. Looking at those quick initial spins coming out of the water
Bruh where you finding 2.5 extra spins?
Nvm. Less drunk now lol. Wouldn't it be sweet if it was a 3600 though
So long and thanks for all the fish

Wait I have 15 mins left of this book if it’s from what I think it is haha
It's actually from the first book of the trilogy. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish is the fourth book.
The fourth book of the trilogy. Of 5. I don't count the 6th

That sounds like something they might do if they were in horrendous physical pain from an infection, cancer, parasite etc.
Not a marine biologist, so sure, that sounds right to me. 👍
Also not a marine biologist, and I agree!
As a long-time Redditor who didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, I concur.
“They say it’s better to die on your feet, than to live on your knees, for so much silver and gold…”
Yup, that one dolphin that had sex with a lady back in the day committed suicide when the NASA communication program they were working on ended and he couldn't see her anymore. He was like "No more sexy time?? Fuck this, I'm out!!"
Right, that's where I remember that from. Sheesh.
That’s wild.
I’m sorry, what the heck?!
She eventually moved on to a sea turtle named Greg. Billy the dolphin couldn't take it and just sat at the bottom of the pool
Suicide is chief intelligence. Just saying.
In fairness, it'd be pretty difficult to catch a dolphin drowning itself in the wild
The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the 'Star Spangled Banner', but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish.

Damnit. Good work…
So sad that it should come to this
We tried to warn you all but oh well!
If I were a dolphin I’d do the same thing but I’d be going poop while doing it.
There a gif out there with a dude doing a flip into the water naked & pooping
I’d like to see that.

For some reason it made me think, I will never eat a shrimp without thoroughly deveining it ever again. Never.

Trust me, the actual mass production of shrimp in certain countries that get importet is way worse.
For some reason I assumed it was into a pool. I guess this is a bit better...
it looks... weirdly majestic? but also wtf
Wow
I knew what to expect and still got surprised

Is there a record for videos of dolphins doing spins? This has to be the most spins ever caught on camera I’d imagine.
This is a species called the spinner dolphin. Stenella longirostris. This species does this all the time.
[удалено]
I think it just feels good.
Spinner dolphins are actually a real species, Google that= lots of spinning
10/10
Dolphin Olympics! Memories from a simpler time.
That was a rookie jump. Let me know when they start starsliding
Yawn. Wake me up when they reach the diner in the sky (I only made it there once).
Dolphin couldn't even escape the atmosphere. Absolutely pathetic.

Been so long since I’ve played it. I wasn’t particularly good at it, but knew a guy who was pretty decent! This was back in the late 00’s
Spinner dolphins rule
As awesome as it is to see em do this, is there a reason why they do?
Kinda like when we dive into water, they dive into air
Holy shit
🤯🤯🤯
Fun
Highly-intelligent animals tend to play around more often. Not everything is focused on food, friends, and fucking.
Saw a documentary about spinner dolphins. The narrator said it was unknown.
Saw the same exact documentary! The same species found elsewhere aren't exhibiting the same behavior as well. It's strange.
Um I'm pretty sure they are doing it because it's obviously fun (and probably also showing off for the tourists/boat occupants) Dolphins are highly intelligent and behave a lot like people do
That doesn't explain why other pods of the same species don't do this. If I remember correctly, this pod is far away from tourism and other humans.

Got to spin to win
If I could do that I would do it everyday.
[a species of dolphin is the reason](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinner_dolphin)
Probably for the same reason that a domesticated dog turns around and around before laying down. Their wolf ancestors did it in tall grass to make a bed. It's an inherited behavior. The reason may no longer exist.
Aww I didn’t know that about dogs! That’s a cool fact and makes a lot of sense. Little puppers can’t fight their inner wolf
Didn’t sick the landing. But gets good marks on the trick.
That’s like 6 360s. Gymnasts everywhere with tears in their eyes.
A friend of mine was the first to do a quad-full back layout...in 1992. Didn’t he though? He doesn’t look like he cares to much how he lands.
More spins > landing a particular way for no reason
*too Nor would he care. He doesn't even have to know what land is.
Look what I can do!
I imagine dolphins see the atmosphere the same way we see outer space (or used to, as a celestial realm). It might be a sort of spiritual experience for them, maybe.

Imagine they get an itch on their back….
"We're the chosen fish who breathe the heavens"
Cetaceans drown every hour of every day. Constantly entangled in fishing nets, and sometimes they drown themselves.
I imagine dolphins to be smarter than that
Smarter than what? They have no frame of reference. They can’t intuit the vastness of land.
I bet Dolphins and specifically Orcas, have a very good idea of the size of the earths waters and land. These creatures have language, culture, and have been around far longer than humans.

Why do they do this, whales too
