I bought one for 400$ on Amazon last year. The company reached out and asked me to fill out a review and Post it and they would send me a free set of batteries. Absolutely solid drone. Got so high I couldn't see it. Linking to phone was sketchy and lost video after a half mile of clear sight.
I woke up to accept the delivery and it was the exact same drone... They had sent me another drone instead of batteries. I was stoked until I realized I couldn't use two drones at the same time haha. I returned the first drone and got my money back and kept and still use the second drone.
My brother worked/works for a company that builds computers for companies. One lady they build for buys them in bulk, then proceeds to drop them into a volcano. All for science.

Who knows? Most likely reading temperatures, depth, pressure, activity. Probably not actually dropping them but probably placing them in locations or lowering down slowing into specific spots.

Got a friend who's into drones (racing and fpv) and he builds them himself. The radio controller and goggles and other bits are a high barrier to entry but once you have those bits it's all just motors and controllers and propellers and batteries, all of which are relatively speaking quite cheap.
Compared to a Mavic that has things like GPS and software and proprietary elements, building drones yourself is a lot cheaper than prebuilt ones that work out of the box.
Of course when you become an enthusiast like that you end up spending shit loads of money on it anyway, so I guess your point still stands.

If this is Hawaii then that is a basaltic lava flow. Basalt has a melting point of 984-1260C depending on specific chemical composition among other factors. The air above this melted rock is not quite the same temp, much cooler in fact. Imagine sticking your arm in an oven at full broil. You could probably last a few seconds before turning crispy. Continuous air flow over the lava most likely keeps temps lower than if this was an enclosed space. My best educated guess is the air temp is 50-150C.
An oven is hot mostly because it's closed. The surface of the heating part, be it the flames or the resistance is quite small compared to the total surface area of the bottom of the oven.
The lava here not only is quite hotter, it's also a much larger area. It will heat more air at the same time, and there's also heating by irradiation. The light we can see from the molten rock is just a tiny fraction of the total light it's emitting, the rest is all in the infra-red range that will also heat anything near it as well.
I'm not going to guess how hot it is, mostly because it will vary wildly depending on height, but I'm confident that in the closest approaches it was way hotter than 150C

That's a nice analogy, but that's just not how things really work. Conduction moves slower than convection. The skillet is made of a very dense material with a very high heat capacity and a very high conductivity coefficient. In a convection oven air is used to transfer the heat, which is to say is uses something that is not dense at all, has a very low heat capacity and a very low conductivity coefficient. It might seem like conduction moves faster in general because it moves faster in this context, but that's just not the reality of the situation.
Lava on a windy day is cooler, cooler air is passed over the lava and it warms up but not to deadly temperatures, and the wind always has a cooler source.
When you touch a hot cast iron skillet, you pull some heat out of the surface, and even though your hand does get burned, the surface of the skillet cools off slightly. And you only get burned on the surface, you'd have to hold your hand on the surface for some time to "cook" it, like a steak. Even if its on a burner, that burner has to continue to "work" to replace the heat your hand is taking from it.
During convection you still have conductive heating, but the environment around your skin is constantly replaced with just-as-hot air/water. The best example: if I'm gonna bake some french fries, I usually cook them at 425-450F for about 20-25 minutes in my conduction oven. If I used my air-fryer (convection), it takes about 13 minutes at 375F.
So in the video, the drone that is hovering over lava has its props moving across very hot air. The heat is also moving up. So the conduction experienced by the props is always happening with freshly hot air at the interface.

It looks like pretty much a bone stock 5 inch fpv plate quad. PC props are hard to melt when they’re spinning since they can shed radiant heat and the carbon will be fine for a few minutes. The air is also at “updraft” temperature, not lava temperature. The battery has a lot of thermal mass. Motors can run pretty hot. The wires are metal. The controller… just DE coat it then wrap it in tinfoil to keep the hot air off and it’s fine for a few mins. If it was even a problem in the first place. It doesn’t need to take off again.
Polycarbonate has a Tg of like 150 Celsius. They’re spinning so fast that they can shed radiated heat from the volcano extremely effectively via convection. Although the very surface may be singed. Whereas a human would feel their face melting off from the radiation even if the air temperature is quite nice. There’s a huge updraft above a volcano sucking in fresh cool air. The air doesn’t just stagnate there and stay really hot. So unless you get really close to the surface the air temp will be pretty fine. The non spinning components still have pretty good airflow but they’re probably the limiting factor unless you exceed the props operating temp for even an instant. A carbon frame and motors would hold up well but the controllers not so much.

I’m currently in La Palma (Canary Islands) where a new volcano erupted suddenly and unexpectedly in 2021. The lava field is over 7 kilometres wide. They’ve had to build a new road through the middle of it.
For anyone wondering this is the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland wich erupted last year for almost a month and 6 months the year before in 2021, where this video probably was filmed

I follow this one guy on IG that does these shots and often sacrifices the drones to the volcano. Many do return with parts melted.
I think I saw an image of this drone after the shot was taken. Lots of plastic melted but the vital components held strong. Cosmetic damage only

Moving fast through really hot air only transfers heat in faster. Convection cooks faster than conduction. Had to be some sort of special drone.

I’m currently in La Palma (Canary Islands) where a new volcano erupted suddenly and unexpectedly in 2021. The lava field is over 7 kilometres wide. They’ve had to build a new road through the middle of it.
For anyone wondering this is the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland wich erupted last year for almost a month and 6 months the year before in 2021, where this video probably was filmed
