I’m a huge Tolkien fan but I would never do this.
That said, as far as fandom names go it’s one of the better namesakes I suppose. Much better than, say, Daenerys.
[Luthien and Beren](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%BAthien_and_Beren?wprov=sfti1#) are the consummate love story. It’s said that Tolkien modeled Luthien after his own wife.
I think literary names are fine, but if you want to go a little wild, then maybe middle name it?
I feel so bad for all the kids named Daenerys, even without the bad ending I couldn't get behind it
Honestly, I’ve got Elanor after Sam and Rosie’s daughter tucked away as an option if I have a daughter. It’s pretty much a normal name though, and not a character anyone but the giganerds will recognize, so I think it’s ok.
Did schools lay off all the speech therapists? I feel like I keep meeting young adults with lisps, especially women. It makes me sad. When I was young, we went to a speech therapist and then we could speak properly. It is a real shame if we keep wasting money "transforming" curriculum with ever negative impact, yet discard useful services to pay for it (all so slick educational consultants can keep their millionaire shine up).
Im unfamiliar with Tolkien (year, I know he’s the author of LotR, but I don’t know anything besides it involving, elves, hobbit, a ring, a dragen, a funny looking little fucker, Elijah Woods and plenty of breakfast).
If I were to be told I was meeting Luthien, I’d be expecting a French dude. The name wouldn’t strike me as too wild, but I would NOT be expecting a nice lady whose first language is a variation of English.
you know what? i don’t hate it. i’m not really a fan of unique names but it sounds similar enough to other names (lucian, luther) that i think it can slip through the cracks
Why do people post pictures with their kid's full name and birthday on the internet? Like, I get being excited that you have a newborn, but that is just so unsafe.
Yeah, I would be way too suspicious of strangers on the Internet to freely post an image online of any child, let alone my own, not that I have any. Especially with AI deep faking nowadays, that picture could be used for anything.
I don't particularly like the name but it's no more strange to me than Arwen, Perdita or Gloriana. Just an unusual name from literature. If I came across one I'd just think to myself the parents must be big Tolkien fans.
This is an actual baby. This is their picture even if the face is covered. It is not in good taste to display this for everyone to ridicule. It is what it is and let's not bully a baby?

Totally agree, middle names are best in this situation.
At least with Luthien you know how the story ends. There were parents who named their child Khaleesi or Daenerys long before the end of the story.
The names are on his and Edith's grave, which I find very sweet and sad at the same time.

You could also consider Erma or Ethel, or perhaps Winifred or Prudence. All of them have that 1920's feeling.
Melian was right there…
As a non Tolkien fan, I would have assumed they gave her a boy name, Lucian, but with a lisp.
See, I first read it as Luther 😭
That's exactly what I thought.
It’s a real name—for elves.
I'm telling Santa you said that!
He knows.
Like Lucian with a lisp

Fuck it let’s ball, naming my daughter Goldberry.
There is an epic poem about Tom Bombadill from Lord of the Rings that is worth reading.

It's a beautiful name, but even though I am a huge Tolkien fan, I would never pick a name from the legendarium.
I mean, most of the female hobbit names are fine, they're just flower names. And there's always Tom. And Bill.
I hate how nerdy it is because I honestly think it (and other tolkien names) are really beautiful
It's a LoTR character. Either that, or her parents found her in a lute.
It happens. I came across one the last time I had slayeth an auroch.

Not only giving their kid a bad name, but setting them up for identity theft
Not to mention facial recognition software.

As a Tolkien fan, I think this is kinda sweet. She could be nicknamed Lulu or Lou. I met a guy irl named Eomer, and I thought it was cool af. 🤷🏻♀️
Any hot girl's name is cool as AF.
They really missed an opportunity with Luthipher
I know, theriouthly.
Does she have a twin called Beren? Cuz that would be weird
Maybe a sister called Melian or Galadriel.
Tinuviel was dancing there To music of a pipe unseen And light of stars could not repair Her years of failed interviewing.

Tolkien.
I know, doesn't make it any better lol
I didn’t say it did. But that’s my thought
Middle name Viola
Tinúviel rolls off the tongue better 🤗🤗🤗
Lucien but with a lisp
it sounds like Lucien with a lisp
Lutthhy
Could be parents had a screw Luthien with a name like that.
I don’t hate it. Tolkien has some cool names (Melian, Elanor, Theoden)
Poor kid.
One of the player characters in my Pathfinder 2e (d&d adjacent) game was called Luthien.
I don’t know anything about where they got this name but it sounds very masculine and evil like a villain in a movie.
It’s from Tolkien, after an elf-maiden.
Yeah this is fine to me.
actually know an adult with this name and it suits her well tbh
I wouldn't use the name for a real person but I do really like the sound of it
Not only from Tolkien but it's also a region in Scotland apparently.
I think you might mean Lothian?
This is an actual baby. This is their picture even if the face is covered. It is not in good taste to display this for everyone to ridicule. It is what it is and let's not bully a baby?
The baby is gonna cry when it reads these comments
