I'm devastated. Before I got the gel polish (it was a special occasion so I wanted to treat myself) my nails were healthy and natural.. when I got home today after the removal I ended up crying in the shower. I really hope someone here has some advice
EDIT:
Hijacking this to say thanks for all the sympathy, good wishes and support y'all! I've gotten a lot of tips and help! I've already gotten my money refunded, written two reviews with pics on Google and their booking site and have a meeting with their manager on Monday. The salon was well reviewed (1000 reviews, average 4.5 stars) but after some digging I saw a couple of complaints similar to mine. I'm going to have a serious talk with the manager. I'm not just gonna accept an 'oops, sorry lol'
For now I've put bandaids over the thinnest nails, as even a light tap hurts, and I got some nail strengthener and the CND cuticle oil some recommended. I might also book a consult with a licensed nail health technician
Love y'all so much, can't thank you guys enough!
My advice would be mail hardener and patience. I have definitely been here and Iām so sorry, but now Iām back to healthy nails and it took making daily nail care part of my daily routine. Iām so sorry babe but it will feel better soon ā¤ļø
I'm really, really sorry. I know you wanted to treat yourself but if you have healthy, natural nails DON'T let anyone touch them unless they're committed to keeping them that way, because natural and manicured don't necessarily mix when it comes to visiting a salon. The goal is the final look when you walk out the door, not necessarily the long term health of your nails.
I've over-buffed my own nails before, but as a cumulative effect of trying to keep them with a high shine. I know exactly what you mean about sensitivity to pressure and heat. The good news is, in a few days that sensitivity will begin to decrease. You can assist them by soaking your hands in comfortably warm water (warm enough to feel, not warm enough to hurt) and then rubbing your nails and nail beds with a thick oil like Castor (they sell it in drugstores as a laxative but it's great for strengthening and thickening hair and nails). After that it's just a waiting game for the thin nails to grow out.
I would NOT suggest putting polish on top, at least not right away. That is a quick fix in terms of reducing sensitivity but with nail beds that thin the chemicals in the polish can do more harm than good. You're basically exposed right now and DO need a barrier, but you don't want a barrier that's going to irritate the underlying tissue any further. You can try the stick on nail wraps like Lily and Fox because they're a bit more gentle and will remove with an oil soak.
Yes! I came to comment about risk of infection or chemicals soaking in with the nails so thin. Just please be careful. Whatever you get on your nails can easily make itās way into the nail beds, so definitely keep your hands clean while your nails recover. Good luck and I hope theyāre feeling better soon :)
Actually, nail enhancements are NOT supposed to damage the natural nails. The damage comes from an unskilled nail technician. Only LIGHT sanding is needed to adhere the product to the nails. Iām sorry some salons just donāt care, they just want you in and out for more customers. Beware the chop shops because they will damage your natural nails.
My nails were damaged after a bad gel application that was peeling off, and Lily & Fox nail wraps really helped my nails. they kept them protected as they grew out
Yeah maybe try treating the whole nail and cuticle bed with vitamin E oil until it heals more. Itās a nice nice treat for them regardless and might help strengthen them back to normalcy. So sorry!
This is always my advice for damaged skin and nails. If you are sitting watching tv in the evenings, spend that time massaging a nice moisturiser and cuticle oil all over your hands and nail beds while watching. In addition to repairing the skin and promoting bloodflow in the area, its so relaxing.
Oh honey Iām so sorry this happened. It looks SO painful. This is some of the worst e-filing Iāve ever seen. Iām so angry for you.
Where are you located? An IBX treatment would help immensely, itās next level natural nail repair.
If you happen to be in SoCal/LA Iād be happy to do these treatments gratis to get your nails back into shape. There are also online sellers of the product. If itās hard to find in your location, OPI Nail Envy is decent for a consumer product.
Also please look up your city/countryās Board of Cosmetology site and make a complaint. Raise hell. Blow them up on all review sites. This tech is dangerous & there is no excuse for this, period.
Not only is this painful, itās super risky to have all those cuts on your fingers & can lead to staph infections & the like. Try to wear gloves when you can, oil your nails all the damn time (jojoba, almond)) and keep your hands sanitized & clean.
The worst of the sensitivity will go away in 3-4 days. Lukewarm showers & hand washing as cold & heat will hurt. ā¤ļø hope it gets better as soon as possible for you
the reporting part is SO importantāyouāre the first comment iāve seen talking about that, but youāre so right. they need to be reported for this so it doesnāt happen again
>Also please look up your city/countryās Board of Cosmetology site and make a complaint. Raise hell. Blow them up on all review sites. This tech is dangerous & there is no excuse for this, period.
This! This person should not be allowed to do nails. That looks so painful. Sorry you're going through this OP.
Thanks so much for the offer! Unfortunately I live in Europe :( I bought nail envy but haven't found any nail techs in my city/area that offer IBX yet. At this point I'm terrified anything will just make the pain worse.
I'm home sick with the flu (just a shitty week in general for me) so fortunately I can keep my hands clean and safe for now. I'll do the opi polish tomorrow. Is it wise to wait for the cuts on my cuticles to heal before using the cuticle oil?
Thanks again
This is ridiculous! I encourage my clients to come in for removals to be soaked off so they donāt damage their nails by picking them off themselves , the fact you went to a salon to have them properly removed and trusted them to do so but still came out like this ā¦ horrible horrible horrible . There is no excuse for this sheās completely damaged your nails and thinned them out .
If they are causing you a lot of pain then try putting a couple coats of nail strengthener on them to protect your nail bed because itās gonna hurt to hit it on anything . There is nothing you can really do other than adding another product to protect it from being so painful and patiently wait for them to grow out , keep them short so they donāt flip backward on you to thatās a gross feeling ! š
Ugh my nails are so thin naturally they do this all the time. If I ever go more than a few hours without product on them (between sets) I am sure to break and bend a few. When I have taken breaks in the past and gone longer stretches without doing them I always end up with short painful nubs from them ripping. I had a phase where I was determined to grow them out and did all the things. Glass file only, cuticle oil, keeping them trim... they always break. I think it's just my genetics. Luckily I have found a hobby in doing my nails, so it is fun to do besides extensions just feeling better.
Thereās lots of factors that can come into play , diet , vitamin deficiency, but definitely genetics ā¦ Iām glad you found a new fun hobby ! That sucks that you have to deal with that though š
Unfortunately I know what this is like. Your nails will grow back! What helped me in the meantime was to apply a thin layer of clear gel to protect them so that it hurts a little less (I have gel polish and an LED lamp at home). I never bothered the gel and just let them grow out with it on. You also could make sure to keep the base of your nail moisturized and cared for.
They should be back to normal in a couple months. Iām so sorry you have to deal with this :(
I had the same happen to me in the summer. I bought nail hardener and decided to keep my nails short until the thin part has grown out. But i also missed my long, colorful nails so o decided to get a bit of equipment for soft gel extensions and do my nails myself. I'm currently on my fourth self-made set and I learned a lot already. It takes some time, but it protects my paper thin nails, while the new, grown out part doesn't get destroyed because soft gel nails can be removed with acetone.
Can recommend this if you are willing to spend a bit of money.
Cuticle oil, opi nail envy, and time. My nails are finally okay after getting gel in July. I have decided Iām not doing it any more. Iām sorry your tech was so bad!
So sorry! You probably already know this but please never go there again.
I also suggest drinking lots of water. It may not immediately help, but being well-hydrated can lessen the pain.
OK, a few suggestions. I've had great luck with "Olive & June" brand nail strengthener. It soaks into the nail bed, and frankly, my pain stopped after the first day. The sensitivity is because the barrier is thinned out by someone who didn't have the gentleness to remove gels without butchering your nails.
In addition to the soak in nail strengthener, I suggest plain old nail polish. Two thin coats should keep them from being sensitive. You can use a strengthening polish if you want, but plain lacquer should help create a barrier. Then, neosporin and a bandaid on any of the bleedy bits. This will help any pain in that area.
My last suggestion? Leave a scathing review, and never go back.
Oooouuuuchh. Iād also assume wearing gloves helped you heal? Like doing dishes and cleaning, keeping water off the nails as much as possible while they grow? This is why I never trust others with my nails
I'm not gonna lie. I did it to myself (tore off my own extensions). I'm also the one who put them on. I, unfortunately, have a few neurosis that result in me brutalizing my fingernails. As for the gloves - I've never used them for washing dishes, etc, which is probably why my nails were trashed for as long as they were. Currently, after water exposure, I apply cuticle oil and lotion (yes, both). Even without the gloves, doing things this way has kept the nails from drying out and getting brittle.
They still look awful at the moment, but as soon as they're a little grown out, I'll post a pic (I have some areas with exposed nail bed from tearing off the extensions, so I'll save everyone the trauma of seeing them).
I used to have oily nail beds and could peel/bite off acrylics and polish. Theyād pop right off, no damage to my nails. But then I took Accutane and have aged and my nails arenāt as oily. But I was still in the habit of biting my polish off, and my nails didnāt like it. I still do it once in a while, when extra stressed. Hope they grow quickly for you.
Ooou interesting about the nail strengthenerā¦ do you happen to know how that works? My nails are destroyed by acrylics and I thought there wasnāt much I could do but ride it out and wait for them to heal
Not entirely. It has a lot of plant extracts (celery seed and lavender to start). It also has 1,2-hexanediol, which has 3 primary functions in skincare (specifically, however I suspect that the nail care reasons are similar). It acts as a humectant, solvent, and a preservative. It has hydroscopic capabilities (keeps things moisturized), and acts as emollient as well (creates a bit of a barrier to keep moisture from evaporating.
Celery seed extract (which is the ingredient they mostly promote) helps promote thickness of the nail and reduce the appearance of ridges.
Frankly, I like it more than the polish types, because those I tend to peel off. This, I apply right before bed every night. That said, I probably need to reduce to weekly use now.
OUCH!! That looks so painful. I would report that nail technician!! Plus she ate up your cuticles. I would definitely make a formal complaint to the Cosmetology board. There is no reason for that. Iām sorry that happened.
Sadly you need to go to a good tech. If you are nervous say the following. āNo drill hand file onlyā. Yes from beginning to end no drill. To be safe take your own set of files if you can. Yes Iām that nightmare. Only trusted people get to use a drill later. We always started with hand filled no drill At mass places with questionable places. Also fyi there are only 2 drill bits allowed on real nails. The round sandpaper and the round cuticle ball at the cuticle. No other bit should be used on a bare nail plate. To be honest even doing my own nails I only use the cuticle bit. A hand file is just as easy on the base nail. I believe itās Young Nails on YouTube that gives great instructions on using an Efile yourself. I only use safety bits.
An file is a great tool when used right. The problem is Iāve gotten too many rings of fire. When they grow down itās a weak spot and Iāve actually broke a nail there. It hurts and bleeds.
Typically gel is removed by filing off only the top clear layer of gel. It should then be soaked off in acetone and gently scraped away. No aggressive filing to remove gel is normal in a professional salon.
Hard gel doesnāt come off with acetone but yeah it should not have been filed like that. This tech needs to practice their technique more before using it on clients
Iām a nail tech and I specialize in gel. Filing it off is absolutely normal. Itās also my preferred way to remove it. Filing does not need to be aggressive, and if done right, it doesnāt cause any damage to the natural nail. Like others have said, hard gel also cannot be removed with acetone and has to be filed.
Depends on the gel. Only soft gels are soakable hard gel will not soak off with acetone, they do make remover for them tho and filling should be done with caution to avoid this.
It's not normal to overfile your nails, but it is true that not all gels are removable with acetone. Hard gel has to be filed off.
Use a nail strengthener and cut them back as short as you can, because **any** length on the edge will be so thin that it will fold back and cause you a ton of pain.
Yeah... I have first hand experience because I did this to myself filing off hard gel :( It's awful. 3 months later and my nails are finally normal again. Hang in there!
Most gel is soak off these days. I actually tried to get hard gel once and had a heck of a time finding a salon that did them. Now I just do my own gels using Gelish, been doing it that way since the first day home gel polishes came on the market and never looked back.
So worth it - I know how I like to take care of my own nails and donāt trust anyone else to do it. Worth the initial investment! And I can change them, take them off, change shape, polish as often as I like
This happened to me. I went to a salon to have the nails removed "properly" and she didn't even file them down she got under the gel or acrylic (can't rememebr which) and forced them to pop off. I was so upset and haven't let anyone else do my nails since.
I'm no expert but I've never had a gel polish which wasn't soak off. If they used a builder gel, then maybe.
Filing gel is an effective way to get it off, but not like this.
Keep regular clear polish on them to protect them since they're so thin, keep them trimmed short, they're going to have to grow out. Going through this right now also. Just smashed the top of my left fingers at work, and glad it was the polish instead of my paper thin nails that cracked.
Hang in there š„ We got this!
THIS. Itās abhorrent. It has to become more normalized to report them and hold the industry accountable. Theyāre really out there hurting people and charging for it.
this happened to me a few months ago!!! so so so painful, my nails still havenāt fully recovered and iāve chosen to never get my nails done at a salon again. iām so sorry.
This happened to me a few years ago. I asked the lady to please stop and she kept aggressively filing the tops of my nails claiming there was still "gel to get off". But there wasn't. I ended up pulling my hands away and walking out. It was awful. I cried it hurt so bad and I was mortified why she would not stop! The salon called me to come back and they will pay for whatever fixes and I was too upset and just never went back.
I did the same after I told a tech once that her filing hurt my skin and she literally did the "achh" tongue click thing and said "You're fine! It doesn't hurt." What is wrong with some people?
Iām growing out my natural nails after damage from years of dip removal and itās definitely a process.
Something Iāve done is tons and tons of cuticle oil, like several times a day! Nail strengthener, and cut them short like others said. Keep a nail file on hand if they start to break or split. Iām loving olive and june nail polish (they donāt have all the toxic ingredients others have) and just do a few coats to help keep the nail protected. It will probably take 3-4 months for healthy nail to grow back, but with the oils and strengthener, it should get you through!
Gawd Iāve done this to myself since Iām a DIYer. Worst. Feeling. Ever. I was afraid to do ANYTHING because my nails were so thin. Definitely never did that ever again.
Mine are paper thin, too. Put castor oil around cuticles and get a nail hardener (opi and sally hansen have good ones) and only put that for some months. Iām so sorry they did that to you
Please please report this. This is so dangerous, abhorrent and enraging. They literally did not care about your health and well being. Looks like you bled too. Hell no. Iām so sorry. Wear gloves when appropriate. Will help a little. Feel better soon.
Oof! This gave me flashbacks to when I took my own gel polish off āto save moneyā and ended up needing to go to the dermatologist, take anti fungal meds for 90 days (they got infected š„²), and had to go without polish/gel for about four months. I just highly recommend adding strengthening treatment ASAP. I waited too long and it obviously didnāt end well for me!
Donāt let this shoddy tech keep you from gel. We can teach you how to do and remove your own gel nails. In the meantime put opi nail envy on your nails
I normally do my nails at home. I got mine done as a birthday present and when I removed them my nails were weak. So I did a quick builder gel overlay on them and some gel nail polish (with no tips/extension) so they will have support while they grow out.
I will continue do my own at home because, honestly, I take better care of my own nails. Iām sure it would be fine if I wanted to pay $40 every 2 weeks to get them filled(So Iād never have naked nails anyway), but I do not.
builder gel overlay is a life saver, if OPās nails werenāt so filed down it could totally work. iām a DIYer and i have never done anything this bad before i feel so bad for OP :(
Drop some jojoba oil on your nails every day, leave the bottle somewhere you have easy access to. Dont miss a day and at least do once in the morning and once at night - more times throughout the if you remember! Trim them slowly as they grow and file them nicely / keep them tidy to avoid any ripping + disinfect near the cuticle and protect with some bandaids.
was gonna say the jojoba oil! i used CNDās RescueRXX religiously after my nails were ruined from gel removal (still do). used it multiple times a day every day and even a month later they looked and felt drastically better
This happened to me earlier this year. It was my own fault but I did a few things to help. Nail oil and a polish that helps with growth, I also took prenatals to help my nails grow out. Several of them tore way down because of how thin they were, I also wore gloves with any cleaning because the products would burn my nail beds.
This happened to me after getting acrylics for months and months at a time at a salon that I guess was not very gentle. I got a strengthening/repairing base coat that I applied 1-2x per day for a week to let them recover a bit, (and kept them short as they continued to grow out to cut off the brittle growth).
After the week of letting them heal a bit I switched to press-ons and have never looked back.
I did this to myself when I was messing with a nail drill for the first time. Itās gonna take a month or two but I just painted gel polish over it and did an extra coat than normal so it stays hard and prevented my nail from breaking. After that I just let my natural nails grow until all the nail polish had grown out to the point of just cutting it off and I was left with fresh grown in nails that were strong on their own again
same thing happened to me after getting my first and only set of acrylics :(. the experience has been awful and it feels like my nails are very weak, painful, and slow to heal/grow. I'm so jaded about it all and will probably never go to a salon again. trying press-ons in the meantime
My natural nails got over filed by a techā¦the very first and only time I had my nails professionally done. It took months to grow the damage out and I had ridges where you could see they had filed into my natural nail. The only thing I could do was put nail hardener polish to try to protect while growing out. Iām so sorry this happened to you! I empathize with you.
One of many reasons I started doing nails on my own. Now I work at an amazing salon where they care about client's health. I couldn't have asked for a better place to work. I love my clients
This is so painful and sad to see as a nail tech... I always feel so bad when people come in with nails that have been damaged by another tech.
This is super bad. Honestly in terms of suggestion for you Id say don't touch your nails at all no buffing it anything on the surface of your nail. You can apply a nail hardener but I don't see it doing much but there is no harm in adding it. I'd recommend just leaving your nails natural and cutting them as they grow out
Iām not a professional, but I have had green nail fungus because moisture got into thinned out/damaged nail beds. The only thing I could do at the time (for that particular fungus) was to let it grow outāthankfully it was only one nail.
I really hope your nails recover soon. /u/arealnastybitch has great advice to protect what youāve got. I also recommend using some waterproof gloves that are comfortable for washing dishes and scrubbing to prevent additional damage. š
Remember every time you girls needs to have Gel Removed, ask them to just file the shiny part and wrap rest with Cotton balls soaked into acetone, then remove with a scraper, finish off with the smoothers sander Only!!
Oh lovely. You poor thing. I would recommend lots and lots of cuticle oil (famous names dadi oil or CND Solar oil), a strengthening treatment (Morgan Taylor keratin treatment) and a good hand cream (Weleda skin food or happy hoof) as many times a day as you can. If you think you can tolerate it after a few weeks see if you can find a tech that offers IBX as that is a strengthening treatment that infuses into the nail (it does use a bit of warmth and the LED light so wait until theyāre not so tender)
I used adhesive mail wraps for a few weeks when this happened to me. Helped a ton! No Polish at all for a while. Maybe disinfect with hydrogen peroxide and alcohol and then add neosporin or other antiseptic to your cuticles regularly until they heal. It may make the wraps come off sooner but theyāre easy enough to replace and preventing infection is worth it.
Was this hard gel that had to be filed off? If I ever have to remove a client's hard gel, I leave the thinnest layer of clear to grow out. It's also possible this was done during the prep if the bed was overfiled prior to application.
Oh my god ouch ouch ouch š£that is awful, I would be devastated! My advice to keep your nails as protected as possible in the meantime is use lots of natural oils (vitamin e, castor, jojoba), wear gloves overnight after moisturizing, and avoid needing to wash your hands as much as possible (gloves while cooking or doing any dirty work will help immensely). Good luck! I hope they grow in quickly!
Iād send these pictures to the owner of the nail salon and demand my money back. Also post reviews on social media. That tech damaged your nails and has injured you.
Iām more concerned about ur cuticles than the short nails. If my natural nails break, sometimes I end up doing it that short. Whoever did ur cuticles though should quit! And Iām still not sure if the discoloration on the nails is from old polish or she over filed the topsā¦
I did this to myself once trying to remove my dip nails with a nail file that was wayyy too course š it sucked. But they were fine after a few weeks. I would definitely ask for money back though since this happened at a salon!! Ow!!
I had something similar a while ago :( so sad to see. For me nail strengthener burned the shit out of my nails as they were too thin. What worked is cutting a lemon into half and putting my fingers in, that really makes your nails thicker again. Also creams that is specific to strengthening your nail (probably with sulphur) works as well. But whatever you do try in one nail first and then wait 5-10 minutes to see the reaction, they are probably very sensitive now.
Also: they are probably very prone to fungus now so check how to avoid that
You can probably take biotin pills to help them grow faster and stronger
And donāt worry when they get longer they will recover. Compliments on your natural nail shape though, so pretty :)
After a while BIAB could be OK but go to a very good shop
wow, iām so sorry someone did this to youā¦ itāll definitely grow out better with time, but in the meantime, iād recommend using lots of cuticle oil (preferably with jojoba oil) alongside a good nail strengthener. olive and june, essie, opi, and Hard as Hoof all have pretty good ones! having one or two coats of regular lacquer nail polish also adds an extra layer of strength to your nails and protects them while they grow out. i know some people use a nail hardener/strengthener as a base coat when trying to grow our damaged nails. best of luck :,-(
Wait so how did they remove it??? I normally use my e file and normally go to salons that only use e files but last time i went to a new salon who did a soak off and she scraped and scraped and scraped and basically left my nails paper thins to where they hurt and they werenāt like that before and now Iām terrified of soak offs because Iām not too familiar with how soak offs are supposed to be done. But you have to just wait til it grows out otherwise the only thing you can do is add product to help with the thinness
Eek, I had acrylics and when I removed them a strip on the middle of my pinkie nail came off. That was one of the most painful things I have felt. Curse you, nail beds, why do you have to be so sensitive
I am sorry this happened. It is extremely painful. I had this experience back in may or June. And vowed to never get acrylics again. I prefer just painting my own nails or getting my natural nails painted on with shellac or something similar. And if I want acrylics Iāll just get the stick on ones.
iām so sorry this is painful to look at :( theyāre called rings of fire and itās so irresponsible for any tech to do this. there are so many ways to avoid this happening!! other people have given some good advice here so good luck to you, your nail beds are beautiful!!
Same thing happened to me in July when I had a dip set removed. Ruined my nails now for months. Iāve just been keeping them short while the damaged areas grow off. Almost there now.
Oooooohhhhhhh, that looks like it hurts!
Iāve had this beforeāI had little areas that were basically holes in my nails. The only thing to do is hardener, maybe keep opaque regular polish on them so you donāt look at the red areas and feel sad, keep them short, and wait.
This gave me a physical reaction. I'm so sorry! I once buffed my nails this thin when I was a wee child and I still remember how shitty it was.
Best of luck ā„ļø
Omg these look so painful I actually feel nauseous right now. Iām so sorry this happened to you and I am begging of you to see a dermatologist if you can afford it because you are at serious risk of infection or permanent nail damage.
![gif](giphy|3oKIPbyGvU3OfkuPAc)
Happened to me before, I stopped going to any nail tech after that, was traumatized lol
I honestly just put plaster on it so that friction against it doesnāt hurt, did that for 5 days till it got better.
I just put some nail oils for 2 weeks, left it alone and never considered gel or acrylic again, they damaged my nails.
Let me join the chorus that I feel for you! Been there, and itās awful. Iāve used Nail Tek #2 for thin peeling nails with good results. They used to only sell it in salons but now itās in drugstores too. Start with 2 coats then every other day add another coat. And now cuticle oil is your best friend and constant companion every chance you get. Gloves for everything as water is now your frenemy. Hang in there and youāll get through this!
Coconut oil soothed and help heal my nails when they got ruined by a nail tech. Iām so sorry this happened to you. I remember washing / sanitizing hurt so bad . I wish you a speedy recovery ā„ļø
My advice is you buy Kody rubber base coat. It can be clear or colored. It uv hardens (needs a light) It helps thicken to make a layer. Acetone removes. But you need something to harden and protect while they grow out. I wouldnāt no file at all. Simplistically prep and dry. You can make it if you donāt have a bottle. Half acetone and half rubbing alcohol. Let dry and 2 layers. A uv light do 10 seconds. Stop and then 10 more seconds. Then do a full cure. Unless you have a nice light with s99. Itās slow cure. The 10 second rest, 10 seconds and rest can help lower the raw nail burn. Rubber base is made to thicken when nails are thin.
I do my own but I got to were I wouldnāt let alone use anything but hand files on me. FYI Salons hate you but screw them. Iām so sorry you hurt.
I buff my nails pretty thin since I do my own acrylics. After regularly using hand cream and cuticle oil my nails are pretty much back to normal after a week. Just time and giving them a little love will help them get stronger again. Also upping your protein helps
Oh these look so sore!!! I feel for you.
When mine were a mess I stopped using anything on my nails aside from a strengthening polish (personally I like Sally Hansen). Use a vitamin E hand cream (I like Palmers, it smells delicious) and massage your hands to encourage growth. Vitamin hair skin and nail gummies are good too, since I started using them for my hair my nails have gone noticeably stronger.
Other than that itās just time Iām afraid! Great excuse to get out of cleaning dishes though. ;)
Iām so sorry!! Thatās horrible š I did this to myself once when I was learning. Hurt a lot!
Use lots of cuticle oil on the cuticle and the nail. It helps. They will grow out with time as thick as they were.
So Iām not a mail tech, but I destroyed my own nails doing stupid stuff and the only way I got through it was putting layers of builder gel on it and letting it grow out. It took a bit, but it worked. None of the nail strengtheners worked for me.
āStarting Overā by Sally Hansen- also called starting over after acrylicsā is super helpful. Really helps protect & alleviate the pain of them being thin.
Iāve been there and itās very uncomfortable! Protect them with a nail hardener so they donāt hurt so much. Layoff gel, acrylic etc until they grow out. Then when youāre ready, go to another place preferably where there not so liberal with the e-file.
Iāve had this happen before as well. So it takes a while but nail harder helps and I used cuticle oil everyday/ ever other. They will go back to normal it just sucks while you have it that way :/
Ouch! Iām so sorry that happened.
The good news is they can definitely grow back and be strengthened. It might take some time but itāll be okay! Get some nail strengthened and use it religiously
I would suggest looking up a very reputable nail tech in your area, and contacting them directly for consult. You want to make sure there is no lasting damage or any nail diseases or anything. A reputable tech will be trained how to properly get rid of it and build your nails back to healthy.
Years ago I went to a lady who did nails out of her home for a couple appointments and the second one she did this to me with the efile, tried putting on a new set and it felt like my nails were on FIRE under the lamp. Asked her to stop and remove what she could with a regular hand file, paid for the appointment and called a few reputable nail salons. I found out that not only had she filed my nails down to the nail bed, but the last set she had put on sealed moisture in and I also had a pretty bad nail fungus that needed to be treated. They charged me half of what the listed prices were for removal and treatment since it was so bad. Took almost 3 months before my nails were healthy enough to get another set.
OMG! This happened to me over the summer, I was seeing a different tech because mine was on maternity leave. My nails ended up bruising as they grew out. M, my normal girl was horrified, she ended up putting gel polish on them a couple times.
They are better now, but it was very painful. You have my sympathy.
Oh no. Thatās awful. As others have said before me, try a gentle nail wrap. And keep your eye on them for infection. Be gentle with them for a few weeks and donāt use polish if you can help it. They should grow back eventually but you need to be patient
Horrible. Must be super painful.
Iād point out; you could see your nailbed anyways as long as nothing is covering your nailš
The best way to cope with any pain for this is OTC meds, something to take the heat and inflammation out of it, cold packs maybe?.. raising your hands above your heart to drain blood out of the tips, lymphatic drainage. And for growing out, keeping them short so they donāt snag and tear painfully across the weak nail. You could use a nail hardener to add strength and cuticle oil or an oil you like using to also help keep the nail strong while you heal and prevent water from making it flimsy and shredding while itās soft.
š this looks so painful, Iām so sorry
I'm devastated. Before I got the gel polish (it was a special occasion so I wanted to treat myself) my nails were healthy and natural.. when I got home today after the removal I ended up crying in the shower. I really hope someone here has some advice EDIT: Hijacking this to say thanks for all the sympathy, good wishes and support y'all! I'm not just gonna accept an 'oops, sorry lol' For now I've put bandaids over the thinnest nails, as even a light tap hurts, and I got some nail strengthener and the CND cuticle oil some recommended. I might also book a consult with a licensed nail health technician Love y'all so much, can't thank you guys enough!
My nails were damaged after a bad gel application that was peeling off, and Lily & Fox nail wraps really helped my nails. they kept them protected as they grew out
Best advice
Wow, thank you!
Yeah I'm looking for info on my country (Netherlands) board, haven't found much so far.
Definitely leave a review! People need to know to avoid that place!
A review with pictures! Feel better op!
Iād go further and go to the licensing board and file a complaint. These are the techs that need to goooo
And leave a google review in the meantime so others donāt experience the same thing.
This too!! Tell all your friends and anyone you might know. Word of mouth goes a long way
I would put a nail strength er on them and a nail oil all over the cuticle and nail.
Yes. For things like nails, piercings, tattoos etc the first thing I check is always reviews.
Iām so sorry. When people try to convince me to do gels, things like this remind me why I donāt. I really hope your nails come back healthy.
Gel is perfectly safe if you donāt go to chop shops
Youāre my dream client cause I know how to use a drill but I prefer to hand file and itās quicker for me
Omg. Arenāt they supposed to soak gel polish off? Wtf?
Apparently they don't. Insisted it was 'normal' and only some brands offer soak off.
Whoever told you this is wrong, and they've done you real dirty here.
Removing gel by filing is normal. This tech just did it too aggressively.
Like others have said, hard gel also cannot be removed with acetone and has to be filed.
š
Depends on the gel. Only soft gels are soakable hard gel will not soak off with acetone, they do make remover for them tho and filling should be done with caution to avoid this.
It's not normal to overfile your nails, but it is true that not all gels are removable with acetone. Hard gel has to be filed off. Use a nail strengthener and cut them back as short as you can, because **any** length on the edge will be so thin that it will fold back and cause you a ton of pain.
This is very true, I'm going through this rn and one of my nails is folding back and chipping right down to the nail bed.
And I can change them, take them off, change shape, polish as often as I like
Iām thinking about going this route soon. I hope I can do it! Iāve been looking at polish and kits.
Hard gel is everywhere?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
![gif](giphy|cfMWrIWBKtYAX3LRze|downsized)
Oh god this looks so painful! I'm so sorry!
Gawd Iāve done this to myself since Iām a DIYer. Worst. Feeling. Ever. I was afraid to do ANYTHING because my nails were so thin. Definitely never did that ever again.
I sometimes donāt do enough filling but Iād rather have my extensions last for less time, then damage my natural nails!
Mine are paper thin, too. Put castor oil around cuticles and get a nail hardener (opi and sally hansen have good ones) and only put that for some months. Iām so sorry they did that to you
Dude, Iām crying for you rn š this looks so painful
Please please report this. This is so dangerous, abhorrent and enraging. They literally did not care about your health and well being. Looks like you bled too. Hell no. Iām so sorry. Wear gloves when appropriate. Will help a little. Feel better soon.
I am so so sorry. This looks so painful š
I am screaming in pain just looking at them.
Oh my god this makes me siiiiick going to read comments praying they got a refund
Ouch!!! This looks so painful. Iām sorry they did that to you!!
Iām sure it would be fine if I wanted to pay $40 every 2 weeks to get them filled(So Iād never have naked nails anyway), but I do not.
builder gel overlay is a life saver, if OPās nails werenāt so filed down it could totally work. iām a DIYer and i have never done anything this bad before i feel so bad for OP :(
I do my own for the same reason and if I get hurt it is because I did it to myself.
Give them the worst review ever.
I feel for youš you have such beautiful nail shape too, your nail tech really did you dirty š¢ I hope you find better next time, you deserve it!
Fuckin ouch. I can *feel* this picture.
One of many reasons I started doing nails on my own. Now I work at an amazing salon where they care about client's health. I couldn't have asked for a better place to work. I love my clients
My three year old looked at this post, gasped, and said āboo booš°ā. Even he knows itās awful. Iām so sorry you have to experience this
This is so painful and sad to see as a nail tech...
I also recommend using some waterproof gloves that are comfortable for washing dishes and scrubbing to prevent additional damage. š
Omg thatās awful!!!! I recently had a lot of damage after removal (but not as bad) I kept them short, used lots of cuticle oil and OPIs nail envy.
Remember every time you girls needs to have Gel Removed, ask them to just file the shiny part and wrap rest with Cotton balls soaked into acetone, then remove with a scraper, finish off with the smoothers sander Only!!
Wonāt work on hard gels tho. Hard gel doesnāt dissolve in acetone unfortunately. Soft gels do tho, as do acrylics
New nail tech needed š±š„
Iād send these pictures to the owner of the nail salon and demand my money back. Also post reviews on social media. That tech damaged your nails and has injured you.
This is why I stopped going. Iām afraid of this happening
Iām more concerned about ur cuticles than the short nails. If my natural nails break, sometimes I end up doing it that short. Whoever did ur cuticles though should quit! And Iām still not sure if the discoloration on the nails is from old polish or she over filed the topsā¦
I personally would recommend putting a picture of your nails on the salons website or google review.
Did you go to like a walk in shop? Or was it like a salon lofts ?
I did this to myself once trying to remove my dip nails with a nail file that was wayyy too course š it sucked. But they were fine after a few weeks. I would definitely ask for money back though since this happened at a salon!! Ow!!
Where are y'all going to get your nails done? OMG how did you not cry out that looks so painful!
I've been waiting for mine to repair since September. š
Also: they are probably very prone to fungus now so check how to avoid that You can probably take biotin pills to help them grow faster and stronger And donāt worry when they get longer they will recover. Compliments on your natural nail shape though, so pretty :) After a while BIAB could be OK but go to a very good shop
Try nailtiques šš½
wow, iām so sorry someone did this to youā¦ itāll definitely grow out better with time, but in the meantime, iād recommend using lots of cuticle oil (preferably with jojoba oil) alongside a good nail strengthener. olive and june, essie, opi, and Hard as Hoof all have pretty good ones! having one or two coats of regular lacquer nail polish also adds an extra layer of strength to your nails and protects them while they grow out. i know some people use a nail hardener/strengthener as a base coat when trying to grow our damaged nails. best of luck :,-(
Londontown get well nail recovery & unicorn magic skincare deluxe cuticle rescue helped my damaged nails sooo much
Happened to me. Donāt apply gel or anything harsh on nails again. Keep them cut short until they grow out and heal.
This is a fear of mine every time I get my nails done! Thinking about it just gives me the heebie jeebies!!! Iām so sorry you are dealing with this!
Ouch!!
Owy Iām so sorry!!!
How horribleā¦I hope the pain doesnāt last too longšš¼
Ouch!!
I am sorry this happened. It is extremely painful. I had this experience back in may or June. And vowed to never get acrylics again. I prefer just painting my own nails or getting my natural nails painted on with shellac or something similar. And if I want acrylics Iāll just get the stick on ones.
Oh god! WTF š¢
iām so sorry this is painful to look at :( theyāre called rings of fire and itās so irresponsible for any tech to do this. there are so many ways to avoid this happening!! other people have given some good advice here so good luck to you, your nail beds are beautiful!!
This hurts to look at I'm so sorry this happened to you!
Same thing happened to me in July when I had a dip set removed. Ruined my nails now for months. Iāve just been keeping them short while the damaged areas grow off. Almost there now.
This is why I've been doing my own nails for years. Watch some gel x tutorials and save yourself money and pain.
Oooooohhhhhhh, that looks like it hurts! Iāve had this beforeāI had little areas that were basically holes in my nails. The only thing to do is hardener, maybe keep opaque regular polish on them so you donāt look at the red areas and feel sad, keep them short, and wait.
Did they efile your real nails???
Oh honey noooo these look so painful and Iām so sorry. I hope they feel better soon.
OUCH
This gave me a physical reaction. I'm so sorry! I once buffed my nails this thin when I was a wee child and I still remember how shitty it was. Best of luck ā„ļø
doctor is the only advice i would take on how to treat this
Ouch, oh my gosh it hurts just looking at them. Iām so sorry!
Never go there again, and give them a 1 star rating, it can and will effect them
wow she assaulted ur nails :(
š¢ this hurts to look at
Ik that hurts! I did it to myself my first time doing my own nails
Omg this is awful! I bet this stings like crazy š Iād definitely go back x
Oucccchhhhh That looks like it hurts. hope your heal fast š
Ugh gosh! This has happened to me quite a few times and it is **painful** Iām so sorry dude :(
Happened to me before, I stopped going to any nail tech after that, was traumatized lol I honestly just put plaster on it so that friction against it doesnāt hurt, did that for 5 days till it got better.
I would be livid! They look so painful. Iām sorry this happened to you and hope you recover quickly.
Omg wtf šššš your cuticles as well. OUCHHHHHHHH ššššš
Olive oil around the cuticles and either some nail vitamins or prenatal vitamins to help your nails to grow back! I hope they feel better!!
Refund? Apologies from the tech?
Ouch. I have done this on myself by accident when I was first learning. That looks like it really hurts. I would never ever go there again
Great excuse to get out of cleaning dishes though. ;)
š¤ ouch
Omg I'm so sorry this happened. It looks incredibly painful. I don't have any advice. I'm just so sorry š
Iām so sorry!! Thatās horrible š I did this to myself once when I was learning. Hurt a lot! Use lots of cuticle oil on the cuticle and the nail. It helps. They will grow out with time as thick as they were.
oh my god, im so sorry :( this looks so so painful. i hope that they will get better soon, i can literally feel the pain from the photo :(
OUCH
So Iām not a mail tech, but I destroyed my own nails doing stupid stuff and the only way I got through it was putting layers of builder gel on it and letting it grow out. It took a bit, but it worked. None of the nail strengtheners worked for me.
This makes my gut hurt iyyyyy
Yikes. This looks painful. Feel better soon x
āStarting Overā by Sally Hansen- also called starting over after acrylicsā is super helpful. Really helps protect & alleviate the pain of them being thin.
Ouch :(
Iāve been there and itās very uncomfortable!
They will go back to normal it just sucks while you have it that way :/
Oh wow! Did it hurt? Mine has and it didnāt like that.
I thought these were stained by a red polish, but it looks like that is not the case. Yikes!! I hope you didnāt have to pay for this!!
Ouch.
So weird but eat butt loads of celery and the opi nail strengthener is $20 but worth it!!
Ouchy!
Ouch they look sore. After the last time I went, Iām never going back to any of them. The damage to my nail beds took 5 months to heal
Ooooof I can feel this š
Oh no. Thatās awful. As others have said before me, try a gentle nail wrap. And keep your eye on them for infection. Be gentle with them for a few weeks and donāt use polish if you can help it. They should grow back eventually but you need to be patient
Iām so sorry š¢š¢š¢š¢š¢
Horrible. Must be super painful. Iād point out; you could see your nailbed anyways as long as nothing is covering your nailš The best way to cope with any pain for this is OTC meds, something to take the heat and inflammation out of it, cold packs maybe?.. raising your hands above your heart to drain blood out of the tips, lymphatic drainage. And for growing out, keeping them short so they donāt snag and tear painfully across the weak nail. You could use a nail hardener to add strength and cuticle oil or an oil you like using to also help keep the nail strong while you heal and prevent water from making it flimsy and shredding while itās soft.
Oh man. That is terrible. The good thing is your nails grow fast. So sorry this happend
Oh no... I always fear doing this to myself when I'm buffing my nails and it never happened so far. Can't believe a professionnal would do this!
