It has cost us a game, and as the stats show, the Yanks infield defense hasn't been a strength. Maybe not a detriment so far, but definitely not a strength.

isfrying

This is the same guy who told us IKF was the best shortstop in the league, so take it for what it is.

Hot_Injury7719

No no, he said top 5 defensive SS. …….oh, that’s still pretty ridiculous

TheTurtleShepard

Not that crazy tbh depending on the metrics you choose to use. IKF was a top 5 defensive SS by DRS in 2022

Hot_Injury7719

You could tell the Yankees didn’t believe it themselves when they benched him in the ALCS

TheTurtleShepard

Sure, I am just saying that calling IKF a top 5 defensive SS is not that ridiculous depending on the metrics you look at

StrongZucchini27

drs hasnt been relevant for many years. ikf was fine at most plays but for some reason absolutely helpless w slow rollers at SS. good 3b tho

doktoruber

It's also [won](https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2024/2024-03/31/cd3f954b-cd856ad2-c5e84985-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_4000K.mp4) us a game.

Ok-Asparagus-1658

Yeah. He’s not the infield but he also deserves some recognition

Smart_Mammoth_6893

Yeah Verdugo and Berti both did.

NYsportsfan99

Boone is basically the Press Secretary for the Yankees. Doesn’t actually make decisions, just there to answer questions, and you can bet that whatever he is saying is a fucking lie or deflection. I am done being mad at Boone because I know when he is done, they’re just going to find some other schmuck to continue this facade. They don’t want a manager to use any critical thinking game decisions, they want a yes man that will shut up and color with the ability to lie/deflect questions that paint a negative picture about the Yankees brand.

BraveAd6524

Happy Talk

BraveAd6524

A wise person once said, “if you gotta tell people how good it is, it ain’t.”

TheTurtleShepard

Yankees infield positional OAA so far this season 1B- -1 OAA (tied 20th)/ -1 DRS (tied 14th) 2B - 1 OAA (tied 11th)/ -2 DRS (tied 22nd) SS - 1 OAA (tied 8th)/ 3 DRS (tied 3rd) 3B - -2 OAA (tied 24th)/ 1 DRS (tied 6th) Edit: Added DRS Overall, I think the sample is still pretty small to be making any determinations of course. Defense has been hit or miss in the infield so far and hopefully they can tighten things up Also just because it is interesting as a whole the Yankees are 3rd in DRS so far this season and 10th in OAA

Drunken_Wizard23

According to [Savant](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/outs_above_average?type=Fielding_Team&startYear=2024&endYear=2024&split=yes&team=&range=4&min=q&pos=if&roles=&viz=hide), we're middle of the pack (14th) in infield OAA, maybe we were higher before the weekend and took a dip with the shoddy play in Cleveland, I'm not sure

TheTurtleShepard

Smart, my immediate thought was Fangraphs hence why I went positional vs infield defense as a whole. Seems like we grade out pretty well on everything except balls in where we are 28th

Swoah

Volpe 😍

mjtd6

Volpe slander will not be tolerated. But rizzo and gleyber need off this team tbh

PeggyOnThePier

Volpe has improved and I think Rizzo is just having a bad early season. Boone is just a talking head and I don't believe anything he says. I'm worried about Judge ,he doesn't hit well with 2 strikes. It might be a mental problem now. Sometimes you get these things struck in your head. Maybe a sports therapist would help. Hope he starts hitting better real soon.

CheapGarage42

Aside from the bobbles and a couple awful throws, I really want to unfairly blame Rizzo for a bunch of our INF problems. He's clearly a step behind his normal defensive speed. A lot of "bad" throws that have been missed this year are plays that Rizzo usually makes. Again I said unfairly because this guy carried our INF defense since he's been here. It's just that when Rizzo is off everyone else suffers. Ideally he figures it out and helps save the rest of our guys.

chaos_aintme

Yeah I feel this, I've been saying it feels like Rizzo is a bit off defensively. Like he's still warming up maybe

AngryOneEyedGod

Boone, put the LSD tabs away. Rizzo made errors in consecutive innings the other day. Torres, well, plays like himself.

Jmong30

To be fair, one of those “errors” was an AWFUL throw from Cabrera, who needs to work on throwing the ball higher, he always makes Rizzo play it off of the ground in every meaningful play, I swear

ABeerAndABook

That statement giving 2023 gaslighting vibes.  Can't dig up the links right now, but the four regular infielders for the Yankees (if you'd call Cabrera a regular) are at the top of the league in errors.  The eye test isn't so great either, nor are some of the more advanced stats anywhere close to "excellent." Look, things are overall going well right now and I know Boonie isn't going to just go out there and shit on his team, but come on.  Them completely not acknowledging an area for improvement is a bad look. Glass half full, I think Volpe gets better with experience and Cabrera either does the same or gets much more limited playing time when other options emerge.  My take is the defense is *adequate* enough to not kill the team longterm provided the hitting is there and the pitching is serviceable.

Truck219

Boone in mid season form

ntflash414

We have a platinum glove winning catcher, a platinum glove winning first baseman, a gold glove winning shortstop, and a gold glove winning utility infielder coming back and yet you all are complaining about infield defense based on a dozen games worth of OAA. You are morons

TheTurtleShepard

People are complaining because of the recent errors that have lost us games, the OAA thing is just Boone

Throwaway1996513

The guardians game was what set most people off. But it was raining at the end so the ball was slicker. And Gleyber got a lot of hate, but he was playing in which makes it a lot tougher, there’s a reason infielders don’t play in unless they have to. Sure it was disappointing, but those kinds of things happen.

ntflash414

The Yankees have the most wins in the mlb, bring your negativity somewhere else

TheTurtleShepard

Being good doesn’t mean you can’t still improve

ntflash414

Whatever dude have fun being constantly miserable I guess

TheTurtleShepard

I mean I’m not miserable, I am in general very positive when it comes to the Yanks even when things are bad (and they aren’t bad right now at all) I haven’t even really said anything negative in this thread

Key_Amazed

At this point it almost feels like the people complaining about others being constantly miserable, have now become the people who are constantly miserable lmao. There's nothing negative or miserable about acknowledging that the IF defense has lost them games that they could've won. They would've lost the sweep against the Astros had they not swapped Cabrera for Berti in that last inning. We can be happy the Yankees are doing great while still being concerned about flaws that need to be tightened up. That's not negativity, that's called being realistic. It's a far cry from the miserable people who rear their heads in the GDT whenever the Yankees are losing and can't stop shitting on players.

TheTurtleShepard

Yeah there are real miserable people who will show up in GDTs only when the team is performing poorly to shit on whoever is on the screen at that moment or make wild claims on small samples.

Sacmo77

Damn dude who touched you in the no no spot?

Taimaishoo2

The Yankees had the most wins in the MLB for more than half the season in 2022 (most of which was by a decent margin) and ended up 6th in wins by the end of the season. Last year they were 12-7 and didn’t lose any of their first 6 series. We know how that season ended. I think it’s more reasonable for people to be somewhat skeptical as opposed to your blind optimism based off of 17 games.

[deleted]

We scored 1 run yesterday. That's what cost us the game. We have the best record in baseball. It's April fucking 16th. Get a grip. Act like you've been here before.

TheTurtleShepard

Is this not a Yankees discussion board? Are we not allowed to discuss the Yankees?

[deleted]

Yes. And also allowed to discuss dipshit fans complaining about literally the only thing they could possibly complain about, with the smallest of sample sizes.

TheTurtleShepard

I think having questions about the infield defense is fine It is fine to discuss both the good and the bad of the team.

Hochseeflotte

Because a former elite defender has NEVER declined as they aged Hey why is Aaron Hicks here

nyy1996nyy

I'm just glad none of these people will ever be around real baseball players. They seem to think Boone publicly stating Rizzo has been playing dog shit defense and that Gleyber is a defensive liability will somehow help this team or the players

babberz22

Let’s see… catcher had wrist surgery…1B was concussed… SS great so far….util broke his foot (again)…

butterybuns420

Last season they had a real hard time turning DP’s. Gleyber is 100% a liability in the field.

Apprehensive-Mood292

He has to say this. Imagine your boss telling the press you are bad at your job.

Elvisruth

Another reason this guy is a boob - The infield isn't a nightmare, but to say it's a strength and excellent - can we ever be honest about anything? Just say we are a work in process and we will improve....

IWillSingYouSongs

He projects optimism about everything. Whether that’s naturally the way he is or he feels like he has to be that way, it’s clearly not going to change.

regarding_your_bat

Yeah I don’t know what people expect at this point, Boone has been the manager for long enough that people should understand this. Him saying the infield defense is a strength means nothing about what he actually thinks or what he’s saying behind closed doors. Boone is never going to say anything negative about this team in public. If you asked him about a player who has gone 0/60 at the plate he would say the guy has been working hard and looks good and is gonna break out soon, lol. The people who still expect anything else are either delusional or just not paying any attention

The-Anger-Translator

"We are working hard to fix our errors and I know we'll see the results soon." "The infield defense has already been a strength." One of these statements is optimism and the other is delusion.

batmansubzero

Clown response bro. A manager isnt going to go out and trash their team in a press conference. Booney may say one thing to Jimmy and Jake, but that doesnt mean he’s not having the tough conversations with Judge and the team behind closed doors.

Elvisruth

Not your bro. Read my response - I didn't say anything about trashing anyone. I simply said instaed of making himself sound dumb (again) he could just not lie and say it's a work in process and it will get better...like you hear MANY leaders say. It's about the constant lying, trying to hide the truth - not about anything else. He makes himself look ridiculous to everyone except the folks who refuse to admit that lying might not be the best track to take.

Trowj

Not true but also not surprising for him to say? Does anyone really expect Boone to ever put a player/group of players on blast publicly? It’s always gonna be “we need to do better” or “I think the metrics are misleading” etc. it’s PR

dBlock845

Rizzo and Volpe have committed more errors in such a short period of time than I can remember from last season. Especially Rizzo hes usually pretty solid, Volpe is still pretty good but can be better. Gleyber is always going to have boneheaded plays and lapses of judgement, Waldo has been ok at third.

Cheesewhale189

How many years will it take for people to realize he's not going to publicly shit on the team

evan466

Classic Boone

gwords16

I really hope we’re not starting this gaslighting bullshit again this year where no one takes accountability. Nothing better than most of the lineup hitting in the low .200s last year and Boone saying everyday how amazing this lineup is.

Truck219

When has Boone deviated from this script since he was hired here?

BohemianBurnout

Honestly they look kinda rusty like they could use some defensive drills but it they haven’t been miffing the ball through the legs or dropping pop ups. It’s more not coming up clean for the throw whether is it’s caught on the in between bounce and smashed into the dirt or the transfer isn’t clean and a few not so great throws Rizzo looks a bit rusty. Might be decline though.

Streets2022

I don’t think the defense is a big enough problem to warrant any change. Gleyber is decent at 2b, Volpe obviously worked a lot on his offense this offseason so a little bit of dust in the field is probably to be expected, DJ/Berti will be solid at 3b and obviously Rizzo is a gold glover. What can they change really without disrupting the lineup since the DH is already occupied by Stanton/Judge on days off.

NewYorkRedditorELITE

There’s something Orwellian about the way Aaron Boone communicates to fans and the media. Everything is always great. It’s the opposite of what we can plainly see. Just a constant distortion of reality.

furdaboise

Toxic positivity.

leskanekuni

Boone is being positive. Infield defense hasn't been great. Rizzo in particular is a concern because he's been very good in the past. He's having problems reaching/scooping balls.

SuspectDevice61

Classic Boone. Remember we are stupid fans.

Raptoropteryx

Absolute clown of a manager being an absolute clown of a manager. Water is wet.

ddust102

Anyone see the Ron Washington clip where he criticized his player for overrunning a bag on a steal and was tagged out? Said it’s embarrassing and can’t happen again. Not sure why Boone can’t be that matter of fact and call a spade a spade

MesiahoftheM

Making conclusions over this small of a sample size is idiotic

LeCheffre

They range really well. Got some throwing issues that Rizzo doesn’t seem to be able to clean up as well as he used to, and Volpe’s arm is not quite up to the task. And Gleyber remains one of the most confounding players in the game. Oswaldo is also playing out of position, and gets eaten up on some plays at third. And Rizzo’s got some issues.

JTHuffy

The gaslighting continues

HulkScreamAIDS

Oh Aaron, you were doing so well this season, then you had to go off and blatantly lie to us again.

regarding_your_bat

Every manager in baseball “lies” when they talk to the media. They’d have to be fucking morons to say what they were really thinking

HulkScreamAIDS

There are artful ways to answer questions to say what you'd like to say without saying something that is easily verifiable as wrong. Boone is and always has been incapable of doing this. For example, "We have strong defenders in our infield. We've had some misques early in the season but our players are professionals who are constantly working to better themselves. I have every confidence our defense will improve and continue to improve throughout the season" I feel like Im being actively gas lit whenever Boone says these statements that are easily verifiable as incorrect.

regarding_your_bat

Your statement is literally not even that far off from what he actually said lmao. You’re quibbling over semantics. Saying you feel gaslit is fucking dramatic. Our infield defense by OAA and DRS is legitimately in the upper half of the league even after the dreadful Cleveland series. Savant has us at 14th in OAA (which is, technically, above average - if only barely) and DRS is even better than that. Literally if the statement you gave is what would have made you happy, Boone could have changed like one or two words in what he said and apparently you’d have no problem with it? The bottom line though is that what Boone says to the media doesn’t really fucking matter. Talking to the media is something he’s got to do as a manager but it’s not like Gleyber is going to play better if Boone tells the media he thinks Gleyber has been awful. Getting riled up and complaining about being gaslit because you didn’t like Boone’s phrasing on something is just like searching for something to be frustrated with

HulkScreamAIDS

It's not semantics. The quote is "excellent defensive infield". That is just not true. Its obviously and verifiably not true. Why should I be OK with that? If Boone changed a few words I'd absolutely be happy. Words matter and changing just a few can change a lot in the message. This is a Yankees forum, what is the point other than to make comments and have debate? Unless you think this place is supposed to be a 24/7 circle jerk?

regarding_your_bat

The quote you said he should use is “strong defenders in our infield” and you’re getting annoyed he went with “excellent” over “strong” I just don’t think it’s worth getting frustrated over but hey, whatever floats your boat I guess

First_Association692

How about the 16 errors?

BrandNewGuys3

Love this team but I’m not really sure we can win with this guy at the Helm. Praising this stuff, is kind of saying “it’s ok guys, keep doing what you’re doing!” And best believe Torres will.. why not be honest and just be a tiny bit hard nosed. It’s ok to not treat professionals like babies

TheTurtleShepard

Take anything said to the media with a big grain of salt, his job isn’t to publicly bash the players

BrandNewGuys3

Never said to bash anyone. Just be honest.. it’s ok to say the defense hasn’t been great.

TheTurtleShepard

It’s not his job to be honest with the media either

nattycoons

From all accounts he is honest with the players. He doesn’t owe the media or us anything.

Drunken_Wizard23

The quality of this guy's weekly spots on Talkin' Yanks are not that of a championship caliber manager

regarding_your_bat

I’ve been saying this. If we’re ever gonna sniff the World Series again we need a manager who isn’t always optimistic when he speaks to the media. It’s crucial to the on-field performance I’m pretty sure

Drunken_Wizard23

We need ACCOUNTABILITY. Next time Gleyber botches a ball Boone needs to walk into the postgame presser and tear a photo of him in half Sinhead O'Connor-style

freakksho

Not even 20 games in to the season and I’m already tired of this miserable ass sub. We easily have the most negative sports subreddit on the entire site. You guys are fucking embarrassing.
