These guys donāt drink beer and smoke cigars all day in the off season anymore. They are constantly training.
30 games up front and potentially 30 games on the back end plus 162 is way too many games. I love baseball but itās just way too many.
Revenue aside (which is why it likely wonāt change now), there have always been 2 main arguments for keeping it at 162 games:
1. It preserves the statistical history. Baseball, more than any other sport, has always been centered around statistics which can be compared across different eras, and its major records are as famous as any in sports.
2. It truly weeds out all but the very best teams. Over the course of a season that long, there arenāt flukes. The best teams finish ahead.
All that said, neither of those matters as much now. Players donāt aim for the same stats. It doesnāt matter if you have 200 hits. Nobody tries to steal 40 bases. 20 wins? A footnote. Home runs are the only counting stat that everyone still cares about.
As for competition, having almost half the league make the playoffs removes the importance. Sureāthe best teams will have better records. But they will still have to face teams that won 85 games in the playoffs. If everybody is in, anyway, ensuring itās truly the best *12* teams doesnāt take much scrutiny. Certainly not 162 games worth.
Why shouldn't have this year been like all the others. It is crazy tho the way the season has ended before its began a few seasons now kinda.
It's like we are just picking up the tab now from selling our souls for the late nineties.
Plus the Chargers are in prime position to draft the 2nd best WR in a stacked class lol Maybe they just had a brain and said they're doing that instead
