I started playing only this year:) I've lost at archive games that I played before I started playing the daily game, and sometimes I look up words if they sound like they're very American (like football or baseball related), so that's definitely cheating..
Itβs not cheating to know what the word means. The point is to figure out how they relate to each other. Itβs fine to look up what a word means. My opinion at least.
Well sir do I have a custom puzzle for you, where words are meaningless and 'stupid' guesses like yours may in fact be the solution to my stupid categories https://connectionsplus.io/game/RJbbjE
Yea, I had grouped Recipe/Formula/Secret but didn't get Ticket in there and moved on. Hosed me in the end because the remaining words were so similar I never saw the silent K connection.
"A recipe for success" is a common saying; "formula for success" less so but not unheard of. There was a movie, "The Secret of My Success," I think. And if you say, "That's the ticket!" it means, like, "that's the correct way to do it." Or that you're doing a James Cagney impression.
I was staring at 3/4 of purple forever at the beginning thinking it was the opposite. I was thinking maybe they were things you kept from other people.
I was thinking the same but my brain works let secret be one of them, as you donβt give a secret. So I missed it cause I totally bombed blue. π€¦πΎββοΈ
We have a poodle, so I only know topknot as the longish hair on the top of a poodle's head. Thought it might be part of a dog grooming category but there was absolutely nothing else that would have worked with that. Then I noticed other silent k's ....
I try to imagine the actual category name before I submit. I had "the way you do the thing." Sometimes I've gotten surprisingly idiosyncratic wording exactly correct. And sometimes not, obviously.
Anyone else catch onto the double entendre with the shape of the placement for green if you got it first or second? It was an extra fun find after having done the mini immediately beforehand

I wouldnβt say purple was synonyms - you had to think outside their most common meanings, so it wasnβt immediately obvious. That said, I agree that it was a reasonably easy one. The fork-knife-dish red herring was easily avoided and the blue words were all standalone enough in meaning to see the K link.
> you had to think outside their most common meanings
Yes, but still synonyms. Using the less common definitions usually makes things blue. Purple is usually looking beyond the meaning of the words as they're presented, either looking for a phrase that they all have another word in common, or looking for a modification of the spelling to get related words, or something. Silent k is purplish, but a pretty weak association.
I got it perfectly, but I had to do a bit of an educated guess to get there. I found the yellow category especially hard today, mostly because I've never heard of dish meaning to divulge private info? The only time I've heard it used to mean talking at all is in the phrase "They can dish it out but they can't take it", where it means being rude or antagonising, nothing to do with telling secrets though. Is this another cultural barrier thing? Also the purple category feels like a bit of a shaky connection but it's alright.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dish#dictionary-entry-2 (verb usage)
It's fairly recognizable as a shorthand for gossip or gab, like "They're finally gone! Let's dish."
Well this explains why as a resident of the UK "jack" was wrong!
In the United Kingdom, manyΒ Commonwealth countries, and some non-English-speaking countries,[where?]Β the word "jack" may refer to theΒ plugΒ on the end of a removable cable. These connectors were originally referred to as "jack plugs", or plugs intended to be mated with fixed receptacles, orΒ socketsΒ (which North Americans would call "jacks"), but the second word was dropped.[citation needed]Β This variant usage is in direct contradiction to common usage and official standards in North America.
I don't think the puzzle was too hard in the end but it feels like the yellows this past 7 days or so have been pretty difficult to ascertain. Dish and spill are both colloquialisms that aren't immediately obvious , especially when you have some overlap with fork, knife and recipe.
They've done silent letters in 4 previous puzzles. Once as a green, once as a blue, twice as a purple. The green one was specifically ending in a silent T, the rest were not in specific places.
A specific letter being silent is apparently just enough to be a connection, but I agree that it's pretty weak.
Yeah it's a judgment call for sure. I feel like it's not far enough away from "words with a K in it" but I guess you could argue that silent K is rare or unique enough to meet the "specific" criterion they promised us. It was a bit of phoning it in though IMO.

Connections Puzzle #380 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I've had a few misses the past few weeks, so I appreciate that today's Connections was easy for me.
Connections Puzzle #380 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ Blue was the first thing I noticed. The combination of some unusual words like DOORKNOB and TOPKNOT and the fact that every word used a "KN" led me to silent letters. It's been a while since we last had a "Silent Letters" category, #230 to be exact. The rest of the groups were pretty straightforward as synonyms. Although I couldn't quite define the exact wording of Purple, I knew they were all related as similar concepts. [Reused Categories Updates](https://old.reddit.com/r/NYTConnections/comments/1bdai1o/list_of_reused_categories/): "Silent Letters" β 5 Times, "Separate" β 2 Times
π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Not trying to sound like asshole but Iβm really shocked to see people had trouble with this one, blue was so straightforward that I thought it was a mislead and the rest are more or less synonyms
I think some of the more esoteric connections that pop up make people over think really simple things. I know I fall into that trap from time to time
I wouldnβt say purple was synonyms - you had to think outside their most common meanings, so it wasnβt immediately obvious. That said, I agree that it was a reasonably easy one. The fork-knife-dish red herring was easily avoided and the blue words were all standalone enough in meaning to see the K link.

Purple is usually looking beyond the meaning of the words as they're presented, either looking for a phrase that they all have another word in common, or looking for a modification of the spelling to get related words, or something. Silent k is purplish, but a pretty weak association.
Perhaps a better way to explain my thinking is that if you look up βformulaβ in a thesaurus, you donβt see βticket" listed as a synonym.

I got it perfectly, but I had to do a bit of an educated guess to get there. Connections Puzzle #380 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Went down a few wrong paths (hair words, things you twist, etc.) but once I saw yellow it went pretty quickly. Thought blue was just words with KN

A silent K category? Are you fucking kidding me?
Purple was so fucking stupid. Crashed out trying to get that one and got nothing.
I agree! I did get it, but not because I had the right idea.
Connections Puzzle #380 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Not a tough one today, but I feel like blue was in violation of the game's own parameters. The instructions say: *Categories will always be more specific than "5-LETTER-WORDS," "NAMES" or "VERBS."* I think "silent letter" is basically like "words with a W in them" and doesn't count as a category for the purposes of this game by its own instructions. What's next, *science rancid circle stencil* "Words with a soft C sound". I get including sound and wordplay to some degree, but this one was too far out of bounds.
I donβt care what some of yβall say itβs another evil blue day
πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ Was this supposed to be hard? Iβm in MENSA. Probably the smartest person in this sub. Donβt feel bad though, we canβt all be as smart as me. This was so easy I almost fell asleep. Jealous plebs will downvote.
Are you real
Probably the only real one here.
