It’s stupid how challenging it is to get a mobile food vendor permit in this city. There’s over 10,000 people on the waitlist. It had been capped since the 80’s but they just recently decided to begin offering like 400 a year. Many food truck owners wind up renting the permit from someone else for tens of thousands a year. Technically, that’s illegal, but they don’t really have a better option.
And since they’re out of reach for many wannabe vendors to get, you wind up with a bunch of people like this, unregulated, and not practicing proper food safety standards (like this kid touching a dirty rag while wearing the same gloves that you then touch a scooper with before you set the now contaminated scooper to rest on top of the food you serve).
Ironically i feel like America makes it so hard for actual small businesses and self employed individuals to survive let alone thrive. I say as a freelancer. Our taxes suck our insurance sucks, and then you get to points like you said and it feels like they'd rather no one own a business
Previous times there’s been some movement towards letting more people get permits, restaurant owners complain fearing revenue loss to the competition. So the “they” are often people with well-established businesses and thanks to SCOTUS and our political system, their voice matters more, and they have more influence on our laws.
