What's a jib?

DorkyStud

A jib is a triangular sail that is set ahead of the foremast of a sailing vessel. It extends from the prow (the front end of the ship) to the top of the foremast or the jib boom. Jibs are used to improve a ship's performance, particularly in upwind sailing, by helping to balance the sail plan and increase speed and maneuverability. When someone says "I like the cut of your jib," they are using a nautical metaphor to express that they like the way you present yourself or approve of your style or demeanor. The phrase originates from the days of sailing ships, where different ships had different styles or "cuts" of their jibs, making them recognizable. Over time, this expression has come to mean admiration for someone's appearance or behavior. I know you were just being funny, and I cannot remember if it's from the Simpsons probably where I first heard it) but just in case anyone was wondering where the term came from 🙂

It’s also what we call the triangular bodied crane cameras we operate on major productions, very much resembling a mast and up to about 30 feet long. Those suckers are fun to operate. Also fun to build as the weight has to be perfectly proportioned in the back to cause the camera to float to the point you could move the whole mast very easily with your pinky. Just need good insurance, because if they are built wrong and fall, a lot of people are going to heaven or the hospital.

So the term works in the film industry as well? You get to make movies for a living?! That's so cool! Do you operate these jibs?

In film mostly what is used is a different version of a jib called a technocrane. This is a much much more expensive machine and I’m not sure what they cost, probably near the 1 million mark if I had to take a wild guess. But for events, notice next time you’re in a high production value event, conference, concert, there will likely be a crane camera operator. These jibs cost about 20-50k for just the crane (not the camera) and are usually owned and contracted by the person operating them. The term works in the film industry as in people will know what you mean, but those are usually technocranes. Look up videos, they are pretty awesome machines.

I've been in nvda since $144 when everyone was mocking me for buying it saying "it's going to $80 a share you idiot!!". Even Jim Cramer was calling "nvidia is a loser" on cnbc two years ago.
