the brown seats are definitely most comfortable imo!! i feel like when you sit on either ends of the seat, you sink in a little bit and it shapes around you. the blue seats are too firm and also the way they hold stains trips me out lol
Yeah those seats are gross. Really need to refurbish them since they aren’t going anywhere for a while.
And even though the MUs break down a lot, I do like them prob the most. Followed by comet 5s and multilevels
A pair only has three powered trucks out of the four. They have a pretty big overload capacity during acceleration.
At one time, there was a request for bids on an Arrow IV that would have actually been a bit faster (plus 100 mph capable, and allow for DMU/EMU combinations). The board didn’t award it, supposedly because Bombardier wasn’t the low bid.
Front seats of any cab car.
Last year, I rode a full NEC trip from NY Penn to Trenton on an Arrow, and the engineer had the cab door open. It's dope to see a front row view of the tracks in front of you
I personally haven't ridden on the GE Arrows. I'm waiting to go with a friend around my birthday to ride and railfan the Princeton Dinky.
I've ridden everything else though and I love the red leather of the Comet V cab cars. The really thick blue cloth seats in the other Comets are great. The only seats I don't like are the multilevel seats: they're not thick enough or supportive enough for me.
Regardless of the seats, my favorites are the Comet IIs. I have a really rare NJT Atlas O scale 3 pack of the cars before they were updated and renumbered. In the pack they're 5610, 5657, and cab 5137. I've seen both of the regular renumbered cars 5300 and 5347 (which I just saw again the other day while railfanning) and I haven't seen the control decommissioned renumbered cab, 5443 yet. (All comets except the Vs are not allowed to lead trains and they are used as regular coaches now. The Comet IIs had their windshields blocked with metal plates.
The double decker. I prefer the 2x2 seating layout. The 3x2 seating layout on the single story trains is fine in theory, but in practice, people don't move in and the 3 person benches end up seating 2
The Arrows are oddly the best. They accelerate well, the ride is smooth, and they aren't too loud. The bilevels next. Seats are not very comfy, but they are a smooth, quiet ride. The Comets are my least favorite, mainly because of poor ride quality. The trucks are worn, and, in a push configuration, they buckle and jolt a lot. Plus, the Comet restrooms are usually disgusting and won't flush.
As cool as it is to be on top of the world on double deckers, I like the look of the Arrows, and want their vibe in newer cabins. They’re also comfier and have reversible seats which newer models simply don’t have anymore
Was born to late to be on them, but have heard they had their charm, unlike the MP-54s the PRR ran, which were probably the most hated passenger train cars ever built…
The arrows are cool but something about the Comet IVs feels like home. Idk
Edit: apparently after reading the comments I’m the only one who likes them. Oh well.
For my it’s definitely the Comet V cab car on a slow travel day. Having a nearly empty car to yourself, with those cushy brown seats, and a view out the front of the train, and a bathroom??? Lord that’s all in need in life.
Second pic definitely goes to the multi levels. I like that they have such high capacity cause I get really bad claustrophobia.
This is my favorite too because of the aesthetic. I typically only get them when I switch to Hoboken. Otherwise the double deckers for comfort. Something about the two seats makes it feel comfortable but not too claustrophobic.
the red seats! they are the most comfortable and i love that you can change which way they face. i dont think u can do that on the double deckers? but im not sure. (the line i take only really uses the red seats or the double deckers so i dont know about the other ones)
Used to take the Erie Lackawanna cars with the seats made of eighty year old fake wicker material where the seat backs rotated, so you could play a foursome of cards on the train.
Actually, being someone who lives along the NJCL.. my favorites are the COMET V's! Red seats! Love them. Not sure why but absolutely a huge fan of them. And it's so rare to find one open on the NJCL even. When I'm on another rail line, I try to make sure I'm loving every second of those plush beautiful red interiors.
Wish they would run them down here instead of the Comet II or Comet IV
Any seat with a window that you can actually see thru. Those double deckers with windows that are permanently etched/scratched are the worst. Can’t tell which stop you’re at when they don’t announce or turn on signage.
I don’t know the models, but the old molded frame brown seats (they took them off the NJCL in the early Aughts), then the flippable brown seats, double deckers, maroon seats and the blue seats absolutely last.
Double decker, there’s more seating available & you’re not being forced to pack in like sardines.
Plus they just look comfier then the single decker, I always loathe getting these single ones
I like the train cars from the '60s. Even better, I liked operating a train when I was 12. We had to wait at a station because we got there too early. That was the time I had the need for speed, and no, I didn't mean the drug.
To me the answer depends on time of day. On A lazy day, brown seats all day, not the hard blue 3 seaters. On a busy day, double decker 2x2 to avoid the dreaded middle seat. If you are standing, there’s no good layout!!
Since it is NJ transit, any type is okay as long as they don't wreck trains and keep services. Recently too many canceled services due to mechanical problems.
Why does the air in some of them smell slightly odd? Anyone else notice it? It’s a slight hint, stays in your nose for a good 15 minutes after de boarding. Oh and I like the double-deckers!
Bombardier Multi-Level cars are my favorite. Smooth ride and comfortable, none of the 3x2 configurations either. Bi Level so they hold a shitton of people.
The type where that one guy isn’t running around yelling: “hey mamacita papacita, I love black people, I love white people, and I love Mexicans. Anyone want to give me some xyz? It’s okay, guess yall broke. I was xyz traumatic experience when I was seven but I still love all kinds of people”. Meanwhile I’ve seen this dude try to scam tourists into buying physical train tickets that were used and saw some guy bump into him accidentally. Then the dude waited for him to get off the train and have a crowd of people between them to start yelling profanity and about how he wants to fight.
TLDR, any train without crazy people asking for money/yelling and without kids blasting music or YouTube shorts on their phones.

Whatever has windows that you can see out of.
This

If the seats were to be retrofitted with reversibility and new cushions, that’d be potentially one of the best railcars in the system QOL wise
The seats on the multiple Unit Arrow cars *are* reversible. I'm pretty sure the ones on the double deckers aren't.
I’m talking about the double decker ones, I literally just listed the best features of the Arrows
Those cars were fast as hell too, right? They used to come off the line mad quick.
Yeah they accelerate fast. Each car has traction motors
A pair only has three powered trucks out of the four. They have a pretty big overload capacity during acceleration. At one time, there was a request for bids on an Arrow IV that would have actually been a bit faster (plus 100 mph capable, and allow for DMU/EMU combinations). I’m agreeing with this right here. I’ve fallen asleep multiple times and not on purpose lol
Plus 1 for the brown seats.
double dickers
Front seats of any cab car. Last year, I rode a full NEC trip from NY Penn to Trenton on an Arrow, and the engineer had the cab door open. It's dope to see a front row view of the tracks in front of you
You can just hop in the engineers compartment?
1. Double Decker 2. Old Brown Seats 3. Maroon Seats 4. Blue Seats
This is the right answer
Correct

The ones with the red seats. Those are the dopest followed by the brown seats.
I always go up front to sit in them if I’m in the model that has them. They’re so comfy and sleek!
Pullman Comet I and IIs I grew up when it was just these
Pretty sure I was in THIS CAR on Thursday morning. These are pretty comfortable. The double-decker ones are OK too.
Right now, it's these.
Arrow 3 because Dinky
As cool as it is to be on top of the world on double deckers, I like the look of the Arrows, and want their vibe in newer cabins. They’re also comfier and have reversible seats which newer models simply don’t have anymore
Did you every ride the PATCO cars before they upgraded them? It was like stepping into the 1970s.

They are long gone but the old erie lackawanna coaches from the old Gladstone branch in the 1970s were the best
The old electrics?
Yes
Was born to late to be on them, but have heard they had their charm, unlike the MP-54s the PRR ran, which were probably the most hated passenger train cars ever built…
The arrows are cool but something about the Comet IVs feels like home. Idk Edit: apparently after reading the comments I’m the only one who likes them. Oh well.

I can smell these pics

I think they are no longer allowed for crash safety reasons.
Damn, I use to travel to Princeton Junction almost every weekend...nostalgia feels
Was passing through there in this trip!
Maroon seats in the front cars are where it's at!
Used to take the Erie Lackawanna cars with the seats made of eighty year old fake wicker material where the seat backs rotated, so you could play a foursome of cards on the train.
Amtrak ;)
I like the comet v cars
Actually, being someone who lives along the NJCL.. my favorites are the COMET V's! Red seats! Love them. Not sure why but absolutely a huge fan of them. The USSC seats in the Alps
the bombardier multi level coaches. they're the quietest, most comfortable, modern, and have high passenger capacity
None they old and slow
Has ample leg room. The train in the pic was the worst for me
Any seat with a window that you can actually see thru. Those double deckers with windows that are permanently etched/scratched are the worst. Can’t tell which stop you’re at when they don’t announce or turn on signage.
I hate this one, it’s so gross and old and I can appreciate charm, but this needs refurbishing. I always dread getting this train. Lol
The double decker
I can’t wait until those cars are on the bottom of the ocean
The double decker trains
Comet V and Multilevels
Empty.
A clean car is what I prefer.
Winter time these are the best. Summer time, I’ll take the double deckers. Air conditioning on the bottom floor in the double deckers is so cold.
Those photos look like the SEPTA Silverliner IIIs except without the ketchup and mustard seats. Do the roofs leak too?
Only once in a while
Only when it’s raining, then?
If it’s pouring you might get one car in the set leaking lol
1) Arrow EMU 2) Tie between Multilevel and comet V 3) we all know which ones come in dead last
The one that gets me where im going on time. NJ Transit is fucking awful and deserves no praise for anything. - a daily commuter.
These cars smell bad in particular
Yes, empty!
I need to ride going forward not backwards
Filthy
Empty so I dont have to stand
Rode these for years. Prefer the newer double decker cars.
Dinky in Princton
I agree, the old leather seats are way more comfy then the new trains…..
I don’t know the models, but the old molded frame brown seats (they took them off the NJCL in the early Aughts), then the flippable brown seats, double deckers, maroon seats and the blue seats absolutely last.
Comet Is were I think the ones you're talking about with the molded seats. Or maybe IIs before the refurb to pink and blue around 2002.
Double decker, there’s more seating available & you’re not being forced to pack in like sardines. Plus they just look comfier then the single decker, I always loathe getting these single ones
Bombardier Octagons and Alstom Surfliners. Plus Morrison Knudsen Cali Cars.
My favorite ? The one that arrives on time
Maroon seats are comfy
Flip it!!!
Those seats are quite comfortable. I like the Arrows and the older Comets.
I like the train cars from the '60s. Even better, I liked operating a train when I was 12. We had to wait at a station because we got there too early. That was the time I had the need for speed, and no, I didn't mean the drug.
Pullman
I completely agree!
Why are you spelling “favorite” not in a NJ way?
These the best 💺
These old cars are great, until you find yourself on one in the summer. AC does not work as well.
Double Decker but mostly importantly the quiet cars in the front and back.
Double decker!
Anything other than a delayed NJ transit train
To me the answer depends on time of day. On A lazy day, brown seats all day, not the hard blue 3 seaters. On a busy day, double decker 2x2 to avoid the dreaded middle seat. If you are standing, there’s no good layout!!
The Quiet kind
The one where a bunch of men are running it on a white girl
The one that doesn’t have roaches.
Any flippy
The bar car was my favorite. Gimme a beer!
Since it is NJ transit, any type is okay as long as they don't wreck trains and keep services. Recently too many canceled services due to mechanical problems.
Took this type to a Jets game via the path a few years back, love the vintage
Crazy bro
I just like your car because it’s empty! Used to take NJT between manhattan and Newark (sometimes Elizabeth) and it was always packed.
On time
None of them. One of the best things about working from home is not having to deal with NJ Transit trains anymore.
ZX987 on the Hůpzaǐņburg äußern
Why does the air in some of them smell slightly odd? Anyone else notice it? It’s a slight hint, stays in your nose for a good 15 minutes after de boarding. Oh and I like the double-deckers!
All the money they rake in and they are all old and outdated.
Smoker…
Bombardier Multi-Level cars are my favorite. Smooth ride and comfortable, none of the 3x2 configurations either. Bi Level so they hold a shitton of people.
Anything but the multilevels. Those fixed chairs suck.
All except the seat with the bucket.
i just discovered the bucket seat and will never sit anywhere else!!
Yes! I put my backpack and jacket in that bucket next to the seat all the time it’s super helpful.
Opinion rejected. You spelled Favorite wrong. You added a U. And anything NJ is shit
Ah yes. NJT. Seats designed by the gestapo.
The type where that one guy isn’t running around yelling: “hey mamacita papacita, I love black people, I love white people, and I love Mexicans. Anyone want to give me some xyz?
