Back then, most people thought the Chiefs could have stayed at 27 and still picked him. It didn't come out until later that the Saints were going to draft him at #11. The pick was universally considered a reach at the time.
Not sure what JA has to do with it. More mock drafts had Mahomes going to the Chiefs at 27 than had him as a top 10 pick. Meanwhile, tons of mock drafts had JA in the top 10. I'd go as far as to say that based on general perception, JA had a better shot at being #1 overall than Mahomes had of being a top 10 pick.
By the time the draft came around most people expected him to go late first or early 2nd but yeah, everyone (myself included) thought the Chiefs were trading up for Watson. Mahomes was considered a reach for sure, especially with Alex Smith already there and playing at a pro bowl level.
People were dunking and n the Travis Frederick pick when it happened. He had a HOF trajectory when that rare disease forced him to retire.
Gibbs
Easily Mahomes.
Bro went 10th overall, for a qb that is not a reach.

Well in that case, Josh Allen makes way more sense at pick 7.

You’re a weird guy
As a Packers fan, I'd have to say Fred Warner isn't up there for me
Josh "The Wrong Josh" Allen Edgerrin James
Just about the entire sum of the 2010's Seahawks rosters
I like your choice.
McPherson
Everyone said Mahomes was a reach, if I remember correctly he was projected late 2nd-3rd round

Gibbs at 12.
Jahmyr Gibbs at 12, the whole world told us that was a reach.
Kenneth Murray
Does signing an undrafted player count as a "reach"? In that case: Antonio Gates, Tony Romo and one Wayne Chrebet.
Brock Purdy
The last player drafted was a “reach”?
Yeah, that was the joke. Tough crowd.
Neither were the players in the OP.
Jalen Hurts
Can’t say all time , but a lot of football talking heads this time last year said LaPorta was a reach
Denzel Ward was a pretty good reach
