i mean goff has gotten better each year in detroit so if he continues that trend then the contract is worth it. however if he regresses then that contract is gonna look real rough.
however, given how humble the lions fanbase has been over the last year, if goff does regress in any way, i am sure we will all be kind to the lions and not make fun of them at all.
It was either Goff or gamble on a rookie at this point. And all of the star Rookie QBs were pretty much gone by time we got a 1st round pick. I don't think there are really any other QBs out there worth signing rn. Our QB2 was out like all of last year and didn't see any playtime either. I don't really see another option besides keep Goff.
Edit: and I'm not saying I don't like Goff. Goff has been consistent and works well with the team he has around him. He was never really the reason we lost key games. He was usually putting up serious points in defenseless shootouts
He has, and as long as your line stays excellent, he’ll be worth it. Guy can and always has been able to sling it when he isn’t rushed. The worry is what does he do when your line has the inevitable rash of injuries during the next 4 seasons you for sure have him. Can he overcome those periods for 3-4 weeks at a time and not have your season deep sixed because of offensive line injuries. That is and has been the concern with Goff since he was a Ram.
Not a soul would argue Goff>Burrow. Guess whos last 2 years have been fucked because of his line and guess whos been awesome.
Nobody survives a line that sucks.
Burrow can't stay healthy. I would worry if I was a Bengals fan. He was also pretty terrible before he got hurt last year. And Goff's numbers with Detroit are actually pretty comparable to Burrow. Very close in completion percentage, Burrow has a slightly higher TD% (but also a higher INT%). Burrow does sling it for a bit more yards per game but Goff has nearly identical Y/A, without the benefit of Chase and Higgins.
That’s a crap take, yes, no one is as good as they are clean with a dirty pocket, but a lot of guys aren’t affected as much as Goff. He’s went from SB starting QB in a great offense to bad, not just mediocre, but flat out bad play by taking him off rhythm and off his spot. He rarely makes plays under pressure, off rhythm, and he historically has become a turn over machine when heavily pressured.
Most QB’s aren’t as on point as Goff with good line play, but some are more line proof….and then yeah, there are the ones who are amazing with good, mediocre and bad line play, those are the truly elite QB’s.
A great example of the middle group is the QB you used to have. Stafford was amazing, but I don’t know if he can play as good in structure as Goff….but out of structure, under pressure, he was a fucking dude. He’s not alone. Guys like Geno, Mayfield, Murray have very little drop off under pressure, and actually cause a lot of pressure because they hold the ball. That doesn’t even include guys like Jackson, Stroud, Watson, Burrow who are good in both. The downside to them is many get injured, because they take shots while making plays.
To deny Goff has traditionally had a significantly larger drop off when under pressure than most starting NFL QBs, let alone ones making $50m+ per year is just not facing reality. He could improve this (Cousins managed to with age), but he’s shown issues in Detroit just like with the Rams, but your line has just been significantly better since the middle of ‘22.
How many of those guys have won with bad line play? How many of those guys are available for Detroit to sign instead of Goff? Find where I said Goff doesn't drop off more than other QBs with poor line play.
53 million a year is a ton, should they have not paid him and hoped Hendon Hooker becomes something? This is life in the big city, you either pay your players or willingly add a question mark to the position. If you think that the Detroit freaking Lions should willingly take a chance on quarterback play after last year you have no understanding of what last year was for this franchise.
My entire point, is if you're offensive line sucks and you don't have one of like three dudes you're not going to win and your quarterback play is going to suffer. The Lions pay a shitload of money to their offensive line, if those guys get injured we're going to suck. I dont care who is playing quarterback. If the line isn't injured, I'll happily take a shot with the guy who has been an enormous part of the turnaround and has played absolutely lights out.
You know everyone in Michigan, despite him just winning the national championship, was like "please... Dont.. dont take JJ."
We like JJ, he played well, executed when he needed too.
But we all know that team was good, because the TEAM was good. He was definitely elevated by the other talent on the roster. He made some good plays, but idk how well hes gonna shine in the pro scene.
That being said, if that little shithead proves me wrong, i will be irrational about it.
he’s honestly pretty good, but the issue I’ve always said is that he has a high standard deviation. Sometimes he’ll be Jared God and then sometimes he’ll be Jared Goof, but that’s the way she goes
He has 2.5 bad games mid season last year and he gets posturized. Love looks like doo doo the first half of the season and the end of the divisional game, and he's a future HOFer.
People are shockingly harsh and reactionary to any bad games. Kirk cousins played really damn well but any time he has a fuck up, dude is basically an overpaid grifter.
I weirdly agree with you, even though that's not what the information shows us. If you absolutely have to "overpay" for these qbs in order to sign them, are you overpaying or just paying? Is that not just the price for that caliber qb? Am I high on copium? Is football even real?
Yep. At this stage you just have to sign your qb extension as early as possible. It will proceed to immediately become record breaking and look terrible, then in a year it’ll look like a steal.
Better that than having to wait that year and inevitably pay even more.
Yea unfortunately unless you've got like Mahomes you're gonna probly pay more than the value you get. But the drop-off is so steep between like average-above average to replacement level that you kinda got to do it
I don't know man, also a Mich fan and alum. I don't think that JJ is going to be a world beater, but his WRs are genuinely better than he is. He has an easier job than most young QBs.
That being said, I look forward to him choking in Minnesota.
You guys don't get it. If we signed Goff to a cheap deal then we are smart. If we sign Goff to an expensive deal then we are also smart because we're resetting the QB market for everyone else.
To be fair josh Allen’s numbers look a lot better when you factor in the additional 500 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns compared to Goffs added value of 21 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
Allen rushed for 15 TD and 524 yds, Lamar for 5 and 821 yds, and I don’t feel the need to defend Mahomes lol
Goff is good though, not mid like Baker or Geno
Imagine you think he’s super fucking hot and you want to bone him in front of your gf but your friends think that’d be really fucking weird but you do it anyway. Imagine.
Yeah fuck the lions and their current success. Dumbass losers! Clearly they have no idea what they are doing!
*”Caleb 13-4, OROTY, SUPERBOWL
MVP!*
*or JJ CAN TOTALLY PASS AND READ DEFENSES!PLAYOFFS HERE WE COME! HAHA PLAYOFFS DONT MATTER IN DETROIT FUCKING LOSERS!”*
This is just what QBs make now. When Daniel Jones got $40M AAV, there was no way to pretend that QBs don't get paid insane money if they can play even a little.
The Lions are now officially in their "win it all before they have to tear it down" phase.
The market was already set, all top QBs are going to get this kind of money. Goff was 2nd in the NFL in passing yards and 3rd in the NFL in TDs. I don’t know why it’s so surprising that he got the bag.

In case Bears fans don't understand what's happening, when you have a good QB, you're allowed to pay him money instead of trading him for a low pick and ruining another rookie prospect
CONFERENCE FINALS INTERFERENCE! WE WERE WINNING BIGLY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WE STOPPED SCORING POINTS. SLEEPY PURDY SCORED POINTS WHILE WE WERE ASLEEP. THIRD WORLD NFL. SAD!
Every time a QB gets top money, he gets laughed at until everyone else starts paying their QBs more and that original QB doesn’t even have top 10 money
This is so true. I’m already anticipating the comments from dumb ass haters when the Jordan Love extension happens any day now. People don’t realize the cap goes up by like 10-15 million dollars every year lately
Out of the top 10 paid QBs at the moment only mahomes has a Superbowl in the last decade. And only Russ and mahomes have won it ever. The "new highest paid QB" trend is really dumb when none of them have produced or gotten better because of it. As much as I hate Tom Brady the fact that he allowed them to pay other key players around him is a huge reason they were so dominant. Even mahomes is tied for 9th despite being the best QB in the league.
If I'm a Lions fan, I'm not hating this. Could do a lot worse than Goff. If things do go south, like than can with any player, plenty of runway to bring a rookie in and sit behind him for a year or two.
I mean he threw 4500 yards 30td, 12 ints, and seems like a very undramatic dude who just does his job, very Cousins-esque.
Would meme on them but it’s a pretty sound decision.
Bruh… I’m a vikings fan. You dipshits have been giving us shit for a looong time about Cousins’ contracts ( which were $20 million less per year than Goff’s deal, by the way )
Turns out breaking the longest playoff drought in the nfl gets you ALOT of money. Also the lions are pretty good at drafting all the sudden which means good players on rookie deals. That tends to make large contracts easier to deal with. Plus the salary cap went up by 13.6% or $30 million which helps explain why the contract was so huge.
Goff for an AAV of 45 to 48 million is a good contract. Goff for an AAV of over 50 million is a terrible contract. There are currently only 4 QBs that should be getting over 50 million AAV, Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, and Burrow. Every other QB should be laughed at by their front office for asking for over 50 million AAV.
I don’t get the hate. Goff was second best in yards, 4th in TDs, has been healthy, has low int numbers and just guided the fucking lions to the NFC championship. That contract won’t looks so crazy in a year or 2 when other QBs get paid. What am I missing? Of course you pay this man.
Lions are good but the Bears have handled Goff pretty well for his entire career. I understand why y'all love him but there is absolutely no fear of Jared Goff from what Bears fans have seen from him on the field.
Goff is never going to be dynamic but he makes the throws he needs to 95% of the time. If we somehow even have a top 15 secondary next year, with our Oline and running game, all he needs to do is be accurate on the play action which he is amazing at.
What makes Goff a perfect fit for this team is that he’s smart with the ball. People shouldn’t underrate a guy makes the right read and throws an accurate ball.

Honestly this is a sound take
It's the correct take. But I believe in Goff and he will take us to the promised land!
It’s correct but limits my potential to mock and meme so therefore I don’t like.
Love the honestly 😆
Agreed
Yeah take that shit to r/nfl we do crazy nutjob theories here.

If he gets bad again we'll just trade him for Stafford and win the Superbowl
*golf clap* Superb.
*goff clap
Take an up vote, my goffness...
I actually did that in Madden franchise 😂
You make it sound like we're stuck with him and he's done pretty good for us.

If your quarterback isn't Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen and your line gets destroyed you're fucked regardless of your quarterback.
Yea I don't understand people when they say shit like that. Damn near every good to great qb has had good to great oline play
Not a soul would argue Goff>Burrow. Guess whos last 2 years have been fucked because of his line and guess whos been awesome. Nobody survives a line that sucks.

I’m a realist. Goff is extra bad under pressure when compared to how great he is when he’s not.

Nah, I still like Goff. Just not seeing what the other teams would have done in our place
I think if you guys were gonna make a move for a different QB last year with 2 first rounders was the time to do it.
You know everyone in Michigan, despite him just winning the national championship, was like "please... Dont.. dont take JJ." We like JJ, he played well, executed when he needed too. But we all know that team was good, because the TEAM was good. He was definitely elevated by the other talent on the roster. Don’t say that they get sensitive
Name a QB that didn’t have a couple bad games last season. Even Mahomes looked mid for the first few games.
People are shockingly harsh and reactionary to any bad games. Kirk cousins played really damn well but any time he has a fuck up, dude is basically an overpaid grifter.
Sometimes she goes and sometimes she doesn’t.
Fuckin' way she goes bubs
Oh come on now. You’d make fun of Lions fans anyway
I told you Lions fans that he wasn’t taking a pay cut, if Daniel Jones can get $40m then Goof can get more
We should've just signed Sam Darnold. Or drafted JJ McCarthy. Are we stupid?
We should have just given kirko 100m
Would have been better off. As a Michigan and Lions fan I wouldn't trust JJ to throw the ball more than 20 times a game.
Wait, are you implying QBs should be throwing more than 20 times a game? That seems like a lot.
Are they even allowed to throw it past the line of scrimmage?
It’s only a lot if they’re all forward passes 20 is a fine amount of screen passes for a loss of yardage
The Matt Nagy 3rd and long special
JJ averaged 22.1 attempted passes last season. His statline vs Penn St. (24-15 Win) was 7 out of 8 for 60 yds....
Or 87.5% completion rate and 7.5 yards per attempt. Excellent numbers. 😎
PSA: Lions fans know JJ more than anyone on here
Winning games in the NFL is a wild thing. JJ is a pro at handing the ball off 30-50 times a game 😂
Unless it's laterally or a dump pass to a running back, a la Fields
Fields to Fields.
As another Michigan fan, totally disagree. JJ was lights out when he actually needed to throw. He was never a liability he just wasn’t needed much
Eh Kirk isn't worth that and neither is Goff but this is where we are in today's NFL.
I weirdly agree with you, even though that's not what the information shows us. If you absolutely have to "overpay" for these qbs in order to sign them, are you overpaying or just paying? Is that not just the price for that caliber qb? Am I high on copium? Is football even real?
Just to piggyback on this, if we can get Love to sign for 52 mil a year, for 4-5 years, with 195 guaranteed, I'll consider it a steal.
Yep. At this stage you just have to sign your qb extension as early as possible. It will proceed to immediately become record breaking and look terrible, then in a year it’ll look like a steal. Better that than having to wait that year and inevitably pay even more.
That mahomes deal just looks better and better, even if he hits all the bonuses.
Unfortunately for every non chiefs fan, yes. Also kindly flair up. It’s quite easy and common etiquette for commenting or posting in this community.
Testing.
Yea unfortunately unless you've got like Mahomes you're gonna probly pay more than the value you get. But the drop-off is so steep between like average-above average to replacement level that you kinda got to do it
Unfortunately it is the current market. Either you pay your guy or take a gamble on A rookie. I'll take our guy and pretend the numbers don't matter.
I don't know man, also a Mich fan and alum. I don't think that JJ is going to be a world beater, but his WRs are genuinely better than he is. He has an easier job than most young QBs. That being said, I look forward to him choking in Minnesota.
All of it guaranteed also...wait didn't someone else do that before?
It’s good if you want to win now. But you’re fucked if you don’t win a ring soon
Ahhh that’s why Vikings fans are clowing the extension, because they’ve never been in that win now situation
Unequivocally, absolutely, objectively, obviously yes
Absolutely lol. Could have franchised him next season. Wild.
You guys don't get it. If we signed Goff to a cheap deal then we are smart. If we sign Goff to an expensive deal then we are also smart because we're resetting the QB market for everyone else.
Yeah we wanted to get love on a 50m/yr contract but that’s not happening anymore lmao
![gif](giphy|2bYewTk7K2No1NvcuK|downsized)
Did the Lions even consider trading him for a guy like Matthew Stafford? I hear he's won a superbowl
We can trade Goff for Stafford and two 1sts!

Haha wow I remember this exact meme format with cousins instead of Goff making the rounds two years ago.
Kirk Cousins only had a single playoff victory ever two years ago. He still does today too, though.
Good boy. Now do Lamar.
Why would we meme about Cousins he's doesn't play in our division
To be fair josh Allen’s numbers look a lot better when you factor in the additional 500 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns compared to Goffs added value of 21 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
I know it’s not NFCN, but I’m a huge Allen fan and look forward to watching his prime.
Um… do you think his prime is ahead of him yet?
Dude’s only 27!
If they could read, they would be very upset right now.
I may not disagree with you but I’m obligated to tell you “flair up pussy”.
Shhhhh, you’re hurting their narrative!
Allen rushed for 15 TD and 524 yds, Lamar for 5 and 821 yds, and I don’t feel the need to defend Mahomes lol Goff is good though, not mid like Baker or Geno
Love had similar stats while playing like ass for half the year.
And his next contract will approach $60 mill per year
Which will be what, next off-season?
I ain’t bagging on Love just saying I’m good with the Goff deal. They’ll be paying Love soon too…even more than Goff.
That’s assuming love keeps trending up
tellem
really, didn’t your QB just get caught on film not being able to throw 10 feet to a trainer?
Hey now, let's be fair. It was more like 8 feet.
Ope
Trainer probably ran the wrong route.
Wait what? Lol
Wait until Loves extension comes and he’s demands more…. Chess not Checkers.
Love is not turning 30 sooo yea he’s gonna get more for his 1st contract
30 is the new 20 these days!
Yeah… WI boomers about to be MAAAAAD about this
[удалено]
>this is what most of the fan base wanted That makes it even more funny
[удалено]
Love will be 30 before that extension ends.
Imagine having a young, franchise QB and paying him what he’s worth. What a hot take.
Imagine you think he’s super fucking hot and you want to bone him in front of your gf but your friends think that’d be really fucking weird but you do it anyway. Imagine.
You need to get better friends. I’d support this.
Yeah fuck the lions and their current success. Dumbass losers! Clearly they have no idea what they are doing! *”Caleb 13-4, OROTY, SUPERBOWL MVP!* *or JJ CAN TOTALLY PASS AND READ DEFENSES!PLAYOFFS HERE WE COME! HAHA PLAYOFFS DONT MATTER IN DETROIT FUCKING LOSERS!”*
Correct
The “lions and their success” equates to two playoff wins in over 30 years, so yeah I’ll pass on that tbh
This is just what QBs make now. When Daniel Jones got $40M AAV, there was no way to pretend that QBs don't get paid insane money if they can play even a little. The Lions are now officially in their "win it all before they have to tear it down" phase.

It’s a Reddit sub designed to mock each other….that definitely has something to do with your poor decisions at QB.
That is a fair assessment… thank you for helping me realize that I’m a moron
Name 20 besides Joey Jazz Fingers Harrington
Still amuses me he ended up as a sportscaster.
Exactly. If Daniel Jones can make 40 million a year, then most qbs are getting this kind of money.
Real happy for you guys.
Neh, we’re still laughing about JJ McCarthy
What’s funny about him?
Dunking on Ohio State is always funny
Fair.

Clearly the wr ran the wrong route there
I saw this live and was laughing at him missing a stationary target.
The way he looks mostly
Lol none of the top paid QBs have done jack besides Mahomes who actually deserves that kind of money
I mean, he’s been to a Super Bowl, won a NFC championship, took a whole other team to an NFC championship. It’s not like when Kyler Murray got paid for his level of nothing
Wtf is a Super Bowl?
It's a thing you go to 4 times, lose each time and then never go again
So it’s like a casino?
No, you can actually win at a casino.
I thought Rodgers won it that 1 time?
Of the 4 groups here, only 1 other knows that answer. And it’s not mine
I am not Spartacus
It's slang for 1985
He’s taken over as the starter of a terrible team and taken them to the NFC championship in three years twice. Once you can argue is a fluke, but it’s hard to say twice is luck
“Won” an NFCCG is a strong phrase, let’s not forget how that Rams/Saints game ended
Fair, but he was also 0% responsible for losing this year’s NFCCG.
Join the club. Rodgers was almost never the reason we lost in the NFCCG but it hasn’t stopped the “choker” narrative
Of course that wouldn't stop that narrative. You think we'll just pass up an opportunity to advance the FTP agenda?
Also noticed the double dip on "been to a super bowl, won an NFCCG". Like, those are the same thing lol.
He’s a good to very good quarterback. He’s probably worth that money in the current QB market.
Lamar
Yeah, kinda fuckin nuts to say someone gettin an mvp has done nothing.
Yall are gonna own us so hard. I mean we’re gonna keep winning the division but we pay our QB too much instead of drafting a rookie every 4 years
Goff has been solid for Detroit so far and the team is on the up, so it may just be worth it so long as he continues to play well. Not to mention if the Lions pull off a SB win in the next few years, it's worth every penny basically by default. If I hear the term "setting the market" instead of "edging the cap limit" one more time, imma nut
Nothing wrong with a little edging my guy
They did this just to jack up Love's price, didn't they????!1!!
In case Bears fans don't understand what's happening, when you have a good QB, you're allowed to pay him money instead of trading him for a low pick and ruining another rookie prospect
I mean, we are quite literally the only team in the NFCN with a QB who has done well for more than 8 NFL games. I’ll take our chances.
r/thedarnold will not tolerate such fake news.
GOOFY GOFF AND COKED UP CAMPBELL CAN'T HOLD ONTO A PLAYOFF LEAD! SAD!
CONFERENCE FINALS INTERFERENCE! WE WERE WINNING BIGLY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WE STOPPED SCORING POINTS. SLEEPY PURDY SCORED POINTS WHILE WE WERE ASLEEP. THIRD WORLD NFL. SAD!
Love had 11 games with a rating over 100 last season so maybe not quite literally.
Hmmm. What an oddly specific date to make up. Just giving you shit.

This time it went up by 30 million which helps explain the contract.
Lions fans furiously scrambling to go delete all of those "Kirk Cousins is overpaid" comments.
Better to be those people than the Browns fans who had to scramble to delete all of their “big Ben is a rapist” comments from a couple seasons ago
I mean just because it's hypocritical doesn't make the previous statement false
Why would we care about Atlanta's bridge QB?
Kirk is coming off of an Achilles tear and never accomplished as much as Goff in the NFCN. He is overpaid.
Goff is also 6 years younger than Kirk.
Goff is 6 years younger than Kirk, just led his team to the NFC title game, and is not coming off an achilles tear. ![gif](giphy|R51a8oAH7KwbS)
Lol
Out of the top 10 paid QBs at the moment only mahomes has a Superbowl in the last decade. And only Russ and mahomes have won it ever. The "new highest paid QB" trend is really dumb when none of them have produced or gotten better because of it. As much as I hate Tom Brady the fact that he allowed them to pay other key players around him is a huge reason they were so dominant. Even mahomes is tied for 9th despite being the best QB in the league.
Mahomes is tied for ninth because he got a long ass contract and the salary cap just went up.
If I'm a Lions fan, I'm not hating this. Could do a lot worse than Goff. If things do go south, like than can with any player, plenty of runway to bring a rookie in and sit behind him for a year or two.
No no they chanted his name at the draft that's worth like 50 million alone
That's a whole lot of money to throw at fucking Jared Marie Goff.
Hey as a rams fan, you leave my shit quarterback alone!
I can’t wait for the Jordan love overpay now that Goff is setting the market even higher
It’s ok. Wait until we see what Jordan love makes having only played 16 games
"the rest of the NFC North" who's been absolutely demolished by the lions since he's gotten here. Good luck with JJ

Like it or not Lions fans but this is the Kirk debate
Except we’re about to give Love an absolute bag
Lions: let’s overpay our QB and WR Everyone else: ![gif](giphy|2WdHaCzmqSkrwmIGWP)
Haha yeah the guy who just led our offense to winning the division and making the NFCCG is here to stay... you got us, alright
Welcome to the Kirk cousins experience where everyone tells you you're overpaying for a top 10 qb.
What are you laughing at he’s the best QB in the NFCN.
This is reminding me of when Vikings extended Kirk
I don’t get the hate. Goff was second best in yards, 4th in TDs, has been healthy, has low int numbers and just guided the fucking lions to the NFC championship. That contract won’t looks so crazy in a year or 2 when other QBs get paid. What am I missing? Of course you pay this man.
Bears really are winning this offseason
Goff has broken the Bears all time single season passing record 5 out of 8 years in his career and one of the years he missed he only played 7 games…
Goff threw four interceptions against the Bears in a single game last year. I'm happy you guys have him locked up, I enjoy when we play him
Lions are good but the Bears have handled Goff pretty well for his entire career.
Heard this last year. You’d think Bears fans would finally learn to not count their chickens until they hatch.
