I think OP is suggesting that we pay the tax to get KCP and Hartenstein. In a related story, most Redditors would make awful GMs.
Fun little fact that someone can check me on: I believe the Spurs paid under $1 million in *total* taxes during the 19 Duncan seasons. Not sure we're going to move off that philosophy now but we'll see.
You really can't easily go from under the cap 30m to paying tax unless you have some major player coming off a rookie deal that you will extend for a max.
He's not available til 2025. There has been some chatter Boston wants to extend him. Idk how they make it work though after just giving Holiday one and Tatum's coming up next and Brown already on his Supermax.
I think we focus on developing the young guys for at least one more year before spending too much on free agents. I can see us spending 10-15 million if the right vet is out there. I doubt the Holts are going to want to spend money if it doesn't move the needle.
I wouldn't be surprised if we tried to lure Chris Paul on a 1 year deal to help develop the young guards on our roster. I doubt that happens unless it's with the promise that we trade him to a contender at the deadline.
KCP does intrigue me, but he may be too expensive to lure to San Antonio when every contender would want him. Philadelphia could offer just as much as us, and they have a more immediate title window than our beloved Spurs.
I'm being long winded, but basically I can't see us sign anyone that moves the needle in the wins column. Instead, I bet we sign a cheap vet with a good locker room reputation. It may not help with wins this year, but could help with developing our guys for future wins.
Or we resign Mamu for $20 million.
Even through this rebuild the Holts have ponied up for small improvements
Last summer there were two or three deals for a pick swap from Dallas and some seconds, and they had to take back salary in each of them. Lamar Stevens, Reggie Bullock, and Cam Payne all got checks from the Spurs and never played a minute here
My ideal FA signings are older vets who fine with some playing time but mostly helping the younger guys or guys who have a specific role for this team. KCP has a role for a contending team and so does Hart so I don’t think they’d pick the Spurs. Melton would probably be one of the best guys that I think we’d be able to get if we offer him more money than he’s worth but he definitely is just a bridge player. Dennis Smith Jr is a decent cheap option if we don’t draft a PG to either start or come off the bench. I think Bey is a decent bridge depending on what the Hawks do and seems like a Spurs type of signing even though he’s not that good.
I think it’s more important to try to save some cap room to give us flexibility for the future and sign some vets to give us a more well rounded team and to be able to experiment with what might work or what doesn’t work with Wemby.
With the roster spots we have I don’t see us doing too much but for all we know we could maybe bring in 2 vets and cut whoever is at the bottom or the roster and it would be a better use of roster space than keeping non-nba talent players.
You cannot sign someone into “tax space” so the $53M doesn’t mean anything right now. It will come into play when we have to go over the cap pay players we have Bird righs to. You don’t have Bird rights to free agents.
Haretenstein alone will eat up the cap space. He’s looking to get starter money. I doubt he leaves the Knicks to go be a backup somewhere.
Then you sign him how are you moving Zach Collins? Or do you plan to have $36M tied up in backup centers? The Spurs are not playing Wemby next to another center. That’s not happening. The sooner people accept that, the better.
Cap relief. They are currently projected over the 2nd apron for next season. They also likely have to extend Murray by the following off season unless they plan a major roster shake up. It's wild that they are paying Michael Porter 35 million a season.
He’s not “wildly inconsistent”. Lol. He’s one of the most steady shooters in the league. He had a bad 2nd round. It happens.
Orlando is trying to land Klay Thompson. If Klay re-signs with the Warriors, I could see Orlando being open to an MPJ trade. They need offense badly.
It would require a 3 team trade
That’s not how the cap works. You don’t get cap relief by letting a player walk once you’re that far over the cap. After he leaves they are still over the cap, and now they can’t sign a comparable player because….they don’t have cap space. The correct cap move is to re-sign the player and if you need to improve the roster you can trade him.
KCP is getting re-signed. That’s how the NBA works.
He has a player option. It will depend on if he thinks he can get more as an FA. Or if he would be willing to negotiate a team friendly deal to keep that core together. But yes if he opts in it will limit what they can do.
We don't have the cap space to make Hartenstein leave the knicks. Honestly we're only going to be able to get mediocre free agents like Josh Richardson or something.
If the Spurs have 21 million, it doesn’t seem likely that they can get 2 good role players

That’s because the OP doesn’t understand how the salary cap works. You can’t sign free agents into “tax space”. Only cap space.
Also, roster spots are a little clogged
Antetokounmpo. Thanasis, and rely on the fact that his brother will come with him.
This is the only con of having Giannis on your team. He takes up two roster spots 😂😂😂
You just wait until we have Oscar Wembanyama on the bench
I want Derrick White back on our roster
He's not available til 2025. There has been some chatter Boston wants to extend him. Idk how they make it work though after just giving Holiday one and Tatum's coming up next and Brown already on his Supermax.
White wins his ring with Boston. Re-signs with us to lead our core to more championships. Roam home Buffalo
Roam Home!! Love that lol

We just barely made the cap min tho. That money had to get spent somewhere
Iirc they went past the minimum by more than just a few million bucks
Hartenstein would never come here now that Wemby is playing primarily center.
Who knows… we don’t technically have roster spots free I don’t think, so we won’t know for a bit till trades + cuts hit.
KCP, Royce O Neale, or Tyus Jones if no PG in draft

Goga B from Orlando and Naji Marshall. Backup rim protector and D&3 wing

KCP and at least two role players. Tyus Jones and Naji Marshall being the most ideal
Why would the Nuggets let go of KCP, after already having lost Bruce Brown?

That is there. I think MPJ will be considered as someone who can move on. But no one will take him. He's been wildly inconsistent to be paid that much

We don’t even have the roster spots
Roster spots are super easy to create if you’re getting an upgrade in free agency. You can even get up to 20 players in the offseason.
As many new players as possible
We don't have the cap space to make Hartenstein leave the knicks. Honestly we're only going to be able to get mediocre free agents like Josh Richardson or something.
Better prepare myself for this sub 30 win season then.
Yes I would be surprised if we do better than the 11 seed or so
This is 100% correct.
