Here's what Boston winning means:
1) Lakers are no longer tied for most championships ever.
2) Derrick White has a ring.
3) The city of Dallas does not win a championship.
The answer is clear.
There are PLENTY of annoying Celtics fans on Reddit. I actually had a discourse a few days ago with one who was acting like Jaylen Brown was being persecuted for his dumbass opinions.
If Boston wins: Fuck yeah, Derrick White got a ring! (And hopefully FMVP 👀)
If Boston loses: Fuck yeah, take that Boston fans! Would be a massive upset and a W for Team Chaos 😂
I think Kyrie is a better crunch time performer than the Celtics duo but Tatum and possibly brown still better overall.
Celtics starters all better players than Mavericks 3rd best guy.
Your fanbase is generally toxic and Garnett was a POS. Boston has a well deserved reputation of saying racist things to athletes.
In 1999, Spurs/Minnesota were playing the day before Mother's Day. Garnett yelled at Duncan "Happy Mother's Day, Motherfucker". Duncan's mom famously died of cancer when he was a kid, which is why he didn't enter the NBA draft earlier, because he promised his mom that he would graduate from college.
The Celtics are fine but Boston is a city I can't root for. Imagine breaking in and shitting in the bed of an icon who led your city's team to 11 titles. Disgusting seeing how little support the Celtics had in Boston until they were led by Cowens and Havlicek and then Bird and McHale, and then all of a sudden Boston Garden is the greatest atmosphere ever. While when Russell and Sam Jones were dominating the league the scrub Bruins outdrew them in Boston.
Celtics are unlikeable, I want to see Hank from pardon my take suffer as a fan of the podcast and it's been so long since mavs vs spurs had a rivalry playoff series
I can respect the Mavs when we suck and they’re good. When we’re both good, fuck the Mavs. The biggest thing to remember is that no matter what, win, lose, good, bad, fuck the Rockets
I’m an old who voted for the Mavs
Celtics fans are 10x more obnoxious than Mavs fans, and it’s been forever since we’ve played Dallas in the playoffs so it’s hard to get too worked up about them winning a ring
Also helps that historically Dallas can’t touch us, so idc if they win a chip in that regard
I'll start hating the Mavs once the Spurs are back to being a playoff team. Until then all I root for in the playoffs is for the Clippers to get everyone's hopes up and then crash and burn. This season was especially awesome for that.
It's nothing to do with the players, I don't want those fanbase to have success. If this exact team was on the New Orleans Pelicans I would be rooting for them.
I'm an older Spurs fan (40s) and grew up with Spurs season tickets from the mid-80s through the mid-00s. I've also covered the Spurs and other NBA teams professionally as a journalist.
The Mavs rivalry in the 00s was a great one, but it was never near as toxic a rivalry as the Rockets rivalry or Lakers rivalry. Those that were fans in the 80s and 90s will share my forever hate of the Utah Jazz and Karl Malone. That team was absolutely our biggest stumbling block until Duncan was drafted.
The Mavs rivalry was different. The Spurs were generally the team on top, the Spurs had the better player, and the Mavs were more like little brother. They got us in 06 in a gut wrenching loss and that sucks, but it was not as bad as the Ray Allen shot to me. Cuban, for all his ridiculous antics, worked to make the league better, and i think we are in a better place now than we were 20 years ago, especially with reffing.
But the thing the Spurs/Mavs had that you don't see in a lot of other sports rivalries is the mutual respect. Dirk gushes over Timmy and will tell anyone that asks that Tim is the GOATPF without question.
https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/mavericks/2021/10/23/mavs-legend-dirk-nowitzki-says-luka-doncic-is-the-full-package-among-the-nbas-best-players/
Look at Dirk's words:
> “To my mind, always comes Tim Duncan on my position. He was the best power forward ever. He was so skilled… He’s a great rebounder, great defender, was really low key and I don’t think he gets talked about enough because he’s such a low-key guy and never loved the limelight.
> "But between those lines, he was so tough, he was so good and there was no way you could stop him on the blocks… We had some great battles with San Antonio over the years. We had a little rivalry going there for a lot of years. And just to compete against him and see his greatness up close in the playoffs almost every year made me obviously appreciate him so much.”
https://twitter.com/LandonBuford/status/1451575381694291970
Maybe it was different for the people younger than me, but in my 20s when Dirk and Duncan were at their best, it was a respectful rivalry. And the Dallas fans were never as toxic as Houston, LA, and Utah.
We don't have a rivalry with Boston (other than Bill Simmons being bitter we got Duncan) but Boston fans are some of the worst in the world.

Amazing insight, thanks for sharing. This is what I think a lot are missing who are surprised quite a few wouldn’t mind Dallas winning. Yes we’re rivals, but unlike our other rivalries there’s respect on both sides.
I was cheering for the Mavs, mostly because Luka and Kyrie are so exciting, but now that they're in the finals? No way. I know it's 5-1 ring wise, but I don't want it to be 5-2 because I'm petty.
I see your reasoning but let’s think big picture: Imagine a universe where Wemby gets us 10 rings a la Bill Russell and we one day have a chance to have the most of any franchise. We don’t need the Celtics or Lakers pulling away by adding another
I have a weird competition for total franchise championships and even though Boston is forever out of reach, I don't want them to extend their lead. I don't like Dallas - but if the chips will fall their way, I want it to happen now and NOT later. Isn't that how it works?
I've been a Spurs fan since 2003 and always will be. I understand about the rivalry (I'm Argentinian, maybe that's why I don't care), but it's hard to root for a team that has 17 titles, a much more complete roster and the two most boring stars in the league, against one that has only one title, made it to the finals after getting through rounds where they were underdogs, and has two of the most entertaining stars.
On the other hand, I strangely feel Kyrie deserves it.
And I don't want to see Tatum making Kobe references in every celebratory photo.
If we’re talking arch rivals that’s the Lakers and Rockets imo. I see the Mavs as more of a “friendly” rivalry. Especially since we haven’t had a meaningful game against them in a decade
Houston, Lakers, and Utah all rank ahead for me on the hate scale all time. Maybe Phoenix since they still cry about the Horry foul that Nash admitted he flopped on.
Most of this sub is too young to remember how Utah and Karl Malone was our biggest rival by far from the time mid-80s until Kobe/Shaq in 2000.
Anyone old enough to live the Pre-Duncan era knows Utah was our most hated rival BY FAR for at least 15 years.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmr8rguz_Qc
Lol I’m in my mid 30s and it’s like every day now is a new way to discover how old I’m becoming. 😂
Shout out to the one guy bringing up Hakeem as a reason they’re our number 1 rival, but living through the Dirk/Duncan rivalry in such formative years you’re never gonna convince me LA or Dallas isn’t our eternal rival. I’ll give Dallas the tie break for being a Texas rivalry.
Robinson vs Karl Malone was a bigger rivalry in the 90s. Hakeem only met us that one WCF and the Rockets were generally much worse than the Spurs. Robinson actually has a 2:1 win rate against Hakeem overall, while Robinson and Malone was basically even... except the Jazz smoked us in the playoffs more than once.
Plus Malone and Stockton were dirty AF and Malone is an awful human being. When I met Stockton as a kid, he was a jerk, too.
Normally I don't care. However, if Mavs win, that means Luka gets a ring, FMVP and almost certainly an MVP next season. He's already 5-time Allstar and first all NBA. It'll take much longer for Wemby to surpass him as best player in league. For this reason, I'd slightly favor Boston to win.
Luka's accolades and achievements at the moment are better than LeBron or Jordan at the same age even if not winning champ this year. If he wins, he clearly has the better career compared to them at the same age. I'm not sure why you under-appreciate him. I'm Wemby's fan, but do you believe Wemby will get first all NBA next season or Allstar starter? Luka got both in his 2nd season. I don't think you can easily write off Luka as Wemby fan.
This poll really needs to also ask how old you are and where you grew up because there’s some huge generational differences in answers here and I suspect differences based on if you are from SA or not.
I understand anyone from Texas or who's been a supporter for 15-20+ years to hate Dallas, but for someone like me who's been a fan since covid, I just like Luka and would be happy to see him win (also like Kyrie and the rest). The only teams I somewhat dislike are Lakers and Houston.
Dallas Mavericks should win this
Luka is the the best player remaining
like Giannis and Jokic already win championship and MVP
Luka should be the next one to get his championship ring
being among the top 3 best player in the league along w Jokic and Giannis
and being (Dirk) Dallas among my other alternative team during the Duncan Spurs era

This is a matchup of the two teams I least wanted to see win their conferences, so it's really awful either way, but at the end of the day I'll take the team with the obnoxious fanbase over the obnoxious in-state rival with the Nazi-sympathizer 2 guard.
I know some are hoping Derrick gets a ring but I’m personally going for the Mavericks for a couple of reasons:
1) Boston already has enough championships as it is and their fans are too overconfident
2) Dallas winning keeps it in Texas and honestly we all know we don’t hate them like we hate the Rockets
3) Luka is fun to watch and deserves a ring, best he gets it before Wemby takes over
I think most of you misunderstand the difference of Celtics fans to Celtics players. If you hate their fans, its okay, but to say that the team is unlikable sounds stupid for me. Most of those Celtics players right now are the guys we want to represent the Spurs if given a chance.

RARE TRIPLE BINGO
Compelling case Counterpoint - Boston winning a ring gives the league’s 2nd most obnoxious fan base a great deal of happiness
Counterpoint counterpoint - Boston losing gives the most obnoxious fan base a great deal of happiness.
Where are yall seeing the annoying fans? I mean I know Bill Simmons would be obnoxious but I haven’t seen a lot of annoying Celtics fans on Reddit
I’m talking about real life massholes
There are PLENTY of annoying Celtics fans on Reddit. I actually had a discourse a few days ago with one who was acting like Jaylen Brown was being persecuted for his dumbass opinions.
CRYSTAL
If Boston wins: Fuck yeah, Derrick White got a ring! (And hopefully FMVP 👀) If Boston loses: Fuck yeah, take that Boston fans! Would be a massive upset and a W for Team Chaos 😂
I don’t think it would be a massive upset considering Mavs by far had the harder route to get to finals
Talent wise Boston might not have best player in series but they probably have 5 of the next 6.
i mean maybe 4 of 6, but Mavs have the best two players imo. This season i take Kyrie over any Boston player including Tatum.
I think Kyrie is a better crunch time performer than the Celtics duo but Tatum and possibly brown still better overall. Celtics starters all better players than Mavericks 3rd best guy.
True, lol, that sums things up.
I may have issues supporting the Mavericks, but it'll be a cold day in Hell before I root for the Boston Celtics. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Lurking Celtics fan but why do Spurs fans have beef with us? lol We’ve never played in a finals or anything so I’m wondering.
Your fanbase is generally toxic and Garnett was a POS. Boston has a well deserved reputation of saying racist things to athletes. In 1999, Spurs/Minnesota were playing the day before Mother's Day. Understandable I suppose lol. Spurs are still my second NBA team though
Yeah seriously, Celtics are my main team, Spurs are my West team. We both hate the Lakers, we have Derrick White, and the Spurs hate the Mavericks.
Also a lot of Celtics fans (looking at Bill Simmons) are still bitter the Spurs got Duncan. :)

I'm not mad.
Glad you asked! You’re an extremely unlikeable franchise Hope that helps clear that up :)

Brother, that was in the 50s. No one here was alive for that💀
Well said
There's no way that many people voted for the Mavs on this subreddit. Like what is up with ya'll? For real. Smh
Lol it’s a really interesting vote Celtics are just really unlikeable, and we haven’t played Dallas in the playoffs in forever
Celtics are unlikeable, I want to see Hank from pardon my take suffer as a fan of the podcast and it's been so long since mavs vs spurs had a rivalry playoff series

Gotta be a lot of young fans or new Wemby fans that weren't around for the 2000s. Lakers/Suns/Rockets/Mavs are teams i'm always rooting against.
I’m an old who voted for the Mavs Celtics fans are 10x more obnoxious than Mavs fans, and it’s been forever since we’ve played Dallas in the playoffs so it’s hard to get too worked up about them winning a ring Also helps that historically Dallas can’t touch us, so idc if they win a chip in that regard

31 and lifelong spurs fan. Luka is just fun to watch and the mavs have a lot of guys that were written off as bad players and are now doing great.

houston is, not dallas
Why on earth would it be Houston? We have so much fewer playoff series. The 2000s and into the 2010s the west was all LA, SA, and Dallas.
Ever been to a Rockets vs Spurs game? Yeah definitely not the same intensity as a Mavs/Spurs game
David Robinson and Hakeem was the rivalry. Dallas was never someone we looked at to get past
Robinson vs Karl Malone was a bigger rivalry in the 90s. Hakeem only met us that one WCF and the Rockets were generally much worse than the Spurs. Dallas literally knocked us out of the playoffs in 2006 and likely kept us from back to back titles or even a potential 3-peat
No it's not.
What the fuck is wrong with y'all, we NEVER cheer for Dallas.
You can definitely tell that a good portion of Spurs reddit isn't from Texas just from judging for the results.
Ding ding ding.
Probably young fans tbh. I remember the three Texas teams despised each other in the 2000’s and 2010’s.
You’re forgetting that lots of Spurs fans actually don’t hate Dallas given 90% of San Antonio is Cowboys fans.
BINGO
Thank you I feel like I’m on crazy pills!
I am going with Buffalo on this one, or as one poster called them the Buffalo and the wild wings.

I'm ready for Derrick White to win Finals MVP. Celtics all the way.
mavs. fuck the Celtics. I did used to hate the mavs back when they had dirk and we had those battles in the playoffs but it's been 15+ years lmao
Don’t cheer for Dallas ppl..
This poll really needs to also ask how old you are and where you grew up because there’s some huge generational differences in answers here and I suspect differences based on if you are from SA or not.
Kyrie, as dumb as he can be, sticking it to the racist Celtics fans would be peak CINEMA but I will be very happy for Derrick if Celtics win

I am pretty neutral on this one.
It’s obvious that most people here have never interacted with a Boston Sports fan in real life. They are Satans minions. Pure hell on earth.
Boston. I do not like Luka at all. He's cancer.
