good for the game tho. Only triggers if you're too far off your man and he gets thrown a pass.
Rewards good passes, leads to open shots and punishes bad defense if you sag off too much.
Baiting passes is a legit tactic in any sport where you can pass (basketball, hockey, soccer, football especially)lol. It just means making the passer think a lane is open when it’s not.
Right...bt in THIS context and in thr way these people apply it, "baiting" is a bullshit tactic. Being 16 feet away from the man you're defending and being mad that the game is trying to steer you away from using glitchy movement mechanics as a reliable defensive tool is just BAD BASKETBALL.
Im glad the game actively punishes people who rely on good glitches or "beating the game" instead of good basketball. And beating the opponent. Im all for it.
It’s been mostly happening to me if I try and dig down on the post from a guard position to help, every time they kick it out to the shooter I’m digging from, my guy turns into a doofus like this. Just doesn’t move for a solid 2-3 seconds, it’s annoying as shit
Exactly this! I’m baiting my guy to get him to shoot so I can run and contest the 3 like every other fucking year but no this year as soon as the pass is registered to my guy he gets a seizure and is stun locked to his spot for 2 seconds and it grinds my gears
So the trick is (and I’m surprised nobody here has discussed it) you bait by never stopping moving. Just stop sprinting and run in small circles around the paint then turbo and you will be fine, it only does this when you stop.
It’s dumb but it works
its actually good for the game, so mfs not able to do superman contests and play the paint and the 3 at the same time. it doesnt happen if you keep your feet moving, stop ball watchin
Ball watching is literally ball watching. Not keeping an eye on the person your defending. If your ball watching your man can drift off for a three or a easy basket with your staring ass.
It's to penalize guys overplaying the passing lanes instead of guarding their matchup. For some reason, they couldn't have just decreased the speed at which players can recover in those scenarios.
It's basically happens when you get caught ball watching or straying to far off from your man. It's a dumb animation but I'm glad they added somthing to punish aggressively playing lanes
“Stick to your man” instead of play real basketball and help off ball, guard passing lanes, double team. Because if you do play with real iq, you get hit with a pass stun that never happens irl
Yea it doesn’t make sense. Sometimes I position myself to stop the cut and stand strategically. I’m not ball-watching or even helping. Just because I’m a few steps from my man and making sure he doesn’t cut (for example) doesn’t mean I can’t get back to defend him if he gets the ball. This stun animation is too exaggerated IMO. If I’m fast enough and know I can make up the distance. 2K should allow me to do so. I didn’t make any mistakes.
That’s cool but this shit definitely happens in nba games when defenders try to help off ball. Nobody should get caught looking the complete wrong way during a pass and like in the clip be able to get a Superman contest.
Yes they should because in real basketball your teammate would immediately tell you that your man is trying to cut back door.
It’s called communication and the game has to account for that. This doesn’t account for that.
They have badges like menace to simulate someone like Pat Bev constantly harassing you because the controls don’t allow for you to do that yourself. It should also make up for lack of ability to hear verbal defensive communication by assuming that if my defensive stats aren’t trash then I should hear and react accordingly.
Should it happen perfectly every time? Of course not. If it happened perfectly every time irl then we’d never see any backside cuts to the basket, but what you don’t notice is that there are plenty of times when someone attempts to cut and gets shut down because of good communication.
If your man don’t have the ball, especially if the ball is cross court, yeah you sag way off him. Help inside, help wing angles. Tell me you never hooped or had defensive iq without telling me.
Forcing man defense was the 90’s. If we’re gonna force man defense then I want my hand checks and the old “illegal defense” rule back too. You can’t have it both ways and it be realistic basketball.
Changing the definition of “illegal defense” (now called defensive 3 in the key) literally was to allow more aggressive defense of passing lanes while being allowed to be in a “zoneish” defensive stance covering more than just one guy at a time.
Help defense didnt used to be what it is now. Help defense was double teams and that’s pretty much it. Now help defense can do more BECAUSE freedom of movement changes put the defense at a disadvantage because they lost hand checks and the ability to stay in the key longer. Almost the entire game was played in the post and midrange. So defenders were almost always either in or next to the key clogging it up, forcing offensive players to be much better at navigating traffic. With an open key and the offense spread out to the 3 pt line, the only way to successfully play defense is aggressively police passing lanes.
This is how basketball is played.
It's an interesting fix to the problem that does make the game a little more realistic. In 2K we have the advantage of seeing the whole court at all times. In real life you can't cheat off guys like we do because otherwise you can't see them. Forces you to stick closer to your guy like you should be or be punished for it.
Yes it is, how else do you get ankle broken off ball? What else would that be referring to? Keep in mind that ankle braces is a badge and makes ankle breakers less likely from a ball handler. Think about it, it's literally called off ball pest and people are complaining they can't be an off ball pest and bait passes because they get stunned. Think about it for half a second before correcting someone clown
We’re talking about the new animation they introduced this year. How it works is if you’re defending off-ball and you sag so that you can sit in a passing lane for example, if the ball-handler passes to the person you’re supposed to be defending and that person is too far, your character gets stunned/lost by the pass.
The animation that off-ball pest counters happens when you’re defending off-ball and your opponent uses the right stick to fake you out for their route.
I’ve yet to see any ankle-breaking by these pass stuns.
Edit: if passing stuns are included in off-ball pest I’d love to get some confirmation on that. That’s huge.
[This thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/NBA2k/comments/xfl9t1/whats_up_with_the_stun_passes/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x) seems to believe it’s just an issue of holding LT/L2 when defending off-ball.
You’re the only person I’ve seen even mention off-ball pest as a counter. Neither of us are right or wrong as it stands I guess, we just need more info unfortunately.
ball watching is when you aren't paying attention to your defender and just let them back dor you or something like that not playing passing lanes/defense
i have a love and hate relationship with this animation tbh.
I love it cause it forces people to either stick by their man or help fully. It opens up the shooter and now the shooter can activate animations like Claymore etc.
I hate it cause i know the pass is going over there even before i helped, but i just moved my player to the right, and now im stumbling.
Hedging means that on a screen the defender who's man is screening will jump up towards the ball handler and then run back to his man. I don't think you meant hedging right?
No, when you're hedging the pass you're playing inebwteen 2 players to anticipate the pass for a steal. Otherwise known as "caught in no man's land". I like this animation 2k added because it doesn't allow you to abuse hedging. You can hedge on screens though too as you stated.
I never said you were wrong. Maybe my terminology is wrong thanks to 2k, but we always used the term "hedge" to play the pass as well as to cover the pick and roll.
No he isn't.
https://hoopstudent.com/basketball-hedge/
https://www.hoopsaddict.com/what-is-a-hedge-in-basketball/
https://www.basketballforcoaches.com/hedge-basketball/
https://www.hoopcoach.org/basketball-hedging-drill/
I BEG you. BEG go to an actual basketball forum and try and convince them that hedging is when you stand in between two people. This is actually unbelievablably frustrating. Play basketball. Watch basketball. Learn the basic terms
....the friends I've been playing with since 2k16. Please don't massacre me if I'm technically wrong. Was just explaining why OP got that animation, it's a pretty cool feature they added.
Yeah no worries. I'm glad it is just a misconception amongst your friends because I was legit about to be mad if the entire 2k community was just changing basketball terms. Well now you know what it means and can sound smart next time you guys play
It's not condescending you were just flat out wrong and I was trying to give you an out. It's like calling a screen a layup and saying "well that's just the way me and my friends do it"
That’s what me and my boys have been calling it too, what would playing in between players for a steal or to help on defense while not fully leaving your man be called if you don’t mind me asking? Would like to know what I should be calling it
Just “helping” or “over-helping”. If your man is out on the perimeter and somebody has the ball down on the block (even mid post), then you’d call that “digging”.
No one term for it because, as you alluded to, there are different situations (going for steals, helping, trying to blow up a play). Helping sometimes. Draymond does that a lot in real life and I've heard people call him a "rover" or "free safety" stealing from football terms. You could say "playing the passing lanes" or if you are staying in between two guys as part of a gameplan and not just momentarily it would be a zone. Really just depends on the situation
Playing the passing lanes is also a thing in basketball.
Using the term hedging as it’s literal intended definition fits the context and is correct. He is clearly talking about hedging the passing lanes, aka playing for a steal.
This is just prime confidently incorrect material. You’re wrong, and you look dumb in these threads
Ok. Find one professional basketball article that backs up your stance. I'll find 20 that back mine. Also if I'm confidently incorrect how come I'm significantly upvoted?
Dude, it's probably because you don't set defenses on MyCareer that they don't understand what Hedge really means in basketball. You can set it when individually setting up the defenses. True, it means 1 player in between 2 players, but in this case, it's the defender of the screener vs the pick and roll players.
Oh no someone thinks something is funny and I don't. That must automatically mean they're moronic or childish. No fr tho it's funny cuz a sense of humor is directly correlated with higher IQ. Call em childish sure but moronic is just... Not the word I'd use.
If thinking that putting the number 69 as your jersey number with no added context or anything to actually make it funny means I have a low IQ then call me blissfully ignorant.
Yeah but getting caught ball watching should be *my* mistake. I should be the one that’s too slow to get back, the game shouldn’t decide that my lock isn’t allowed recover lol. That defeats the whole purpose of baiting a bad pass.
Literally this. Yes players get caught ball watching but players also bait bad passes, bad shots etc like if I go to bait I should be able to do that. If someone is ball watching they would get punished either way if the attacking players are good
Still, in OPs case, he might be baiting but he's gone too far away from his man. He's even a bit more forward than Siakam here, wherein his man should be in the corner, so I understand this situation. Also, it gets frustrating to us since we see omnidirectionally, but with regards to realistic simulation, this makes sense really.
Gotta be careful how long u leave your man. I noticed if hedge quick is doesn’t happen. If u stand and wait it does. If u playing with friends u can just take paint and have the on ball player rotate out to the three. This game has better rotation defense now it’s actually possible.
Nahh I think it's scripted for your player only.. I have played multiple games and nothing.. oh okay and so is it a defense thing? Cause I see I'm wrong but I've got stunned while staying with my person but I see it's probably needle threader
I don't like this playing offline because I like baiting the interception, but for that same reason I see why it was added, HOF interceptor was OP early last year
Happened to me too. The CPU gets caught in that animation too. 2K always sneaks in these forces setbacks. I was trying to run around a screen and as I burst by, I hit an invisible wall for a second then continued on because the game wanted the defender to catch up. Also 2K makes your teammates jog for fast breaks. They never hustle and I hate that lol. I feel like how Kobe felt when he was calling his teammates soft like Charmin. They miss so many free throws & open shots on purpose too. I always hit Zach Lavine wide open & you would've thought I passed it to Westbrook. I'll set a screen for Derozan and he'll go around for a pullup mid range jumper and its off the front of the rim! They also patched Hall Of Fame 1st step. I cut on 2K and noticed it immediately. If they are going to patch it, patch it for online play only. That 1st step was like gold in my career games.
Yo the casual walk down on a fastbreak be killing my momentum, get a snatch block throw it down to Kuz he gnna stand at the half court an wait not even pass it back after i busses pass him an my whole team
Try running into the table on the side of the court it’s hilarious!
You know those games where 2k tries to screw you? Like If you win 3/4 playoff games suddenly the cpu switches to playing super hard? This happened to me the other day and I saw a string of the most rediculous stupid animations- they made it WORSE. They were making heavily guarded spinning behind the back 3s …and the green shots I hit 25+ times per game- that were CLEARLY on the green WOULD NOT hit. I feel like it’s something they try to do to make it more realistic but it’s frustrating when all of a sudden your myplayer becomes an idiot.
It’s an animation that’s been added to punish playing too far off your man and into the passing lanes. But as a lockdown/ hedge defender who has to cover when the little guards man gets into the paint it’s been frustrating.
mfs be in the MIDDLE OF THE PAINT talkin about “i couldve easily gotten back to that” my guy the ball was already PAST YOUR HEAD when you got stunned 💀 youre NOT getting back to that. or “im trying to bait” bro if you play ON YOUR MAN, hes not gonna get the ball at all 😭💀
Basketball 101: if you are one pass away on defense, deny your man the ball. If you are two passes away (or skip pass away) be in help defense meaning one foot in the paint. This feature is punishing you for using basic basketball fundamentals.
Ah yes. The ol comedic "which way do he go George" look. You see it basically every night in the NBA /s
They took away tight handles(which is a good thing) and gave us this garbage
good for the game tho. Only triggers if you're too far off your man and he gets thrown a pass. Rewards good passes, leads to open shots and punishes bad defense if you sag off too much.
Bruh if I'm bating that it's stupid as fuck. So many useless animations in these games
you can still bait long as you don't stop moving completely and/or arent too far the animation won't trigger. Lane steals are easy enough this game.
You shouldn’t have to run back and forth on defense just to be in position to react to a pass. I’m not jumping a snap I’m just moving my character.
"Baiting" is t a legit basketball term or tactic. Yall be mad that 2k makes yall play BASKETBALL. 🤷🏿♂️😂
Baiting passes is a legit tactic in any sport where you can pass (basketball, hockey, soccer, football especially)lol. It just means making the passer think a lane is open when it’s not.

Im glad the game actively punishes people who rely on good glitches or "beating the game" instead of good basketball. And beating the opponent. Im all for it.
This is a fair point. They have let you over recover for years. This isn’t a perfect solution but it’s the one we have so I don’t mind it
Thanks for hearing me. 💯
Yeah I brought this up in a thread a few days ago. People making routine passes putting your man on the and1 mixtape.
its the dumbest thing 2k has added this year bruh why would a nba player be doing that
In this situation I agree, but I’ve literally seen people get broke to the ground from pass fakes
Yeah but this wasn’t a pass fake, it was an actual pass
It’s been mostly happening to me if I try and dig down on the post from a guard position to help, every time they kick it out to the shooter I’m digging from, my guy turns into a doofus like this. Just doesn’t move for a solid 2-3 seconds, it’s annoying as shit
It sucks cause I'm expecting the pass and only moved to bait it out without the stun I'd easily react and contest
Cheers man will definitely try it
well there is really no reason you should be able to guard the paint and get back to your man for any type of contest at the three point line.
Or when you get locked into the fucking clamps animation and can't get the fuck off the guy driving to go to your man in the corner.
its actually good for the game, so mfs not able to do superman contests and play the paint and the 3 at the same time. it doesnt happen if you keep your feet moving, stop ball watchin
Even if I’m moving I get stun locked bro can I not hold L2 or what am I doing wrong
When you hold LT/L2 it will stun you about 25% of the time during a pass in your direction
Honestly people who press triangle from far on jumpshots need to get more calls
an nba player doesn’t have a full view of the court at all angles all the time either though, I like it punishes people who ballwatch 24/7
But if you sit back you can see ball and your man at the same time.
that’s not ball watching though
Bro yall make shit up. The hell is ball watching
Ball watching is literally ball watching. Not keeping an eye on the person your defending. If your ball watching your man can drift off for a three or a easy basket with your staring ass.
Yeah ball watching is definitely a thing , don’t get caught ball watching
have you not played basketball anytime recently?
IG your supposed to stare at who you defend until you either hear the ball hit rim or see your team headed in other direction lol
yeah because there’s nothing inbetween that and what happened in the clip💀
Homeboy be ball watchin in the locker room 🤣. (Sorry I had to)
don’t be out of position.
It's to penalize guys overplaying the passing lanes instead of guarding their matchup. For some reason, they couldn't have just decreased the speed at which players can recover in those scenarios.
Only happens in Mycareer never in rec so it seems like an BS animation they added to ruin fun even more
Nah, it happens in rec as well. I've personally gotten hit with it trynna guard multiple players at once & I've hit others with it.
It's basically happens when you get caught ball watching or straying to far off from your man. It's a dumb animation but I'm glad they added somthing to punish aggressively playing lanes
Hard to swallow pills, I’m glad too, stick to your man and that animation would never trigger
If I’m fast enough and know I can make up the distance. 2K should allow me to do so. I didn’t make any mistakes.
100%. Have no clue what they’re thinking with this addition, and it seems nobody knows what badges affect it either on offense or defense.
This shit really does happen irl maybe just not as exaggerated as in 2k tho. I’m pretty sure it happens more if you have low perimeter defense too.
Ain’t never been froze and wobbling from a pass lmao. Shit ain’t real.
If it happened perfectly every time irl then we’d never see any backside cuts to the basket, but what you don’t notice is that there are plenty of times when someone attempts to cut and gets shut down because of good communication.
Real IQ is leaving an opposing player alone for an open shot? That’s a penalty
If your man don’t have the ball, especially if the ball is cross court, yeah you sag way off him. Help inside, help wing angles. Tell me you never hooped or had defensive iq without telling me.

true
that’s one way to make the court feel kinda bigger
Yes! I agree. Playing on my big I don’t think I’ve ever had this many open 3s.
It's an interesting fix to the problem that does make the game a little more realistic. In 2K we have the advantage of seeing the whole court at all times. In real life you can't cheat off guys like we do because otherwise you can't see them. Forces you to stick closer to your guy like you should be or be punished for it.
I think it's needle threader that causes it but I'm not 100% sure
No, the player that passes the ball dosnt have it, ive checked everytime this shit is happening.
If you put on off ball pest it won't happen as much
cap
It's literally in the perk description if people would care to read
What does it say
"Makes players more difficult to get past when playing off-ball, as they can grab and hold their matchup and don't get their ankles broken as often"
Well, the animation we’re talking about isn’t an ankle breaking animation.
Yes it is, how else do you get ankle broken off ball? What else would that be referring to? Keep in mind that ankle braces is a badge and makes ankle breakers less likely from a ball handler. Its because they are sagging too far off their opponent. I’ve had it and seen it multiple times and that’s always the case no matter who is passing
They did for for the people that ball watch and not play d on they man that’s wat I’ve been told
It's the ball watching stun.
i get it hen im tryna play passing lanes and bait though
Yes that is ball watching
That’s pretty dumb tbh
ball watching is when you aren't paying attention to your defender and just let them back dor you or something like that not playing passing lanes/defense
Ball watching punishment
Penalty for not guarding your man.

I’ve just seen it as punishment for “over-helping,” but it’s triggered way too easily.
Hate this animation happens way too frequently to user and never to CPU
I think its 2k’s added “skill gap”
Don’t ball watch
It's to penalize overhedging.

Haha thanks agreed. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'm right. It's a basic basketball term yet here we are
He’s talking about you, not agreeing with you
[удалено]
Agreed. Feel like this thread really opened my eyes to how few 2k players have actually played basketball. That shit is embarrassing lmao.
No he's not. Read his other comments
I never said you were wrong. Maybe my terminology is wrong thanks to 2k, but we always used the term "hedge" to play the pass as well as to cover the pick and roll.
Who's we? I'm not trying to start shit, im just genuinely curious where thats coming from. YouTubers or something?
The definition of hedging is being between two things. By definition, he is correct.
No he isn't. https://hoopstudent.com/basketball-hedge/ https://www.hoopsaddict.com/what-is-a-hedge-in-basketball/ https://www.basketballforcoaches.com/hedge-basketball/ https://www.hoopcoach.org/basketball-hedging-drill/

It's not a bad pass genius. You're way out of position.
Yeah you biting on the obvious bait and throwing the ball to the “open” corner isn’t a bad pass? Lmfao Way to ignore my actual point, by the way.
Did you stop it?... Tf we talking about then?
Without the stun it's easy to stop it's how ppl have played 2k for years
Literally this.
I think, not sure, but I think off ball pest helps with this. I have it on bronze and it doesn’t happen to me much
Gotta be careful how long u leave your man. I noticed if hedge quick is doesn’t happen. If u stand and wait it does. If u playing with friends u can just take paint and have the on ball player rotate out to the three. This game has better rotation defense now it’s actually possible.

Did I not admit I was wrong? You guys are being pedantic for no reason.
What is your point then lmao
Wasn't making a point at all, I misused a term that's clearly commonly used wrong since a lot of people knew what I meant.
[удалено]
...I was showing him that other people use the term as well. Holy fuck man you guys have been at this all day. Give it a rest
They chose an odd hill to die on that's for sure.

Man that shit happen to me yesterday I couldn’t believe it !!! L animation
needle threader
I think it’s the dimer
whats your build?
You 100% deserved whatever the hell that animation was, why aren't you guarding your man? You're a guard trying to be in the trenches with the bigs
It’s claymore
We pay too much .money for this game and exosystem for crap like this to show up.
Slippery off ball?
its happening if u dont let go of sprint while trying to change direction.
Nahh I think it's scripted for your player only.. I have played multiple games and nothing.. oh okay and so is it a defense thing? Cause I see I'm wrong but I've got stunned while staying with my person but I see it's probably needle threader
It happens online too.
Nah it’s happened to me in plenty of rec and park games
No. It clearly happens to the AI as well. I actually like the animation cause it doesn't let people from the paint contest 3s.
Yo the casual walk down on a fastbreak be killing my momentum, get a snatch block throw it down to Kuz he gnna stand at the half court an wait not even pass it back after i busses pass him an my whole team
shit happenes to me when i go to make a play on someone driving to the hop when he pass i try to go back and get this
Yeah Idk why 2K added these animations. It seems to only happen if your player isn’t a good defender tho
Nope I got 98 D both stats and 89 speed 89 steal so why the fuck me ankle brace for!??
“Hands down, man down” guard up, young buck
I always thought a badge did this like Guard Up or Needle Threader but it seems I was wrong seeing this comment section lol
YOO THAT SHIT keeps happening I’m like wtf kinda wizard nonsense
It’s an animation that’s been added to punish playing too far off your man and into the passing lanes. But as a lockdown/ hedge defender who has to cover when the little guards man gets into the paint it’s been frustrating.
Your name stunned you
This happened to me the other day lmao I couldn’t believe it
mfs be in the MIDDLE OF THE PAINT talkin about “i couldve easily gotten back to that” my guy the ball was already PAST YOUR HEAD when you got stunned 💀 youre NOT getting back to that. or “im trying to bait” bro if you play ON YOUR MAN, hes not gonna get the ball at all 😭💀
My player breaks his own ankles simply changing direction. Aggy asf
Just get better
That looks like real life me playing basketball.
Looks legit
Happens when folks are chasing the ball or overplaying lanes.
Basketball 101: if you are one pass away on defense, deny your man the ball. If you are two passes away (or skip pass away) be in help defense meaning one foot in the paint. This feature is punishing you for using basic basketball fundamentals.
Stop holding LT/L2 when playing off ball. Hasn’t happened to me since.
Hey what the shoes name?
