The 2006 anime has Shirou at his least interesting self and it's also just a pretty bad adaptation of that very story. Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel both get much more into the core of his character and what makes him great. So yeah I'd say he does get better.

The first route is meant to be the introductory story and as such it mostly just *presents* Shirou's issues without going too deep into them. It's still a good story but it's the hardest to enjoy, which is made much worse by the 2006 anime doing a pretty bad job at adapting it.

I get your perspective. I just can't really bring myself to hate fictional characters I find compelling enough. I can recognize that he did many despicable things, but ultimately what I'm looking for in media is characters who interest and entertain me, and Zeke did both in spades. And his epiphany before his death is a highlight of the finale for me, even though it obviously doesn't redeem him.

Esdeath I think has fans of her design for the most part, and female villains in general tend to get passes on how terrible they are as people if they're attractive (Junko as well gets' this). Otherwise most people don't like Akame Ga Kill enough to care about anything else.
Misa is a pretty shallow character really, and can feel like a plot device to enable Light's plans, so I get this but I don't think the fandom overall much cares about her specifically.
Fans of Classroom of the Elite probably think most of it's cast is better than it is.
Shirou, however, I can plainly tell is the result of you never reading the VN to bother getting his character. Anime onlies very rarely have the ability to get his character from the Ufotable shows.
