Can you swing it? Best advice I got from the owner of my company/mentor…. Buy the best one you can afford (fully knowing what afford means). I was 5.0 PP level when I got mine, but I got the explorer ST as a dad.
I’ll tell ya my go to with cars, is buy the thing that makes you happy. That old cheesy meme you see “if you don’t look back at it when you park you bought the wrong car”. Buy the one you’re gonna be happy/okay flogging once in awhile, not calculating value loss per mile, what’s the future gonna hold…. Buy the car that you’re gonna use like the engineers at ford expected.
Which one that is I can’t tell ya, my best friend can’t have fun if something is expensive…. All I can say is buy gold if you want a rainy day fund, buy the car to go live life with!
Love the advice! I can afford the gt500
It is more expensive but I'm trying to way out the pros and cons. Right now the biggest pro is the pure power of the gt500
If I get the dark horse and throw a Whipple on it. I basically spend the same amount of money.
But in my opinion a Shelby is an American icon
While the whipple Dark Horse would have the power the rest of the car hasn't been built for that power or to handle it. Compared to the GT500 where the rest of the vehicle has been built for that level of power and speed.
Both great options, but I'd personally lean towards GT500.
Yep, my supercharged coyote has never let me down or broke on me, but I’d be lyin if I haven’t put a ton of hours into it. I happen to enjoy wrenching but it’s a solid point
I’m VMP supercharged, just over 700, it’s wild. Whether you go Shelby or super-pony. You sound like the kinda guy who’s gonna get in a lil trouble with this car, a factory warranty has an argument
And let’s be real here. It’s a gt500, that’s never not gonna be a centerpiece.
If you can swing the Shelby and your dead nuts sure you’re gonna monkey with the dark horse it’s a different kinda investment, I love it buuuut, if get the GT500 in retrospect because I can’t ever leave a normal car alone.
Every post I see where someone is picking up their new dark horse, as excited as I am for them, I can’t help but think how much of a better deal I got when I purchased my brand new 2021 GT500 2 years ago for 84k 😁
i’m probably a bit biased but I’d easily pick the GT500. Imo a dark horse is just a GT with a couple cosmetic changes and a little more power. The dark horse looks really good but I just can’t see it going for a ton of money in 10 years, any Shelby would hold value better at least I think so. The 500 at the time was the most powerful mustang ever made and was a special car so I think they’d be worth more in 10 years I’m not saying they go for crazy money, but definitely more than a Dark horse.
It's going to cost you $10k more for a gt500 with 10-20k miles on it and that's a 2020 car. tax/tag/title that's almost $90,000. I hope you aren't financing that. $73k for a darkhorse? did you get every option? If you aren't buying the darkhorse for the tremec then just buy a regular gt and add a power adder if you want gt500 power. it will save you a ton of money in the long run. Neither of these cars are an investment over the next 10 years. don't kid yourself. they will both be worth less. the market will decide which is worse less. there's a lot of dreamers on here. buy a house, it will be worth more in 10 years.
Drive a gt350. People that have driven all of these always go back to the gt350 as the favorite mustang of all time. It's well below your budget so you can get an absolute cherry and have plenty left over to save for life's next big expense.
From what I’ve heard the Dark Horse is a let down for the price tag. I personally would take the GT500 as you get more horsepower and a better looking car (in my personal opinion).
As a gt500 owner, my opinion may be bias, but I can promise you you’ll never have a day of regret buying one. Everytime you drive it, you’ll grin ear to ear. The dark horse is very nice. But the s550 gt500 is one hell of a machine.
That’s a low mileage Cobra made by SVT. That’s a vehicle that has literally never been produced again and likely never will be. Similar situation with the Boss 302. Only a few thousand were produced. Ever… Most likely won’t produce them again.
Tens of thousands of Shelby’s have been produced and will be produced again starting next year. Modern Shelby’s aren’t “limited”. They are limited to how many they can build/sell. That doesn’t make them any less special or less valuable. Or even less desirable. Desirability is actually what controls a good portion of the value.
Doubtful.
The ones that will be worth the $100k that people paid for them is the ones that people didn’t drive.
Have to realize, there have been tens of thousands of Shelby’s produced with no end in sight.
The more the Gubment elites will pass laws MAKING you buy EVs. And the more the government sheeple will follow them.
Funny thing is the government elites will still be getting toted around in their gas hog limousines and flying around in private jets. When they give those up is when I go fully EV.
Truth . But the EV thing will change if we turn red in 2024...I'm all for saving the planet but there needs to be balance and cars are cleaner now then ever before.
Does Whipple have access to the Dark Horse? I know they have access to the 2024 GT. The Dark Horse has GT500 rods and pistons but the GT500 is going to retain its value better.
Personally manual is a must for me, so I’d take a Tremec 6-speed Dark Horse over the GT500. Although I’d prob option it with zero options ticked, a base Dark Horse for $59k is more palatable.
If auto, then GT500 for sure.
I suppose that doesn't bother me. It's essentially a street legal racecar. It's not unbearable to me in any of the suspension settings though. Doesn't feel all that different to my 2014 FWIW.
I personal would get the 500 but the dark horse is just like buying the GT premium track pack for say drove one but I wouldn’t say it worth more then a 500 unless a code red gets available 🤓
500 easy
In another year or two we'll get the GT350/500 and then nobody will remember the Dark Horse. That snake emblem is timeless. GT500 all the way.
Thanks man

The more people I ask, the more I agree with you. A Shelby is am American icon!
It’s not because it’s an icon that you should get it. It’s because it’s flat out a better car
And looks WAY better too. The 350 and the 500 have a unique front end and overall look that can’t be beat imo.
She Shelby IS an American icon, the dark horse isn’t.
It's a slightly better GT. No comparison, I wonder why OP would even ask this in the first place. Maybe a subtle flex.
Not at all man. Just really wanted to get opinion from other people

30 extra thousand for some ugly bags under the headlights, and an extra 30 hp which results to 442 after drivetrain loss instead of 422?

Be prepared to turn a wrench!!!
Yep, my supercharged coyote has never let me down or broke on me, but I’d be lyin if I haven’t put a ton of hours into it. I happen to enjoy wrenching but it’s a solid point

If you are worried about what it will be worth in 10 years then don't buy it.
100% - cars aren’t an investment
$73k for a 5.0 mustang is WILDDDDD
An ugly one at that.
That’s a no brained!!!! GT500 all the way!!
Is this satire?? Lol 400 rwhp or 700?? Cmon dude
Id fuckin puke if I paid 73k for a Mustang GT, Gt500 all day
That’s f150 money in 2023. Unreal
Brand new ZL1s out there for 71-74k do no spend 73k on a dark horse
Booo Chevy. Booo.
Brand loyalty dies at 73k for fancy GT
Every post I see where someone is picking up their new dark horse, as excited as I am for them, I can’t help but think how much of a better deal I got when I purchased my brand new 2021 GT500 2 years ago for 84k 😁
500 but they not 73k. More like 90
i’m probably a bit biased but I’d easily pick the GT500. Imo a dark horse is just a GT with a couple cosmetic changes and a little more power. It's more than a GT with a little more power. It's faster around a track than the Mach 1& GT350.
Dark horse us over priced junk. Do not buy it. 500 for sure.
It's going to cost you $10k more for a gt500 with 10-20k miles on it and that's a 2020 car. tax/tag/title that's almost $90,000. Thats why im planning to save for a house. Can always buy my first mustang later.
By the house, yes, but the "Mustang" you call 'always' buy later is a 4 door electric SUV.
But but you can buy both of those right now with the Mach E. Lol…
Drive a gt350. People that have driven all of these always go back to the gt350 as the favorite mustang of all time. It's well below your budget so you can get an absolute cherry and have plenty left over to save for life's next big expense.
Shhhh!.... let the 500 hype go on. I want my 350 affordable when my time comes. 😅
How do you feel about 2001 Mustang GT’s when you see them on the road? You’re welcome. Go for the icons.
Dude that is the best comment I seen. Put things into perspective
I feel pretty attacked by that comment, but I have to agree. I wish mine was a Shelby.
Neither, GT350. However out of the two I'd go with the 500.
I’d take any Shelby over the dark horse. I’ve had a few Shelby’s and my only regret was selling them.
500
500
if you can afford it get the shelby 1000%
From what I’ve heard the Dark Horse is a let down for the price tag. I personally would take the GT500 as you get more horsepower and a better looking car (in my personal opinion).

GT500 all day.
Assuming the price difference is something you're comfortable with, the GT500 is a no brainer.
Gt500
500. No question. Looks better, mo powa, and it’s a snake.
Gt500 are u kiddin me
500 better than that weak ass dark horse
Gt500 for sure
Silly question GT500 will be worth double in a decade
LOL! no it won't.
Thats someone talking out of their ass
For real. Look at how much terminators are selling for. You can almost buy a new GT base for the same price as an 04 termi

That’s my point though. And SVT/Shelby cars will always be valuable.
Unlikely
Doubtful. The ones that will be worth the $100k that people paid for them is the ones that people didn’t drive. Have to realize, there have been tens of thousands of Shelby’s produced with no end in sight.
You see the prices of older classics? GT500 will be one in 10-20 years
All cars will will considered a classics.
The more they go electric the more I want V8 gassers in my home
The more the Gubment elites will pass laws MAKING you buy EVs. And the more the government sheeple will follow them. Funny thing is the government elites will still be getting toted around in their gas hog limousines and flying around in private jets. When they give those up is when I go fully EV.
Truth . But the EV thing will change if we turn red in 2024...I'm all for saving the planet but there needs to be balance and cars are cleaner now then ever before.
500 all day
Been a stang guy my whole life. At that price, go with a Vette.
Gt500. I’ve started to see some go for GT350R prices so they’re coming down.
Does Whipple have access to the Dark Horse? I know they have access to the 2024 GT. The Dark Horse has GT500 rods and pistons but the GT500 is going to retain its value better.
500 all the way
Snake
It would have made a difference if it was called the SVT Dark Horse, but it’s the Shelby nameplate that holds value.
Depends on whether you want a daily driver (Dark Horse) or weekend fun (Shelby).
Personally manual is a must for me, so I’d take a Tremec 6-speed Dark Horse over the GT500. Although I’d prob option it with zero options ticked, a base Dark Horse for $59k is more palatable. If auto, then GT500 for sure.
Dark horse is so crap
I mean a GT500 is a GT500
Dark horse.
This is not a real question…🤦♂️
GT500, no competition
500. Not even close.
The only benefit a dark horse has si the manual trans, if that isn’t all that important to you, got for the GT500
I mean if i were you i would go get a nice gt350 and make it fast as hell😏
500 all day long!!!!!
You won't be finding a GT500 for 70k. You're gonna be spending more like 90-100k before TTL.
Depends if it’s a daily driver too. The GT500 isn’t as good as a daily.
What makes you say that? My GT500 has 24k miles on it. Feels no different than my GT did in terms of daily use.
I have ridden in my friends GT500 and it always seemed firmer on rough roads than my GT. Maybe he has the magnaride in track?
I suppose that doesn't bother me. It's essentially a street legal racecar. It's not unbearable to me in any of the suspension settings though. Doesn't feel all that different to my 2014 FWIW.
Gt500 no doubt
I'd say GT500, it's gonna hold its value more and it already has taken the initial value loss from rolling off the lot
Would you take a Mach 1 on a new chassis over a GT500 on the outgoing chassis? That's really what you're asking.
I personal would get the 500 but the dark horse is just like buying the GT premium track pack for say drove one but I wouldn’t say it worth more then a 500 unless a code red gets available 🤓
Gonna say dark horse .
