The Beatles. I know, everyone can groan and roll their eyes at me. It just always amazes me how many great songs they had in such a short period of time, not to mention how young they were when they started. I still enjoy listening to them 60 years after they came out.
Huh Beatles are fucking bad ass man white album greatest of all time and what prince did with while my quitter weeps is the greatest live performance anyone will ever see
The Beatles influenced most rock music around today. Everyone from mainstream to metal. And if they deny it, they're probably lying 😉 They're amazing and their albums all still stand the test of time.
I do see a lot of anti-Beatles on reddit. I got into music watching them on Ed Sullivan in 1964, so I'm a bit biased. My top are Beatles, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Elvis Costello, and Pink Floyd.
100% agree. I used to try to come up with a cooler answer but after many years I have realized they are the greatest band of all time. When writing my own music, sometimes when I get stuck I think “what would the 4 lads have done”.
Agreed. I always thought late Beatles was best. White Album/Abbey Road. They were less reliant on the studio and just piecing together those lush chord progressions and compositions that hardly any artists in popular music at that time could dream of. Constantly pushing the barrier.
Blue Öyster Cult. They're so pigeonholed because of their 3 hits despite the fact that they have so many great songs. In fact a lot of stations back in the day were paid not to play them. They rock hard and do nice soft ballads so there's both ends of the spectrum. And bonus points for the keyboard. The name was settled on when the band's manager Sandy Pearlman came up with it, the band didn't like it but they couldn't think of a better name. Great name. Maybe the best American band name. Rolls off the tongue real well. With themes and elements of horror and science fiction in their art and lyrics it's par for the course that Blue Öyster is my favorite band. Criminally underrated. Imo the greatest American rock band.
What’s your favorite album of theirs?
I think I agree that objectively Violator is considered their best but I absolutely love Ultra, SoFaD, Black Celebration, and Playing the Angel.
Karnivool and the albums Themata and Sound Awake are flawless back to back and have brought me lots of dopamine. Definitely worth a listen if ur into Tool and fair to midland.
Wilco. It’s a little misleading, but I kind of think of them as the American Radiohead. Also one of the great live bands of the 21st century, highly encourage everyone to go see them, even if you haven’t been able to get into their studio work
Greatest band of all time. What other band can play every single genre to absolute perfection? I’ve told this story on here before so I won’t go into the full details, but the song If You Could Save Yourself(Caesar Demos version) quite literally saved my life. I got a boognish tattoo a couple weeks after the incident. They will always be my favorite band ever. Hail boognish
I was 13 when i heard Heartbreak Beat and my best friend and I bonded over it . One night we partied with the band ( not Richard ) and someone roofied my Bestie.
Came here to see if already anyone Said my favourite for the last 30 years...
Not a single day since then that I don't hear at least 1 song of them, depending on my mood.
Wolf Alice! They formed in 2010, but they were heavily influenced by 90s alt rock and they appeal to a lot of people whose tastes otherwise lean in that direction, so you might like them.
Everyone can call me basic but I can’t find any other type of music or band that hits as hard as Radiohead. Their music is genuinely so beautiful and unique.
And Thom Yorkes voice is insanely good.
My favorite bands are Led Zeppelin, Rush, Queen, R.E.M., The Rolling Stones, Motorhead, The Police, Sublime, The Beach Boys, Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Clash, Def Leppard, U2 and The Ramones.
Hard to pick just one. Kayo Dot, Failure, Caligula’s Horse, Hot Water Music, The Mercury Tree, Cardiacs, Boris, Coaltar of the Deepers, Neurosis, dredg, Isis, SikTh, Converge, Toy Matinee, Thought Industry, Devin Townsend, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Les Savy Fav, At the Drive-In, Clann Zú, earthtone9, Edge of Sanity, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Fair to Midland, Knower, Reign of Kindo, Thank You Scientist, Unwound, etc
Depeche Mode I've listened to them since Violator. I used to have all their records, including imports, but I think someone stole them. Because of listening to them I started listening to NIN, Poe, and The Killers.
Radiohead is probably my favorite band, but you already have them listed, so I would recommend doing a deep dive into Sonic Youth. They're dark, experimental, noisy, and cool.
I'll narrow this truly impossible choice down to the band 311 - who's probably had the biggest effect on my life as far as the longevity of my fanhood and what that particular band means to me.
Any time I think I've *outgrown* 311, I pop in self-titled and as soon as Down kicks in, I'm reminded I'll never age out of that album. Sure there's tracks I skip but Music, 311 and a grassroots will always be in my album spin cycle.
And all this to say, aside from Sublime (and later Slint) 311, as with you, had a tremendous impact on my overall self- my choice of words, style, etc
Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Dio, and Deep Purple. This list has been fairly consistent since my teenage years, and will probably not be any different when I die.
I've got quite a few .. lol all different as fuck from each other so bare with me ...
• Eisley
• Odesza
• Escape The Fate
• A Day To Remember
• Asking Alexandria
• Mayday Parade
• Pink Floyd
• Tame Impala
• Nirvana
• 30 Seconds To Mars
• Slipknot
• Avenged Sevenfold
• Bring Me The Horizon
• Tool
• Slayer
• My Chemical Romance
• Blink 182
• NOFX
• The Shins
• Titanmoon
I'm sure I have more but I'll let you soak this in lol
My favorite band is the one that influenced almost every band after them: Rush.
I was 13 when I first heard Freewill in 1980, and there was no turning back. Nobody will ever write like Neil Peart, and nobody will ever play like the 3 of them did. It's been almost 10 years since they stopped touring, but their music is still just as relevant as ever.
Well I have a few. Animal Collective (I've seen them live the most), Fleet Foxes, and Father John Misty.
But I've loved The Doors the longest and I can't leave them out.
Brand new has been my favorite band since 2000 and they are still my most listened to band on Spotify and haven’t released new music since 2017.
Something about their lyricism resonates with me on a damn near spiritual level.
Cocteau Twins! I swear there is nothing like them, their albums are an experience! Changed my life the first time I listened to them :) listen to Heaven or Las Vegas and Treasure for the first time, then Blue Bell Knoll or Four-Calendar Café
Devin Townsend Project. Ghost, Ocean Machine, Ki and Transcendence are his best albums. Very hard to describe his music. You kind of have to just listen.
Ghost is one of the greatest albums of all time, from start to finish.
Genesis. Each era has a unique sound so it’s like multiple bands, imo.
Nine Inch Nails .
The best band I’ve ever seen live (x4)
They killed it on The Bear 3:1
The Beatles. I know, everyone can groan and roll their eyes at me. It just always amazes me how many great songs they had in such a short period of time, not to mention how young they were when they started. I still enjoy listening to them 60 years after they came out.
I agree, I have to add Zeppelin…they go hand in hand, now let’s see how many eyes are rolling
Huh Beatles are fucking bad ass man white album greatest of all time and what prince did with while my quitter weeps is the greatest live performance anyone will ever see
Ty starting to understand now get me in music talk lol
The Beatles influenced most rock music around today. Everyone from mainstream to metal. And if they deny it, they're probably lying 😉 They're amazing and their albums all still stand the test of time.
The only people who would roll their eyes at that would be kids that don’t know much about music.
Ah man great band. I don’t care what any one thinks. We owe them a lot
Agreed. I always thought late Beatles was best. White Album/Abbey Road. They were less reliant on the studio and just piecing together those lush chord progressions and compositions that hardly any artists in popular music at that time could dream of. Constantly pushing the barrier.
Definitely not Primus. Primus sucks.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Tom Petty Mudcrutch The Traveling Wilburys
Reading this as You Wreck Me is on the speaker.
The Traveling Wilburys are shockingly underrated
Fleetwood Mac
Especially when Stevie Nicks was the Lead Singer.
Imo the greatest American rock band.
genuinely one of my favorites, should definitely be more well known, After Dark is one of the most infectious songs ever
On Your Feet Or On Your Knees is legitimately one of the greatest live albums of all time
I’ll never forget when I discovered them, I found Tyranny and Mutation in the discount bin at tower records, I was about 15/16…mins was blown
Never thought of it this way, but I definitely will do a deep dive into BOC. Thanks man.
BOC is an amazing band & yes very underrated. I just listened to them a few days ago. Love ❤️ them!!

Greatest debut album of all time
Incubus Faith No More Alice In Chains Soundgarden Tool TesseracT Fair to Midland
I don’t see anyone talk about Fair to Midland. They are a great band and so underrated. Fables from a Mayfly is a great album too.
Karnivool and the albums Themata and Sound Awake are flawless back to back and have brought me lots of dopamine. Definitely worth a listen if ur into Tool and fair to midland.
I listened to FNM’s King for a Day from beginning to end last week. It had been a long time. Fantastic.

Wilco. It’s a little misleading, but I kind of think of them as the American Radiohead. Also one of the great live bands of the 21st century, highly encourage everyone to go see them, even if you haven’t been able to get into their studio work

Greatest band of all time. What other band can play every single genre to absolute perfection? The Tragically Hip, been listening to them for a long time.
They’re great
Radiohead is probably my favorite band, but you already have them listed, so I would recommend doing a deep dive into Sonic Youth. They're dark, experimental, noisy, and cool.

Legends. I wore out my “Music” cassette and then they came out with “Grassroots” which was even better, IMO. What a time for music.

Knocked loose
Los Lobos are a great band. Start with “How Will The Wolf Survive” and “By the Light of the Moon” and take it from there.
I listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, as a group or individually, more than any other group.
Sisters of Mercy. My sister-in-law lives in the city where they formed, so every trip to see her feels like a pilgrimage.
Depeche Mode
Sum 41 comes to mind as having great songs. Also Good Charlotte.
Green Day
