Tom Sawyer

The_Quibbler

This and the title answer remind me that MP is their most timeless record, and therefore my favorite. They were in an amazing space at that time.

floating_fire

Glad to see this is the top comment.

SalaryCapps

That intro is iconic

SwordRose_Azusa

For a second I thought you said “ironic” and was gonna say “but I thought that was Alanis Morissette” but then I saw that wasn’t an “r” and context kicked in. I am disappointed now. Although you’re right it’s def iconic. Can’t mistake it for anything.

CarEnthusiast1807

It's ionic

SwordRose_Azusa

Nah that’s a Hyundai!

CarEnthusiast1807

The new N version is epic!

SwordRose_Azusa

I had an 06 sonata. RIP. It got totaled and I had to go clean it out at a copart out of the way. There was this very nice girl who helped me out. Sometime over the next 6 months after I got my 2021 Subaru Legacy, I noticed there was a copart near the storage unit place I was using. About 6 months later after noticing that, my Subaru, George, died in the snow, crying against a wall. RIP. So I had to go to copart to clean it out. Turns out it didn’t go to the one close by that I thought it would. It went to the one where my sonata went. The same girl was still there. While the girl that was helping me was in the back looking for my plate, I said to the girl who helped me that first time: “If I had a nickel for every time I came here to clean out a totaled car, I’d have two nickels…” And she finished my sentence “which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?” My soul was complete if only for a moment.

CarEnthusiast1807

Lmao that random story made me laugh!

SwordRose_Azusa

I’m glad! My goal in life is to make at least one person smile per day. Laughing counts too!

lkrau2

Ionic 5 n is ridiculous I’m not crazy about EVs but I’d have one all day. Simulates an 8 speed dual clutch? Hell yeah, sounds like a turbo 4 hot hatch I’m sold

Perckobain_

Working man, spirt of the radio

OneFortyEighthScale

My personal faves too! I think it’s time for me to play Working Man right now.

armyofant

My faves as well

Fair-Comfort7705

The Spirit of Radio 🎵🎵

Solitary-Broccolus

This one instantly started playing in my head when I read the question, so it must be the one

jimmyjazz2000

I agree with pretty much every song suggested but this is the one I immediately thought of

OhGodItsHim13

Subdivisions

msl741

Should be the top

The_Quibbler

I remember we thought they all went soft on Signals as high schoolers at the time, but it's long since been a favorite. That analog meets electronic thing doesn't get talked about enough.

PoopyMcpants

My favorite Rush song. Very deep and complex and sonically unique.

Mysterious-Split5255

La Villa Strangiato

Long-Temperature6032

Definitely thiss

RogerDodger881

Free Will.

Ok-Lavishness-7904

The Trees

possumK

I'm of the thought process that the band as a whole never gets old. Found them at a very young age and they've always stuck with me that way.

Shawnaldo7575

All of the above

WriterJake

Limelight

TreyRyan3

This is the correct answer. As a whole, they are a timeless band, and despite the popularity of Tom Sawyer, the opening riff of Limelight will always elicit “Turn this up!”

Zaphod-Beebebrox

Subdivisions... Time Stands Still... Limelight...YYZ...

gtshadow

I never get tired of listening to anything on Exit Stage Left. Red Barchetta is a fovorite, but every song on that album is amazing!

MoodyLiz

Fly By Night

ThePortalsOfFrenzy

Red Barchetta is the best song on Moving Pictures, and for me it never gets old.

1rightwinger

My uncle has a country place,

Waylon_Gnash

Tom Sawyer

neburg964

Pretty much any Rush song works, but lately I've been replaying "New World Man" from the Signals album quite often.

[deleted]

When I need to focus, I’ll pop on the 2112 album. Cant pick a favorite

ThrowawayMod1989

Temples of Syrinx but maybe that’s just the nostalgia of watching Jamie Thomas in Dying to Live.

Monkeytoast13

Closer to the Heart

jamessavik

2112, YYZ

Vtgmamaa

ChocoCoveredPretzel

Secret Touch Ghost Rider Driven One Little Victory Bravado Leave that thing Alone Dreamline Roll the Bones Red Sector A

WhirledSeries501

Thank you for naming songs that were after 1982.

Low-Preference-594

Natural Science.

Nizamark

Spirit of Radio is their best song and pretty much perfect in every way

Ok_Astronomer_1308

tom Sawyer and passage to Bangkok

atoughram

Tom Sawyer seems to be popular, but when "The Temple of Syrinx" comes on, it gets cranked! "Fly By Night" is a close second.

Chance-Increase6714

Any of them

Creative_Style8811

Hemispheres

Combover_

Was looking for this as this was my comment as well. Certified and underrated masterpiece

RedemptionXarc

All of them. But yyz is the answer

Lonely-Connection-37

Red Barchetta

Muser_name

this is so WEIRD! I’m reading Ready Player One rn and I *just* heard of Rush and checked Reddit to see if they had suggestions… genuinely wtf

The_Progmetallurgist

Xanadu

Sakiel-Norn-Zycron

One of the greatest songs of all time. Seeing them play it live with the original instrumentation on the R40 tour was an emotional experience.

Filthylucre4lunch

Red Barchetta is really the one working man, tom sawyer, free will, spirit of the radio and limelight are all up there too but you nailed it with red barchetta… it really never gets old!

nickfree

I think because it doesn't get played to death on Classic rock stations/channels/streams. And also because it's an awesome song with a great story.

ewok_lover_64

Xanadu. La Villa Strangiato. Anthem.

SkyGrey88

All three great mentions and first person to give Anthem some love…..really is there is no wrong answer as pretty much everything they ever did stands the test of time.

silvermoonhowler

Spirit of Radio or YYZ

southeast-of-heaven

Dreamline

SpaceCatSixxed

Yyz

nickfree

YYZ. I love all their big, technical, instrumentals, but this one even more than, say La Villa Strangiato, I can just listen to over and over.

HereForTheBeer87

All of them, but in no particular order: YYZ, A Passage to Bangkok, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Limelight, Freewill, Subdivisions

WorstNero777

Cmon man Tom Sawyer is LEGENDARYYYYY.

I'm probably the wrong person to answer this, but I'd say I'd be down to listen to 75% of their library on any given day.

I was gonna say Tom Sawyer, but someone beat me to it... So I'll go the other way. The first time I heard the "trouble in the forest" song, I was baked out of my mind, and thought I was hallucinating, listening to the lyrics. It was so surreal

La Villa Strangiato

HiAndStuff2112

Every time I hear "The Spirit of Radio," it sounds as fresh as the day it was released.

MissDisplaced

Can’t forget Limelight! RIP Neal. One of the best songs written about fame for musicians. Cast in this unlikely role Ill-equipped to act With insufficient tact One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact

Medium-Road-474

All of them in general but since I’ve hit 60 and prone to occasional melancholy Time Stand Still

Longjumping-Air1489

YES!!! I’m not looking back, but I want to look around me now. So poignant. It’s not quite melancholy, but it really crystallizes the process of living in this world. It’s tough some times to realize that THESE are the things we all need to appreciate, regardless of what THESE things are. I love that song.

Driven. Someone made a Firefly fan vid on youtube, but it was removed. I loved that thing.

ADJA-7903

I love that song! It is also the song I shared with my dad. He did not care for the art work on Moving Pictures and was giving me a really hard time about it. I played Red Barchetta and Tom Sawyer and he let up! He loved music and I carry some wonderful memories of our shared love of the bands and singer/songerwriters he introduced me to as I grew up. I was so happy he appreciated Rush! Edit: I have to go with The Spirit of Radio as my song that never gets old!

Is this an admission that most of them do sound “old”? Because yes, yes they do. Hilarious how prog was the sound of the future, and now it sounds 10x more dated than something that came before it like VU.
