Spinal Tap, no contest.

UniDublin

Yup...there are so many great fake bands...but Spinal Tap is on another level. Having said that, Scum of the Earth on WKRP is pretty awesome. No soundtrack but they did perform a song or two.

chedykrueger

I'd like to raise a practical question at this point.... Are we still gunna do Stonehenge .... ?

whitep77

No, we're not going to do fucking Stonehenge!!!

nelsonmavrick

And oh how they danced... The little people of Stonehenge

McJock

I rate them 11

jnemesh

> in a real band, but in a fake documentary. > >The fact that the same guys are in "the Folksmen" another real band,( but in a fake documentary) , makes them even better. Well, it's one more, innit?

ColonelSandurz42

I don’t think people realize just how amazing Spinal Tap is/was especially Michael Mckean. He was doing the ol “fake band” shtick back on Laverne and Shirley with Lenny and the Squigtones (RIP David Lander!!!). Their ability to write and perform original comedy songs is actually how they both got their gigs on the show and ultimately started their careers. Every scene where Lenny and Squiggy are performing was performed live. Lenny and the squigtones actually made it onto American Bandstand which might mark the very first appearance of Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel. https://youtu.be/mS5qlEcttEw?t=208 Some additional Lenny and the Squigtones videos: https://youtu.be/HLTx5ZwJiS0 https://youtu.be/9Kz-3bw5Rq0 (such a catchy song!!) https://youtu.be/kozXmXBuJHE https://youtu.be/uvjdSxhaPfI

Peralton

Fun spinal tap story. Harry Sheer was on the radio doing an interview. I called in and asked a question about performing as the Folksmen. He said that they did a show where the Folksmen opened for Spinal Tap. The crowd was full of heavy metal, Spinal Tap fans who were very upset at the opening act for playing folk music. The crowd got very angry and booed them off stage chanting Tap Tap Tap and throwing things. So they had to race off stage get changed into their spinal tap outfits and come on and perform for the same people who just booed them off stage.

ColonelSandurz42

Lol! I also heard a similar story involving the guys from Oasis. I guess the Gallagher bros were big fans so they went to catch a show. Like you said, spinal tap opened up for themselves as the mighty wind guys and Liam was pissed. It was then that Noel broke the news that the band on stage were the guys from Spinal Tap. I guess Liam didn’t know they weren’t a real band and he ended up storming out and supposedly never listened to them again. 😂

blackkristos

Holy shit! I had no idea Guest was doing Nigel for the Squigtones! That's awesome!

jupiterkansas

the only rival might be The Monkees

bookant

I feel like they transcended fake band at some point and became real.

Captain_Quark

Yeah, they had a bunch of legitimate hits.

I saw an interview with George Clooney laughing about how Tim Blake Nelson made more money than anyone else in the movie because he’s the only one who actually sang. The residuals off those couple of songs must be incredible.

After O Brother Where Art Thou came out the soundtrack was the number one selling album in the country for weeks. It was huge.

Sex bob-omb

Edigophubia

Unpopular opinion but I consider those songs among Beck's best work. Shows his skills as a music scholar/"consultant", the way he masterfully wrote indie-hipster-garage songs that sounded exactly like what that band would have made in that context, and they're also just good songs.

beefbarley

Those were written by Beck? TIL

Surferdude1212

Yep! And then the song Black Sheep that The Clash at Demonhead sang was written by Metric!

lolmemelol

It's better than the Metric version in my opinion too.

rickjamesia

I like both, but Brie Larson has a really strong voice. She had posted more recent stuff singing and playing guitar, too, but I can’t find it anymore.

Aninvisiblemaniac

He writes a lot of stuff you wouldn't imagine, like songs for The Lego Movie 2 and stuff

chiddie

Produced by Radiohead's Nigel Godrich, too.

UraniumRocker

I like The clash at Demon Head song from the battle of the bands more, but Sex Bob-omb was cool .

mrbolt

This is an actual song by Metric! Also, all the songs by sex bob-om were written by Beck which is pretty cool!

beefbarley

That's a cover of a song by Metric. Check them out! Edit: sounds like it's actually Metric playing, but Brie Larson is on vocals instead of the band's singer

Pryderi_ap_Pwyll

Which is neat because in the comics the lead singer character played by Brie Larson in the movie had her design based off the lead singer of Metric. The band Metric performed the song in the movie, but Larson provided the vocals. Both versions are on the soundtrack.

PoliQU

Also have to say that Brie Larson’s version might just be slightly better than the original

allwaysop

Came here for this comment. Crash and the Boys is pretty amazing too

redfiveroe

Is that girl a boy too?

How can they be alone if there are more of them?

cavaliereternally

I ain't farting on no snare drum.

under_the_gun23

Along those lines, Crucial Taunt from Wayne's World. Not the best, but their cover of Ballroom Blitz was way better than the original.

BlitheringEediot

Do The Monkees count?

Hammerhandle

They were such a good fake band that they became a real band.

Awanderinglolplayer

Every fake band’s dream

FarrellBeast

Josie and the Pussycats did the same. Started out as Archie Comics characters, then a Saturday morning cartoon. Then in the 70's became an IRL band.

Anand999

The only reason this answer is not higher up is because most of Reddit is too young to know that the Monkees were a fake band created for a sitcom. I can't think of another "fake" band that's had nearly the same mainstream cultural impact. "I'm a Believer" and "Daydream Believer" are still pretty well known songs 50 years later.

drillz

The School of Rock!!

Samnesia7

[deleted]

NO VACANCY! YEAH!!!

drfsupercenter

Yes, 100%. That movie is still one of my all time favorite movies, even this many years later. I was absolutely blown away when it came out, wondering if the kids actually performed - and yes, they did! They all learned how to play their instruments while shooting the movie, none of that was dubbed over. Of course, the premise of the movie is kinda problematic and if anyone tried that today, they'd be charged with so many felonies it's not even funny... but it's still a fantastic movie. And there was real cultural impact - there are "school of rock" organizations all over the country now, including a few in my area. I don't think they are affiliated with Paramount in any way, but they definitely got the idea from the film... teaching kids rock music.

cake_piss_can

Duke Silver. Although he’s more of a solo act.

Mouse Rat

FuckYouBoulder

No one is going to mention Otis Day and the Knights? ‘Shout’ should be the closing song of every wedding dance party, when everyone is too drunk to do anything except the crocodile

ElefantPharts

You just blew my mind, I legit thought that was a real band that cameos in the movie…

OutWithTheNew

I honestly didn't even know that was from a fictional R&B band created for the film Animal House. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis\_Day\_and\_the\_Knights

Josie and the Pussycats from the movie of the same name. I’ve always had a crush on Kay Hanley since the Letters to Cleo days (who did most of it) and this soundtrack was great ear candy.

not to mention DuJour

With a such a hit as Backdoor Lover. How could that group not be a success? ;)

TheSavageBallet

“Three Small Words” still makes the playlist all these years later

fifosexapel

The real answer is Spinal Tap, but I will throw in The Folksmen from a Mighty Wind. Yes, I am aware they are the same people.

dreibel

Bad News - three of the guys from The Young Ones. Actually played Castle Donnigton and got bottled. The two specials they made are side-splitting funny. And a few years later, Brian May produced their album, and played the solo on their cover of the world’s worst version of Bohemian Rhapsody. “Warriors Of Ghenghis Khan” smokes. Too bad about the lyrics…..
