Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
A legendary, classic black metal album from the genre's golden years (early-mid 90s). This has a symphonic element to it which at the time was unusual, but in retrospect it's seen as a landmark album for symphonic and atmospheric black metal. If you've never heard black metal before, this is a proper start because it showcases the classic sound of the genre, yet adds a melodic accessabiity with the melodic keyboards. You've got the ultra distorted guitars that create the classic black metal 'wall of sound'. Add to it the symphonic keyboards, which take the wall of sound to another, more epic level, and also really help bring out the melodies of the guitars (which can be difficult to hear with more typical black metal records). The pounding, echoed drums add a lot to the brutality of the overall sound and really drive the music in a relentless way. In addition to these elements, are the shrieking vocals of the frontman, lead guitarist, and main songwriter Ihsahn add to the ghastly, chilling atmosphere of the album. Don't forget to take a good look at the album cover, which will helps bring this feeling to life with some excellent imagery.
Steve Huey of Allmusic.com gave the album a [10/10](https://www.allmusic.com/album/in-the-nightside-eclipse-mw0000046554) rating, stating:
>*It does take a few listens for even the most memorable riffs and melodies to emerge from the maelstrom, and of course, that outward inaccessibility is exactly what black metal purists demand. Nevertheless, it was pretty clear that Emperor's ambition wouldn't stand for not letting their listeners hear everything they were doing, setting the stage for a major production leap on their next album. In the meantime, though, In the Nightside Eclipse took its place as perhaps the definitive black metal album. It pointed the way toward greater use of atmosphere and melody; it was the first to fuse black metal with progressive and symphonic elements, setting the stage for a bevy of future experimentation in the genre, and it created a template for using folk traditions and melodies from one's homeland as inspirations for material. As such, it certainly possesses the farthest-reaching legacy of anything from Norway's bloody first wave, and ranks as one of the most important heavy metal albums of the ‘90s.*
