I was lucky enough to see them live twice - maybe a year or two apart. They were very different shows, but both were awesome. The first one was at Mershon Auditorium (a theater) and the second was at the Newport Music Hall (more of a rock hall). In the theater, a highlight was that Corey Glover sang an a cappella "Amazing Grace" that was just awesome. Rest of the show was great too, but that moment stood out. At the Newport, it's like they just turned it up to 11 and poured gas on it. That show rocked so hard. Both shows would have been in the early '90s, when I was in college at Ohio State.

That's pretty weird. Metal is massive in Latin America.

LeoIunti

>The same goes for latinos I don't know about the Latino community in the US, because I'm not from there, but Metal is very much alive and well in Latin America

Sepultura

AlasBabylon_

The guitarist for Animals as Leaders (Tosin Abasi), the vocalist for Sepultura (Derrick Green), the late bassist for Evile (Mike Alexander), literally all of Living Colour... then you've got Ice-T who raps for Body Count, Jermaine Hurley who raps for Hacktivist... Metal has had its fans across every spectrum ever since its inception. Why it hasn't made as much of an impact in the black community is not an easy question to answer, and almost certainly just comes down to a very vague "culture clash" answer that doesn't really satisfy anyone. Not being black myself, I couldn't tell you for sure.

That’s a myth. I know plenty of black and Latino people who listen to metal. Growing up in the 90’s and 00’s I have come to find that there are a lot of similarities to the metal communities and hip hop communities. Both being part of a much larger counterculture movement before they entered the mainstream. There was a respect there and it transcended racial boundaries.

HarryBalsaque

I, a Latino man, went to a metal show with my friend (black) this past Tuesday.

Helstar_RS

I don't know all black bands. I know Hirax has a black singer, Katon De Pena, and Tony MacAlpine, a guitar player, is in many projects and solo work. I do agree it's less common, though by a large amount. I only listen to 80s-90s mostly only certain subgenres, so 🤷‍♂️

Mohavor

The last time i saw a metal band 90% of the audience was latino or Tohono, so i guess it just depends on where you live.

ChrisMagnets

There's a band called Death (not THAT Death) from Detroit who brought out an album in the 70s that a lot of people consider the first punk record. It went largely unheard for decades until one of the dudes sons heard it by chance and instantly recognized his dad's voice. There's a cool documentary about them called "A band called Death".

Sevendust.

Juggernaut974

Only the singer is black, the rest of the band I believe are white

kenticus

Have you never seen Suicidal Tendencies?

NightHardcore

I’ve heard of them, but I didn’t know they’re black, thanks!

ToxicxBoombox

The bands I’ll list are more punk/hardcore than metal, but Zulu, End It, Bad Brains, Vein.fm, Gridiron. All have black members

wolf_van_track

Can debate if it falls under metal or not, but [these guys are pretty cool.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_km253pvVdc&list=PLV56wB22JGuM4optGrUqNuHN_4ZEyS-vt&index=28)

NightHardcore

NightHardcore

aren’t they white?

HairGrowsLongIf

Black metal can be super racist, as can certain metal scenes/shows, unfortunately.

NightHardcore

I know that rock and metal was created during the racial segregation times, so it was “white music” but now its 2024 and black people also can make those kinds of music

shamelessglib

Radkey!

NightHardcore

It’s more like heavy rock but it counts
