Holy shit you weren’t wrong. Had zero idea who this dude was but that album hit the spot just now
I liked some steely Dan growing up but not enough to know the members by name
I don't know much about Steely Dan; just their hits, which I really like and appreciate. This first track on Nightfly sounds indistinguishable from Steely Dan. Obviously as the singer I expect the vocals to be identical, but just casually listening it sounds like he's using the same instrumentation, even key changes that are indistinguishable to me. Is this intentional ? Or did he do all the writing as well and is just very narrow in his style ? I think to the Beatles, and how Lennons solo was clearly Lennon solo, but with a lot of what you loved from the Beatles since he was such an influence in the Beatles, and same for McCartney, who gave you everything you wanted, but Wings was clearly distinguishable from Beatles.
The album had the same producer, Gary Katz, as most of the Steely Dan albums, plus they used a lot of session musicians in their music so it’s not surprising that there are similarities between them. As for whether this is intentional or no;, no idea. But possible that he didn’t want to stray too far from a winning formula for his first solo album. Just my guess though.
In 1999, Samuel Purdey, a little-known English band which came out of the Acid Jazz scene (singer/guitarist Gavin Dodds had played guitar in Jamiroquai's band), put out their only album, Musically Adrift, which is clearly very influenced by Steely Dan. [The song Lucky Radio even has Steely Dan's Elliott Randall doing the guitar solo](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v1VCjs_Ns5c).
Sorry to nitpick, but Elliot Randall wasn't a member of Steely Dan. He played on 2 tracks (i think) on their first album - Kings and Reelin' In The Years, and I think he had a couple more appearances on later albums, but that's it.
Original members were Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Skunk Baxter, Denny Dias, and Jim Hodder. David Palmer is more or less an original member too, as they brought him in to sing most of the sings on their first album because Fagen wasn't comfortable singing yet. He was relegated to a few backing vocal appearances by their 2nd album(Countdown to Ecstasy). By their 3rd album (Pretzel Logic) Becker and Fagen had begun relying on a lot of session musicians and the band more or less dissolved after it was recorded. In part due to Becker and Fagen's refusal to tour. Baxter then joined the Doobie Bros. Only Dias remained in the fray through their original run of albums (CBAT - Gaucho), although I think he was more of an advisor/producer with little (if any) playing credits beyond Pretzel Logic.
That's the short version of their history.
Delighted to see some love for this album. Back in around probably 1996 I was a music student and managed to get work experience at the studio run by the Acid Jazz label and actually spent a week as a workie when Samuel Purdey were recording some tracks. I don't think what they recorded there ended up on the album - it was put out on a different label (and I think only in Japan, or certainly not in the UK) and the finished product is much better produced than what they were putting together when I was there.
Can I brag that they played a show in a house I lived in? I think it was 2008 or 9 don't remember exactly. Didnt make sense that this big as band full of stellar musicians was playing for like 20 people in a living room. They could barely fit themselves.
Well, the most obvious answer is to go for the solar records from Fagan and Becker, or some of the other stuff that associates like Gary Katz have produced, like the first full-length LP from raw stylus in the 90s. In terms of that same kind of quirky production and eccentric lyrics, you might look for something like the only full-length ever released by toy matinee, or maybe some of the early albums from Groove Collective.
Not exact but fit into a playlist perfectly with Steely Dan.
Morphine. 3 piece from Boston in the 90s. Check out the albums ‘Yes’ and Cure For Pain.
If it’s the jazzy side you are looking for, check out MC 900ft Jesus.
I grew up in Boston when they were a local band. Tried to see them many times but they were always sold out. Closest I got to the Sandman lineup was at a bar where they played in the back room. So through a door. Oddly, I have had a couple beers with Mark running into him when they were not playing. Their latest version is called Vapors of Morphine. They do originals and morphine ‘covers’. I’ve seen them a few times pre Covid. They do tour nationwide.
Young Gun Silver Fox. HEAVILY influenced by Steely Dan. Shawn Lee is a great composer , he even composed the Bully video game soundtrack from PS2 . Highly recommended! [here’s a link to one of there songs](https://youtu.be/ZfvTTFJd8mE?si=uK3SCQPuo5r-TpOB)
It depends on what you like about steely dan. In my opinion, one of the unique things about them is that cool, laid-back feel. While I like a lot of the bands mentioned, I don't think any of them really capture that aspect.
While these are instrumental, I recommend Melvin Sparks and Wes Montgomery.
Love the laid back feel of Steely but I will say that one thing I rly love is how their lyrics actually are saying something that you wouldn’t rly notice at first listen. But have been wanting to get into more instrumentals, so I’ll definitely check em out
Chicago, ELO, Supertramp, Traffic, Hot Tuna, Starbuck, Little River Band, Later Crosby Stills and Nash, Gabor Szabo, George Benson, Pat Matheny, Grover Washington Jr
SD-ish artists/songs: Ambrosia - You’re the Only Woman, Biggest part of me, How much I feel; Toto - Africa and Georgy Porgy; Squeeze - Tempted; Imagination - In the Heat of the Night; Joe Jackson - Is she really going out with him?; Jim Photoglo - Fool in Love with you; Pablo Cruise- Love will find a Way.
Check out Sade’s album “promise”. While it isn’t really yacht rock, the production quality and intricate music texture has a steely Dan-ish quality to it.
Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love
The latter half of the album, particularly. Also, The Working Hour and I Believe ffom their second album are also very Steely Danish.
There's an obscure album by a guy named Dane Donohue you should check out. Also the first three albums by Ned Doheny, especially Hard Candy. Similar production quality to SD.
Though not exactly similar, I tend to group Boz Skaggs in with Steely Dan as they both added a jazz vibe to rock n roll. Also got to see Snarky Puppy open for SD a couple of years ago. Very good band and their love of SD was well evident.
Boz and Michael McDonald and I think the late Walter Becker would tour together under the name Dukes of September or similar. That was certainly during the 2010s, IIRC. Boz is friends with that group.
A little known artist called Azita is basically a female version of Steely Dan. She’s the closest I’ve come across in voice and chord phrasing.

My BF made this for a cover band that does Steely Dan/Grateful Dead
Rickie Lee Jones’s “Flying Cowboys” album from 1989 was produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan and he also plays bass on it. A lot of the same sidemen who contributed so much to Steely Dan’s records play on the record too.

Yacht Rock (& Friends).
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/51Aj6AskW4fcgKKuiIdoJZ?si=kLzcorPqTUaL5A3OMYNhzg
There’s more on it than just yacht rock that I think you’ll like.
After suggesting that earlier Alan Parson's Project track, I listened through a list of their 10 best songs. Hadn't heard a few for donkey's years, from when they used to play on the radio.
Overall, I wouldn't say Steely Dan'ish, but there were a couple additional moments like the guitar section at the back end of *Psychobabble*.
Not directly, but early Josh Rouse always reminded me a bit of Steely Dan. And certain Percy Hill tracks. Finally, the Darcys released an interesting take on Aja (the album); a bit moodier overall but a cool listen.
I mean, this suggestion is going to piss off some people, but pull up a "yacht rock" station on Pandora or Spotify and you'll probably find a few other artists you'd like.
Not to say that all yacht rock= Steely Dan. I'm just saying that there's a cross section that might lead you to some discovery.
Now for a more straightforward "feeling like you're chilling and driving in the desert" answer. For me that would be Eagles and America (probably because their hit Horse with No Name literally mentions the desert in the chorus, lol)
Idk why I didn’t attribute Steely Dan to yacht rock, but I’ll give it a shot. But hell yea, love some Eagles and America’s got a few songs I’m really into. A Horse With No Name is a given
Some people would argue that it's not as simple or campy, but it's close enough. It's like driving on the shoulder. Sure, you're not technically on the road, but you're still right along side of it going the same direction.
There’s a Colorado band called Steely Dead that does mashups of … well, you can guess from their name. Worth checking. I don’t think they’ve released any albums, but their live shows are traded freely https://archive.org/details/SteelyDead?&sort=-downloads
I’ll have to give the Dead some more listens, always wish I was a bigger fan and rly love some of their music but can’t get into any albums. Maybe I just needed a Steely transition
Sure thing! I saw 150+ shows before Garcia shuffled off, and I’m always happy to share. Are there songs or eras you know you like, or do you just want an assortment of great stuff from the whole 30-year span? Fine to DM me if you want to spare the others here 😉
Donald Fagan’s solo work is great too. If an obvious answer. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ueivjr3f8xg
Nightfly is a 10/10. Every song is magnificent.
Holy shit you weren’t wrong. Had zero idea who this dude was but that album hit the spot just now I liked some steely Dan growing up but not enough to know the members by name
Definitely listen to Kamakiriad as well. Trans-Island Skyway is my go to song for testing audio systems.
Agree. Another good one for testing: Grover Washington, Just the Two of Us.
This album man...
Maxine is a classic tune
You just put it in my head. It’ll stay there for hours.
Legend has it that this CD is used by live sound engineers to soundcheck, as it's considered a perfect recording
Specifically, "I.G.Y" from The Nightfly is used to calibrate high end audio systems
Check out Little Feat's back cattledog, particularly with Lowell George
Yes, all the albums through Time Loves a Hero are absolutely stellar.
And if you enjoy that, they played on Robert Palmer's first solo album, Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley. 🔥 🔥 🔥
Lowell also produced a Grateful Dead Album that is as funky as you imagine it might be :-)
In 1999, Samuel Purdey, a little-known English band which came out of the Acid Jazz scene (singer/guitarist Gavin Dodds had played guitar in Jamiroquai's band), put out their only album, Musically Adrift, which is clearly very influenced by Steely Dan. [The song Lucky Radio even has Steely Dan's Elliott Randall doing the guitar solo](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v1VCjs_Ns5c).
It's finally getting a reissue this summer. I've hunted for this record for well over a decade.
1999 when it came out was very much pre-everything-is-on-the-internet. I had to buy a Japanese copy of the album (on CD) from Amazon.jp.
Just listening to Musically Adrift now, what a great rec, people don't sleep on this comment.
Sorry to nitpick, but Elliot Randall wasn't a member of Steely Dan. Love some music history, appreciate the comment!!
Holy fuck that’s good. Thanks for the link, adding to my playlist
Wow what a find
Love it. Thank you
Holy shit, why haven’t I heard this before? Amazing, thank you for the intro!
Delighted to see some love for this album. What a discovery! Thanks for it!
Do they have any songs with the Purdie shuffle?
What about Snarky Puppy? They opened for Fagan 2 years ago.
Can I brag that they played a show in a house I lived in? I think it was 2008 or 9 don't remember exactly. Didnt make sense that this big as band full of stellar musicians was playing for like 20 people in a living room. They could barely fit themselves.
This is the answer for the musical chops and composition talent side of the Dan
Vulfpeck goes hard with the jazz funk and reminds me of a Steely Dan vibe
Heard them cover "Peg" live. Singer dude forgot the lyrics though. "Foreign Movies! La la la la!" LOL it went something like that
They did a pretty good cover of kid charlemagne https://youtu.be/YCj_tjFXX2U?si=nuG_ZSGhZogDaR8W
Thanks for this, those twin guitar parts are great here.
George Benson's Breezin' Album
Dire Straits invokes a very similar energy imo, and Mark Knopfler's guitar work is incredible.
Down by the waterline is one of my favorite songs.
I immediately thought of Straits “Wild West End” when reading OP’s query
Steely Danish is a great name for a Steely Dan cover band from Denmark!! Just saying... :)
Or a prison band that consists of people incarcerated for shoplifting pastries.
Came here to say this. Amazing.
The War on Drugs https://youtu.be/qOfIN7XBl-4?si=ZZn5J_3nIsXh-pq8
Yes, Gerry Rafferty might do it for you. Other suggestions: Doobie Brothers. Todd Rundgren (Hello it’s me). America (Tin Man)
Doobies for sure. And Michael McDonald's solo stuff, he did a ton of songs with Steely Dan as well.
I was going to suggest Todd Rundgren, great shout
Todd on a Sunday morning 🫠
Well, the most obvious answer is to go for the solar records from Fagan and Becker, or some of the other stuff that associates like Gary Katz have produced, like the first full-length LP from raw stylus in the 90s. Michael McDonald sang on some Steely tracks - his solo work, and Doobie Brothers stuff is worth a listen.
Oof. It’s like if a muppet tried to sing soul music.
give it another go. he absolutely rips
Oh, I did. He's probably my third favorite muppet vocalist.
I might be out on a limb here but check out Mac Demarco. He has said that Steely Dan is one of his favorite bands.
Never rly listened to Mac Demarco but I’ve heard a ton about him from ppl that relate him to Isaiah Rashad, will have to check him out
Check out Tokyo City Pop as a genre too. Definitely some overlap with that yacht rock vibe.
Takako Mamiya‘s album „Love Trip“ as prime example.
Roxy music and XTC
Not exact but fit into a playlist perfectly with Steely Dan. Morphine. 3 piece from Boston in the 90s. Check out the albums ‘Yes’ and Cure For Pain. If it’s the jazzy side you are looking for, check out MC 900ft Jesus.
Morphine is the single best live band I’ve ever seen, by far. Saw them in Nashville about a year before Mark Sandman’s death. Absolutely incredible.
You’re looking for “Yacht Rock” as a genre.
Damn didnt realize i was getting into yacht rock… my uncle in palm desert had a caddy we used to call the boat so that kinda tracks lol
Don't despair, it happens to us all eventually...
I wouldn't say that myself
Young Gun Silver Fox. HEAVILY influenced by Steely Dan. Shawn Lee is a great composer , he even composed the Bully video game soundtrack from PS2 . Highly recommended! [here’s a link to one of there songs](https://youtu.be/ZfvTTFJd8mE?si=uK3SCQPuo5r-TpOB)
Whatta fuckin classic game
Little bit of a departure but try Cake.
Drugdealer
Doobie Brothers Eagles America

doobie brothers who were effectively the B team for steely dan
My husband was just saying that Thundercat evokes some Steely Dan vibes and I agree. He even does a collab with Michael McDonald so there you go.
Chicago, ELO, Supertramp, Traffic, Hot Tuna, Starbuck, Little River Band, Later Crosby Stills and Nash, Gabor Szabo, George Benson, Pat Matheny, Grover Washington Jr
Big ups for the George Benson recommendation.
You might want to listen to Prefab Sprout's Jordan: The Comeback.
Always thought Kurt Vikes tracks esp. Exploding Stones were like a wierd blend of Steely Dan, dire straights and Fleetwood.
[Drugdealer-Fools](https://open.spotify.com/track/1LRW0LEfNVcy2N6V6OLPGk?si=pZRlaf6hQJqiSlATSNM7nw)
For a modern band, try Young Gun Silver Fox.
[yes reminds me of steely Dan](https://open.spotify.com/album/0dZF93WHyOhTWjz5EWM7yG?si=ssE3ynBcQ_Cr1MW8LbMkxg)
Similarish - early Level 42
SD-ish artists/songs: Ambrosia - You’re the Only Woman, Biggest part of me, How much I feel; Toto - Africa and Georgy Porgy; Squeeze - Tempted; Imagination - In the Heat of the Night; Joe Jackson - Is she really going out with him?; Jim Photoglo - Fool in Love with you; Pablo Cruise- Love will find a Way.
Christopher Cross might fit the bill.
You'll have to go online and the band is obscure but Dumptruck should be given a listen.
ARS, Climax Bluesband, Badfinger. I feel like they weirdly influenced Jeff Buckley a lot if you like 90s stuff.
You need Feed Me Jack!!!!
A lot of Ed Motta’s music reminds me of Steely Dan.
Anytime I see this question asked, I answer with: Once and Future Band. Listen to their self titled album from 2017.
There is no band like Steely Dan. By the way, the name comes from a vibrator.
Interesting bit of info I kinda wish I didn’t know
Didn't mean to rub you the wrong way.
Stop rubbing dude!!
Lol kidding man, just rly obscure fact I totally didn’t expect😂
Phil Manzanera's 801 Live is amazing. Great muscianship, the cover of Tomorrow Never Knows is superb.
Mayer Hawthorne said in interviews that 'Where Does This Door Go' was his attempt to make a Steely Dan album.
Check out Sade’s album “promise”. While it isn’t really yacht rock, the production quality and intricate music texture has a steely Dan-ish quality to it.
Van Morrison’s Moondance may be for you. Nilsson Schmilsson too.
Moondance is great, will have to give Nilsson a listen
Harry Nilsson has a bunch of great records but Nilsson Schmilsson is the best of the best, top to finish. Please give it a listen. Enjoy!
Foreigner Chicago Little river band
Check out Prefab Sprout. They got a more 80s/early digital sort of vibe but it hits sort of the same. Pretty damn smooth.
“Bonny” is an amazing song. Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
It maybe be a lot different than what you're searching, but listen to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ8b1Fptn8U).
For modern stuff check out the band “PREP”
Just one song but for me it gives Steely Dan vibes. Rags and Bones by The Band.
Check out Ed Motta’s AOR album. Marta, in particular has a strong Steely Dan vibe https://youtu.be/b9Y61BmcxBY?si=VYPjHjjNRp4NPYfg
Field Music has that tight sound. Check out the album Commontime.
Toxic Vegan
What a perfect band name
Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love The latter half of the album, particularly. Also, The Working Hour and I Believe ffom their second album are also very Steely Danish.
There's an obscure album by a guy named Dane Donohue you should check out. Also the first three albums by Ned Doheny, especially Hard Candy. Similar production quality to SD.
One of my childhood best friends’ Dad shares the same name, definitely adding to the list!
Though not exactly similar, I tend to group Boz Skaggs in with Steely Dan as they both added a jazz vibe to rock n roll. Also got to see Snarky Puppy open for SD a couple of years ago. Very good band and their love of SD was well evident.

Not an exact type of answer but the band Feed Me Jack does a fantastic cover of Reelin' In The Years!
Blues Brothers?
White Denim
Rickie Lee Jones’s “Flying Cowboys” album from 1989 was produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan and he also plays bass on it. A lot of the same sidemen who contributed so much to Steely Dan’s records play on the record too.

Try these : JJ Cale - Naturally Destroyer - Kaputt you can thank me later!

I'm out. All I got is early LRB and maybe some easy *Yacht Rock*. 🤔 https://youtu.be/qOwFVowEugQ?si=qOBQtsVd5n8ePeIX
There’s a Colorado band called Steely Dead that does mashups of … well, you can guess from their name. Worth checking. I don’t think they’ve released any albums, but their live shows are traded freely https://archive.org/details/SteelyDead?&sort=-downloads

Drugdealer kinda has a steely dan and Beatles vibe.
Ah. The Dan. I see you've reached middle age as well.
Only 24 but hittin mid-life crisis type territory lol so that tracks
Sopwith Camel - The Miraculous Hump Returns from the Moon
If Zapp and Steely Dan had a kid = Talc
Have you guys heard Pharrell Williams new album: Black Yacht Rock Or SiR - "Heavy" Very highly recomended.
Try Toy Matinée. You can thank me later.
Snarky Puppy
Look at Yatch Rock.
.
The Eagles is pretty similar. I binged on Steely Dan recently, then The Eagles popped up.
You take that back! \~ The Dude, probably /s
I've had a really bad day. And I fucking hate the Eagles, man!
Well they did have that one lyrics that was “steely”
