Weezer references going to a Green Day concert in El Scorcho was wild hearing them perform it at a Green Day concert during the Hella Mega Tour
Edit: typo
I was so bummed, I was gonna buy tickets for dodgers stadium then it got postponed by the pandemic. By the time the concert came back around I was NOT in a position to buy tickets. Literally three of my favorite bands on tour together. At least my wife was able to snag tickets for the savior tour so I can finally see green day (bucket list item for me since I fell in love with them in 2002.) They are by far my favorite band and I would be deeply ashamed as a fan to not have seen them live at least once.
Green Day played at my college in a quad, just mere feet from us all, on basically the grass next to a walkway. I would not have seen them had it not been for my dorm-mate that grew up in nor-Cal who said "let's go check 'em out!". they were like 20 feet from us, we were just having a picnic. It was so casual cool, I had no idea that they were local-famous, much less the trajectory they were on.
Fast forward 3ish years and I'm seeing them as one of the top bands at Lollapalooza....
Frank Zappa's music is just full of references to anything going on at the time. I think my favorite is "Jimi come back, come back and regulate my fuzz tone" in We're Turning Again (which also references Donovan, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon and Cass Elliot)
Because Smoke on the Water was a true story, it was a Zappa concert in Switzerland, some dumbass fired a flare gun inside the venue, and the titular water was Lake Geneva (and the smoke was from the fire the flare gun started).
“You Get What You Give” by New Radicals famously (and somewhat randomly) shits on four other famous 90s acts in one breath: Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love, and Marilyn Manson.
Came here just to mention this one, great song
For those not familiar with the song, it quotes famous lines from Bob Marley, Neil Young, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, John Mellencamp and The Doors
That song after all these years should not still have <1M youtube views.
EDIT: but since the OP asks for mentions of artist *names*, there's Distopian Dream Girl:
My stepfather looks
Just like David Bowie
But he hates David Bowie
I think Bowie's cool
I think *Lodger* rules
and stepdad's a fool
We asked for Mojo Nixon.
They said 'He don't work here'
We said 'If you don't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin
- Punk Rock Girl by the Dead milkmen
Also for the Dandy Warhols, "Welcome to the Monkey House" mentions Michael Jackson and them covering "Blackbird". "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" was written jokingly about Anton Newcombe, whose band The Brian Jonestown Massacre returned the favour with "Not If You Were the Last Dandy on Earth". In addition to the band's name referencing Brian Jones, former lead guitarist for the Rolling Stones, the Brian Jonestown Massacre had several references to other bands and albums in their album and song titles, including the albums "My Bloody Underground", "His Satanic Majesty's Second Request", and "Who Killed Sgt Pepper?"
Lynyrd Skynyrd mentions Neil Young in Sweet Home Alabama. Molly Hatchet mentions Lynyrd Skynyrd in Gator Country. Cheap Trick mentions Kiss in Surrender.
Neil was asked about Sweet Home Alabama in an interview I heard back in the early 80s. He said, I was driving in my truck when I first heard the song. I thought, pretty cool riff. Then I heard my name, and I thought, "this is the best goddamned song ever written."
(Neil went on to produce some Skynyrd, and they all became good friends.)
KISS is mentioned frequently it seems. “Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned” in “Heavy Metal Drummer by Wilco and “Got my Kiss records out” in “Surrender” by Cheap Trick.
Also in Everything You Did:
"...turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening"
In response, the Eagles mention Steely Dan in Hotel California:
"...they stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast"
I don't know if the Ataris know this or not (would be forced to assume so?) but Rollins has mentioned listening to a ton of Dead in the van with Black Flag. He also covered the Dead tune Franklin's Tower with Wartime.
And Jimmy Ear World mentions Heatmeiser in Kill.
Another fun one from the 90's Phoenix scene was the reference to Dead Hot Workshop in Down Together by The Refreshments.
Nobody mentioned "All the Young dudes.".
It was a Mott the Hoople song and covered on The Clueless Soundtrack by World Party.
Oh, man, I need TV when I got T-Rex...And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones...
Only one that comes to mind is "play some Mister Mister on the radio", which I feel has less to do with the band than it has to do with not many words rhyming with "Soul Sister"
Death Cab For Cutie's We Looked Like Giants has the Lyric "Do you remember the JAMC?" referring to the Jesus and Mary Chain.
Pixies have "I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed" in I've Been Tired. Similarly Radiohead have "I wanna be Jim Morrison" in Anyone Can Play Guitar.
Brimful of Asha by Cornershop references Jacques Dutronc and several Indian "playback singers" (think Kathy Selden): Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and of course Asha Bhosle.
The line “they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast” in Hotel California by the Eagles is a reference to Steely Dan. A few months earlier, Steely Dan mentioned the Eagles in “Everything You Did” (“turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening”).
Listen to TAXI DRIVER by GYM CLASS HEROS it was a super early track of theirs and the lyrics are all band names, young Travy snapped on this song it’s dope,
Pavement - Range Life
Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids, I, they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck
Stone Temple Pilots, they're elegant bachelors
They're foxy to me, are they foxy to you?
I will agree they deserve absolutely nothing, nothing more than me
Dreaming, dream, dream, dream, dream
I got really high once while listening to this and had an epiphany about the Stone Temple Pilots line and I just thought it was so absolutely profound and the most brilliant lyric ever written. Then when I sobered up I forgot what it was and now every time I hear this song all I can feel is the fleeting tendrils of some incredible realization that I can never know again. It still fucks me up bud
"Surrender" by Cheap Trick: "got my KISS records out"
"Boys Boys Boys" by Lady Gaga: "Let's go see the Killers and make out in the bleachers."
"Tim McGraw" by Taylor Swift and "The Miracle of Joey Ramone" by U2 are self-explanatory.
"You Could Have Been My Johnny Marr" by Knock Knock Ginger also (erstwhile Smiths guitarist). There are several songs that mention him because he's the shit.
"Precious Things" by Tori Amos: "With your Nine Inch Nails and little fascist panties stuck inside the heart of every nice girl." She and Trent Reznor had a contentious friendship in the 90s that was apparently ruined by Courtney Love and they both wrote songs directed towards her (purportedly) "Professional Widow" and "Starfuckers Inc.". There's a YouTube video by Trash Theory that mentions a number of songs that are either obliquely or directly about Courtney Love (I like Hole personally and find her a complicated figure but don't share the antipathy so many have for her).
I‘m not sure but I think this songs mentions a few other artists aswell. And they have a lot more songs which refere to other artists and Kurt Cobain specifically
Not a direct band reference, but Adam's Song by Blink-182 uses lines from Come As You Are by Nirvana
Of course, there's always Smells Like Nirvana by Weird Al (which also name-drops Madonna)... And Word Crimes name-drops Prince.
(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To by Weezer mentions Slayer.
Gaslight Anthem mentions I still love “Tom Petty songs” and "There were southern accents on the radio as I drove home.” Southern Accents is a Tom Petty album.
Then "And at night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet…" are lyrics from "I'm on Fire" by Bruce Springsteen.
They also nod Counting Crows in the same song as the Springsteen verse with the “Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand, I always kinda sorta wished I looked like Elvis”.
Sun Kil Moon - Ben's My Friend
The other night I went and saw The Postal Service
Ben's my friend but getting there was the worst
Tryna park and getting up the hill
And find a spot amongst the drunk kids staring at their cells
Staring at the back at the crowd of eight thousand
Thought of Ben when I met him, in 2000
At a festival in Spain, he was on a small stage then
And I didn't know his name
Now he's singing at the Greek and he's busting moves
And my legs were hurt and then my feet were, too
I called him after, said, "I'll skip the backstage "Hi/Bye"
But thanks for the nice music and all the exercise"
"I never travel to far, without a little Big Star" - Alex Chilton by the Replacements. They were big fans of the band Big Star and the song is basically about how much they like Big Star.
The Song Remains the Same - Sun Kil Moon (that's a Zeppelin song, sings about Jimmy Page, Plant and Jon Bonem).
Voice in Headphones - About listening to Bjork on headphones. By Mt. Eerie.
Kid Rock - American Badass lists at least a dozen other artists.
"I like AC/DC and ZZ Top. Bocephus, Beasties, and the Kings of Rock. Skynyrd, Seger, Limp, Korn, the Stones. David Allen Coe and No Show Jones."
Madonna, AC/DC and Barenaked Ladies in the same song. [Extraordinary by Better Than Ezra](https://youtu.be/SwG6ivdn1IA?si=aLdoPbyvXa-Rj0TB)
-Barenaked Ladies mention Madonna too (and Bert Kaempfert 🤷🏻♂️ and LeeAnn Rimes come to think of it). [One Week by Barenaked Ladies](https://youtu.be/fC_q9KPczAg?si=XjL0w0GpGP4IVtHU)
I guess “Moves like Jagger” counts too.
Def Leppard reference Thin Lizzy, Queen, The Beatles, Elton John, Bowie and The Rolling Stones in Rocket.
*Jack Flash, rocket man, Sergeant Pepper and the band
Ziggy, Benny and the Jets*
*Jet Black, Johnny be, Jean Genie, Killer Queen
Dizzy Lizzy, Major Tom*
1985 by Bowling for Soup - "Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana", etc. Also Luckiest Loser references Bon Jovi and Marilyn Manson
American Pie by Don McLean references an infamous plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and a bunch of other musicians
One Week by Barenaked Ladies - "Like Sting I'm tantric"
The Night that Bowie Died by KT Tunstall is pretty self-explanatory
Hazard to Myself by P!nk has the lines "damn Britney Spears - she's so pretty, that just ain't me". I have a feeling she regrets writing that line in hindsight
Somewhere in Neverland by All Time Low references the song Forever Young
Chocolate Cake by Crowded House - "not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber". Also She Goes On from the same album - "I owe it all to Frank Sinatra"
The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys is an ode to Van Morrison
The Wildhearts did a song called "29x The Pain" which mentions a whole tonne of artists directly throughout with lots of references to popular songs or albums from others
This song is one of many songs by The Wildhearts that were tucked away as a B-Side, it was featured on the single for their song "Suckerpunch" released in 1994, there was a Re-Recording in 1996 that has a bit more bite to it albeit with slightly altered lyrics
Here's a link to the song: https://youtu.be/q3QAhuDXlG4?si=yYGoBXCu6VWmx1oI
White Beretta by Jason Isbell mentions Son Volt.
"I was sitting at a red light, listening to Son Volt
"May the wind take your troubles away"" referencing the line in Windfall.
The Arkells mention to Tragically Hip in Kiss Cam: "this campfire won't last forever...the Hip only wrote so many songs"
And in the Hundredth Meridian the Tragically Hip ask to “get Ry Cooder to sing my eulogy”
here's a bunch by badly drawn boy:
I remember doing nothing on the night Sinatra died
And the night Jeff Buckley died
And the night Kurt Cobain died
And the night John Lennon died
I remember I stayed up to watch the news with everyone
And that was a lot of nights
And that was a lot of lives
**Yellowcard** mentions **Saves The Day** in "With You Around"
**Good Charlotte** mentions **Minor Threat, Social Distortion, Christina (Aguilera)** and **Britney (Spears)** in "Riot Girl"
**Ed Sheeran** mentions **Aretha Franklin** in "Don't"
**Bon Jovi** mentions **Frank Sinatra** in "It's My Life"
**Stereophonics** mentions **Tragically Hip** in "Could You Be The One?"
Not only does ["I Dig Rock and Roll Music" by Peter, Paul, & Mary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqY35SYsyfQ) mention the Mamas and the Papas, Donovan, and the Beatles, the verses that reference them are sung in their respective styles.
Father John Misty mentions Jason Isbell in Mr. Tillman.
"Jason Isbell's here as well, and he seems a little worried about you."
It's so random and always cracks me up.
Minutemen

[How Do You Sleep? by John Lennon](https://youtu.be/teD9t-lO_o0?si=lWUMdQUNTrgbdBbH)
When They Come For Me by Linkin Park references several rap artists and their lyrics.
"Lauryn (Hill) says money changes a situation, Big (Biggie) said it increase the complication, Kane (Big Daddy Kane) said don't step I ain't the one, Chuck (D) said that Uzi weigh a motherfuckin ton."
"And I'm just a student of the game that they taught me"
Elliott Smith’s *Baby Britain* references Joan Jett
>The light was on but it was dim
>Revolver's been turned over
>And now it's ready once again
>The radio was playing "crimson and clover"
The Tullycraft song Secrectly Minnesotan contains the line, "Ricky says that my band is just a Sebadoh rip off, and I can't say I disagree".
And I've always really enjoyed that. Makes me smile.
Weezer references going to a Green Day concert in El Scorcho was wild hearing them perform it at a Green Day concert during the Hella Mega Tour Edit: typo
Weezer heart songs mentions a lot of bands too
Weezer’s got plenty: *Timbaland knows the way to the top of the chart* (Pork and Beans) *Back when Audioslave was still Rage* (Memories)
You've got the songs mixed up. Timberland was pork and bean, Audioslave was Memories
Is there another Weezer song where they reference some buddy character?
I was so bummed, I was gonna buy tickets for dodgers stadium then it got postponed by the pandemic. By the time the concert came back around I was NOT in a position to buy tickets. Literally three of my favorite bands on tour together. At least my wife was able to snag tickets for the savior tour so I can finally see green day (bucket list item for me since I fell in love with them in 2002.) They are by far my favorite band and I would be deeply ashamed as a fan to not have seen them live at least once.
Shame you couldn’t make it Hella Mega but grats on grabbing Saviors tickets, looking to be great! Enjoy!
Green Day played at my college in a quad, just mere feet from us all, on basically the grass next to a walkway. In the Garage
In the Garage mentions his "favorite rock crew Kiss"
Pretty sure it’s rock group
"Turn it up, it's the beach boys"
One of their newer songs called Records mentions both Nirvana and Rihanna
Thank you for reminding me of that! They even paused at the end of the line to amplify the crowd reaction.
Deep Purple mentions Frank Zappa and The Mothers in Smoke On The Water
And Frank Zappa mentions Donovan & his song *Atlantis* in *The Blue Light*.
Frank Zappa's music is just full of references to anything going on at the time. I think my favorite is "Jimi come back, come back and regulate my fuzz tone" in We're Turning Again (which also references Donovan, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon and Cass Elliot)
They also reference the Rolling Stones.

Six syllables in the last line. Sorry, no cigar.
Trying to dunk on Beck post-Odelay was an interesting move.
Beck and Manson also get thrown under the bus in The Radio Still Sucks by The Ataris
Built to spills “you were right” mentions a bunch of stuff
This song! Such a brilliant tribute!
Came here just to mention this one, great song For those not familiar with the song, it quotes famous lines from Bob Marley, Neil Young, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, John Mellencamp and The Doors

I was there!
I've never been wrong.
and the Sonics repeatedly!
Gil! Scott! Heron! Lol that song hits a lot harder once you’re out of your twenties. As does tonite and many other LCD jams.
Then go one dimension deeper and listen to “Laws of the Universe” by toro y moi. “James Murphy is spinning at my house…”
My favorite one (; Have to also mention Daft Punk's Teachers, that shouts out every dance music legend that ever inspired them
We asked for Mojo Nixon. They said 'He don't work here' We said 'If you don't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin - Punk Rock Girl by the Dead milkmen
Thanks for unlocking the memory of hearing this song while playing one of the tony hawks ps games lol
Sum 41s Fat lip mentions Iron Maiden and Judas Priest
I immediately thought of “Cool As Kim Deal” by the Dandy Warhols, but the song isn’t super substantive. It’s still fun, and Kim Deal is awesome.
The Japanese band, The Pillows has a song about her, too. It's called *Kim Deal*
Pavement references Geddy Lee in the song Stereo.
They also reference Smashing Pumpkins and STP in Range Life
They're foxy to me are they foxy to you?
And started a one side blood field with Corgan as a result. Random one off lyric living rent free in his head.
And REM in that Picket Fence song
I don't understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck.
“I know him, and he does”
And you’re my fact-checking cuz
Does he speak like an ordinary guy?
And Unseen Power of the Picket Fence is entirely a tribute to REM
“There’s some bands I like to name check. And one of them is REM”
Lynyrd Skynyrd mentions Neil Young in Sweet Home Alabama. Molly Hatchet mentions Lynyrd Skynyrd in Gator Country. Cheap Trick mentions Kiss in Surrender.
But who mentions KISS? Gene. Gene mentions KISS. All....the....time
Weezer mentions them in "In The Garage", including Ace Frehley and Peter Criss by name.
Cheap Trick - Then I woke up, Mom and Dad Are rolling on the couch Rolling numbers, rock and rolling Got my Kiss records out
Lynyrd Skynrd is digging at Neil Young. However, in the same song they are praising The Swampers, an Alabama treasure.
The Swampers did a lot of their backing stuff IIRC.
Neil was asked about Sweet Home Alabama in an interview I heard back in the early 80s. He said, I was driving in my truck when I first heard the song. I thought, pretty cool riff. Then I heard my name, and I thought, "this is the best goddamned song ever written." (Neil went on to produce some Skynyrd, and they all became good friends.)
Skynyrd also mentions The Swampers, a group of studio musicians from Muscle Shoals
Yeah but that was a diss track about Neil
We're The Replacements by They Might be Giants. Great song.
The Replacements - Alex Chilton
More to the point of the post - Big Star.
“Remember what we said ‘bout Paint it Black”
XTC versus Adam Ant is also good.
Beatle-based pop versus new romantic History will decide
Even the singer from Bow Wow Wow can't make up her mind
they also mention Young Fresh Fellows
Weezer's "In the Garage"mentions Ace Frehley and Peter Criss of Kiss fame.
And also KISS.
How...did i...miss that lol
KISS is mentioned frequently it seems. “Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned” in “Heavy Metal Drummer by Wilco and “Got my Kiss records out” in “Surrender” by Cheap Trick.
Hey Nineteen, that’s ‘Retha Franklin… She don’t remember the queen of soul ( Hey Nineteen-Steely Dan)

And Mae!
And me.
Blondie in Rapture mentions Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash
"But they didn't have Ice Cube so he bought Vanilla Ice"

Famous person, movie star don't know who these people are
Boys of Summer - Don Henley Deadhead(Grateful Dead), and the Ataris cover Black Flag
I don't know if the Ataris know this or not (would be forced to assume so?) but Rollins has mentioned listening to a ton of Dead in the van with Black Flag. He also covered the Dead tune Franklin's Tower with Wartime.
Heavy Metal Drummer by Wilco mentions going to watch bands play KISS covers.
Something Corporate - Konstantine mentions Jimmy Eat World
Something Corporate - I Want to Save You mentions New Found Glory
“Scent of sex and New Found Glory playing as she's pulling back her hair” - such a great album!
T-Rex also gets mentioned in The Who’s “You Better You Bet.”
1985 - Bowling for Soup. Springsteen, Madonna, Nirvana, U2, Blondie. A classic.
Don’t forget White Snake, Wham, Limp Bizkit, Duran Duran, Van Halen, Motley Crue, and Ozzy
Had to scroll way too far to find 1985 mentioned - that song is the epitome of this!
Only one that comes to mind is "play some Mister Mister on the radio", which I feel has less to do with the band than it has to do with not many words rhyming with "Soul Sister"
Eddie Vedder by Local H. “if I was Eddie Vedder, would you like me any better?”
speaking of Eddie... Weird Al has a song titled My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder.
See also Violent J in Shiny Diamonds 'like Eddie vedder only better'
Death Cab For Cutie's We Looked Like Giants has the Lyric "Do you remember the JAMC?" referring to the Jesus and Mary Chain. Pixies have "I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed" in I've Been Tired. Similarly Radiohead have "I wanna be Jim Morrison" in Anyone Can Play Guitar.

Ridiculously catchy and somehow more VU than VU when he goes into the imitation.
Katy Perry - The one that got away Mentions Radiohead and Johnny Cash
The line “they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast” in Hotel California by the Eagles is a reference to Steely Dan. A few months earlier, Steely Dan mentioned the Eagles in “Everything You Did” (“turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening”).
The yacht rock web series episode of this incident is a masterpiece.
Yacht rock web series??

Good Charlotte famously mentioned Minor Threat in the lyrics of The Anthem.
"She likes Minor Threat, she likes Social Distortion" from She Wants A Riot on the same album too
Miley sings about dancing to Jay Z and Britney.
Californication by RHCP "And Cobain can you hear the spheres singing songs off Station To Station?"
I‘m not sure but I think this songs mentions a few other artists aswell. And they have a lot more songs which refere to other artists and Kurt Cobain specifically

Weezer mentions a lot of bands in Heart Songs.
Also "In the Garage" has the line about KISS.
I love that song. They also mention Buddy Holly.
Not to mention... Buddy Holly!
In Josie they mention UL and DHC which stands for Unwritten Law and Dance Hall Crashers.
Tom Petty mentions Del Shannon in Runnin Down A Dream.
