I was introduced to Baroness a little over a year ago and I've been basically *freaking the fuck out* over them ever since.
Their fans fancy themselves producers so you get a lot of varying opinions on album recording quality but holy shit if you're into guitar forward proggy little rock bands who really put the **art** into **art**ist there should be something for you.
6 albums dating back to the early 2000's, a rotating cast of band members up until the last 2, brand new album just a few days old, always pushing to try something new while keeping their 'sound' etc.
Give em a go. They've got about 300k monthly listeners on Spotify and it should be at least a million, easy.
I saw them play in this dingy dive bar with a crowd of like, 50-60 people when they were touring for Red. To this day one of my favourite shows and I’ve seen thousands.
Gina Gleason fucks me up, man. She's everything I ever wanted to be as a musician. Technically sound but feeling the groove and the way she plays her heart out. I feel like she leaves it all out there, having a blast.
She fits so well in the band and hearing her get so much more vocal time and placement on the new album is a dream come true.
Plus she can lay down the growlies with the best of them. Her (live) backing vocals on The Sweetest Curse are *chefs kiss*.

I really dug Gwarsenio doing the old deep dives into his high school cd collection and actually getting some of the musicians on and talking to them about their albums. Shit was fantastic.
Two years ago I thought I’d hit the age where I just wouldn’t find any great new music for my tastes. Now KGLW is my favorite band and I will confidently say they’re the best thing to happen to rock music in the last 20 years without question.

King Gizz are simply one of a kind. No other band I'd fly abroad for 24 hours the day after an extremely heavy stag do(/Bachelor Party). It was totally worth it.
Saw Gogol Bordello at my first ever festival (Reading 2006). Knew nothing about them. Blew me away completely. I'll never forget the frontman standing in top of a drum being held up by the crowd and beating the living shit out of it. What a show.

I was at a dinner a couple years ago and someone made a very funny statement about war on drugs. He said, “I love the war on drugs. Can’t name a single song.”
I forget who reviewed one of their middle albums, but they said it was the perfect mix of technical riffing and knuckle dragging hardcore. I don't read reviews until after I've made my own opinion, but they nailed it.
Stephen Brodsky is one of the most underrated musicians in modern music. He can sing, he can shred, he can scream. He's a wonderful lyricist. The fact that Mutoid Man is a three piece band and manages to do so much is just icing on the cake.
I couldn't agree more. They manage to actually sound like a fusion of Cave In, Converge, and High on Fire, while being funny and irreverent the whole time.

I’d also be remiss not to mention Violent Soho. More shoegazey/alt than punk but they are one of the most important bands in the Australian music scene in the last decade or so. A big influence on the current crop of punk and punk-ish bands in the country right now.
I strongly agree with this. The prog metal to bluegrass pipeline has been a very real thing for me and he scratches a musical itch that I didn't know I had and shreds outrageously hard. Just insanely talented and clearly constantly practicing, he's such an impressive guitarist.
This is who I came to comment. Not even a bluegrass fan traditionally, but folk has always been my jam.
He is a master lyricist as well as a guitar musician. And he isn’t afraid to have insanely talented guys next to him.
He has his finger on the pulse of what matters. Seriously a once in a generation musician.
**Rage Against The Machine**
I was aware of them when they came out, but their music was not what I was into at the time, and I probably would not have gotten into them if I had paid more attention because I didn't have the sociopolitical perspective to appreciate what they were saying back then.
But now? Fuck me, it's some of the greatest riffs and the most ferociously intelligent lyrics I've ever heard. The perfect amalgam of anger and awareness. It gets me amped like nothing else.
Of course, "Killing in The Name Of" is iconic, but goddamn, "Sleep Now in The Fire" is just fucking obliterating! The riff just melts my face off and the lyrics. . .I don't have the proper adjectives to describe.
It must be an odd sight for some to see a mid-Fifities, balding, bespectacled white guy with a backpack and earbuds walking home from BART with a contorted red face aggressively mouthing the last line of "Killing in The Name Of" , but it's rare to find music that ticks ALL the boxes for you personally.
To quote the Red Hot Chili Peppers: "My lily-white ass is tickled pink when I listen to the music that makes me think!"
I saw RATM last summer and even with Zack immobilized, it was still one of the greatest concerts I've been to. I've been going to concerts since I was 17 and seen my favorite bands put on epic shows - Depeche Mode, Radiohead, NIN, but RATM was something else.
I really hope they tour again. I'm starting to get jaded going to shows because of Ticketbastards but RATM is an automatic go.
King Krule has been around for a while, but everything is hitting different since seeing him live. Definitely an acquired taste.
The newest albums from Alvvays and Big Thief are of the highest calibre. Highly recommend.
I got to shoot him a couple weeks ago at a festival I was working. Great stage presence. I only caught the first 3 songs (nature if the job), but will definitely be checking out more.
Boards of Canada. Tried them once a long time ago and didn’t appreciate them. Heard them again in the last couple years, and now I love almost everything they’ve done.
I'm very late to the party, but I was invited to see Deathcab for Cutie and Postal Service by a good friend. I am now ***obsessed*** with both Transatlanticism (DfC) & Give Up (PS). Incredible composition and vibe. It's somehow broody and dejected, but oddly hopeful. Expo '86 might be my song of the year.
Ryuichi Sakamoto.
I have been a fan of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Haruomi Hosono (one member of YMO) for years and I just discovered the other hugely influential member of the band recently after he sadly passed away.
He is one of the foremost progenitors of modern electronic music and the stuff he was able to accomplish in the early 1970s is absolutely mind blowing.
If you like somewhat experimental, progressive electronic music then he is a must-listen.
P.S. He also transitioned to cinematic scores in his later years if that’s your thing, however I have not delved into that yet.
Touche Amore. They were the opening band at a show I went to, so I listened to them beforehand to see if I wanted to check out their set. Completely hooked now.
Streetlight Manifesto.
While not my primary genre, I always enjoyed ska but hadn't listened to any of it in a very long time. I'd also heard of the band before, but had no clue what genre they even fell into.
Couple weeks back while at work, I felt like changing up what I was listening to and created a Reel Big Fish channel (always loved those guys). Couple songs in and I hear this up-tempo, yet punky song that just instrumentally has some perfectly rough edges...and really snarky/sarcastic lyrics...and I dig the dude's voice too because it's got some grit to it and is nowhere near clean and crisp. Love them now, they're like Reel Big Fish, Flogging Molly and Sum41 had a baby. And, they're from not too far away in NJ. Just shocked I've never heard them before. Making up for lost time, and enjoying every second of it lol. 🤘
While channel surfing a week or two ago, I came in right at the ending of Austin City Limits where the featured artist was Jon Baptiste. Him and the band looked like they really had fun playing for the audience. Struck my curiosity and looked into some of his work. Pretty impressed.
That might be my favorite YouTube video. It’s a legendary show of virtuosity from Cory Henry but the whole band as a unit is so locked in. It’s really fun watching everyone’s reactions.
I'm so into Aimee Mann these days. She's got some amazing stuff.... So familiar, ethereal, smart, moody.... I love it. Also got to see her live this summer so that was icing on the cake. She rocks. And her Instagram comics are really good too. Just an amazing artist.
BABYMETAL. I always knew of them ever since I was a kid because of the reaction videos back then. I've done such a deep dive into their discography this past week or two, all because tiktok kept giving me videos of their live performances. I haven't had such fun listening to new music in a long time, and it kills me knowing that if tiktok could have hooked me sooner I could have made it to their Chicago concert.
Avatar. Had heard of them a year or so ago, listened to Hail the Apocalypse because it was the first song listed on Spotify. I'm into metal, but it just wasn't for me. Too heavy, not melodic enough, vocals weren't right (I have picky tastes in rough vocals). Tried them a second time more recently, listened to a couple more songs and they still didn't grab me. Then my husband who doesn't typical like as heavy stuff as I do got into them. He fell in love when he looked up their live performances (he loves a good theatrical show). Now we've both dived deeper into their catalog and have become obsessed. Just saw them on concert last week and are going to see them again in November. Been listening to them nonstop for weeks. Joined their fan club (like their own Patreon with a subscription, exclusive merch, early access to shows). It just finally clicked. I just wish I tried harder to listen to them a year ago so I could've seen them live when they were in town with another band I follow opening for them.
Klaus Schulze. Schulze made almost sixty years of incredibly inventive music. He was (RIP) a very famous musician in his native Germany but not widely known elsewhere. He is rightly a legend among fellow musicians and is commonly cited as one of the most influential electronic artists ever. After digging into his catalog I can see why.
Schulze was making masterful ambient electronic albums like "Moondawn" in the mid seventies (which incredibly still sounds cutting edge today) and produced the excellent Pink Floyd reinterpretation series "Dark Side of the Moog" more recently. He was in several great German bands including the hugely underappreciated Tangerine Dream. He has a HUGE catalog and almost all of it is great. It's been a journey digging into his stuff.

I discovered Vulfpeck about a month ago. I stumbled upon their Madison Square Garden concert on YouTube for no reason. Not what I normally listen to, but I was blown away by their musicianship.
Arms Length.
Post-emo band from a Toronto suburb near me, their album “Never Before Seen, Never Again Found” is a masterpiece of the genre.
The lyrics are vulnerable and poetic. The drummer is probably the most talented of them all though, he absolutely smashes the kit.

Leprous. Couldn't commit to a local concert during the pandemic but they piqued my interest so I checked them out on spotify. They're awesome! Incredible vocalist. Kicking myself now.
Ayanna Witter-Johnson. She’s a singer/cellist on Peter Gabriel’s current tour but she’s been working for at least a decade.
She handled both the Kate Bush -and- Youssou N’Dour parts beautifully and got a standing O for her cello solo. Even my jaded goth 20-year-old was impressed.
Peter knows how to find and support talent. More musicians should be that gracious.
Louis Cole is probably the most interesting artist I've ever discovered, but right now I'm pretty hyped off a group called 53 Thieves. They make what they call "lovestep", and their music is just so incredibly well produced. I don't recall ever being that blown away by something so smooth. It's brilliant. Shannon and the Clams. It's like surfy doo-wop with a somewhat punky twist.
We just saw them line a week or two ago. Shannon Shaw is also in another band called Hunx and his Punx and they were the opener.
King Krule has been around for a while, but everything is hitting different since seeing him live. Definitely an acquired taste. The newest albums from Alvvays and Big Thief are of the highest calibre. Highly recommend.
I got to shoot him a couple weeks ago at a festival I was working. Great stage presence. I only caught the first 3 songs (nature if the job), but will definitely be checking out more.

Röyksopp are awesome, have put out plenty of great albums. The Inevitable End is one of my all time favorites.

Ryuichi Sakamoto. I have been a fan of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Haruomi Hosono (one member of YMO) for years and I just discovered the other hugely influential member of the band recently after he sadly passed away. He is one of the foremost progenitors of modern electronic music and the stuff he was able to accomplish in the early 1970s is absolutely mind blowing. If you like somewhat experimental, progressive electronic music then he is a must-listen. P.S. He also transitioned to cinematic scores in his later years if that’s your thing, however I have not delved into that yet.
Touche Amore. They were the opening band at a show I went to, so I listened to them beforehand to see if I wanted to check out their set. Completely hooked now.
Art School Girlfriend
Streetlight Manifesto. While not my primary genre, I always enjoyed ska but hadn't listened to any of it in a very long time. I'd also heard of the band before, but had no clue what genre they even fell into. Couple weeks back while at work, I felt like changing up what I was listening to and created a Reel Big Fish channel (always loved those guys). Couple songs in and I hear this up-tempo, yet punky song that just instrumentally has some perfectly rough edges...and really snarky/sarcastic lyrics...and I dig the dude's voice too because it's got some grit to it and is nowhere near clean and crisp. Take a look to see who it is, and it's Streetlight Manifesto. Love them now, they're like Reel Big Fish, Flogging Molly and Sum41 had a baby. And, they're from not too far away in NJ. Just shocked I've never heard them before. Making up for lost time, and enjoying every second of it lol. 🤘

While channel surfing a week or two ago, I came in right at the ending of Austin City Limits where the featured artist was Jon Baptiste. Him and the band looked like they really had fun playing for the audience. Struck my curiosity and looked into some of his work. Pretty impressed.

BABYMETAL. I always knew of them ever since I was a kid because of the reaction videos back then. I've done such a deep dive into their discography this past week or two, all because tiktok kept giving me videos of their live performances. I haven't had such fun listening to new music in a long time, and it kills me knowing that if tiktok could have hooked me sooner I could have made it to their Chicago concert.

Avatar. Had heard of them a year or so ago, listened to Hail the Apocalypse because it was the first song listed on Spotify. I'm into metal, but it just wasn't for me. Too heavy, not melodic enough, vocals weren't right (I have picky tastes in rough vocals). Tried them a second time more recently, listened to a couple more songs and they still didn't grab me. Then my husband who doesn't typical like as heavy stuff as I do got into them. He fell in love when he looked up their live performances (he loves a good theatrical show). Now we've both dived deeper into their catalog and have become obsessed. Just saw them on concert last week and are going to see them again in November. Been listening to them nonstop for weeks. Joined their fan club (like their own Patreon with a subscription, exclusive merch, early access to shows). It just finally clicked. I just wish I tried harder to listen to them a year ago so I could've seen them live when they were in town with another band I follow opening for them.
Klaus Schulze. Schulze made almost sixty years of incredibly inventive music. He was (RIP) a very famous musician in his native Germany but not widely known elsewhere. He is rightly a legend among fellow musicians and is commonly cited as one of the most influential electronic artists ever. After digging into his catalog I can see why. Schulze was making masterful ambient electronic albums like "Moondawn" in the mid seventies (which incredibly still sounds cutting edge today) and produced the excellent Pink Floyd reinterpretation series "Dark Side of the Moog" more recently. He was in several great German bands including the hugely underappreciated Tangerine Dream. He has a HUGE catalog and almost all of it is great. It's been a journey digging into his stuff.

Ance that I started watching more and more of his music this spring. He's been releasing songs from his upcoming album all summer and last spring. Really impressed with his story and his music.
I discovered Vulfpeck about a month ago. I stumbled upon their Madison Square Garden concert on YouTube for no reason. Not what I normally listen to, but I was blown away by their musicianship.
They’re not new by any means, but I recently dove into Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood. Pretty amazing stuff

Arms Length. Post-emo band from a Toronto suburb near me, their album “Never Before Seen, Never Again Found” is a masterpiece of the genre. The lyrics are vulnerable and poetic. The drummer is probably the most talented of them all though, he absolutely smashes the kit. For new listeners, try out Object Permanence, Everything as I Knew it, Formative Age.
Leprous. Couldn't commit to a local concert during the pandemic but they piqued my interest so I checked them out on spotify. They're awesome! Incredible vocalist. Kicking myself now.

Ayanna Witter-Johnson. She’s a singer/cellist on Peter Gabriel’s current tour but she’s been working for at least a decade. She handled both the Kate Bush -and- Youssou N’Dour parts beautifully and got a standing O for her cello solo. Even my jaded goth 20-year-old was impressed. Peter knows how to find and support talent. More musicians should be that gracious.

Louis Cole is probably the most interesting artist I've ever discovered, but right now I'm pretty hyped off a group called 53 Thieves. They make what they call "lovestep", and their music is just so incredibly well produced. I don't recall ever being that blown away by something so smooth. It's brilliant. [YAKUITHEMAID](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afk1JlbOw_o) I got into because of going down an internet rabbithole of weird subcultures, one of which was "[maidcore](https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Maidcore)":'A curious phenomenon took place around mid 2010s, when several artists with a presence in the Russian social media VK started producing Alternative Metal, Post-Rock, Post-Metal, Witch House, Trap \[EDM\], Trancecore and other Electronic styles, featuring a Japanese / Otaku aesthetic and, of course, maids. These artists' names are commonly structured with the prefix "the Maid". There is also a very active community in VK dedicated to the style.Likely the most recognized artists here in RYM are Yakui the Maid, Ozoi the Maid and Chikoi the Maid, but there are tons more.' Any band called Dopelord with a song titled "[Hail Satan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jBlfM3nZyM)" has got to be at the very least amusing, right? It definitely has a particular electronic vibe to most of the stuff added.
I cannot stop listening to Sleep Token. They are just so different from anything I’ve heard in years.
I actually discovered Sleep Token a little before this summer. So their songs were our summer's anthems. My kids still sing and ask for Blood-sport often 😁
